The Caucus: Critic of Immigration Proposal Cited Lower I.Q. of Immigrants in Dissertation

by By ASHLEY PARKER and KITTY BENNETT
A co-author of a new Heritage Foundation study highly critical of the Senate’s bipartisan immigration proposal also wrote a doctoral dissertation in which he argued that immigrants generally have an I.Q. that is “substantially lower than that of the white native population.”

The World’s End, An Apocalyptic Comedy by Edgar Wright Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost

by Kimber Streams

The first trailer for The World’s End, an apocalyptic comedy created by Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, has just been released. The film completes “The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy,” following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The World’s End stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddie Marsan, and will hit theaters on August 23rd, 2013.

In The World’s End, 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

Chicago-based Arrfscarf has made a line of gourmet ice cream for dogs using fresh, organic, and preservative free ingredients in five meat-filled flavors: Peanut Butter Bacon, Chicken Cheddar, Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Gouda Burger. The ice cream is currently available to buy in two Chicago stores and online.

We wanted our pup to experience ice cream. We wanted it to be healthy, nutritious, and fresh. We set out to create the best dog ice cream. It all begins with yogurt, vanilla, and honey. Those three ingredients are the simple base. The magic happens when we pair our ice cream base with one of our flavor creations. Now, we are on a mission to share our amazing creation with all the pups in the world.

The 10 Most Exciting Cities in America

firehose

I can see Portland west of 82nd being in the top 3 or 4 of each of those categories except population diversity; it's Portland east of 82nd that's the polar opposite in every category.
Portland's not helped by how most of its population diversity is Caucasian ethnic diversity rather than non-white races. (80% of Portland is white, but eastern European- and Middle Eastern-born, ESL whites make up about 15% of the entire SE, 20% of the population along SE Powell west of 82nd, and more the 30% of the population along 52nd in the southeast.)

The 10 Most Exciting Cities in America:
  1. Oakland, CA
  2. Boston, MA
  3. San Francisco, CA
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. Washington, D.C.
  6. New York, NY
  7. Milwaukee, WI
  8. Atlanta, GA
  9. Philadelphia, PA
  10. Portland, OR

These are the 10 criteria we surveyed:

  • Park acreage per person (#1: Virginia Beach)
  • Percent of population between 20 and 34 years old (#1: Columbus, OH)
  • Fast food restaurants per square mile (the fewer the better) (#1: El Paso, TX)
  • Bars per square mile (#1: San Francisco, CA)
  • Big box stores per square mile (the fewer the better) (#1: Tie, Detroit and Boston, both with 0)
  • Population diversity (#1: Oakland, CA)
  • Movie theaters per square mile (#1: Oakland, CA)
  • Museums per square mile (#1: Oakland, CA)
  • Theater companies per square mile (#1: Oakland, CA)
  • Music venues per square mile (#1: San Francisco, CA)

'Star Trek Into Darkness' Heading Where None Has Gone Before: Foreign Profitability

'Star Trek Into Darkness' Heading Where None Has Gone Before: Foreign Profitability:

“We did a lot of focus groups in a lot of countries, and asked what they liked and didn’t like and we listened,” Marcoly said. “Basically, it was more action, more of the adventure elements and less of the real Trekkie stuff.” The stuff, in other words, that turned the 1960s TV show into a cultural phenomenon in America and launched the film franchise. Paramount didn’t have much choice. With a $195 million production budget, Abrams’ follow-up to his 2009 “Star Trek” reboot will have to score big overseas to be a success. And that’s a feat none of the previous films – including the last one – have been able to achieve.

The Princess Can Save Herself, Thank You

by Glenn Fleishman

The Princess Who Saved Herself [MP3]

The "Code Monkey Saves World" project is about to stretch itself into the world of kickass princesses. Troubadour Jonathan Coulton and filmmaker and comics writer Greg Pak teamed up a few weeks ago to launch a crowdfunding effort to raise $39,000 to create a series of comic books based on the villains and other characters from Coulton's songs. On their way to blow past $200,000 in pledges, the dynamic duo added more pages to the future comics, promised JoCo would record an album of newly recorded acoustic versions of the songs referenced in the comics, and provided other rewards, most of which existing backers get added without having to increase their pledge.

Pak and Coulton have at least one more rabbit to pull out of their jointly worn hat: a children's book created from "The Princess Who Saved Herself," the title of which explains the song.

Illustration: Takeshi Miyazawa and Jessica Kholinne

"If ever a song wanted to be adapted into a children's book, this is it," Pak said in an interview. If the project hits $250,000, the book will be created after the "Code Monkey" comics are done, and fulfilled digitally. Existing backers at $15 or higher will get the "Princess" book as well. There's no plan (yet) for a printed version of the book.

The story is along the lines of Brave rather than, say, The Little Mermaid film. Pak pointed to little girls who may play at princesses today, as that's encoded in the culture and beyond, but wear ripped jeans under the ball gown and don't need someone else to guide their adventure and control the outcome.

It's a neat model they are following as goals keep being exceeded. Some Kickstarters have been criticized because they mostly pay the creator for his or her time; why that's a problem, I'm not sure, because people who make things deserve to be paid, and crowdfunding is a voluntary operation. As far as I know, Kickstarter does not send goons to homes to threaten people into providing valid credit-card information for stuff they don't like.

