Louis CK set to play a talking terrier in The Secret Life of Pets

by Kwame Opam

Louis CK's next role, like so many great actors before him, is officially a talking dog. The AV Club reports that the comedian's long-gestating next film has just been titled The Secret Life of Pets, helmed by Despicable Me director Chris Renaud. In the film, CK will play a terrier forced to deal with its master's new pet, a "sloppy mongrel" played by Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet.

Despite the uninspired premise, the movie does boast an impressive roster of talent. Kevin Hart is attached to play a bunny bent on the annihilation of mankind. Joining him are big names like Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, and Hannibal Burress. (We're not sure how Universal Pictures pulled it off either.) The Secret Life of Pets will hit theaters on July 8th, 2016.

Open source license usage on GitHub.com.

Open source simply isn’t open source without a proper license. Unless you’ve explicitly told others that they can modify and reuse your work, you’ve only showed others your code; you haven’t shared it. Here at GitHub, we’re big fans of open source, so we set out to better understand how our users approached licensing their code by looking at license usage across public, non-forked repositories, in hopes of encouraging more users to share their work with others.

Man makes mockery of Bloodborne by beating it with a Rock Band guitar controller

by Samit Sarkar

Bloodborne is a difficult video game, people will tell you. You'll die a lot, they'll say. It may make you want to snap your controller in half, they'll warn you.

Those people aren't necessarily wrong, but Twitch streamer Benjamin "bearzly" Gwin ignores their words. He's made a name for himself with, as he puts it, "challenge runs of Dark Souls using terrible controllers." Last year, Gwin completed Dark Souls with a Rock Band controller, and later managed the same feat with Dark Souls 2. Last month, he even beat the game with the bongos from the GameCube title Donkey Konga.

Naturally, Bloodborne was next on Gwin's hit list.

Gwin's run of "Guitarborne" included the challenging boss battle you see above, the Shadow of Yharnam. The fight is made even more treacherous by the "poor movement/camera controls" afforded by the Rock Band guitar, according to Gwin.

"Choked several times on this one," he added.

Gwin used ConsoleTuner's Titan One USB accessory to allow him to play Bloodborne, a PlayStation 4 game, with an Xbox 360 guitar controller. You can see his crazy button mapping above. One example of the insanity he's putting himself through: Moving right is mapped to the controller's tilt feature, which triggers Star Power in Rock Band games.

If you're curious about vanilla Bloodborne, check out our Let's Play of the game with Danielle Riendeau and Phil Kollar, starting with the first episode below. You can also read our review.

Columbia University Doctors Ask For Dr. Mehmet Oz's Dismissal

by timothy
circletimessquare writes Dr. Mehmet Oz serves as vice chairman of Columbia University Medical Center's department of surgery. He is a respected cardiothoracic surgeon but his television show has been accused of pushing snake oil. Now other doctors at Columbia University want Dr. Oz kicked off the medical school faculty. Dr. Oz has responded on his Facebook account: "I bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves. We provide multiple points of view, including mine which is offered without conflict of interest. That doesn't sit well with certain agendas which distort the facts. For example, I do not claim that GMO foods are dangerous, but believe that they should be labeled like they are in most countries around the world." In their letter, the doctors accuse Dr. Oz of quackery: "Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops. Worst of all, he has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain."

In fight against spammers, Steam now restricts accounts until users show hard cash

by Colin Campbell

In an attempt to combat phishing and spamming, Steam today announced a raft of activity restrictions on accounts that do not show purchase activity.

Valve's digital store will no longer provide certain community benefits until a user has spent $5 or added a minimum of $5 to their account. The benefits include sending friend invites, opening a group chat, voting on Greenlight or submitting content on the Steam Workshop. A full list is here.

"We've chosen to limit access to these features as a means of protecting our customers from those who abuse Steam for purposes such as spamming and phishing," offered a Steam update. "Malicious users often operate in the community on accounts which have not spent any money, reducing the individual risk of performing the actions they do.

"One of the best pieces of information we can compare between regular users and malicious users are their spending habits as typically the accounts being used have no investment in their longevity. Due to this being a common scenario we have decided to restrict certain community features until an account has met or exceeded $5 in Steam."

