Macintosh designer is selling $1,900 replicas of Apple's legendary pirate flag
Gift-giving season is right around the corner, and we know just the perfect gift for the Apple nut in your life. No, it's not an iPhone case or a new iPad Air. It's a $1,900 hand-painted pirate flag.
The Jolly Roger — sporting a classic, multi-colored Apple eyepatch — is central to Apple lore. The skunkworks team behind the original Macintosh hoisted the flag above their office on the Apple Campus as an embodiment of one of Steve Jobs' most famous slogans: "It’s better to be a pirate than join the navy."
Back in 1983, when the Macintosh team moved into a new office building, programmer Steve Capps sewed together the black flag and asked graphic designer Susan Kare to paint the skull and crossbones on it. It's said that the flag flew over the office building for over a year before disappearing forever into the annals of computer history.
Now Kare is selling bespoke replicas of the flag in two sizes: 3 feet by 5 feet and 4 feet by 6 feet for $1,900 and $2,500, respectively. That's a pretty penny, but each is hand painted and signed by Kare, who is a legend in her own right: she's designer behind the original Macintosh icons and fonts you all know and love.
17-Year-Old Builds Algae Biofuel Lab in Her Bedroom to Win Intel Science Talent Search Prize
Congratulations to 17 year old Sara Volz, this year’s winner of the Intel Science Talent Search. Sara won the grand prize with her project, which enables maximum biofuel production using a method she invented in her bedroom underneath a lofted bed! From Inhabitat:
As dedicated a scientist as her adult colleagues, Sara Volz took to sleeping with the same light cycles that her algae required to grow. In a homemade lab under her loft bed, Volz grew algae in a medium containing the pesticide sethoxydim to kill the algae that produced low levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), an enzyme that is important in lipid synthesis. The remaining algae could produce substantial amounts of oil that could make the biofuel commercially viable in the future. Since algae requires little land mass and comparatively few inputs to sustain, the biofuel stands as a great renewable alternative to petroleum.
The Intel Science Talent Search included seven other finalists, among them young researchers who received a combined $1.25 million by the Intel Foundation for their efforts. Society for Science & the Public has held the competition since 1942. “Society for Science & the Public is proud to join Intel in congratulating Sara Volz for her scientific accomplishments,” said Elizabeth Marincola, president of the organization. “Sara’s work demonstrates how a young person who is fascinated by science, which she has been since a kindergarten science fair, can work with few sophisticated resources and have real impact on society.”

The Vols scored on a sweet fake field goal. This was too much for the fans to handle.
This fan decided to give tight end Alex Ellis a big ol' helmet hug, but it brought him out of the crowd and onto the field. From Rocky Top, to Rocky Bottom.
Remember that Tennessee and Lil Jon are best friends, so TURN DOWN FOR WHAT applies here.

Cops: Naked suspect assaults man, 84, at airport - USA TODAY
firehoseThree things at Logan today:
- 'At around noon, a woman using the ladies’ restroom in Terminal C reported that a naked man had fallen through the ceiling into the stall area before running out of the bathroom, State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said.
The man, later identified as a 26-year-old Cameron Shenk of Boston, then assaulted an elderly man he encountered upon fleeing from the restroom, according to Procopio.
“He assaulted the elderly man, bit the man on the ear causing laceration to ear, and then began choking the man with [the elderly man’s] own cane,” Procopio said.'
- 'Just a few minutes before, motorists outside Terminal A saw a young woman passenger screaming from inside a vehicle that had just pulled up at the Delta Air Lines entrance, Procopio said. The woman had kicked out one of the car’s windows in distress, Procopio said.
Troopers followed the car into Terminal B at the United Airlines entrance, where a cruiser pulled in front of the car, allowing the woman to leave the vehicle, according to Procopio. The victim, later identified as a 21-year-old Woburn resident, said the driver of the vehicle had punched her in the face after she refused to give him money and would not let her out of the car.
The driver, 52-year-old Anton Hilton of Roxbury, was arrested and charged with assault and battery and kidnapping.'
- 'The incident with Curt Schilling was made public in a series of tweets that began at 7:26 a.m.: “Start your day with this. Going through airport security. Son says “DAD! I think I [left a] fake grenade in my bag.”
Schilling, who did not say which of his sons was involved, later tweeted: “15 TSA agents are on their walkie talkies. Police show up and everyone in line is shooed 50 yards away. Police, TSA could not...have been cooler once they realized what was happening.”'

GAMEDAY SINE. GAMEDAY SINE. MOST HARVARD THING EVER
How To Get Away With Uber
firehose'Amazon — more than any other company, more than Google, more than Facebook, more than Apple — taps into what people desire in a terrifyingly primal way: We want a thing, fast and preferably cheap. Not much else matters. We know Amazon’s not a nice company, and that the people who work there are treated poorly. We don’t always like it, but there is absolutely, definitively, nothing we will do to stop it. We are happily addicted.
That same feeling is there with Uber, except one thing: We know where Amazon has ended up, more or less, but we don’t know where Uber’s going to stop. Maybe, for Uber, it doesn’t stop at all. For Kalanick and his team, the means are the end. There is no greater mission. There is only hunger.
Raw, pure, unbridled ambition is an uncomfortable thing to look at. It’s not that it’s ugly, necessarily. It’s just brutally, shockingly honest. Uber does not pretend to have a glorious philosophy—it wants to make transport easy, but there is no aspiration as lofty as “organize the world’s information” or “make the world more open and connected.” And perhaps that’s the way it should be. After all, would it be more offensive if Uber had a mission beyond itself? It certainly feels like less of a betrayal to know that it just wants to be as big, as powerful, as necessary, as it can be.
...
The dick-swinging, the gluttony, the not-quite-lies and the full-on bullshit… All of these things, and in particular the spectacular combination of all of these things, are enough to dislike a company, and even to hate it. But it’s incredibly popular, too, because, man, if people vote with their feet — or in this case their fingers — then they keep voting, again and again, for Uber.
And that, in the end, is the real reason so many people hate Uber: Because whatever we do, we can’t stop ourselves from making it bigger and more successful and more terrifying and more necessary. Uber makes everything so easy, which means it shows us who, and what, we really are. It shows us how, whatever objections we might say we hold, we don’t actually care very much at all. We have our beliefs, our morals, our instincts. We have our dislike of douchebags, our mistrust of bad behavior. We have all that. But in the end, it turns out that if something’s 10 percent cheaper and 5 percent faster, we’ll give it all up quicker than we can order a sandwich.'
