SHOT BY THE POLICE: BOSTON & BEYOND

by Blackstonian
Courtney shared this story from Blackstonian:
Just like the rest of the country, Boston's cops bring in white people alive and kill black people they're trying to arrest or question.

LOCAL COP SHOOTINGS This list is a compilation of cases from Boston and beyond. Including: Cambridge, Framingham and the Cape. Each incident is the responsibility of that Police Department, but is indicative of a Statewide and Nationwide epidemic of People of Color being killed by Police.

  • BPD Killed 5 people in 1988 alone. 4 out of 5 were Black
  • BPD Killed 6 Between 1995 and Nov. 2000
  • BPD Killed 8 Between Nov. 2000 and Sep 2002
  • BPD Killed 2 Between June 2004 and July 2004
  • BPD Killed 8 from 2005 to present
  • BPD Killed 3 from 2013 to present
  • Since 1988 29 people have been killed by the BPD
All Victims were Black, Latino and Cape Verdean BPD now has a regulation that expressly forbids firing at a vehicle, unless the occupant first displays a weapon. Former commissioner Paul Evans put that rule on the books in 2002, to mollify a public aghast at eight fatal civilian shootings by Boston police officers in a 23-month stretch, culminating in Eveline Barros Cepeda (a 20 yr. old Mother) being shot unarmed in the back of a car. The BPD has a pattern of determining that these shootings are “justifiable” and The Boston Globe stated that the shooting of Willie Murray, jr. 2/12/02 is the first time since 1991 that a Boston Police officer faced criminal charges in a fatal shooting, the city later paid $75,000 settlement (6/29/07).

denis reynoso

lynn policeDenis Reynoso – 29 yrs. old

Shot & Killed by Lynn PD 8/5/2013

A short primer on who Denis Reynoso was:

WHO: Denis Reynoso, USArmy (Ret.) – served in Kut, Iraq diffusing IED’s

WHO: Denis Reynoso, passed Firefighter’s exam was awaiting placement

WHO: Denis Reynoso, father of 2 boys. 1 of whom witnessed his murder

WHO: Denis Reynoso, beloved fiancée, who was buried on his nuptial day

WHO: Denis Reynoso, 2nd generation Dominican-American

WHEN: September 5th, 2013 ~10:00a

WHERE: King’s Lynn Apartments

WHAT: Denis Reynoso was home watching his 5-year-old son at approximately 11:00a when the police pounded on the door and demanded entry. Denis refused them entry, and they then forced their way into Denis’ home. A struggle apparently ensued, and Denis ended up with two bullets in his torso and his son was covered in his daddy’s blood. Denis died shortly later at Lynn Memorial Hospital

WHAT: A 911 call was placed to Lynn PD at approximately 10:50a complaining about a man ranting and raving in the street in front of King’s Lynne Apartments. Upon arrival officer’s claim that Denis’ name was given to them by the apartment manager and a “us postal worker”. The police indicated that they busted through the door, because they were concerned with the child’s welfare.

WHAT: In a later police report, police claim they had no knowledge that the child was in the apartment, hoping to further bolster a claim of self-defense.

WHAT: Officers claim that Denis “lunged for” an officer’s holstered weapon. In ensuing struggle, officer managed to hold the barrel of a semiautomatic pistol while it discharged two rounds into the ceiling of the apartment. While this was happening, another officer came around the corner and ended Denis’ life.

WHAT: The notion that a trained Explosive Ordinance Disposal officer would lunge for a holstered weapon is ridiculous and strains credibility.

WHAT: Police had no warrant to enter the house. If the police didn’t know that the child was in the apartment when Denis was shot, why did they break into his apartment in the first place?

WHAT: Essex County DA spent 3+ months dragging his feet before clearing the police of any wrongdoing.

WHAT: Lynn Police have taken home the message that they need better holsters. Yup. That’s the result of this tragedy… everyone goes back to work, and holsters “will be looked at”.

Willie L. Murray Jr. – 37 yrs. old

February 12, 2002

37 yrs old killed in Roxbury, Crawford St. February 12th, 2002 by BPD officer Shawn West (Black Cop)

According to the Boston Globe, “For the first time in more than a decade, a Boston police officer could face criminal charges after using deadly force in a fatal shooting. Police and Suffolk County prosecutors said yesterday they will convene a grand jury to investigate the death of Willie L. Murray Jr.”

