Sunday Brunch: Ham and Grits with Red Eye Gravy

by Sydney Oland

Editor's note: Each Saturday morning we bring you a Sunday Brunch recipe. Why on Saturday? So you have time to shop and prepare for tomorrow.

Ham and grits make an ideal morning after brunch when you've spent too much time on a bar stool the night before. This version of the classic takes ham steaks and dices them into cubes in order to maximize flavorful crisp edges on even the leanest grocery store ham steaks.

On a morning when you're feeling fragile I find that brunch is better delivered ASAP, hence the quick cooking grits in this recipe. But if you're a purist, and not feeling as bad as you'd thought, feel free to take the time and make the classic version.

Either way, have this brunch with some strong coffee and you'll be back in shape in no time.

Hilarious African knockoff video games

by Jason Kottke

The Gameological Society's Joe Keiser went shopping for video games in Nairobi and found a ton of PlayStation 2 knockoffs. Like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Kirk Douglas:

GTA Kirk Douglas

Full disclosure: this article exists so I can tell you all about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Kirk Douglas. Just look at it! It's exquisite. The game itself is as grand as the cover. It is San Andreas, with the load screens replaced by EXTREME closeups of Kirk Douglas-and occasionally his son Michael Douglas, because hey, close enough, right? In the game, the main character appears to be a rough approximation of Kirk Douglas. Oh, and all the missions have been removed, so there's nothing to do.

And RoboCop:

Robocop Sparkle

I do not doubt RoboCop's commitment to Sparkle Motion.

A hand-painted rose, as a bookplate

by Caleb Crain

A bookplate of a rose, hand-painted by Helen Costello Chase, 1953

This hand-drawn and hand-painted bookplate is in a copy of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse that I bought last year. Note the preliminary pencilling, still visible beneath the ink, of both the signature and the flower. Extrapolating from an obituary that I found online, it seems that in 1953, when Helen Costello Chase was nineteen, she was dancing with the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet in London. Later she became a florist and a painter. "Her mode of transportation was not automobile but ballet slipper," her eulogist declares.

NEW ENGLAND ACCENTS.

by languagehat

Rhode Island Public Radio has a six-minute interview with "Brown University and Trinity Rep.'s master of dialects Thom Jones" about how people speak in various parts of Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, ending with the infamous Cranston accent (in which "Cranston" sounds like "Cvanston"). Unfortunately, Jones talks about language in an entirely impressionistic way, using incomprehensible terms like "round" as if they meant something clear and obvious, but it's still fun to hear him imitate the various dialects. Thanks, Sven!

Unrelated, but does anyone know what happened to Gilliland? I mean, what happened is clear enough—if you go there, there's a notice "This journal has been deleted. All posts in this journal will be permanently deleted from the server 30 days after the account owner deleted it"—but I'm curious why such a dependably good read was suddenly axed.

BahngBoyer's Xbox - Feb 8 2013

I thought BahngBoyer just wanted to listen to music or watch a DVD. Turns out he was there to game. With a gamer score of 9,405, I should have known that was the case. He played Borderlands 2, and after we were done, BahngBoyer hugged me with his eyes. It was one of those platonic hugs... you know...

World Bank: “Brazil is officially the world’s most closed economy”

by Brazilian Bubble
Brazil is the country that imports the least in the world, as a proportion of GDP. The newly released data from the World Bank shows how closed is the Brazilian economy, despite complaints from local businessmen about foreign competition. In 2011, according to the World Bank, Brazil’s imports of goods and services were equivalent to [...]

Preserved: Cara Cara Orange Marmalade and Marmalade Blondies

by Lucy Baker

From Sweets

My local produce market sells Cara Cara oranges for $1.50 each. Highway robbery, right? And yet I can't stop buying them. There is just something absolutely irresistible about their bright pink flesh and juicy sweet flavor. I crave them especially in January and February, when I need a burst of citrus and a big dose of vitamin C.

This Cara Cara orange marmalade is all about comfort. (Can marmalade be a comfort food? I sure think so!) Tangy chunks of peel, a whiff of honey, and a hint of spice from my secret ingredient, herbal tea, offset the sweet flesh of the oranges. I used Twinnings Hebal Unwind, but feel free to substitute whatever you have on hand.

The marmalade is slow to set up, so don't be alarmed if it looks loose at first. It took my batch a full 24 hours to set completely. If the peel floats to the top of the jars, gently turn and tilt them as they cool to redistribute it.

This marmalade is delicious on a proper English muffin or crumpet. But it was so good I was inspired to take it one step further, swirling it into a blondie batter studded with chocolate chips. They make a bright winter upgrade to traditional blondies.

