WikiLeaks publishes five-hour conversation between Eric Schmidt and Julian Assange

by Sam Byford

Google chairman Eric Schmidt and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange secretly met in 2011 and held a lengthy interview, according to a transcript published on the whistleblowing site. The leak is surprisingly timely — Schmidt was apparently conducting research with Jared Cohen for the pair's book The New Digital Age, which is set to be released on Tuesday. Assange was under house arrest in England at the time the five-hour conversation took place.

Schmidt is "obviously sympathetic" to WikiLeaks

The conversation is a fascinating look into the minds of the two men, both of which have had immeasurable impact on issues surrounding technology over recent years. Topics move from the light-hearted such as Schmidt's bad experiences with Delta Air Lines and Assange's endless stream of "crazed" female visitors, to the heavier — Schmidt asks Assange to answer criticism that WikiLeaks has caused damage with its releases, while saying that "we are obviously sympathetic to" his side of the story. Assange later compares WikiLeaks' flow of unfiltered information to YouTube, where Google is unable to automatically review every submission made to the site.

Schmidt is also interested in why WikiLeaks publishes more information on Western democracies than more oppressive regimes, asking "Why are you not getting enormous numbers of anonymous USB drives about the bad documents in African countries that are run by these evil dictator types?" Assange replies that "we have gotten some decent African stuff," but makes the point that a lot of these countries don't use English for government business or "are not as networked."

You can read the full transcript of the conversation at WikiLeaks.

Nichelle Nichols (Uhura on the original series):”Whoopi Goldberg, she’s just marvellous. I had no way of knowing that she was a Star Trek fan. When I finally met her it was her first year on the Next Generation.

She loved the show so much and she told her agent she wants a role on Star Trek. Well agents go ‘Big screen, little screen, no, you can’t do that’. Well you can’t tell Whoopi ‘You can’t do that’.

And so they finally asked, and they had the same reaction at Star Trek office, specifically Gene. And she said, ‘I want to meet him and I want him to tell me to my face. If he tells me he doesn’t want me and why, I’ll be fine.’

Knowing Gene he had to take that challenge, and so he met with her. She said, ‘I just wanted you to tell me why you don’t want me in Star Trek.’

Gene said, ‘Well, I’ll just ask you one question and I’ll make my decision on that. You’re a big screen star, why do you want to be on a little screen, why do you want to be in Star Trek?’

And she looked at him and she said, ‘Well, it’s all Nichelle Nichols’ fault.’

That threw him, he said, ‘What do you mean?’

She said, ‘Well when I was nine years old Star Trek came on,’ and she said, ‘I looked at it and I went screaming through the house, “Come here, mum, everybody, come quick, come quick, there’s a black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!”’ And she said, ‘I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be, and I want to be on Star Trek.’

And he said, ‘I’ll write you a role.’

App of the Day: Icelanders Can Bump Phones to Make Sure They Aren't Related Before Sex

Are you terrified of love stories in Greek mythology? If you ever need to do a background check on your date to make sure he or she is not your distant cousin, well, there's an app for that. Software engineers in Iceland have scraped publicly available genealogy data to create ÍslendigaApp, a mobile Android app which allows its users to bump their phones together to check if they are blood-related before making any traumatic mistake. When a match is too close, the device will sound off an "inc*st alarm," notifying the two users that they should probably keep their clothes on.

Micro Games as a Game Design Experiment

by Kira Scott

In his graphic design manifesto, Frank Chimero throws down some essential design knowledge by saying “Take things away until you cry.” Antoine de Saint Exupéry, known for creating the Little Prince, declares “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” In his Ten Principles for Good Design, Dieter Rams says “Good design is as little design as possible.” I think you’re catching my drift here? All of these experts in art and design are speaking a similar truth. In design, less is often more.

Learning how to reduce your design to it’s essentials, and do it well, is one of the most challenging lessons for creators. I approach design primarily as a visual artist, so I reminisce about design classes meant to teach specific techniques. Form, repetition, pattern, color, proportion; these are every artist’s arsenal. But where is the design class to teach specific game design techniques? Mechanics, narrative, player agency, tone. While we all know these are parts of a roleplaying game design, it’s often hard to break a game down to it’s most essential design parts. What those parts are, and how they function, varies from designer to designer.

