Animal Crossing: New Slang I finally cleared up my 3DS’s...

by ericisawesome

Animal Crossing: New Slang

I finally cleared up my 3DS’s R-button issues with a simple fix, so I can take in-game screenshots with Animal Crossing: New Leaf now!

My neighbors have grilled me with questions about how people talk on “the streets,” and have been quick to absorb my foreign vernacular. Unfortunately “What’s poppin’ slime” didn’t fit the character limits for Penelope’s greeting, but I was able to suggest “Booty Secrets” when Hugh asked me for a covert phrase we could use when trading gossip.

Pretty sure this isn’t what Nintendo had in mind when they provided reviewers with an early copy of the game.

World of Warcraft subscribers drop by 1.3 million in three months

"it would be like the Governor of New Hampshire decreeing that every citizen must cease playing World of Warcraft - that is, if every citizen of New Hampshire plays World of Warcraft. Which they do."

World of Warcraft's subscriber base is down to 8.3 million as of March 31, representing a 14 percent drop in the past three months. In the previous-quarter financials, Activision-Blizzard said the MMO had 9.6 million subscribers, but 1.3 million have since said so long to Azeroth.

"Though the majority of our subscriber decline occurred mainly in the East, where we have more subscribers and lower revenue per subscriber, we saw declines in the West as well," Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a financials call.

"While we do believe further declines are likely and we expect to have fewer subscribers at year-end than we do today, World of Warcraft remains one of the most successful franchises in the history of entertainment," he added.

To put the plummet into perspective, it would be like the Governor of New Hampshire decreeing that every citizen must cease playing World of Warcraft - that is, if every citizen of New Hampshire plays World of Warcraft. Which they do.

Advocate owner says he ‘tried to buy’ Times-Picayune | Poynter.

1. Whoa shit, John Georges bought the fuckin' Advocate!
2. Whoa shit, John Georges is going to war with the Times-Pic!
3. "He has hired Peter Kovacs as the paper's new editor and Dan Shea as general manager/COO. Kovacs and Shea were managing editors at The Times-Picayune until last year"
This is some fascinating shit. Culturally, someone with Georges' political and cultural ties to New Orleans (the only districts he carried in his gubernatorial run were New Orleans') buying Baton Rouge's newspaper is rather like the NY Times buying the Boston Globe. Then swooping in and replacing the Advocate's long-time (and successful, and largely better-than-industry-average) management and editorial staffs for former T-Pers is like the Globe subsequently being _run_ by New York Times staff (and Shea, as COO, _isn't even moving to Baton Rouge_, so it's like if the Globe was being run _out of New York_).
And THEN, outright saying the Advocate is going to be the T-P's daily competitor rather than picking up the T-P's slack is like saying the Globe would shift the focus of its coverage from Boston to New York.
And _THEN_ saying he tried to _buy_ the T-P as well as the Advocate is like if the New York Times then tried to buy the Wall Street Journal.

Like, there are Advocate employees pulling clumps of hair out that they forgot to pull out over the last 20 years. They're growing new hair to pull out.

What's next, LSU moving to New Orleans?

Advocate owner says he ‘tried to buy’ Times-Picayune | Poynter.:

In a May 2 interview, WWL-TV anchor Melanie Hebert passed on a viewer question to John Georges, The Advocate’s new owner: Would he be interested in buying the Times-Picayune: “You can’t buy something that there’s not a willing seller,” Georges replied.

I tried to buy them. I sent word to them before the Advocate or during the Advocate and they weren’t interested in selling.

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing [PlatinumFungi] about this fantastic NES mod he did. This year is the 25th anniversary of the first Mega Man video game. Unhappy with the current celebratory actions of capcom, [PlatinumFungi] set out to create something he felt was worthy. He managed to pull that off pretty well.

The NES you can see in the video is fantastic looking. It has a beautiful shiny automotive finish, supplied by [Custom NES Guy] and a pixel perfect backlit Mega Man on top. Additional enhancements are stylized decals on the front of the game bay and matching labels on the sides and back. The cartridge is even illuminated while it is in place.

