Google drops three OS X 0days on Apple

by Dan Goodin

Don't look now, but Google's Project Zero vulnerability research program may have dropped more zero-day vulnerabilities—this time on Apple's OS X platform.

In the past two days, Project Zero has disclosed OS X vulnerabilities here, here, and here. At first glance, none of them appear to be highly critical, since all three appear to require the attacker to already have some access to a targeted machine. What's more, the first vulnerability, the one involving the "networkd 'effective_audit_token' XPC," may already have been mitigated in OS X Yosemite, but if so the Google advisory doesn't make this explicit and Apple doesn't publicly discuss security matters with reporters.

Still, the exploits could be combined with a separate attack to elevate lower-level privileges and gain control over vulnerable Macs. And since the disclosures contain proof-of-concept exploit code, they provide enough technical detail for experienced hackers to write malicious attacks that target the previously unknown vulnerabilities. The security flaws were privately reported to Apple on October 20, October 21, and October 23, 2014. All three advisories appear to have been published after the expiration of the 90-day grace period Project Zero gives developers before making reports public.

Avid is making a free, but limited version of Pro Tools

by Josh Lowensohn

Avid's Pro Tools software is not cheap, something the company seems to have realized with a new, completely free version of its digital audio studio with a more limited feature set. The new version is called Pro Tools First, and when it ships sometime in the next couple of months, it will give musicians a way to use Avid's software without subscribing to any services or having to buy any hardware. It's a different approach from what Avid was doing with Pro Tools Express, a similarly feature-limited version of its software that was bundled with its Mbox hardware.

It's a small sample of features

The free price tag gets you a considerably more limited set of features than you'd get in Express, including a maximum of four track inputs instead of eight, and support for just three projects. It's got the same limit of 16 MIDI tracks that Express has, as opposed to the full version's 512 tracks. You also can't export your projects as an MP3, or to iTunes and Soundcloud (there's a full chart of what you can and can't do here). In that regard, Avid's designed First to let you spend money to add features, though not quite like buying the full version (which starts at $899). Instead, it's more like a freemium app, with Avid's App Store selling bundles and plug-ins, as well as storage for extra projects that get synced to the cloud. It's unclear just how far Avid plans to take that, but it's quite clear that the general idea is to push you towards getting the full version of Pro Tools once you've outgrown this one's limits.

Avid says Pro Tools First will arrive as a free download sometime in the first quarter of this year. The company also announced a $29.99 per month license for the full version of Pro Tools 12, as well as a shared production feature for Pro Tools projects in the cloud.

Navy Commander at Guantanamo Base Fired Amid Alleged Affair, Suspicious Death - Yahoo

by gguillotte
The statement declined to give additional details because of an ongoing investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), which is focused on the death of Christopher Tur, a civilian employee at the Navy Exchange on the base who had moved to Guantanamo with his family in June 2011. Tur, 42, was found dead in the waters off the base on the morning of January 10, a day after he had been reported missing, said Navy Region Southeast spokesman Mike Andrews. A U.S. official said there was no obvious cause of death. The official said that information came to light during the investigation into Tur’s death that led the Navy to relieve Nettleton of command. Officials said the investigation found that Nettleton had allegedly been having an affair with Tur’s wife Lara, the director of the Fleet and Family Services Center at the base. Adultery is a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Portland is one of a few cities where short-term rentals posted on Airbnb are legal and taxed, thanks to a law that passed last summer. But hosts are supposed to sign up for a fire safety inspection and pay $180 for a permit. And the city estimates less than 10 percent have done it.

Great Job, Internet!: A supercut of every knob, switch, and interface in Star Wars

by Christopher Curley

One of the enduring appeals of Star Wars’ world-building is its lived-in look. This supercut by Dino Ignacio on Vimeo takes a closer look at Star Wars: A New Hope’s many knobs, switches, levers, tools, primitive computer screens, and occasional holograms that make this world-building credible. These interfaces are often messy and alien in function, but the attention to detail in creating them sells the idea that Star Wars inhabits a complete universe with its own rules.

In light of director J.J. Abrams’ commitment to practical effects and sets in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, now’s a good time to revisit the design of the original Star Wars. And while Star Wars’ designs came from a distinctly 1970s point of view (and technological limitations) the series’ “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” setting means that what seemed like a vision of ...

Super Bowl 2015: Richard Sherman says Tom Brady is not who you think he is

by Jason Marcum
firehose

"They were trying to suspend Marshawn for gold shoes. That really affects the game if you suspend Marshawn for gold shoes."

