"When Madonna came out with her hit Vogue you knew it was over. She had taken a very specifically..."

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

When Madonna came out with her hit ‘Vogue’ you knew it was over.

She had taken a very specifically queer, transgender, Latino and African-American phenomenon and totally erased that context with her lyrics: ‘It makes no difference if you’re black or white, if you’re a boy or a girl.’

Madonna was taking in tons of money, while the Queen who actually taught her how to vogue sat before me in the club, strung out, depressed and broke.

So if anybody requested ‘Vogue’ or any other Madonna track, I told them, ‘No, this is a Madonna-free zone! And as long as I’m DJ-ing, you will not be allowed to vogue to the decontextualized, reified, corporatized, liberalized, neutralized, re-genderized pop reflection of this dance floor’s reality!

Cincinnati uses Chipotle location, flying burrito photoshops to recruit football players

by Rodger Sherman

"Come to Cincinnati! You'll score cool burrito touchdowns!"

College football teams have photoshopped players next to Beyonce and next to Kim Kardashian to make them want to commit to a school. Cincinnati decided to shoot a bit lower and more realistic, using a recruiting pamphlet to tell a player that THERE'S A CHIPOTLE TWO BLOCKS FROM THE STADIUM.

Ben getting recruited with burritos @BSkowronek10 pic.twitter.com/bXcF0y9OrS

— Austin Mack (@Austin_Mack10) May 11, 2015

Yup, they photoshopped Ben Skowronek, a 3-star wide receiver from Fort Wayne, leaping to catch a flying burrito. (They even kinda blurred the burrito a little bit so it really looks like it's flying.)

On the one hand, this is a brilliant strategy. Chipotles are everywhere and high schoolers everywhere love them and they need to convince high schoolers to play football.

However, we'd urge college football players not to be use this as their only determining factor. We have been on several college campuses, and guess what: there is always a Chipotle nearby. And football players spend a lot more time at the practice field and the dorms than they do at the actual stadium, so you shouldn't be too concerned about the proximity between the stadium and Chipotles.

We do wonder if this is a one-off or if Cincinnati is photoshopping other players besides Skowronek. Are there photoshops out there of QBs chucking burritos? Defensive ends sacking burritos? Kickers booting them? I sincerely hope so.

TV Club: Community: “Basic RV Repair And Palmistry”

by Joshua Alston

“I’m sick of it! It’s a show. It’s not a show. It’s your show. It’s my show. It’s a good show. It’s a bad show. I’m sick of it. I don’t want to hear the word ‘show’ again.” — Jeff Winger

No announcement has been made regarding the future of Community, but with two members of its dwindling cast attached to shows officially ordered to series (Ken Jeong’s Dr. Ken on ABC and Fox’s Grandfathered with Paget Brewster), Community feels imminently close to the “...and a movie” phase of its meta prophecy. Season six hasn’t been consistent, but some of its episodes have been surprisingly agile and feel nothing like a sixth-year sitcom possibly nearing the end of its run. “Basic RV Repair And Palmistry” isn’t one of those episodes, and not only because it’s pretty light ...

Amateurs Produce Amateur Cryptography

by Bruce Schneier

Anyone can design a cipher that he himself cannot break. This is why you should uniformly distrust amateur cryptography, and why you should only use published algorithms that have withstood broad cryptanalysis. All cryptographers know this, but non-cryptographers do not. And this is why we repeatedly see bad amateur cryptography in fielded systems.

The latest is the cryptography in the Open Smart Grid Protocol, which is so bad as to be laughable. From the paper:

Dumb Crypto in Smart Grids: Practical Cryptanalysis of the Open Smart Grid Protocol

Philipp Jovanovic and Samuel Neves

Abstract: This paper analyses the cryptography used in the Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP). The authenticated encryption (AE) scheme deployed by OSGP is a non-standard composition of RC4 and a home-brewed MAC, the "OMA digest'."

We present several practical key-recovery attacks against the OMA digest. The first and basic variant can achieve this with a mere 13 queries to an OMA digest oracle and negligible time complexity. A more sophisticated version breaks the OMA digest with only 4 queries and a time complexity of about 2^25 simple operations. A different approach only requires one arbitrary valid plaintext-tag pair, and recovers the key in an average of 144 message verification queries, or one ciphertext-tag pair and 168 ciphertext verification queries.

Since the encryption key is derived from the key used by the OMA digest, our attacks break both confidentiality and authenticity of OSGP.

My still-relevant 1998 essay: "Memo to the Amateur Cipher Designer." And my 1999 essay on cryptographic snake oil.

ThreatPost article. BoingBoing post.

Note: That first sentence has been called "Schneier's Law," although the sentiment is much older.