A man sitting in the front seat beside Willie Murray Jr. when he was shot described the terrifying moment. He said he watched as West shoved the barrel of his gun in the crack of Murray’s opened window, ordered him to open the door. Murray was shot after his foot slipped off the brake and the car rolled forward.

The grand jury probe was a rare move that may put the case into the hands of a civilian jury. The Boston Globe stated that this is the first time since 1991 that a Boston Police officer will face criminal charges in a fatal shooting.

UPDATE: 6/29/07 Five years after Willie L. Murray Jr. was shot to death by a Boston police officer (Black Cop Shawn West) after a traffic stop in Roxbury, the city agreed yesterday to pay $75,000 to settle a wrongful death suit that was about to go to trial in federal court.

Levi Hart – 14 yrs. old

1981

14 yrs old killed in Roxbury 1981 by BPD Officer Richard Borque

Levi Hart, a 14-year-old African American youth from Roxbury, Mass., was killed in a police chase. (Hart, and two other Roxbury youths had stolen and car. When the officers caught up to them, Hart was shot, arguably by Richard Bourque in an act of police brutality.)

James Bowden

January 1975

In January 1975 two white undercover Boston police officers gunned down an innocent black man at the Mission Hill housing project, and then were accused along with other Boston police in a bungled scheme to cover it up. While on stakeout on a suspected getaway car used in an armed robbery, the two gunned down a black man who entered the car. The two claimed the man had a gun and they shot in self-defense. Police investigation decided it was a rightful shooting. The man’s widow knew her husband would not be carrying a weapon and became determined to prove her husband’s innocence. Attorney Lawrence O’Donnell of Boston, a former officer himself, conducted a three-year investigation on behalf of the widow, Patricia Bowden, which prompted two federal juries to agree in a historic verdict that the death of James Bowden “was malicious, willful, wanton or reckless,” and the result was a landmark legal decision which included a settlement of $843,000 for Bowden’s widow and two children. In more than 100 years, no one had won such a judgment against any police department.

Former Boston Phoenix reporter Dave O’Brian was on assignment to write a feature story about Boston’s Tactical Patrol Force, O’Brian was in the back seat of the police cruiser along with a news photographer. When the shooting occurred, he was crouched on the floor in fear. His role became crucial, though, because his notes about what happened in the aftermath contradicted police.

Looking for a tall, thin man, the police stake out the wrong car, then shoot a man who’s 5 feet 4 and weighs 180 pounds and who’s never been accused of a crime. Their versions in court contradict those of eyewitnesses, and also one another. A gun is planted at the scene to incriminate Bowden, but it’s the wrong type. Crucial tape recordings from the dispatcher’s office are missing. The police arrest O’Donnell’s son on a trumped-up charge, and beat him.

Maker builds a 3D printed compound bow #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Matt

Maker builds a 3D printed compound bow that can shoot at 10 meters, from 3Ders.org:

…Cho has been working on this project for a while and has gone through quite a prototypes. The latest Vincy Compound Bow Mark 3 is the best and fully functional. The Vincy Compound Bow Mark 3 is an improved version of Mark 2. The Mark 2 has a draw weight (the force required to hold the string stationary at full draw) of 6kg. According to the laws of Hong Kong, crossbows with draw weight of more than 6 kg are defined as arms. So all Cho’s previous designs has draw weight of no more than 6 kg. “But with draw weight of 6 kg, you can only shoot a chopstick about 6 meters,” says Cho.

Somehow he decided to power up the version 3 by adding extra fibraglass. The Vincy Compound Bow Mark 3 uses 4X 30/6/600 fiberglass and also features 3D printed drop-away arrow rest and adjustable cable tension device. he draw weight of the Vincy Compound Bow Mark 3 is 13kg, which can shoot things from 10 meters away.

…Cho calls himself a prototype maker. His previous projects include all kinds of home made hi-tech and low-tech stuff, such as 3D printed airsoft pistol shotgun, rail gun, ETG (Electrothermal Gun), crossblow, and the 3D printed compound bow….

The US bill to phase out wonky symbols on the back of gadgets is now a law

by Josh Lowensohn

The legislation designed to do away with printing various symbols and regulatory compliance numbers on our gadgets in favor of displaying those things within software has been signed into law. President Obama today signed the the E-Label Act, which was introduced by senators Deb Fisher (R-NEB) and Jay Rockefeller (D-W.VA) in July, and quickly made its way through both the House and Senate this fall. It allows manufacturers to put things like FCC symbols, ID numbers, and other labeling in a software menu, instead of physically printed or labeled on a device.

