'60 Minutes' profile of Twitter creator Jack Dorsey airing tonight at 7PM ET/PT

by Sam Byford

Tonight's episode of 60 Minutes features a profile of Jack Dorsey, the man who created Twitter in 2006 and now heads mobile payments company Square. In a clip from the interview by Lara Logan, Dorsey talks about how he was inspired to build Twitter after listening in on emergency dispatch communications with a police scanner as a child; Logan says he was "struck by the fact that everyone talked in short bursts of sound."

"They're always talking about where they're going, what they're doing, and where they currently are," says Dorsey. "and that is where the idea for Twitter came. Now we all have these cell phones. We had text messaging and suddenly we could update where I was, what I'm doing, where I'm going, how I feel — and then it would go out to the entire world."

The profile will also detail Dorsey's eventual ousting from Twitter and the founding of Square. It airs at 7PM ET/PT tonight on CBS.

Adult Swim uploaded a proper version of the Venture Bros. Season 5 sizzle reel (it debuted at a con, so up until this week only shakycam existed online). If you’re a fan, you’ve probably seen this already but I’ll share in case you’re late to the party.

May 19th, you guys. Brace yourselves mentally, emotionally, sexually (???)

'Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara' rated by Korean ratings board

by Jordan Mallory

hmm

'Dungeons and Dragons Chronicles of Mystara' rated by Korean ratings board A new Dungeons & Dragons game, Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, has been classified by Korean ratings board GRB and evaluated for consumption on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The classification lists Capcom Entertainment Korea as the game's publisher, which implies that Chronicles of Mystara may be a bundled re-release of Capcom's classic Dungeons & Dragons brawlers Shadow Over Mystara and Tower of Doom, both of which will reportedly be announced for PSN and XBLA during PAX East, according to Siliconera.

While the true nature of the game remains a mystery for now, we're keeping our fingers crossed that things will shake out the way they're looking. The last time Shadow Over Mystara and Tower of Doom were sold together was in Dungeon & Dragons Collection for the Sega Saturn, which we recently saw in a Akihabara resale shop for more than $300.

Duke Nukem 2 hits iOS next month

by Jordan Mallory
Duke Nukem 2 hits iOS next month
Duke Nukem's two-dimensional VGA romp through the alien-ridden, distant future year of 1998 is coming to various iOS devices next month, in celebration of the game's twentieth anniversary. Originally released in 1993 for MS-DOS, Duke Nukem 2 will be available for $1.99 and will be compatible with iOS devices iPhone 4S and newer, including iPad Minis and last-generation's iPod Touch.

As seen in the trailer above, Interceptor Entertainment's iOS port uses virtual button controls to navigate Duke through the game's 32 levels. While Duke's pre-3D adventures were a little bit more Contra than they were Doom, the franchise's sense of humor had already been firmly cemented in place, much like his hairstyle.

Previously-Unseen ‘The Hobbit’ Drawings By J.R.R Tolkien

From DesignTAXI:

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit, publishing house HarperCollins has produced a covetable collection of 110 original illustrations—’The Art of the Hobbit’—by J.R.R. Tolkien, of which two dozens have never been published before.

These rare drawings—which range from pencil sketches and ink line drawings to watercolors—were uncovered at the writer’s archives at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and only recently digitized.

While the published version of the children’s classic consisted only of 20 illustrations by its author, Tolkien had actually made more than a hundred pictures to help bring his legendary story to life.

You may know Chipocrite from his many covers of songs like New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” (featured at the end of this fake Legend of Zelda movie trailer), “Also sprach Zarathustra” or even his own work on his album Hit and Run.

What you may not know about Chipocrite is that he is a HUGE fan of the movie The Big Lebowski, so much so that he went about covering several of the movie soundtrack’s songs, including the very specific The Gipsy Kings flamenco cover of The Eagles’ hit “Hotel California”, featured here.

Scroll issue 9: Artdink

For the latest deep-dive feature, Ray Barnholt’s Scroll magazine offers a detailed examination of Artdink, a company I know damn near nothing about. A-Train and Aquanaut’s Holiday are series, and there are people who like them, and thaaaaat’s about the breadth of my encyclopedic knowledge on that subject.

This is a rad time to get into Scroll, which is still THE BEST. Issues 1, 3, and 4 are on sale for $2.50 as PDFs. Issue 2 is still free! Read them!

Making A Fake-Proof Driver's License

firehose

"Beginning in July, the state’s drivers who are seeking new licenses will be issued hard polycarbonate cards with photos that appear black and white, replacing the bendable color version, a move toward the monochromatic that is also being tried in several other states.

...

While the old-school images might seem odd, the new production method and a barrage of features both seen and unseen will make the licenses, officials say, virtually impossible to forge. Most critically, they say, the new licenses are laser engraved on rigid polycarbonate, replacing the current process of printing photos on more flexible material, which they say can be much more easily altered or fabricated. (While the photos at the D.M.V. will still be taken in color, the engraving is done in grayscale, hence the Ansel Adams feel.)"

Over the years, the authorities across the nation have tried all manner of tactics to combat fake drivers’ licenses. Holograms. Water marks. Even blunt red letters reading “UNDER 21.” Now, however, New York is turning to a new design with a retro look: portraits in black and white.