TV Club: Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro

by Austin L. Ray

In the summer of 2013, comedian Tig Notaro made a video for her fans. “If you’d like for me to be on your rooftop, your basement, your backyard, living room, garage, in your barn,” she began. “You tell me where I’m going.”

The comedian’s request received more than 1,000 responses, and Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro features a few of the best. Or, at least, the ones that inspired a visit from Notaro. But to start things off, the documentary shows a selection of videos from folks who didn’t make the cut: Someone who made a tiny paper puppet “Tig in a blanket.” A guy who says that “the audience would be me and my dog, Patches.” Something called The West Bestern with “a green screen area” in a terrifying basement. A woman who made what appears to be a casserole, and then describes ...

John Gruber On Third-party Apple Watch Apps: They Suck and Are Really Slow - Slashdot

by gguillotte
During this week's episode of John Gruber's podcast, The Talk Show, Gruber sat down with Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal to talk all things Apple Watch. About two hours and 9 minutes into the podcast, both Gruber and Stern began lamenting the poor performance they saw with third-party Apple Watch apps. 'It makes me question whether there should be third party apps for it at all yet,' Gruber noted. The pair also took umbrage with what they perceived to be a poor design choice for the Apple Watch app screen, with both noting that the app icons were far too small to be practical.

Box Office Milestone: 'Furious 7' Crosses $1 Billion

by gguillotte
In just 17 days, Furious 7 is crossing the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It’s a new record for the fastest climb to the major milestone (The Avengers, Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 crossed $1 billion in 19 days). Plus, the film is the first Universal project to make it to the $1 billion mark in its original run (1993’s Jurassic Park reached $1.044 billion after the 3D re-release in 2013). The film’s other records include the second-biggest worldwide opening of all time ($397.2 million) behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and the highest-grossing domestic ($147.2 million) and international ($250 million) openings in Universal history.

“And no, before you ask, it’s not possible to take time off from work to go to the doctor. Employers are often highly resistant to this and aside from the loss of wages, employees may face retaliation for asking for time off to go to their psychiatrists and other mental health care providers. It doesn’t matter if such retaliation is illegal — even if someone could afford to retain an attorney, employers are adroit at finding reasons to explain why, for example, they cut an employee’s hours or moved her to a different shift with fewer tips, leaving her making less at the end of the week.”

Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich created the non-profit Skateistan in 2007, a grassroots project that connects youth and education through skateboarding in Afghanistan. The organization, which has since grown to an award-winning international NGO, caught the attention of London-based photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson and inspired her to visit the program in Kabul in 2012—especially after learning 45% of the students were female.

In Afghanistan skateboarding has spread to become the number one sport for women, as they are forbidden to ride bicycles. Soon after arriving and entering the girl’s world, Fulford-Dobson was accepted by the young Afghan skateboarders. She photographed the girls with natural light, helping to expose their personalities through simple portraits. Within the images you can see the girls’ natural confidence, images that capture the subjects both posed and candidly skating through the indoor facility.

“I met so many impressive women and girls in Afghanistan: a teacher as tough and determined as any man; young Afghans in their early twenties who were volunteering at an orphanage and were passionate about being seen as strong and willing to fight for themselves, rather than as victims of circumstance; and girls who were being educated to be leaders in their communities and who were already thinking carefully about their own and their country’s future,” said Fulford-Dobson.

Fulford-Dobson won 2nd prize in the 2014 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize with Skate Girl, 2014 (one of the photographs taken while on location in Kabul) and her exhibition Jessica Fulford-Dobson: Skate Girls of Kabul opens at Saatchi Gallery in London on April 15 and runs until April 28, 2015. Great Job, Internet!: Preserve your childhood with this wood carving of the map from Ocarina Of Time

by Dan Selcke

If you’re old enough to remember a time when video games were still principally purchased at retail outlets rather than downloaded from behind the cold remove of a keyboard, you may remember video game instruction manuals, the little paper inserts that so helpfully put all that running from left to right into context. Sometimes, the instruction manuals would include a map of the fictional world featured in the game. Paper, however, is so fragile—an errant wind or stray match can spell the end of it, so many of those charming designs were lost to time.

Neutral Ground has a more permanent alternative. The website has teamed up with illustrator Alex Griendling to produce a series of wooden plaques etched with the world maps from noted video games. First up is a version of the map from The Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time, a game from a ...
