firehoseLamere is a high school senior from Nashua, New Hampshire, who likes building robots, hiking, and entering "hackathon" competitions. At her all-girls school, the Academy of Notre Dame in Massachusetts, she's the only student participating in these sorts of events.
Eliot Van Buskirk, an attendee from Evolver.fm, confirms that "the only other females in attendance, that I saw anyway, were an organizer, two camerawomen, a caterer, three judges, and a participant's wife."
She beat out professional developers sent by the event's sponsors, including ESPN, the Echo Nest, and Klout.
She's attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall, intending to major in software engineering. She hopes to some day work for Google.

Ubuntu Developing Its Own Package Format, Installer
firehose"The new package format has promised highlights of having no dependencies between applications, each package would install to its own directory, root support wouldn't always be required, and overall a more self-contained and easier approach for developers than it stands now for Debian/Ubuntu packages."
so it's OS X
"The primary users of the new packaging system would be those distributing applications built on the Ubuntu Touch/Phone SDK."

Disney Interactive down $54 million in Q2
By the end of the second quarter of its fiscal year, Disney Interactive was once again the media conglomerate's only unprofitable sector, reporting a $54 million operating income (read: pre-tax) loss for the three month period ending March 31, 2013. This is, however, a 22 percent year-over-year improvement when compared to Q2 2012's reported operating income loss of $70 million.Disney contributes the loss to "growth at our Japan mobile business from a licensing agreement that started in February 2012 and lower acquisition accounting expense at our social games business." No mention is made of Junction Point Studios, which Disney closed in January after lackluster sales of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, or of the company's forthcoming game/toy platform Disney Infinity.

As part of the 2011 Art on Track festival, Joe Baldwin and noisivelvet temporarily transformed a Chicago Transit Authority railway car into an awesomely lush and verdant garden.
“With native plants covering the seats, windows and floors of the subway car, the mobile garden brought a welcome splash of colour to the urban transit system. The rail transport oddity ran for five hours around Chicago’s downtown loop. Meanwhile, Joe Baldwin, a UIC Art and Design graduate, continued to seek funding for his open-air public transit garden.”

MLB 2K12 whistleblower wins $25,000 in 2K13 tournament

By Dave Tach on May 08, 2013 at 6:00p
Scott Young, one of 30 winners of this year's MLB 2K13 Perfect Game Challenge, is also the player who brought attention last year to an exploit that has since been removed from the revamped tournament, Kotaku reports.
Last year, Young came in 10th place in the $1 Million Perfect Game Challenge. Young told Kotaku last year that another contestant, William Haff, substituted the opposing team's best hitters to secure his place in last year's tournament.
Pitching for the Chicago White Sox this year, Young threw a perfect game and earned a score of 781 and a real-life award of $25,000. Haff also won $25,000 this year, throwing the highest scored perfect game for the Cincinnati Reds.
To secure his place in the tournament, which began April 1 with rule changes and focused on the best pitched game for each MLB team, Young played when he got home from work. His girlfriend, who he told Kotaku was "so cool about this," would often watch his daughter as he pitched for perfection.
"With about two weeks left, I really thought about quitting," he said. "She said, 'You know what, take the day off, settle down, and see how you feel."
The night of her pep talk, Young threw his perfect game.
"I feel bad for him, because I know he would be much happier if he could just come out."

DC Comics reintroduces Cheshire (again)
In today’s installment of “What’s New in the New 52,” DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras introduces readers to Cheshire, teased as a character from Jason Todd’s past who’ll soon appear in Red Hood and the Outlaws “to shed a little bit more light” on the character’s origins. However, unveiling of the character design created a little confusion in the comments section, as Cheshire has already been introduced to the New 52.
Created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, Cheshire debuted in 1982′s New Teen Titans Annual #2 as a mercenary who frequently the team, but she eventually fell in love with Roy Harper, and the two had a child. Over the years, she was affiliated with the Secret Six and Deathstroke’s Titans, but that was all before DC’s 2011 relaunch.
Skip ahead to the May 2012 solicitations for Grifter #9, which teased the first appearances in the New 52 of Deathblow and Cheshire. And she did appear, too — apparently in numerous issues — although she was only ever referred to in the stories as Niko.
So either there are two Cheshires leaping around the DC Universe, or the now-canceled Grifter has been the subject of the one of the New 52′s first retcons.

How Neil Gaiman did away with the "clanky clanky steampunk" Cybermen
firehosetl;dr: He wrote silent, better Cybermen inspired by Troughton's, then Moffat overruled him
When he was a child, Patrick Troughton was his favorite Doctor, and he particularly remembered the second Cyberman episode, “The Moonbase” — how quiet and sneaky the Cybermen were. “I was terrified of them, much more scared of them than I was of the Daleks, because they were quiet, and they slipped in and out of rooms.”
So even though Gaiman liked the look of the “clanky clanky steampunk Cybermen,” he knew their time was over, and it would be fun to make them more scary.
In fact, in Gaiman’s original script, you never hear the Cybermen at all, except when they thump their chests — but the production team changed it, and the Cybermen actually do make a fair amount of noise in the aired version of Gaiman’s episode. But still, he feels as though he’s made them a much more menacing monster again, so that the next time they appear, people will be much more perturbed.