Recently on the interwebs, I’ve been seeing some Micro Games surface from a few different designers. There’s a history of micro-type games I suppose, or at least shorter and smaller games that don’t require gigantic rulebooks to play. Roleplaying poems come to mind as one example. Hit a Dude by Ryan Macklin is a game printed on a card that says “hit a dude, pass left”. Stuff like that. I’m certainly not an expert micro game historian (there’s more than these I’m sure!). What this current micro game design trend is revealing to me is something essential about how we’re doing roleplaying game design.

Notably, in the past month Epidiah Ravachol’s game Vast and Starlit has gained fast popularity. He’s remarked, among other things, that the process of designing a tiny game that is just under 445 words long was a fantastic experiment in roleplaying game design. Not only was the format so different from the typical roleplaying tome, the timeline also differed in that he designed a complete game from start to finish in a day. Coming from a game designer with years of game design insights in his brain, I found this perspective to be pretty interesting. Epidiah said:

Vast & Starlit took me a day. That’s the part that blew me away. I’ve got a lot to say about game design, and I totally thought I was going to have to spend the rest of my life saying only a fraction of it. But now I might be able to say it all before GenCon.

So designing in a micro format gave Epidiah the tools to be able to express some essential elements of game design. He had to. He only had 400 words, a tiny printspace, and a day to say everything he needed to about how to play that game. How do you communicate how to play an entire roleplaying game in such a tiny space? What do you actually need in a game in order to have it function? Break it down, reduce it until you cry. Less is more with these little games.

So something clicked for me while admiring that process of micro design. Micro Games like Vast and Starlit intend to do something specific, right. Communicate the complexities of roleplaying games in a tiny, succinct format. So say I did that on my own, for my own design purposes, only without the goal of creating a completed game. It would give me a chance to fuck things up with little commitment. To reduce down my concepts to their essentials and see what I get.

I posted these three micro parlor freeforms (I use that terminology partially in jest) kind of tongue and cheek on g+ and they were inspired by Epidiah’s insights for sure. What started as random became thoughtful though, and then became this post. These freeforms are like sketches of little ideas in my brain that could become bigger ideas. Experiments in tone, style, mechanics. I like it! I’m sure designers have utilized a similar technique while creating (it’s similar to sketching, or micro fiction). I don’t know why looking at Epidiah talk about his micro game process made sense to me, but it really did. How small of a thing can I write to communicate my design goals? Here they are:

Five women in heels play musical chairs to a DJ they can’t see. They’re competing for the DJs affections. The DJ can see them though, and manipulate when the song stops according to their own desires.

Five women in heels go out for a night on the town. Before heading home, they stop by an adult store and each buys a sex toy. They go home, learn how to use it, and all simultaneously post mysteriously on the Internet about what they thought it felt like.

Five women in heels sit in a circle and write down what they think is the best gift for any woman party (baby shower, sweet 16, bachelorette). They’re the passed around and quietly voted on which is best. The person with the most votes talks about which gift she thinks is the worst and why, in descending order. After everyone feels sufficiently bad, you collectively come up with five new parties to be celebrated by women that don’t currently exist.

I’d be embarrassed if anyone played these, they’re sketches of ideas, incomplete thoughts. I look forward to where these sketches are taking me though. I’m not a game designer, only an artist, so don’t listen to my game design advice. My artistic brain really clicked with this concept though. The similarites between micro game design and visual design are compelling. If any of this resonates with you, take a look at some Micro Games for inspiration, and sketch with me!

Most Projects On GitHub Aren't Open Source Licensed

by timothy
firehose

I have two projects on github and neither is worth having on github, much less open-sourcing
what about the most active ones? most popular ones? are they open source?

PCM2 writes "Kids these days just don't care about open source. That's the conclusion of the Software Freedom Law Center's Aaron Williamson, who analyzed some 1.7 million projects on GitHub and found that only about 15% of them had a clearly identifiable license in their top-level directories. And of the projects that did have licenses, the vast majority preferred permissive licenses such as the MIT, BSD, or Apache licenses, rather than the GPL. Has the younger generation given up on ideas like copyleft and Free Software? And if so, what can be done about it?" Not having an identifiable license is one thing, but it seems quite a stretch to say that choosing a permissive open source license is "not caring"; horses for courses.