The bill's authors argue that the change could make electronics easier and less expensive to produce. They also say it will become exceedingly useful on smaller gadgets like smartwatches, where space comes at a premium. Still, the change doesn't mean certain gadgets can go out into the world naked. Some regions require designations — like Europe's "CE" mark — if they are to be sold there, though it depends on what the gadget is. The need for the labeling on US devices was originally introduced in 1973, some 39 years after the FCC was created, and nearly a decade before the first handheld cell phone went on sale.

Windows 10 To Feature Native Support For MKV and FLAC

by timothy
jones_supa writes Windows Media Player is going to become a more useful media player for those who want to play geeky file formats. Microsoft has earlier confirmed that Windows 10 will come with native support for Matroska Video, but the company now talks about also adding FLAC support. Microsoft's Gabriel Aul posted a teaser screenshot in Twitter showing support for this particular format. It can be expected to arrive in a future update for people running the Windows 10 Technical Preview. Not many GUI changes seem to be happening around Media Player, but work is done under the hood.

Play With Your Food – Open Toys by LeFabShop #3DxToys #3DThursday #3DPrinting

by Matt

Open Toys by LeFabShop Thingiverse

Play With Your Food – Open Toys by LeFabShop:

…The Open Toy project is the result of a 2013 workshop at Domaine de Boisbuchet. Samuel N. Bernier had decided to use material waste from the band saw, such as cork and wood, to create toys by 3D printing small accessories with a MakerBot he had brought on site. He designed six accessories that would transform the found objects into planes, helicopters, birds and so on.

It’s was a week after the project had been presented, while looking at the Domaine’s garden, that Bernier had the idea to replace the wood and cork from his project by comestible material such as vegetables and fruits. The vegetables also had the advantage of being easier to pierce without tools than wood.

The project was left behind during almost ten months when Thomas Thibault, intern in Bernier’s design team at le FabShop’s creation studio, started creating new parts for the collection. The rocket and submarine parts are from him.

The Open Toys were presented for the first time in October 2014 during a workshop at the Autodesk Pop-Up gallery, in Paris. The kids present at the event transformed with great interest potatoes, carrots, eggplants and cucumbers into cars, sea vehicles and space ships. The Mister Potato from de digital fabrication age had just been invented….

Incredible solar flare (photo) – largest recorded sunspot group of the last 24 years

by adafruit

Solar Flare from a Sharper Sun.

Solar active region AR2192 was the largest recorded sunspot group of the last 24 years. Before rotating off the Earth-facing side of the Sun at the end of October, it produced a whopping six energetic X-class flares. Its most intense flare was captured on October 24 in this stunning view from the orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory. The scene is a color combination of images made at three different wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light; 193 angstroms shown in blue, 171 angstroms in white, and 304 angstroms in red. The emission, from highly ionized Iron and Helium atoms, traces magnetic field lines looping through the hot plasmaof the Sun’s outer chromosphere and corona. Beneath, the cooler solar photosphere appears dark at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. The exceptionally sharp composite image has been processed with a new mathematical algorithm (NAFE) that adapts to noise and brightness in extreme ultraviolet image data to reliably enhance small details.

European parliament votes in favor of breaking up Google

by Megan Geuss

In a vote on Thursday, European Parliament members voted 384 to 174 in favor of a resolution that calls for the unbundling of search engines from other commercial services to ensure competition among online companies. Although Google is not named specifically in the resolution, it's clearly targeted at the dominant search engine.

The resolution would still have to be approved by the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, to take effect, but the overwhelming vote in favor of separating search from other online products increases the likelihood that Google could face a major regulatory headache.

In a press release, the European Parliament called on EU member states and the European Commission to “break down barriers to the growth of the EU's digital single market” (a “single market” refers to the EU as an association of 28 countries trading freely between each other without restrictions). The Parliament also “stressed the need to prevent online companies from abusing dominant positions.”

Dog escapes at National Dog Show, devastates dog handler

by Rodger Sherman

The miniature pinscher made a run for it.