Richard Sherman doesn't think the public knows who Tom Brady really is and doesn't care if deflated footballs decided the AFC Championship.

Richard Sherman doesn't believe Tom Brady is who everyone perceives the Patriots' quarterback to be. Sherman and the Seahawks have only faced Brady once, and that was in a 2012 regular-season matchup. The stakes will be much higher this time around when both teams meet in the Super Bowl.

Sherman famously got into the face of Brady following the Seahawks' 24-23 victory in 2012. That incident came after Brady told Sherman to come find him after the game when he thought New England would emerge victorious.

As for Brady, Sherman thinks the national perception of him isn't an accurate depiction, via Pro Football Talk:

"I think people some time get a skewed view of Tom Brady," Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman told reporters on Wednesday, "that he’s just a clean cut, does everything right, and never says a bad word to anyone, and we know him to be otherwise, but in that moment of him being himself, he said some things and we returned the favor. Unfortunately he apparently didn’t remember what he said, but I’m sure at those moments of yelling at the ref, I’m sure he was saying, ‘Good job, you’re doing a fantastic job, keep it up.'"

As far as the Deflategate controversy, Sherman doesn't believe it will impact the Super Bowl and doesn't expect the NFL to hand out any potential discipline before the game, according to Comcast Sportsnet New England:

"It didn’t have much effect on the game, and if it did, if it’s against the rules, then it’s against the rules. But you’ll see that it’s not going to have any effect on this game. Nobody is going to get suspended, nothing is going to happen, they’re going to play this game, whatever they did ... The risk-reward was greater."

"They were trying to suspend Marshawn for gold shoes. That really affects the game if you suspend Marshawn for gold shoes. But then you got balls being deflated, and that’s an issue."

Sherman remains optimistic that his elbow injury, which affected him during Seattle's NFC Championship win over Green Bay, won't be an issue come game time. Sherman reaffirmed his postgame comments from Sunday and said that there is no way he'll miss the Super Bowl.

Simon Pegg to Co-Write Next Star Trek Movie With Doug Jung - "Replicator, please make me a bunch of Cornetto cones."

by Victoria McNally

hmmmmmmm

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

simon-pegg-star-trek

Expect Scotty to save the day even more than he usually does, possibly with the help of a new ensign who looks suspiciously like Nick Frost.

Deadline is reporting that Simon Pegg will tackle the third film in the relaunched franchise, along with Dark Blue writer and Big Love producer Doug Jung. Pegg’s own writing credits include the TV show Spaced (in which he famously remarked that only the even-numbered Star Trek films have any merit—guess it’s time to break that streak?); the Cornetto trilogy of Sean of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and At World’s End; Run, Fatboy, Run; and Paul.

While it’s no doubt that Pegg has nerd cred pouring out of his ears and that many of the films he’s helped to write are pretty fantastic, it remains to be seen if his style will match up with what’s expected of a Star Trek film—even a modern one full of explosions and running like these new ones are. At least anything’s a step up from Into Darkness, right?

Tumblr wants its best artists to create ads people actually like

by Jacob Kastrenakes
firehose

ha ha great

Tumblr's beautiful, GIF-filled feed is what keeps bringing visitors back, and it wants to make sure the feed stays that way even as brands begin to fill it with ads. To that end, it's announcing the formal launch of what it's calling the Creatrs Network, a curated group of artists who excel on Tumblr and can help brands make ads that people actually like. Tumblr says that it's been running tests with this network for the past year and has already used it to run successful campaigns with Axe, Gap, and Olay, among others.

If ads look good, people may even share them

Rather than running ads that look like they could be plastered up on a billboard, Tumblr is hoping that brands will tap its network to find someone who actually knows what works on Tumblr. That's probably going to be GIFs, but it's also going to be GIFs that are composed in a way that they feel like something you'd want to share. Tumblr really wants the ads to fit in as though they were any of piece of art — it even says that artists will receive credit and links back to their page (in addition to actual payment for their work).

Tumblr is working with hundreds of artists as part of the Network. It also has a far smaller group, simply called Creatrs, who work on Tumblr-specific events like GIFing major events. So far there's no way for artists to apply to be part of either network — right now, Tumblr is just finding them — but that may change as it grows more mature. Even though the network is only being made public today, Tumblr says that it's already paid out around $250,000 to its Creatrs.