An anonymous reader writes with a story at the Daily Dot: "Despite the protests of Internet privacy advocates, the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) passed the House of Representatives Thursday. The vote was 288-127. ... CISPA saw a handful of minor amendments soon before passage. A representative for the EFF told the Daily Dot that while they were still analyzing the specifics, none of the actual changes to the bill addressed their core criticisms. ... But also as was the case the year before, on Tuesday the Obama administration issued a promise to veto the bill if it reaches the president’s desk without significant changes." Techdirt has a short report on the vote, too — and probably more cutting commentary soon to follow.

Debian 7.0 ('Wheezy') Release Planned For 1st Weekend in May

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes with this good news from the Debian developers who have been working hard to release the next version of the distro: "We now have a target date of the weekend of 4th/5th May for the release. We have checked with core teams, and this seems to be acceptable for everyone. This means we are able to begin the final preparations for a release of Debian 7.0 — 'Wheezy'. The intention is only to lift the date if something really critical pops up that is not possible to handle as an errata, or if we end up technically unable to release that weekend (e.g. a required machine crashes or d-i explodes in a giant ball of fire). Every other RC fix that does not make it in time will be r1 material. Please be sure to contact us about the RC fixes you would like included in the point release!" Of particular interest to casual users, from the list of changes in 7.0: "Debian wheezy comes with full-featured libav (formerly ffmpeg) libraries and frontends, including e.g. mplayer, mencoder, vlc and transcode. Additional codec support is provided e.g. through lame for MP3 audio encoding, xvidcore for MPEG-4 ASP video encoding, x264 for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video encoding, vo-aacenc for AAC audio encoding and opencore-amr and vo-amrwbenc for Adaptive Multi-Rate Narrowband and Wideband encoding and decoding, respectively. For most use cases, installation of packages from third-party repositories should not be necessary anymore. The times of crippled multimedia support in Debian are finally over!"

Brutal Legend for Mac and Linux appears in Steam database

by Michael McWhertor

By Michael McWhertor on Apr 18, 2013 at 9:00p

Double Fine's heavy metal action-adventure-strategy game Brutal Legend may be spreading its wings to Mac and Linux, according to an update to the title spotted on Steam's database.

An update for the game scraped by Steam DB hints at broader OS support for Brutal Legend, which made its way to Windows PC in February. Double Fine has released Mac and Linux versions of past games, like Psychonauts and The Cave. It also addressed fan requests for Mac and Linux ports of Brutal Legend earlier this year.

"Hopefully there will be!" the developer wrote on its official Twitter account. "If it does well enough on Windows we'll be able to fund more PC platforms like Mac and Linux."

Double Fine's Chris Remo wrote on NeoGAF that the studio has "an eye towards ever-growing platform support."

"We can't promise anything," Remo wrote, "but I think you can look at our releases over the last couple years and see a consistent (if time-consuming) trend towards supporting as many personal computer platforms across our games as we can. It all costs time and money (otherwise all of our games would be on every platform by now!) but we're slowly trying to work towards a goal of heavily supporting open platforms."

We've reached out to Double Fine Productions to see what its plans for Brutal Legend are and will update with any new information.

Thanks for the tip, John.

Today in silly bans of PSY videos in South Korea …:

Psy’s new music video “Gentleman” is not only breaking YouTube records, hitting more than 145 million views in less than a week, it just got banned by his home country’s biggest TV broadcaster.

South Korea’s KBS, a state-funded broadcaster, said Thursday it was banning the video because it shows Psy kicking a traffic cone with a “no parking” sign on it. The TV network says it has a policy prohibiting the showing of videos that abuse public property.

That traffic cone totally deserved it.

The Creators of Papo & Yo Are Making A Game About Bullying

by Evan Narcisse

Staring today, millions more people will be able to play my favorite game of 2012. Papo & Yo—the semiautobiographical magical realism adventure that explores life with an abusive, addicted parent—comes out for PC today, after months as a PS3 exclusive. The move to another platform will help the critically acclaimed game get a lot closer to being profitable. (The game’s soundtrack is also available today and you’ll find exclusive tracks from it embedded in this post.)