Mattel Unveils 1966 'Batman' TV Series Ken And Barbie Catwoman

by Caleb Goellner

Feb 9th 2013 By: Caleb Goellner

As an action figure guy, I've been pretty stoked on Mattel's upcoming line of 6" Batman action figures based on the 1966 live action TV series starring Adam West. If you're a Barbie collector, however, you may want to make sure you're sitting down to look at Mattel's newly revealed Lee Meriwether/Julie Newmar/Eartha Kitt-style Catwoman Barbie and West-flavored Batman Ken. Each of the cosplaying dolls can now be preordered through the official Barbie Collector site for $34.95 a pop. They're not expected to ship until June, so if you're desperate for an in-scale Barbie Batmobile for these two to cruise around in (or, say, a Skipper doll dressed as Robin), now's a good time to start letting Mattel know.

milstil: When the girls dress like the boys x white tie and...

milstil:

When the girls dress like the boys x white tie and tails VIII. Marlene Dietrich understood men’s clothes better than most men. And style wise she was far ahead of her time. In a time in which women were more or less stuck to skirts and dresses, she started raiding the male wardrobe to add to her collection of dresses and gowns. She had her men’s tailors, shirtmakers and cobblers (she frequented quite a few) make her suits, blazers, sports coats, shirts and custom made trousers. But only Knize in Vienna and Eddie Schmidt in Hollywood made her many tails. Fun trivia: Dietrich’s starched shirt cuffs were directly attached with a hidden buttoned fastening in the sleeve of her dress suits. So she wore sleeveless shirts with her tailcoat, that allowed for quick costume changes and slimmer, more feminely cut jacket sleeves. And while costume jewelry was always worn with stage costumes, for Marlene’s favorite white tie and tails, the cuff links were always her own- from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels or Trabert & Hoeffer.

"In the opening scene of Bridget Jones’ Diary, the lecherous Uncle Geoffrey sidles up to Bridget at..."

In the opening scene of Bridget Jones’ Diary, the lecherous Uncle Geoffrey sidles up to Bridget at her mother’s turkey curry buffet and asks that dreaded question: when is she going to get “sprogged up”? “You career girls,” he leers, “can’t put it off forever. Tick-tock, tick-tock.”

Childless women – whether they’re 32, like Bridget, or 67, like Dame Helen Mirren, whose comments in this month’s Vogue have reignited the debate on childlessness – have had to put up with jibes like this for centuries. When a woman reaches a certain age, she is expected to start thinking about having children. If she doesn’t, society demands an answer. But why doesn’t she have children, people will whisper. Isn’t she able to have children? Doesn’t she want children?

In the past, Mirren has answered with defiance. “I have no maternal instinct whatsoever,” she once said. “Motherhood holds no interest for me.” In her latest interview, however, Mirren, who has been married for 15 years, admits that she always expected to be a mother. “It was not my destiny,” she says. “I kept thinking it would be, waiting for it to happen, but it never did, and I didn’t care what people thought.”
Women, she adds, never gave her a hard time: “it was only boring old men. And whenever they went ‘What? No children? Well, you’d better get on with it, old girl,’ I’d say ‘No! F—- off!’”

Russian Search Engine Yandex Beats Bing

IOS 6.1 Leads To Battery Life Drain, Overheating For iPhone Users

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "We have started seeing an increase in iPhone issues related to battery life and overheating. All of them seem to be related to users upgrading their devices to iOS 6.1. Furthermore, Vodafone UK today began sending out text messages to iPhone 4S owners on its network, warning them not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to issues with 3G performance. The text reads 'If you've not already downloaded iOS 6.1 for your iPhone 4s, please hold off for the next version while Apple fixes 3G performance issues. Thanks.'"

Building a better NES

by Brian Benchoff

NES

The first model of the NES wasn’t all that great; just ask any one of the millions of six-year-olds who independently discovered blowing on a cartridge made it work. The second NES hardware revision, the top loader, was better but only had RF video output. These are the only two pieces of hardware that can play every single NES game, and even with years of hacking NES-on-a-chip devices, there’s still much to be desired.

[low_budget] over on the AtariAge forum decided he’d had enough of these hardware compromises and decided to build the first new NES hardware revision in 20 years. It’s got all the best features from both of its predecessors and a few new features not seen on any existing NES. There’s support for composite and RGB video generators, new and better amplifiers for the audio, no lockout chip, and a top loading cartridge slot to prevent bent pins on the 72 pin connector.

While [low_budget]‘s prototype works, it only does so by salvaging the CPU and PPU from a working NES. There’s still much work to be done on the prototype, but even if we’ll have to destroy our beloved NES, we’d love to get our hands on one of these improved consoles.

Chrome OS documentation hints the leaked Chromebook Pixel could be real

by Adi Robertson
firehose

christ

We're still not sure whether the high-resolution Chromebook Pixel purportedly leaked in a video last week is real, but developer François Beaufort — who's leaked Chome OS information before — has unearthed a piece of potential evidence. Beaufort has posted a link to a piece of documentation for a multi-colored "lightbar scheme." Here's part of the description:

Yet another set of tweaks to the lightbar patterns:

At Startup or wake from sleep, Google colors cycle in.

While running, > 25% power level in the battery: All blue, in a breathing effect (cycle up and down 30%).

While running,

Shutting down, or going into sleep: Cycle out the Google colors

Based on the above, the feature certainly isn't in existing Chromebooks, and it's consistent with a shot of the Pixel in Slinke.me's video. At around 1:15, we get a quick look at the back of the laptop, showing off a bar of Google-themed lights. Though it's no secret we'd like the Pixel to be real — its sleek looks and alleged 2560 x 1700 display would make for a great Chrome OS flagship — this isn't conclusive, and even if the lightbar is being built into future Chromebooks, the rest of the design may not match up to what we've seen. The documentation does, however, start lining up some dots between the leaked Pixel video and what we know about Google's future plans.