Photo Printing Website Artisan State Allows Access To All User-Uploaded Photos

fulldecent writes: Popular photo printing website Artisan State, which specializes in bound photo books mostly for weddings or other events, unintentionally makes all its uploaded user photos available publicly for download. This case study shows how their photos are able to be downloaded and discusses the things vendors should think about when considering security of seemingly private user content. The case study also discusses how this flaw was reported to the vendor, but unfortunately never fixed. This follows other articles on Slashdot discussing security disclosure. How do you report vulnerabilities to vendors? Do you support publishing them if they are not fixed in a reasonable time?

Fantasy's Othering Fetish, Part 3

firehose

bonus reminder that I need to get/read the Imaro series

(1) Read the greats like Tolkien, Miller, GRRM and other traditional Eurocentric writers. Watch Game of Thrones. Count the stereotypes, “othering” and moments of wince-worthy racialization. Catalog and study them. When you see your writing drifting in that direction, change course.

(2) Read the guys who seem to get it right. Read fantasy works by PoC and non-Westerners, set in non-Western cultures. Notice the distinction between depicting varied cultures and people as different versus exotic. It’s tricky, takes some serious research, but eventually you begin to see it.

(3) Can you stand by your creation? No one here is about censorship. If you feel you really need to make one of your characters in the mold of the noble savage, go right ahead. But ask yourself if your reasons are really valid for your storyline, or if you’re just falling back on an easy stereotype. And when the criticism comes down, don’t act all brand new. You knew what you were doing. Own up to it and deal. If you can handle that without filling up my white tears mug, go ahead. If you can’t though, then do better.

(4) Spend a brief bit of time brushing up on some postcolonial theory, or at least a bit of critical race theory. Sometimes simply “not knowing” is a big reason for some well-meaning blunders. But in this information age, ignorance makes for a poor excuse. SFF author and scholar Jaymee Goh’s Rules Before Engaging is a great start.

(5) Being a PoC doesn’t grant an automatic pass. Because this isn’t about “good or bad people,” it’s about a structural system that affects all of us. Many of these “othering” notions are transnational and no respecters of borders or backgrounds. I’ve read fantasy by PoC that skirts the line, or goes trudging headlong into exoticism, “othering” and other disturbing tropes—because it’s what was learned. Be self-aware.

(6) Beyond issues of race and ethnicity, there are ways of mishandling or stereotyping numerous types of differences, not limited to gender, sexuality, religion, disabilities, etc. It wouldn’t hurt to examine when and where you’re going down the stereotype hole in addressing any of these. A great primer is Nisi Shawl’s and Cynthia Ward’s, Writing the Other: A Practical Approach.

(7) Even if you try your best, you might still “Do It Wrong.” Sorry. Life ain’t fair. You can minimize your risk of doing it wrong by thinking about what you’re doing–or as a friend of mine likes to say, just deciding to give a f–. This might mean you look for friends, beta readers and writer’s groups with some diversity. Others might pick up on troubling things you may have missed. But criticism may still fly your way, warranted or not. Don’t get defensive. Remember, people are placing whatever you wrote into a much larger historical context. It’s bigger than you. See it as a teaching moment, and next time just strive to do better. The decent act of actually “giving a f– ” will inevitably earn you some praise.

In the meantime, there’s no escaping the “othering” fetish that permeates mainstream popular fantasy. All the new literary creations in the world aren’t going to make veiled Haradrim or Daenerys body surfing crowd of slaves go away–not any time soon. They’re not likely to stop a few more sequels to 300. All the rest of us can do is make certain to point out, address and deconstruct these troubling tropes when we see them. And strive to create countering visions.

Obama’s plans for inking new trade deals suffered a big defeat—this time, at the hands of free traders

by Tim Fernholz
firehose

'Among those dropping support for the so-called Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA, was its strongest Democratic backer (and one of its authors), senator Ron Wyden of Oregon. His surprising decision to turn against the bill came after Republican leadership declined to consider three other trade bills, including a Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) measure, which would help workers displaced by low-wage labor overseas, and a customs bill that many Republicans considered a poison pill because it contained rules, opposed by the White House, to challenge currency manipulation by other countries.

I will vote no on TPA if other trade bills that help the American middle-class – like TAA and enforcement – are not moved forward.

— Ron Wyden (@RonWyden) May 12, 2015'

Senate Banking Committee member, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., listens to testimony on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, from Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen. Yellen said Tuesday that the U.S. economy is making steady progress, but the Fed remains patient in raising interest rates because too many Americans are still unemployed, wage growth remains sluggish and inflation is too low.

For weeks, supporters of US president Barack Obama’s request for trade-negotiating powers—considered necessary to ink major new trade deals that would cap his term in office—feared his own party would sink him. Those fears were proven correct today as Congressional Democrats blocked consideration of the powers.