Papo & Yo came from the indie dev team at Montreal-based Minority Media. I had a chance recently to speak to studio co-founder Vander Caballero about the lesson they learned making the game and what’s coming next from Minority. “The PS3 release was one of the top sellers on PSN and we’re happy with the numbers,” Caballero told me. “Papo cost $1.5 million to make and we’ve already made a part of our investment back. Hopefully, we are going to get the other part on Steam and make some profit. It’s a great opportunity for us because Sony really helped us to push the game out and make people know about it, and then they really helped us in the development, too. It was an amazing relationship.”

And Minority’s next creation will be incubating in a similar fashion. The studio’s upcoming game Silent Enemy is being developed for Ouya. “If you are an independent you have zero marketing money,” Caballero explained. “You have nothing. Then you need someone to support your project. So, if someone asks you for exclusivity and it’s going to help you to bring out your product into the market, I think that can be good. Sometime, I think it’s the only way to get something out.”

Some elements of Silent Enemy were outed by recent reporting but Caballero says that the game has changed a lot. “One of my partners is a Cree Indian from Northern Quebec. He said we have to make a really authentic game about Cree culture. It gets cold there, like -50. Survival there is really, really, really hard. I said I would love to do a real authentic hunting survival game about this experience.”

“We started developing for iOS,” Caballero continued. “But then, our main creative director there Ruben Farrus said, ‘Dude, we cannot do survival hunting games. That will not be a Minority game.’ I was like, ‘You’re right man. We have to change it. You find the angle. I’m going to help do it, but it has to be an emotional angle.’ "

“Ruben came back and said, ‘OK, we can do a game about bullying.’ I was bullied before,” Caballero told me. “Ernie, our partner, our Cree partner, he was bullied before because his father is white and his mother is Indian, so he got bullied in the reserve. We said, ‘Wow, this is a topic that lots of people will relate to. Let’s go for it.’ That’s where Silent Enemy is now. There’s still the native American themes in there but it’s totally changed from what it is now. It’s not about survival hunting anymore. It’s more about bullying and dealing with that.” The official description, with concept art, follows:

Set in a world of endless winter, and inspired by Minority Design Director Ruben Farrus’ experience with bullies and isolation growing up in a small town in Spain, Silent Enemy will require players to use shapeshifting abilities and the help of nature spirits on a quest to release spring back into the world. The game is currently in development for OUYA and tentatively planned for release in Q4, 2013.

“We were developing for iOS, but then what happened is we started finding all these limitations that we couldn’t do. For example, we couldn’t do full screen effects. So suddenly it’s “No, because something is really expensive.”

Caballero told me that that the constant balancing act between cost and creative ambition is a struggle that all indie developers face. “At the end of the day, though, it’s all worth it when we receive letters about Papo and hear people thanking us for doing the game. We want our games to touch people and it’s really good to hear that it’s working.”

Grumpy Old Fan | Happy anniversary, Lois Lane

by Tom Bondurant
firehose

I just like how she's flipping him off in the first panel of the first image

A Lois Lane sequence from Action Comics #1, by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster

Three panels which helped define a legend (from Action Comics #1, by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster)

Seventy-five years ago, on or about April 18, 1938, the company that would become DC Comics published the first issue (cover-dated June 1938) of a new anthology series. Today, Action Comics #1 is remembered mainly (and justifiably so) for introducing Superman.

Naturally, many of the elements and concepts from that first Superman story have changed over time. In Action #1, all we see of Krypton is its final fate. Pa Kent doesn’t have a first name, and Clark works for the Daily Star. There’s no Lex Luthor, no Jimmy Olsen, no Kryptonite, and no Superboy. Even Superman’s powers pale in comparison to what they would become.

However, two characters are already fleshed out pretty well, with motivations and dynamics instantly recognizable to today’s readers. One, of course, is Clark Kent, who creates the Superman identity to “turn his titanic strength into channels that would benefit mankind,” and who hides that strength behind a pair of glasses and a meek demeanor.