Check out some pictures after the break!

The Tumblr blog merchandising is forever displays photos and animated GIFs documenting the deterioration of vintage Kenner Star Wars action figures over time. You can view their complete lists of Star Wars figures, playsets, vehicles and creatures online.

Starting in 1978 the toy company Kenner produced the first line of Star Wars toys. They are in my opinion unparalleled in design and execution. Playsets, vehicles, and action figures from this line are featured here as high-resolution scans, photographs and animations.

Although these toys were mass-produced, each one has gained a unique identity throughout the years. Some were played with, some were forgotten in attics, some are completely unrecognizable, and some are still mint.

Former Assassin's Creed and THQ Montreal producer Jean-François Boivin fired by Ubisoft, says Patrice Desilets

By Michael McWhertor on May 08, 2013 at 1:39p

Former Assassin's Creed creative director Patrice Desilets wasn't the only Ubisoft Montreal employee let go from the studio this week. According to Desilets, Assassin's Creed producer and former THQ Montreal colleague Jean-François Boivin has also been fired by Ubisoft.

"Thinking of my good friend and producer [Jean-François Boivin] who also got fired yesterday," Desilets tweeted today. "I'm sharing your support with him..."

Boivin joined Ubisoft in 2005 as a project manager and eventually assumed the roles of production manager and associate producer on Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Boivin left Ubisoft in 2010 and joined Desilets at THQ Montreal to oversee the fledgling studio's "new AAA IP," according to his LinkedIn profile.

Ubisoft confirmed to Polygon on Tuesday that Desilets was no longer with Ubisoft Montreal, which he rejoined after THQ's bankruptcy and Ubisoft's acquisition of certain THQ assets. "Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice's and the studio's visions have been inconclusive," read a statement from Ubisoft. "As a result, Patrice has left the studio."

Desilets contested his departure from Ubisoft Montreal in a follow-up statement, saying his leaving the studio "was not my decision."

"Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit," Desilets told Polygon. "I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game."

Polygon has reached out to Boivin and Ubisoft seeking comment.

Lionel Gallat Explains Ghost Of A Tale

by Jim Rossignol
firehose

27,717€ of 45,000€ goal

By Jim Rossignol on May 8th, 2013 at 7:00 pm.

Thanks to an unexpected extension by hosts IndieGoGo, the marvelous-looking Ghost Of A Tale gets another week to hit the all-or-nothing fundraising target. It’s one of those strange little projects that can come only from a talented individual with a very personal vision, and I have to declare that I really would like to see it get made. I talked to Lionel Gallat, who has quit the mainstream film industry to submerge himself in solo game dev, about this beautifully animated experiment.

RPS: Hello! I suspect a lot of people will be familiar with your work, even if they don’t know who you are. Can you explain who you are and how you came to be working on A Ghost Of A Tale?

Gallat: Hello, my name is Lionel Gallat, and I have a website called SeithCG, where I put everything I usually do outside of work, normally art and animation. I started as an animator at Dreamworks about fifteen years ago, and worked on several movies. Several years ago I moved back to France to work on a movie called Despicable Me, which was by Universal, but made outside the Hollywood system. They wanted to make it in France, and they wanted an animation director. So I did that, and then The Lorax after that. When that last movie was done, I began working on Ghost Of A Tale. And I realised I had to get serious about working on that full time if I wanted it to be real. I was working with another 3D engine, but then I moved on at the end of last year and I’ve been using Unity. I am very happy about that.

RPS: But why games? It seems like a strange side-step from where you were.

