On Wednesday, Brittney Griner, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft and one of the best female basketball players on the planet, came out of the closet, to the world at large anyway.

The world didn’t end. The sun rose again. And Griner’s career prospects are as bright as ever.

Now, imagine if the No. 1 pick in next week’s NFL draft announced he was gay. Imagine if a Super Bowl champion announced he’d be taking his male partner to Disney World. Apocalypse, right?

The man, Richard Godbehere, posted the clip in February under the title “Let’s Go Driving, Drinking!” to LiveLeak, a video-sharing site where users can vote on and donate to videos they like.

Even so, he appeared surprised when police showed up at his house in Kapa’a, Hawaii, to arrest him on charges of consuming alcohol while operating a vehicle and driving without a license.

“It’s unbelievable,” Godbehere told CNN. He says the video was meant as a parody. “There was no beer in that bottle.” Godbehere is due in court in June, and police in Kaua’i told CNN the case will come down to whether a judge or jury believes him.

When oversharing online can get you arrested - CNN.com

On one hand, yes, this dude is a fucking idiot.

On the other hand, what proof was there?

The Oregon idiot further down in the article who posted he was drunk when he hit a car got arrested because his car was damaged, and the missing parts matched parts found at the crime scene.

But this idiot? He’s right. Anything could be in the bottle.

He deserves about as much social hell for a long damn time for being such a shithead. Driving without a license alone is some dumbass shit. Promoting drunken driving deserves some sort of action, but it’s not the law he broke.

That’s some guilty-until-proven-innocent shit on the DUI.

Showtime announces final 'Dexter' season with two-minute sneak peak, premiere dated for June 30th

sneak peak x4

After seven seasons of highs and lows, Showtime's Dexter is finally coming to an end. The network just announced season eight's premiere on Sunday, June 30th and simultaneously confirmed that this would be the final season one of TV's favorite serial killers. Showtime announced the final season on its Dexter Facebook page to gives its fans the news first, and it also delivered a two-minute sneak peak — rather a standard trailer, the sneak peak is a tense and charged scene Dexter and his sister Deb some weeks after season seven's cliffhanger ending. While Dexter's quality certainly varied widely over the years, with seasons five and six being particularly disappointing, last year's outing was largely seen as a return to form and one of the series' better efforts — we're hoping that holds true again over the final episodes.

Facebook rolls out free voice calling for Android users in the US

by Ellis Hamburger

Mirroring its rollout of free VoIP calling for iOS, Facebook has updated its Messenger app for Android to allow free calling for users in the US. The free calling service launched for Canadian Android users in early March, so today's announcement greatly broadens the scope of the company's efforts to become the one way we all communicate digitally. In order to call a friend for free using Facebook Messenger, tap the "i" button inside a conversation and then select Free Call. You do not need to update the Messenger app to use the feature. If you're using Chat Heads to message friends, you'll need to tap the three "more info" dots next to a person's name to move the conversation to the Messenger app before you can make a call.

The social network says that as of today, 24 countries now have access to VoIP calling on Android. A Facebook engineer told us a few weeks ago that launching VoIP calling added up to "only a blip" on the company's servers, so a global rollout shouldn't be too far down the road. Considering the breakneck pace at which Facebook plans to update its new Home launcher for Android, it also shouldn't be long before making calls feels as integrated as messaging with Chat Heads.

Court sides with EA, 'edge' trademarks canceled by court order

(is it finally over?)

By Dave Tach on Apr 18, 2013 at 6:30p

A California District Court sided with Electronic Arts and has ordered the U.S. Department of Commerce Patent and Trademark Office to cancel a series of trademarks registered by Tim Langdell and Edge Games, Inc. covering the word "edge," according to legal documents filed online.

Langdell claimed in a series of lawsuits that the trademarks, which covered "The Edge," (patent 3,599,342) "Gamer's Edge," (3,381,826) "Edge" (3,105,816), "Cutting Edge" (2,251,584) and "Edge" (2,219,837) entitled him to injunctions and damages for trademark infringement by games like Electronic Arts Mirror's Edge, GamesIndustry.biz reported.

According to the legal documents online, EA filed its Consolidated Petition for Cancelation for the patents above on Sept. 11, 2009. A document filed yesterday, April 17, 2013, referring to Cancellation No. 92051465, confirms the cancelation of each patent by the Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office by order of the United States District Court of the Northern District of California, San Francisco Division.

Today, April 18, 2013, the court received a Letter of Protest from Langdell in his capacity as CEO of Edge Games objecting to the issuance of "a notice canceling" the trademarks.