But for projects that start to grow extremely large, seeing additional creative efforts included from the new funds certainly makes them more appealing to those that haven't contributed. Pak said that he and Coulton have wanted to layer on more elements to each reward level as the pool of money has increased, which also means being able to pay all of their collaborators for more work. "Because people have supported it, because so many people have come on board, the whole thing can get better," said Pak. The rising tide of funds float everyone's boats. This includes working with the team creating the "Code Monkey" comics: Takeshi Miyazawa, Jessica Kholinne, and Simon Bowland.

After quickly passing their initial goal, Pak said that he is a state of constant amazement. Though he knows that his and Coulton's work has been well received and that fans have supported their projects directly in many ways in the past, the intensity and scale of response has been a "huge amount of fun."

India Rolls Out Central Monitoring System To Snoop On All Communications

by Unknown Lamer
hypnosec tipped us to news that India is rolling out a new intrusive monitoring system, using the authority of a 2000 telecom law. Quoting The Times of India: "However, Pavan Duggal, a Supreme Court advocate specialising in cyberlaw, said the government has given itself unprecedented powers to monitor private Internet records of citizens. 'This system is capable of abuse,' he said. The Central Monitoring System, being set up by the Centre for Development of Telematics, plugs into telecom gear and gives central and state investigative agencies a single point of access to call records, text messages, and emails as well as the geographical location of individuals." Privacy advocates are worried about abuse, partially because India has no effective privacy legislation, and the "...Indian government under PM Manmohan Singh has taken an increasingly uncompromising stance when it comes to online freedoms, with the stated aim usually to preserve social order and national security or fight 'harmful' defamation."

Stephen Hawking reaffirms support of Israel boycott - Jerusalem Post

firehose

'Cambridge University initially confirmed a statement issued by British Committee for the Universities of Palestine saying that Professor Hawking had decided to "respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts".

But it was later retracted by a university spokesman, who said the professor had not confirmed the statement, and that ill health was behind the decision.

"Professor Hawking will not be attending the conference in Israel in June for health reasons. His doctors have advised against him flying," Reuters reported the spokesman writing in an email.

Professor Hawking, 71, who is wheelchair bound, had been fiercely criticised following initial reports that he was boycotting the event. A spate of abusive messages on Facebook mocked his physical disability.'

New submitter giveen1 writes "I recieved this email as a former Demonoid.me user. I tried to go to the website and link is dead. ... 'Dear Demonoid Community Member, We have all read the same news stories: The Demonoid servers shut down and seized in the Ukraine. The Demonoid admin team detained in Mexico. The demonoid.me domain snatched and put up for sale. The Demonoid trackers back online in Hong Kong, but then disappearing. ... Now for some good news: The heart and soul of Demonoid lives on! Through an amazing sequence of unlikely events, the data on those Ukrainian servers has made its way into the safe hands of members of our community and has now been re-launched as d2.vu.'" But it turns out that the site was distributing malware, hosted on an American VPS, and quickly shut down after the provider discovered this. No word yet on how the Demonoid user database was acquired, but if you did make the mistake of trying to log in Torrent Freak warns: "New information just in suggests that if you logged into the fake Demonoid and used the same user/password combo on any other site (torrent, email, Steam, PayPal) you should change them immediately."

Warren Spector speaks out against new Wolfenstein, 'generically dark' FPS games

by Megan Farokhmanesh
firehose

"Please stop using Jimi Hendrix to promote your adolescent male power fantasies."

"All I was saying was that I'm personally sick of shooters."

"If we're going to reach a new audience, we have to stop making games for teenage boys, or even teenage girls."

OR EVEN

By Megan Farokhmanesh on May 07, 2013 at 10:00p

Epic Mickey and Deus Ex developer Warren Spector gave the newly revealed Wolfenstein: The New Order a verbal lashing today, asking if the world "really needed another Wolfenstein game," via Facebook.

Spector continued to ask if another "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game," was necessary, adding that he is "so tired of stuff like this."

Wolfenstein: The New Order was announced earlier today by Bethesda Softworks. The game is a "reimagining" of the franchise and will take place in an alternate, 1960s universe. Spector also commented on the game's release trailer, which features Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower."

"Oh, and could we all just agree we'll never use the generic gravelly-whisper trailer voice guy ever again," Spector continued. "And one more thing: Please stop using Jimi Hendrix to promote your adolescent male power fantasies."

Further clarifying his post in a later comment on Facebook, Spector added that he is not "holding up the new Wolfenstein as emblematic of everything I think is wrong with the games industry."

"All I was saying was that I'm personally sick of shooters," Spector wrote. "I'm sick of a particular look and tone. I'm very sick of a particular trailer narration style. And I AM worried about the state of the core game business.

"Anyone want to deny it's a shooter? Anyone want to deny it's using a monochromatic color palette? Anyone want to defend the 'in a world where...' narration? Does anyone look at the state of the industry and, leaving indie stuff aside, the major publishers are pushing much besides shooters, sports and action-rpgs? Anyone want to say the core games business is doing just fine right now?"

"All I was saying was that I'm personally sick of shooters."

Spector ended with saying that he's sure the team is committed to the project, and he hopes there's "more to it" than the trailer and announcement have let on.

During this year's DICE Summit, Spector aimed negative comments at Grasshopper Manufacture's Lollipop Chainsaw, saying that "there are some games that should just not be made."

"I want content that is relevant to my life, set in the real world," Spector said at the time. "If we're going to reach a new audience, we have to stop making games for teenage boys, or even teenage girls."

We have reached out to Bethesda for comment and will update accordingly. Wolfenstein: The New Order is currently being developed for Windows PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and next-gen consoles.