The other is Lois Lane.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster apparently created Lois from a mix of their own romantic longings. Les Daniels’ Superman: The Complete History (1998) cites Siegel’s crush on fellow student Lois Amster, who later “recalled only that Siegel ‘used to stare at me. He was a strange guy, and I never had any friendship or conversation with him’” (p. 19). While Shuster used a model named Joanne Carter for Lois’ appearance, per Daniels “[t]here seems little doubt that her spunk, enthusiasm, and determination had a real effect on the [character]’s personality.” Siegel, Shuster and Carter quickly became friends, and Siegel and Carter eventually married (p. 20).

Still, for decades “unattainability” defined the Clark/Lois/Superman relationship. That quality too is present, if only embryonically, in Action #1. Lois wants little to do with the cowardly Clark, but is drawn inexorably to the mysterious Superman who saves her from gangsters. Reinforcing the eternal triangle is Superman’s unwillingness to tell Lois the truth, ostensibly out of concern for her safety.*

Accordingly, Lois’ good name was not served (to say the least) by countless stories portraying her as various combinations of oblivious, conniving, foolish and/or possessive. At the other points of the triangle, Clark/Superman tended to come off as somewhere between pitying and condescending.  (Naturally, Kate Beaton has satirized both nicely.)  By the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, though, these stories were gradually being replaced with more nuanced portrayals, as Lois and Clark/Superman started to act more like real people. Lois was involved with both Clark and Superman — how that worked out, I’m not sure — and the four-part “Who Took the Super Out of Superman?” arc** implied strongly that Lois and Clark slept together.

If it's an anniversary, Superman's picking up a car

If it’s an anniversary, Superman’s picking up a car

Finally, for Superman’s 40th anniversary in 1978, Lois and Clark got married. You might say “oh, it was just on Earth-Two,” but in practical Multiverse terms that meant it involved the original couple from Action #1. Fittingly, it took place in the pages of June 1978′s Action Comics #484.*** Set in the early 1950s, the somewhat-unfortunately titled “Superman Takes a Wife” tells the tale of a year without Superman, when an old Justice Society villain called the Wizard magically caused the Man of Steel to forget his heroic identity. Consequently, Clark’s crimefighting bent manifested rather forcefully in his reportage — and with no Superman around, Clark the two-fisted newsman was free to woo Lois without reservation.

However, Lois soon learned the secret — by watching Clark shrug off machine-gun fire without even realizing someone was shooting at him — and decided that for the good of humanity, she had to step aside. Tracking down the Wizard and playing on his vanity, she convinced him to reverse the spell. Later, packing her things, she told Superman “[a]dmit it — you never would have married me if it weren’t for the Wizard.”

“You’re probably right!” he replied, perhaps demonstrating a lack of super-tact. “On the other hand, if it weren’t for the Wizard — I never would have had the chance to realize how much I’ve always loved you!” A brief Kryptonian ceremony then dissolved the Earth-Two triangle for good.

Still, the notion persisted that Superman couldn’t commit to Lois without abandoning his responsibilities. This was probably portrayed most famously in Superman II, when Clark gave up his powers in order to be with Lois, and then took away her memories of his identity to spare her their burden. That reads like a “modernized” version of some ‘50s-style Imaginary Tale, when the best of intentions produced horrible consequences, solved only by a few feats of super-paternalism. Regardless, the Superman lore of the ‘70s and ‘80s was built on the traditional eternal triangle, and particularly on “Clark Kent” being a role that Superman played. If the truth ever came out, Lois would look foolish for falling in love with an act, and Superman would be worse off the longer the act lasted.

Even so, Lois held her own. Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane lasted from 1958 through 1974 (137 issues and two annuals), and Lois’ solo adventures continued in Superman Family through its final issue in 1982. Lois herself was a fixture at the Daily Planet, although when Clark moved over to WGBS-TV she contributed to his newscast as well. Her skill at Klurkor, a Kryptonian martial art, made her more independent of Superman. Her adventures weren’t all winners (like November 1970′s awkward “I Am Curious (Black!)” in Lois Lane #106), but collectively they showed a woman trying to be something more than simply a plot device.