Unless a deal can be found soon, this looks like the beginning of the end for Obama’s dream of a free-trade zone stretching across the Pacific and covering 40% of the world’s economic production.

The final blow arguably came when Republicans—ostensibly Obama’s allies in cutting down trade barriers—declined to link the negotiating authority to measures meant to bolster trade enforcement and assistance to workers who lose their jobs due to overseas competition. With that, support of even pro-trade Democrats dried up. Six senators who were part of the committee that proposed the fast-track negotiating authority and brought the bill to the floor voted against it today; with their support, the legislation would have been enacted.

Among those dropping support for the so-called Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA, was its strongest Democratic backer (and one of its authors), senator Ron Wyden of Oregon.

— Ron Wyden (@RonWyden) May 12, 2015

Wyden’s staff tweeted a link to a video in which his Republican counterpart, senator Orrin Hatch, promises to work bring those bills to the floor together. Hatch, meanwhile, complained that Obama failed to bring his own party in line. And he said that Democrats were re-casting his expression of bipartisan goodwill as an ironclad commitment, effectively to find an excuse to bow to pressure from the left.

The pressure came mainly from a group of senators, led by Massachusetts’ Elizabeth Warren, who fear that giving the White House trade-negotiating powers will make it easier for corporate interests to push back against domestic regulation. This vote is another reminder of the populist Warren’s ability to move her party, even against a sitting president; indeed, Warren’s stand has contributed to Hillary Clinton’s ambivalence on trade, which left Obama exposed.

But it doesn’t explain why trade-loving Democrats backed off the bill. For that, you have to go back to the purpose of the TAA.

Democrats who support trade understand that it has costs and benefits. Even if they don’t buy Warren’s critiques about corporate empowerment—they might note that the US has never lost in trade arbitration with a corporation—they fear for the workers who will lose their jobs and require assistance as the economy responds to new trade rules. That’s why they wanted the TAA, which in its current form would provide unemployment benefits and skills training to those who could provide evidence that newly lowered trade barriers led to the loss of their jobs, attached to the trade-negotiating authority.

So why wouldn’t the Republicans commit to making it part of the package?

“It would gain Democrats in Senate, [but] complicate efforts to move bills through the house due to House Republican opposition” to TAA, a Democratic Senate aide said. Indeed, the measure isn’t expected to be incredibly effective, and it triggers the conservative reflex against government aid. But that’s exactly why Senate Democrats want more assurances that Republicans will back such transition aid after (or if) it passes their chamber.

Republican leaders say they will bring the bill back to the floor soon, but it’s not clear how they will woo the Democrats they need without committing to more robust aid.

Rather than adapting one of the popular characters from their sketch show, though, the movie—titled Keanu—will be about two friends who have to pose as drug dealers so they can save their cat, the eponymous Keanu. Now, as reported by Variety, Method Man is in talks to join Key and Peele in Keanu, but the article doesn’t say who he might be playing. If we had a say—and we don’t—we think Method Man would be good as the voice of the cat. Of course, nothing about this movie has given us the indication that the cat will talk, but come on. Wouldn’t that be fun? Who ever heard of a movie about a talking cat!?! He could even just ...

Good Food Here Cart Pod to be Replaced by Condos

firehose

'a four-story, 27-unit, senior co-housing community called PDX Commons. Apparently, half the units have already been sold.

The nearly 5-year-old cart pod (once home to the Sugar Cube, Eurotrash and the original Lardo), is currently home to about 15 carts, including the perennially popular Viking Soul Food and new-ish Monk's, a cart that specializes in East Coast style deli sandwiches. Monk's owner Andrew Heckcrote says the lot's owner hasn't told the carts about the development, but no one is surprised. "We saw it coming," he says. "There was that scare last summer. I wasn't here but I heard about it."

He said the cart owners are examining their options. "A few people are talking about opening a brick and mortar. A few others are talking about getting a different lot and trying to move the whole pod all at once. I think personally my cart and the food I do would do better in a different neighborhood anyway. I was thinking downtown or even the suburbs."

No word yet on when the carts will be asked to move, but construction is scheduled to begin at the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016. So visit those carts now while you can. In addition to the units, there will be 1,000 square feet of ground-level space for a coffee shop or restaurant.'

Gorgeous Multilayered Panoramic Glass Sculptures That Capture the Distinct Personalities of Places Around the World

by Lori Dorn

Central Park South January
Central Park South, January

Artisans Lucie Boucher and Bernie Huebner of Stone Ridge Glass in Waterville, Maine have created a gorgeous line of Glasscapes, three-dimensional, multi-layered glass panoramic sculptures that capture the distinct personality of the subject. Being that each piece is handmade, many of the sculptures can be customized with removable pieces.