This may just be the start of Tumblr's work with artists on its platform. David Hayes, Tubmlr's head of creative strategy, suggested that over the next year we'll see more products roll out that are meant to give creators more power. In particular, he spoke to the number of Tumblr blogs that have turned into books, suggesting that Tumblr may be able to do more to enable that transition. Ads may be one of the less-exciting places to start, but it's also one of the most important for Tumblr. That's how it makes money, but with ugly, intrusive ads, it would end up driving users away. Creatrs Network may be the solution to stopping that — and to making sure its users never even notice.

New study finds e-cigarettes could release 15 times more formaldehyde than tobacco

by Sonali Kohli
firehose

meanwhile, in Portland + NEJM

It doesn't look particularly healthy.

E-cigarettes have been controversial since manufacturers started touting them as the solution to smoking—no tobacco, and instead of smoke they produce a vapor that makers claim is much less harmful than traditional cigarettes.

Now, new research suggests that vaping with devices turned to a “high voltage” can actually produce more of one harmful chemical—formaldehyde—than is found in normal cigarettes. That’s according to a letter from Portland State University researchers published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

E-cigarettes require no tobacco and nothing burns, and thus they give off no smoke. Instead, with each “puff” the e-cigarette releases a little bit of the heated liquid in a cartridge into vapor form, for the user to inhale. Users can choose the “voltage” at which this vapor is released.

Formaldehyde is used for a range of purposes, from household products to preserving dead bodies, and the US government has classified it as a carcinogen. These researchers analyzed the vapor produced by the e-cigarettes and found dangerous levels of formaldehyde. In fact, they found that the formaldehyde that a vaper would be exposed to from high-voltage e-cigarette use is five to 15 times more than the exposure from smoking normal cigarettes.

Representatives of the vaping industry insist that few people would use the high-voltage setting because of the harsh taste, and that is the only setting at which formaldehyde was found.

But doctors have been debunking the “e-cigarettes are harmless” theory for a few years now. E-cigarettes still have nicotine, which is addictive, can contribute to causing cancer, and is associated with birth defects in children. The vapor is marketed as nearly harmless, yet a review of published data last year found that there isn’t enough research on its long-term effects to come to such a conclusion.

One of the letter’s authors, James F. Pankow, told NBC that it’s still too early to fully understand the negative effects of e-cigarettes. “But the bottom line is there are toxins, and some are more than in regular cigarettes. And if you are vaping, you probably shouldn’t be using it at a high-voltage setting.”

50 Shades Won’t Include The Infamous Tampon Scene, So Here, Have This Fan Re-Creation - Holy f***. Sweet mother of all... Jeez.

by Sam Maggs

'Let me remind everyone that if someone tries to get you to sign a sex contract, it’s not BDSM. If someone tries to control where you work, it’s not sweet. If you feel nervous telling your partner that you want to see a friend of the opposite sex, there is a problem. Jenny Trout has written a great post about all the signs of abuse in 50 Shades, and I highly recommend giving it a read. In fact, if you’re curious about 50 Shades but don’t want to subject yourself to the horrible text, check out Trout’s “Jenny Reads 50 Shades” series, or the equally hilarious and elucidating blog, I Detonate Around Him.'

The video is sort of NSFW in the weirdest way possible.

Here’s the thing about 50 Shades of Grey. If you’re going to make the horrible source material into a film, you might as well go all the way, right? Sadly, the filmmakers have decided to omit a crucial scene from the film - the tampon scene. One fan won’t let that stand, however, and has seen fit to create the scene in all its CG glory.

And yes, before you ask, this is a real thing that happens in a real book that was really published and real people bought real copies of. Here, let Cookie Monster read it for you (NSFL):

Honestly, this post is mostly just an excuse to remind you, gentle reader, that 50 Shades is not an accurate representation of the BDSM lifestyle. 50 Shades of Grey glorifies what is in no uncertain terms an emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive relationship. As a survivor of an abusive relationship it terrifies me to think that women look at books and films like 50 Shades and its direct source material, Twilight, and romanticize the relationships they see there as desirable and worthy of emulating.

Let me remind everyone that if someone tries to get you to sign a sex contract, it’s not BDSM. If someone tries to control where you work, it’s not sweet. If you feel nervous telling your partner that you want to see a friend of the opposite sex, there is a problem. Jenny Trout has written a great post about all the signs of abuse in 50 Shades, and I highly recommend giving it a read. In fact, if you’re curious about 50 Shades but don’t want to subject yourself to the horrible text, check out Trout’s “Jenny Reads 50 Shades” series, or the equally hilarious and elucidating blog, I Detonate Around Him.

Also, the book is completely unsexy, but it looks like Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan already have that down pat.