Apple Explains Why You Should Love Apple

An email Apple sent to its iPhone 5 customers makes me think that the round of bad press is getting to the company's executives, too. The email basically tells me, as an iPhone owner, that I love the product, and it reminds me why I apparently love the product. You know, just in case I happened to catch all the nifty gimmicks that Samsung's Galaxy 4 will carry.

'during his interrogation, an investigator leaned across the table and whispered: "Off the record, Bradley, I love the work that you do." '

We all know the feeling. Why not take a break from the fire hose of Twitter and RSS and check out our weekly roundup of essential writing from around the web about technology, culture, media, and the future? Sure, it's one more thing you can feel guilty about sitting in your Instapaper queue, but it's better than pulling in vain on your Twitter list again.

On urban hacking

Matthew Power profiles Bradley L. Garrett and tags along with him and his urban explorer friends as they explore London's off-limits, underground infrastructure.

GQ: Matthew Power - Excuse Us While We Kiss The Sky

Garrett was handcuffed and led through passport control, where his ID was seized. Fingerprints, mug shots, and DNA swabs followed. He was eventually led to a holding cell and then an interrogation room. There he was not formally charged but was informed that he was being investigated for burglary, property destruction, and criminal trespass, among numerous other possible charges. He was told he had been the subject of a manhunt by the British Transport Police. His alleged crimes were a blatant affront to the image of a high-tech security state London had constructed for itself. And yet, during his interrogation, an investigator leaned across the table and whispered: "Off the record, Bradley, I love the work that you do."

On Facebook

Following Facebook's recent redesign event, John Herrman takes a look at the midlife woes the social network has largely brought on itself.

Buzzfeed: John Herrman - Welcome To Facebook's Midlife Crisis

Facebook needs to make maintaining a Facebook account as compelling as creating one. And it’s not clear how Facebook can incentivize people to update their accounts — to trim old friends, to add new ones, to adjust all the various sliders and dials that power Facebook today. This is labor; it feels like doing repairs, not creating something exciting and new.

On 'Omni'

Brent Cox writes about the history of the groundbreaking sci-fi magazine Omni by taking a look back at the 1981 issue featuring William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic" short story. Peruse the entire run for free at Internet Archive.

The Awl: Brent Cox - The Future According To 1981: An 'Omni' Appreciation

At some point, and I reckon this was more towards the middle of high school, I realized that the layout of Omni resembled that of another magazine—Penthouse. There was a reason for that. Omni, launched in 1978, was the brainchild of Kathy Keeton. Keeton, was a South African, trained in ballet, who, in her 20s, became an exotic dancer in Europe (an AP story would later say she'd been one of the highest-paid strippers on the Continent). She met a young Bob Guccione when he noticed her reading the Financial Times between sets. Together they launched their intended competitor to Playboy, Penthouse. Keeton also wanted to start a magazine that was not just a science-fiction magazine, but also a science magazine.

On useless machines

Abigail Pesta looks at the history of the useless machine.

The Wall Street Journal: Author - Looking for Something Useful to Do With Your Time? Don't Try This

He also dreamed up the useless machine, although the name he gave it was the "ultimate machine." His mentor at Bell Labs, Claude Shannon, built one and kept it on his desk, where the science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke spotted it one day. "There is something unspeakably sinister about a machine that does nothing—absolutely nothing—except switch itself off," Mr. Clarke later wrote, saying he had been haunted by the device.

On divers

And in case you missed it a few weeks ago, check out Nathaniel Rich's fantastic piece on the new generation of divers working for oil companies in need of humans following the destruction wrought by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The New York Review of Books: Nathaniel Rich - Diving Deep into Danger

Not everybody is cut out for the job. A diver cannot be claustrophobic or antisocial, because he must spend much of his time in a tiny sealed capsule with several other divers. He must be well-disciplined and perceptive, for he is likely to encounter a variety of unexpected hazards on the job. Many divers are military veterans, or have worked as roofers or mechanics. "The best are those who have a great deal of confidence in themselves and their abilities," one former diver, Phil Newsum, told me. "You have to be willing to adapt to any situation. Philosophically, when you go out on a dive job, you’re expecting something is going to go wrong."

Pla has been playing football since kindergarten, and for the past two years, the 11-year-old has been holding her own on the gridiron.

Her playing time with the Catholic Youth Organization ended after last season when the Archdiocese of Philadelphia enforced its “boys only” policy for football, sidelining the All-Star guard and defensive end.

Members of a panel selected by the archdiocese voted to continue the boys-only policy as written. Despite the panel’s recommendation, on Thursday Archbishop Charles Chaput ordered the archdiocese to allow girls to play CYO football, according to a statement.

“The Archdiocese will allow for co-ed participation in CYO football, effective in the 2013 season,” the statement said, adding that the rule was provisional and will be reviewed in future seasons.

just so you’re sure this isn’t a pity party and you doubt a youth league’s designation of “All-star Guard and defensive end”, here she is sacking a QB

here she is making a pursuit tackle

here she is running with the ball away from the other team. (Thanks, photographer, for failing to say why. Presumably a fumble recovery.)

and here she is lead-blocking against three defenders. Note that all her teammates are wearing pink socks.