Glasscapes are a unique cross between high-end art glass and light sculpture. Many of the designs are interactive, with fully manipulable glass sets. …Design work is the most fun, of course, especially when moving into uncharted territory such as Glasscapes. The consensus view is that flat-lapping (beveling and polishing glass edges on successively finer gauge diamond discs and cerium oxide felts) is not as much fun.

Las Lajas Cathedral

Las Lajas Cathedral is a cathedral located in the municipality of Ipiales and built inside the canyon of the Guaitara River. The architecture of this cathedral is of gothic revival architecture built from January 1, 1916 to August 20, 1949, with donations from local churchgoers with the intention to replace an old 19th century chapel. The story of the cathedral’s creation is that in 1754 an Amerindian named “Maria Mueces” and deaf-mute daughter “Rosa” were caught up by a very strong storm. They found refuge between the gigantic Lajas and to Maria Mueces surprise the girl exclaimed “the mestiza is calling me…” and pointing to the lightning illuminated painting over the laja.  [via]

They tried to give her this more human, empathetic side but they rushed the shit out of it and wrote it really poorly and one-dimensionally. You can totally do a character with those pathos and not have it come off as shitty or demeaning toward women or anything but it was all so hurried and sloppily handled.'

Jason Schreier: Avengers: Age of Ultron isn’t a movie, it’s an advertisement for 1293139213 other Marvel movies.

Nathan Grayson: Bingo, and not a very good advertisement. It’s an advertisement paired with a largely irrelevant side story. The Marvel movies build to things. Or at least, they’re supposed to. Phase One built to Avengers. I am not sure what phase two built to, but it certainly wasn’t this.

Evan Narcisse: Is Phase Two even officially over?

Jason Schreier: Evan, as our resident comics expert, did you understand what was up with Thor and the cave? Because the movie sure didn’t explain it.

Evan Narcisse: That was the most bullshit part.

New Product Observations from the WSWA Convention

by Camper English
firehose

spiced whiskies, "a honey rum and a maple rum"

There are two things really happening at the WSWA (Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America) Convention: Brand owners are meeting with their existing distributors from around the country in one central location, and smaller/start-up brands are trying to convince distributors to pick up their products. I wrote a little bit about that here a few years ago.

The floor of the convention is where those new brands try to get new or more distribution. The products that they feature, clearly, are ones that they believe are sellable. Thus the floor of the convention is where we see what brand owners think is the future.

I haven't attended the convention in the last 2 years, but I have three times in the past. Here is my trend write-up from 2012. Here are some observations/patterns I noticed at the convention held in Orlando in 2015:

New Creams

Lots of cream liqueurs, as usual, but they're branching out into new and more interesting flavors. I saw a green tea cream liqueur and one copying the flavor of a Shamrock Shake.

There were less dessert flavored creams this year, and less Irish creams.

  • IMG_7775
  • IMG_7777
IMG_7777

Tea Time

Beyond that green tea cream above I saw a few different tea products, especially a few tea flavored vodkas. Not sweet tea, just tea.

Coco-Nuts

Coconut flavor is everywhere, hoping to ride on the back of the success of Malibu and Ciroc.

Sexual Feeling

The low-end products, as usual, go for sex or gender-specific marketing: Macho-branded spirits and girlie-decorated products.  Penthouse Vodka

Less Flavored Vodka Than Usual

People are paying attention to the way the winds are blowing.

Everything Spiced

Given the global success of spiced rum, many brands are releasing spiced whiskies.

IMG_7776

Differently sweetened rums

Beyond coconut and spiced flavored rums, I also saw a honey rum and a maple rum.

Hybrid Spirits

These have been around for a while, but one can’t help noticing: RumQuila, VodQuila, AgaVie

Light Whiskey

I wouldn't say it's a trend, but a stand-out product is Sinfully Thinn Light Whiskey. These take a cue from the diet vodkas, in which the flavored vodkas have less alcohol and therefore less calories than regular vodka. Their "original light whiskey" most likely fits the US definition of "light whiskey" (meaning mostly-neutral), but at 40% ABV it would not be diet whiskey, as the calories are in the alcohol.

  • IMG_0001

Best In Show

My favorite two finds at the show were products not on the US market yet.

Belsazar Vermouth from Germany comes in Dry, Red, Rose', and White. The rose' was particularly tasty.

CEF14wCWEAEsMssAnd there is a line of agave products with great branding that I didn't get a chance to try called Colectivo Regional. They have a tequila, raicilla, mezcal, bacanora, sotol, and charanda. Hopefully they're good, but no matter what they're intriguing.
