How did they get away with that

AH

I LOVE THIS

What do you mean how did they get away with it?

History isn’t one straight line progressing towards a liberal society.

Look how much Americans attitudes have changed between 1980 and today. 1980 was the first time most very religious people voted, they abstained before that at the behest of their churches. Now they dictate policy at every election.

In my family photo album there are pictures from the 20s of a woman called ‘uncle bob’. She dressed in men’s clothing, and had a ‘companion’. This was a rough industrial town, they were working class, nobody cared. It was her business.

This is why politics is important - the moment you think everything is better today than it was in the past, you let other people take control of the direction society goes in - with you sitting back presuming we’re going forwards.

reblogging for the commentary

There’s not enough love in the world. The sooner people stop stomping on it because it’s arrived in a shape they don’t recognize, the better.

Scientists Back Kiera Wilmot by Tweeting About All the Stuff They've Blown Up - Miami - News - Riptide 2.0

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

As the tale of Kiera Wilmot -- the Bartow, Florida student expelled and charged with two felonies over a science project gone wrong -- went viral yesterday, a wide movement to support the 16-year-old blossomed from blogs to radio shows to Change.org petitions. Best of all, though, has been a Twitter campaign by scientists and science fans with a simple premise: writing about the craziest stuff they've blown up over the years, all in the name of science.

The difference, of course, is that they were congratulated on their curiosity or slapped on the wrist, not hit with life-altering felonies.

See also:
- Florida School Responds to Criticism for Expelling Student Over Science Project: "There Are Consequences to Actions"
- Florida Teen Girl Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad

Wilmot was booted from school and criminally charged last week after mixing toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil in a plastic bottle on school grounds, despite the fact that no one was hurt and she told her principal she was conducting a "science fair experiment."

The details of the case have led to an outcry from science educators, particularly because Wilmot was apparently a good student with a good behavior record and because she's a young black woman -- a demographic severely underrepresented in the science world.

The campaign to support her may well have started with an eloquently furious blog from DNLee, a biologist who writes for Scientific American. She writes about the race aspects of Wilmot's case and then notes another important fact: Anyone with any scientific curiosity has had some experiments go wrong.

I can't name a single scientist or engineer, who hadn't blown up, ripped apart, disassembled something at home or otherwise cause a big ruckus at school all in the name of curiosity, myself included. Science is not a clean. It is very messy and it is riddled with mistakes and mishaps.

Andrew Thaler, a deep-sea biologist in North Carolina who writes as "Southern Fried Scientist," then challenged his Twitter followers to share tales of their own mishaps that went unpunished, with a #KieraWilmot tag.

What do you say, Miami? Ever blown anything up for science? Tell us about it in the comments or tweet @miaminewtimes with the tag #kierawilmot.

"Ms. Bellou, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Montreal, set out her findings..."

“Ms. Bellou, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Montreal, set out her findings in “The Impact of Internet Diffusion on Marriage Rates: Evidence from the Broadband Market,” a paper for the Institute for the Study of Labor in Bonn. She studied U.S. data from roughly 1990 to 2006 on the marital status of individuals between 21 and 30 years old from the Current Population Survey, along with Federal Communications Commission reports on the spread of broadband. She found marriage rates were slightly higher among college-educated individuals than those without college degrees. “In recent decades, we have observed important transformations in the marriage market,” Ms. Bellou said. For one thing, more young people are seeking marriage partners on the Internet, and relying less on family and friends for such introductions. The Internet’s effect on the marriage market could be just as transformative as its effect on matching employers and job-seekers, Ms. Ballou said, given “access to an expanding set of potential partners,” while preserving “a degree of anonymity” for the searcher. But those very characteristics also could undermine the strength of Internet-made matches. “If the Internet indeed makes meeting people easier at all times and ages then one might consider entering a marriage less thoughtfully to begin with,” she said. “This would imply more marriages and remarriages but also more divorces. If, on the other hand, the Internet allows matching between more compatible people, one would expect divorce rates to decrease. More research is required to disentangle these effects.””

Hand Crafted Into a Hipster in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

by Scott Beale

Hipster

New York Times writer Henry Alford shares his artisanal adventure of how he was hand crafted into a hipster in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

If every youth movement says as much about the status quo as it does about itself, then this new eco-conscious, agrarian-seeming, hair-celebrating nexus of locavorism is maybe telling us that the rest of us need to plunge our fingers into the rich loam of the earth, literally and metaphorically.

“NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A white Steinway grand piano salvaged from musician Fats Domino’s home after Hurricane Katrina has been restored and will be the centerpiece of an exhibit in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The piano was damaged after water poured through a broken levee during the August 2005 storm, flooding Domino’s home in the Lower 9th Ward. Its restoration came through $30,000 donated to the Louisiana Museum Foundation. The largest gift of $18,000 came from Allan Slaight, a retired music producer in Miami. Other donations came from Sir Paul McCartney, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Tipitina’s Foundation.”

Zachi Telesha, comics writer, passes away at age 12

TW: domestic abuse

Zachi-Telesha

When you know you don’t have a lot of time, you prioritize.

That’s what Zachi Telesha did. In August 2008, age 7, the Allentown, Pennsylvania, youth was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Telesha set himself a series of personal goals, and he died this week, at age 12, a published comics writer.

Telesha was a fifth-grader at McKinley Elementary School when the publisher Rodale, a corporate sponsor of the school, learned of his illness and his desire to write a comic. He spent five months working with Rodale staffers and teachers from his school to produce the graphic novel, Hero Up!, which features four superheroes — one of whom, Venom Transporter, was based on Telesha himself. “He can get bit by the most poisonous snake and spider at the same time repeatedly and still just get stronger,” Telesha explained in a YouTube video.

When the comic was complete, a run of 30 hardcover and 1,000 softcover editions was printed, and every Allentown public school library has a copy. There are rumors that Telesha was working on a sequel.

Cancer was not the only obstacle Telesha had to overcome: In 2009 his biological father beat his mother to death with a baseball bat. Telesha was in foster care and was adopted in 2011, and in the YouTube video, he focuses on the positive, the support he received from his family and friends. And like geeks everywhere, he liked to share his pleasures; he was instrumental in getting an XBox 360 donated to the hospital where he was treated, so the other pediatric cancer patients could enjoy it.

Beyond his work in comics, Telesha was an inspiration to his fellow students. A hallway at his school was named after him, and his fellow students wear “Z” T-shirts in his honor. A video made shortly before his death shows him clowning around with his IV port. “What he left us was more of a legacy than probably the richest man in Allentown,” said his science teacher, John Annoni.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Signal Ops

by Jessica Conditt

It's not that there are too many indie games; it's that there aren't enough hours in a day to play all of them. The Joystiq Indie Pitch curates the best indies to play now and watch out for in the future.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch Signal Ops What's your game called and what's it about?

Signal Ops has you assume the role of a handler, in charge of directing field agents on somewhat questionable missions. You do the bidding of one of the government's church divisions, seeking out traitors among other dirty work. As a seasoned officer, you stay back at base while the recruits go out and handle the dangerous bits. You won't be relaxing, though; these field operatives need constant supervision and someone to tell them what to do. It's a darkly comedic tale of clandestine operations, treachery, and doing what's wrong because it is right.

What's the coolest aspect of Signal Ops?

Just take a look! Signal Ops tasks the player with simultaneously controlling up to four agents from multiple first-person perspectives. Not only that, but they must also progress through missions strategically by seeking out power for your squad's radio, which is their lifeline to you. This coordination and tactics-first gameplay leads to tense and often challenging decisions on how to approach the many obstacles and puzzles that are thrown your way.

RMS Urges W3C To Reject On Principle DRM In HTML5

by timothy
gnujoshua writes "In a new article, GNU Project founder Richard M. Stallman speaks out against the proposal to include hooks for DRM in HTML5. While others have been making similar arguments, RMS strikes home the point that while companies can still push Web DRM themselves, the stance taken by the W3C is still — both practically and politically — vitally important: '[...] the W3C cannot prevent companies from grafting DRM onto HTML. They do this through nonfree plug-ins such as Flash, and with nonfree Javascript code, thus showing that we need control over the Javascript code we run and over the C code we run. However, where the W3C stands is tremendously important for the battle to eliminate DRM. On a practical level, standardizing DRM would make it more convenient, in a very shallow sense. This could influence people who think only of short-term convenience to think of DRM as acceptable, which could in turn encourage more sites to use DRM. On the political level, making room for DRM in the specifications of the World Wide Web would constitute an endorsement in principle of DRM by the W3C. Standardization by the W3C could facilitate DRM that is harder for users to break than DRM implemented in Javascript code. If the DRM is implemented in the operating system, this could result in distribution of works that can't be played at all on a free operating system such as GNU/Linux.'"