Gallat: I understand that from the outside it looks maybe a little bit strange, because it is not directly related, but I love games. I just love them, and since I was a kid I played games. For me it was natural in the sense that even when I was working on movies, I was always working with tools, programming, helping with the pipeline of the movie. It was kind of unofficial, I suppose. I am not a programmer, I am on the artistic side of things, but I really like programming. And so it comes naturally for me to put the two things together and make games. Before I only developed assets – models, textures and so on – but there was an opportunity to put these things together and then interact with the characters you have crated. This is something you cannot do in a move, obviously. When you work on a move everything is for one shot, one sequence. It was just really exciting to make that leap to interactive things.

RPS: Unity seems popular. But you are a professional animator and character designer by trade, so what tools do you use to make this game? Does that background change things?

Gallat: I use Maya for everything in animation and characters, and I also use Zbrush on the characters, when detailing is really important. And then, yes, I work with Unity. It is very simple to send the model from Maya to Unity. And that’s about it.

RPS: Let’s talk in a bit more detail about the game. What sort of game is it going to be, and what can we expect from it?

Gallat: You play as a little mouse. This mouse gets to an island and this island is populated by undead rats. Something has happened on the island that is not normal. You came to the island for a reason, though, and you have a quest, which is to get to the tower of Periclave, which is the name of the island itself. That’s the underlying struggle. When you get to the island you start to discover what had happened there, and why it happened. I think it will not be too much of a spoiler if I say you are going to meet a ghost. You are going to help him, somehow. It’s really about exploration, about discovering things, and it is not at all focused on combat. In the alpha trailer there is a moment where you get some kind of a weapon and start whacking at the rats, and that was fun to do, but it does not reflect the gameplay that I have in mind. It is about stealth. The mouse is not powerful at all, and it is engaged in a very dangerous adventure, it is perilous, and so it is really a game about exploiting this fact, not about fighting through enemies that are twice your size.

RPS: What’s the sort of shape of it? You said it is not a “Skyrim” but it is still about exploration and also a story? So is it sort of a “wide corridor” model?

Gallat: Yes, that is it. It is not entirely a sandbox game, you know. It really is about the story, and it is about you playing as the mouse. You are not choosing to be a great warrior or a wizard, you are playing as this character. It is linear, and there is a linear progression, but I hope it will not feel like a corridor, but it is about discovery and telling a story by exploring the island.

RPS: Scope is limited by manpower, of course. And it’s just you?

Gallat: Yes, I am doing everything at the moment. And that is a lot of hard work, but it is also a lot of fun to do. I am really enjoying working on this stuff! So far I am the only person on the game. But if I can get a budget – I have a campaign on IndieGoGo – then I would like to get some people to help me with the game.

RPS: What sort of stage is the game at now?

Gallat: Very early. I called the footage for the trailer “pre-alpha” or something like that. It is at the very earliest stages, and I was really only just able to put this stuff together to give an idea of how it might work. It’s not CG stuff, of course, that really is gameplay, but I am developing it at the early stages – writing the story, developing gameplay mechanics that I like and that I have not seen before. But it is still at a point where it is growing and I am exploring.

RPS: Can you talk about those gameplay mechanic ideas at all?

Gallat: Well there will be puzzles in the sense that you need to find your way through the island. There will be some mechanics and mechanisms which involve discovering things that are not of use at first sight, but when you look, really look, you find out their purpose. There is also going to be a good deal of stealth, and avoiding of confronting enemies directly, because that is not going to work. Indirect methods of confronting enemies will be important. We will have quests and objectives of course, but I think of it more like an adventure than like a Dark Souls or something.

RPS: What would a successful IndieGoGo campaign mean for you?

Gallat: I talk about this on the page of course, but there are a few things. It would mean updating my gear, which is getting pretty old! It’s about licenses for software, which are expensive things to purchase, and it’s about paying for the music. The music composed for the trailer was excellent, and I should love for that composer to be able to do the music for the game. Then there’s creating the website for the community – I don’t have time to do that! But I would like collaboration. People to help me regarding the story. People with some more experience developing games, and other artists who have proposed to work on the game – I really want to be able to pay them.

RPS: Does the games industry seem less forbidding to access now than perhaps it did a few years ago? Is that down to the ease of use and availability of tools?