To celebrate the ruling, Mobigame has discounted its puzzle game, Edge. Langdell also filed suit against the company for the game, which was temporarily removed from the iOS App Store in 2010.

"It took us two years to create Edge from scratch, then we waited four additional years for this day to happen," Mobigame's David Papazian wrote on Two Tribes' website. "This story represent six years of our lives but now the road is totally clear for Edge. We are so happy for all the victims of this trademark troll, truth and justice finally won! We feel that we have to celebrate this major event in some ways, and we hope all the good people we met along the road will celebrate with us."

You can purchase Edge on Steam, the Mac App Store, the iOS App Store and Google Play at a discount during the Edge Trademark Victory sale, which lasts until April 22.

Oklahoma Rep. Dennis Johnson Apologizes For Anti-Semitic Slur | TPM LiveWire

by russiansledges
Speaking in favor of legislation that would repeal Oklahoma's 70-year-old law that prohibits retailers from selling goods for less than 6 percent above cost, state Rep. Dennis Johnson (R), the co-majority leader of the state House of Representatives and a small business owner, said that some customers "might try to Jew me down on a price." Shortly after invoking the derogatory phrase, Johnson appeared to be notified by someone off camera that what he said was offensive.  "I apologize to the Jews," Johnson said, drawing laughter from the chamber. "They're good small businessmen as well."

CVS Employee Writes 'Ching Chong' on Korean Customer's Receipt

by Meher Ahmad

Just a quick reminder to all service workers: When you make a terrible name for one of your customers in the system, print out a receipt with said name, and hand the receipt to a customer, the customer WILL notice. You're not being sneaky. You won't punch out at the end of the day with a smirk on your face and tell your friends about the fun little prank you pulled at work over a beer later. Or maybe you will, but eventually, you will get caught. Because there's proof of your asshole-y-ness on the receipt, dipshit. In this case, the dipshit in question was a CVS employee who printed out a receipt for Hyun Lee, a New Jersey resident of Korean descent. She was picking up her photos from a local CVS and noticed that her name on the receipt, instead of appearing as "LEE, HYUN," read, "LEE, CHING CHONG."

"Curry was “hurt and humiliated” by the backstage antics at the Today show in her final..."

Curry was “hurt and humiliated” by the backstage antics at the Today show in her final months, which allegedly included executive producer Jim Bell making a blooper reel of her most egregious on-air errors, as well as a Photoshopped “Who Wore It Better” image of Curry in a bright yellow dress alongside Big Bird that was circulated among the control room staff. (Bell denies the first incident, according to Stelter.)

“Curry felt that the boys’ club atmosphere behind the scenes at Today undermined her from the start, and she told friends that her final months were a form of professional torture,” Stelter writes. “One staff person recalled that ‘a lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann’s outfit choices or just generally messing with her.’”

In Stelter’s telling, it was Bell who was gunning for Curry and christened the operation to remove her from the co-anchor chair “Operation Bambi” (after a TV veteran reportedly told him that firing the newly-minted Curry would be akin to “killing Bambi”).

Cool American Doritos

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Cool American Doritos

Made from fresh roasted maize.

While shopping at Kvosin (a small market) in Rekjavik, Iceland recently, I spotted a flavor of Doritos I had never heard of before: Cool American. Despite the name, they’re actually a Dutch product (available in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other points in Europe) and are really just Cool Ranch flavored, as they are better known in the States. Of course, that didn’t stop me from buying a bunch of bags to bring home for my cool American loved ones.

London Tweed Run 2013

by Kelly Miller

London’s 2013 Tweed Run took place last weekend, and the author/editor of this blog was on hand to participate both as a race marshal and a photographer- from the back of a tandem [ed. note: a great vantage point for capturing action shots!].  Described as “a metropolitan ride with a bit of style,” the Tweed Run began in London in 2009 as a charitable event uniting cycling- and tweed- enthusiasts, channeling that uniquely British ability to be both delightfully eccentric and incredibly dignified at once.  Though 2012′s “Tweed Police” squad stayed home this year, most attendees dutifully donned their best tweed-y looks and morale was high at this annual event, despite a spot or two of rain towards the end.  We’re already looking forward to next year…until then, enjoy this round-up of photos from 2013.

5 Restaurant Tips for Making Top-Notch Cocktails at Home

I have imbibed my fair share of drinks at trendy cocktail bars, and after a while, a gal starts to pick up a thing or two about making a top-notch cocktail. It's not always about fancy artisan spirits or the enthusiasm with which you shake that cocktail shaker. Just as often, it's the little things that make the difference — simple things that can take our own cocktails from good to restaurant-worthy.