The National Dog Show has been pretty much like every National Dog Show -- an opportunity for everybody in the country to watch puppies on Thanksgiving -- except for one adventurous miniature pinscher, who got away:

We have an escapee! #TheDogShow pic.twitter.com/htTcRi3WeM

— NBC (@nbc) November 27, 2014

We didn't find out how it got loose from its handler -- or, for that matter, how of all the dogs in the show, the strong-for-its-size-but-still-a-dog-that-includes-the-word-MINIATURE-in-its-name min pin got loose, but we do know that the handler quickly realized that HER WORLD WAS OVER FOREVER

49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh And His Family Won't Be Having Turkey On Thanksgiving | ThePostGame

by gguillotte
Harbaugh revealed this week that, after seeing a somewhat distressing clip during Sunday Night Football, he and his wife are considering alternates to turkey. The clip in question was used during a stoppage in the game, and it was meant as a lighthearted way to incorporate turkeys into the broadcast. "We were watching the Sunday Night Football game," Harbaugh told reporters this week. "We were planning on having turkey, but then they showed this piece where they were showing all the turkeys and everything and my son Jack and Katie and Addie, 'Look at the turkeys. Look at all the turkeys there.' And they were getting excited looking at the turkeys." "And then the next shot was they had loaded the turkeys onto a truck and they were driving them away and the kids were like, 'Where are they going?'," Harbaugh said. "And we kind of thought maybe we won't have turkey this year for Thanksgiving. So, we're in discussion on that. We'll have some tofu or something." - See more at: http://yahoo.thepostgame.com/blog/chompions/201411/jim-harbaugh-san-francisco-49ers-nfl-football#sthash.d9siXUHI.dpuf

Ferguson Cops Once Beat an Innocent Man and Then Charged Him With BLEEDING ON THEIR UNIFORMS

by Kevin

via Russian Sledges

"Somehow, a federal magistrate ruled that the perjury and Davis's injuries were too minor to sustain his due-process and excessive-force claims."

Wait—that's got to be an exaggeration. It's not like the reporter is actually quoting the charge sheet—

"On and/or about the 20th day of Sept. 20, 2009 at or near 222 S. Florissant within the corporate limits of Ferguson, Missouri, the above named defendant did then and there unlawfully commit the offense of 'property damage,' to wit, did transfer blood to the uniform," reads the charge sheet.

Okay then.

Ferguson Police Dept
No Yelp reviews yet, but only getting 1.2 stars on Google+

As Michael Daly reports at The Daily Beast, the address where the defendant was said to have so wantonly damaged these officers' uniforms is in fact the address of the Ferguson Police Department, which recently took over from the colon-searchers in Deming, New Mexico, as America's favorite. Did the above-named defendant go down there voluntarily and throw blood upon their uniforms? No he did not.

The above-named defendant was 52-year-old Henry Davis, who was Henry Davis but not the Henry Davis they were looking for. This Henry Davis had the bad luck to be caught in a driving rainstorm on the highway, reportedly missing the exit for St. Charles and ending up in Ferguson. Having pulled over to wait out the rain, he became the prey of an officer who ran his plate and found an outstanding warrant for "Henry Davis."

The two Henry Davises had different middle names and Social Security numbers, but these details, and the corresponding likelihood that the person in custody was an entirely different human being not suspected of anything, do not seem to have been important. Though the booking officer realized the problem, he did not let Davis go. When Davis objected to being locked up and forced to sleep on a cement floor, the officer summoned others. Words were exchanged, probably—you know how people smart off in Ferguson when being hassled for no reason—and Davis was beaten and kicked in the head.

Henry DavisIn this emergency-room photo, you can see where Davis got the blood that he allegedly "transferred" to the uniforms of the officers who beat and kicked him. Possibly while they were beating and kicking him, but the report is not totally clear as to when said transfer occurred.

To be honest, there are reasons to believe that it never occurred at all. Such as the fact that the officers involved all admitted under oath that it didn't. That's one pretty good reason.

According to the report, which quotes from the depositions, one officer basically admitted under oath that he had lied under oath when he signed the criminal complaint against Davis. At that point it had presumably become more important to lie about beating Davis in the first place—he had sued by then—than to go after him for blood-related uniform damage. All the officers, in fact, claimed none of them struck Davis and that they did not see him bleeding. A little awkward, considering they had charged him with bleeding on them.

Somehow, a federal magistrate ruled that the perjury and Davis's injuries were too minor to sustain his due-process and excessive-force claims. Kind of astonishing. The case is on appeal, though, and Davis's lawyer suggested that recent events in Ferguson might lead that court to take the claim a little more seriously.

The Daily Beast also notes that the officer who has since been identified as the one who shot Michael Brown had been on the job for about two years at the time of the Davis incident. Did he learn from it? We don't know yet. Not for sure, anyway.