Gallat: Absolutely. You really put your finger on it. It is different now because I can attempt this, even though I am not a professional programmer. I cannot program in C++ for example. But tools like Unity make it possible to make games for people like me, who have some background in technical and programming stuff, but who are not professionals. What I am able to do today I could not do a few years ago. This stuff has changed. The skills and tools you need to develop a videogame are similar in some ways to the skills and tools you need to develop a movie, so from my point of view as an artist who is cranking out assets, there is very little real difference in terms of the kind of work I an undertaking, because I am using many of the same tools. It would be very different, of course, if I was trying to do something 2D, or something conceptually very abstract, but here the tools and the goals are very similar. Unity is notoriously simple to develop for, and while I am being honest here I first tried using a different engine, and I could not. I could make no progress because I was not an experienced programmer. Which I thought was normal! Not a programmer? Well, you can’t do that. It’s always been like that. It’s out of reach. Then when I switched to Unity I was able to do the gameplay stuff you seen in the trailer in just a couple of months, from scratch in the C# language that Unity uses. I had to try very hard of course, but I could do it. I will do it.

RPS: Thanks for your time.

How to draw sexy without being sexist

by Chris Arrant

Psylocke-Final-620x374Last month on our sister blog Comics Should Be Good, columnist Kelly Thompson wrote a piece titled “6 Sublime Superheroine Redesigns” that profiled several recent costume makeovers she thought effective and true to the characters. In the post and the ensuing comments, talk abounded about the subject of superheroines often being saddled with revealing costumes that lean more toward fan service than suitable crime-fighting gear. Some posters argued there’s a current trend toward female characters having less-revealing costumes than in the past — Psylocke’s recent wardrobe redesign by Kris Anka was cited as an example — and that it’s an overreaction by publishers and designers that panders to feminists.

Anka took umbrage with some of the comments, and it opened the floor to an interesting debate about the look of superheroes. On the surface it questions the near-universal portrayal of female superheroes in more sexualized garb, but also attempts to draw a line between drawing a superhero as sexy without necessarily being sexist.

“A character can still be considered “sexy” even if it doesn’t fit with your tastes,” Anka posted on his blog. ” To say that by giving a female character a piece of fabric to cover her ass cheeks up is ruining her sexiness, ALL that means is that YOU think that an exposed ass is sexy. There is absolutely no way to make a blanket statement about that. Some people think a baggy shirt on a girl is equally as attractive as an uber skin tight shirt.”

From Anka’s perspective, his approach to designing a new costume for a superhero never has sexiness as a factor.

“Sex appeal ONLY comes into play when the characters PERSONALITY dictates that as a factor,” says Anka. “The CHARACTER must be first and foremost the inspiration and guideline for all the decisions made when trying to design the clothing.”

Anka’s redesign of Psylocke in X-Force dispenses with the revealing swimsuit garb the character has worn since 1989 in favor of a more practical suit that, while still skintight, is less a bikini and more a form-fitting catsuit. Although Psylocke’s pre-1989 look was more demure than the Lee design, some commenters took issue with the change and how it is out of nature for the character. But Anka disagrees, saying his decision was character-specific and offers a counter-point where showing skin is part of a character’s personality.

“My go-to example of a character that should be showing skin is, of course, Emma Frost,” Anka points out. “Here is a character who prides herself on her looks. She is an incredibly confident character mentally, and likes to show off herself physically. Emma Frost flaunting it works because it works for HER. She likes control, she likes power, and one of the best tools for that is her body. She can turn heads with her body, she can command attention with it. She wouldn’t even need to use her telepathy to have someone lose focus. Emma Frost is incredibly intelligent, she knows what she is doing. There has to be a REASON for the skin.”

Anka goes on to reference male superheroes like Colossus and Namor, whose costumes are relatively skimpy, and how that works for the characters and their personalities. Anka’s complete essay is a great read, and well worth checking out on its own.