When the 1986 revamp changed Superman’s history, it also altered his relationship with Lois profoundly. By making “Superman” a persona which Clark assumed, instead of the other way around, Lois and Clark’s eventual romance was more grounded. They began dating in earnest around 1990 (I want to say around the time of “Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite”) and Clark told Lois the secret in Action #662 (February 1992). Indeed, as Clark’s partner, Lois proved to be exceptionally good at helping keep his secret safe. They got married in 1996**** and stayed together for the next fifteen years, until the New-52 reboot. However, although she helped “raise” Kara Zor-El and Lor-Zod when they each came to Earth, marriage didn’t turn Lois domestic. Over the course of a quarter-century, the post-Crisis On Infinite Earths Lois Lane remained an important part of the Superman books, both as a hard-nosed reporter and a potential romantic lead (and sometimes not with Superman). In fact, Lois became a major DC-Earth player generally, particularly in a couple of Wonder Woman stories.

Reunited in the 853rd Century

Lois soon came to represent Clark/Superman’s connection to the Earth, if not to humanity itself. A number of alternate-universe stories (including Kingdom Come and the current Injustice: Gods Among Us), as well as the nightmarish future of JLA’s “Rock of Ages,” use Lois’ death as a plot point to show dire effects on Superman. Conversely, the final scenes of the in-continuity far-future miniseries DC One Million have Lois revived by super-science and reunited with an immortal Superman who’s returned from millennia in exile; and an issue stranding Superman for an eternity with Wonder Woman (January 2000′s Action #761) did nothing to shake his devotion.

Although it makes Lois sound like all she does is help facilitate Superman’s characterization (a phrase which doesn’t quite do the idea justice), I think the role of “Superman’s anchor” — poor choice of words, I know — suits her well. Again, from the beginning Lois has personified Clark/Superman’s desire to fit in. To a certain extent, we measure our social success by the quality of friends we have, and the better Lois is as a person, the more plausible it is that Clark would at least want her respect. The danger is that Lois — even a hypercompetent Lois — becomes something of a merit badge for Superman, like an achievement he has to attain in order to satisfy a character goal. Therefore, the challenge is to present Lois and Clark’s relationship in as natural a fashion as possible, neither taking it for granted nor denying its importance.

And the relationship is important, because Siegel and Shuster considered it so. They projected onto Lois their own dreams, not of a super-woman who could match the Man of Tomorrow power for power, but of the ordinary relationships they themselves wanted. Today we consider Superman to be a paragon of human virtues, always doing the right thing regardless of the cost. If we turn that around slightly, it’s not hard to imagine that Superman considers Lois a shining example of humanity, and that’s why he loves her. Put another way, if conventional wisdom defines Superman at least in part by his relationships to regular people — including the Kents, the Planet staff and Lex Luthor — Lois must be one of the best “regular people” in his life.

So, as we pause to reflect on seventy-five years of Superman, we must also consider seventy-five years of Lois Lane. There have been as many Loises over the decades as there have been Supermen, whether on the radio, the big and small screens, on the stage, or in animation.  There have been good Lois stories and bad ones. Nevertheless, throughout it all Lois remains an inspiration — not just to readers, but to the professionals who chronicle her adventures, and indeed to Superman himself.  She is smart, tenacious, devoted, jaded (but not overly so), capable, and filled with righteous energy.  When you love someone you want to do your best for her.  I think it’s safe to say that after seventy-five years, a lot of us — human, Kryptonian, whatever — have come to love Lois Lane.

Android may include multiplayer gaming features in next update, suggests MyGlass app code

Snippets of code found in Google's new MyGlass app hint that the company may be working on background improvements to Android that would enhance multiplayer gaming on the platform. Findings and analysis by Android Police suggest that a future update to Android could include tools that allow game developers to easily implement multiplayer features including real-time and turn-based gameplay, in-game chat, achievements, leaderboards, and a way to invite others to play with you. Such tools could go a long way in improving multiplayer Android games and developer support, as developers would no longer have to spend time building a network for every new title.

Android Police discovered the code inside of the MyGlass app after it was released earlier this week. The MyGlass app enables turn-by-turn directions and SMS text messaging on the company's new headset, but Google appears to have included additional, unneeded code within the app that may reveal previously undocumented projects by the Android team. The feature could resemble Apple's Game Center for iOS, which handles matchmaking and multiplayer networking for game developers. Google's next version of Android is expected to be announced next month, though it's not yet known if these alleged gaming features will come along with it.
