Madden 25 will let you move to 17 different cities, revive historic teams

Madden 25 will let you move teams to 17 different cities

In Madden 25's Connected Franchise career mode, players can take on the role of team owner and perform a number of new tasks, including relocating teams to new cities. Madden's Creative Director Mike Young told Joystiq today that the mode is designed to limit the franchise relocation option to 17 different markets. The 17 cities include Brooklyn, London, Dublin, Toronto, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Austin, Columbus, Orlando, Portland, Oklahoma City and Memphis.

Additionally, some locations with an already-established NFL presence can receive a second team, such as Chicago and Houston. Players will have the option to retain their team name, logo and uniforms when moving or select from three different preset options for each city, including the Brooklyn Beats. The mode also grants players the option to reboot now-defunct teams from the NFL's history, such as the Columbus Panhandles, London Monarchs or the Houston Oilers. Players can opt to turn off the team relocation feature, disabling the option entirely.

EA Sports provided us with a new trailer for the game in which Young discusses the move from Madden 13's Connected Careers mode to this year's Connected Franchise mode. Madden 25 will launch August 27 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

MariaDB vs. MySQL: A Performance Comparison

by Unknown Lamer
Nerval's Lobster writes "MariaDB is a fork of the MySQL source code, split off in the wake of concerns over what Oracle would do with MySQL licensing. In addition to its role as a 'drop-in replacement' for MySQL, MariaDB also includes some new features that (some claim) make it better than MySQL. Jeff Cogswell compares MySQL and MariaDB and suggests (in his opinion) that there's 'more than enough reason to ditch MySQL and switch over to MariaDB and stay there.' Why? While he breaks down MariaDB's new features and thinks many of them aren't that fantastic, and while MariaDB's performance isn't that much better than that of MySQL ('MariaDB's performance appears a bit better on multi-core machines, but I strongly suspect that one could tweak MySQL to match'), the questions over Oracle and MySQL licensing give him pause. 'MariaDB shows every indication that it will be around for quite awhile, while you can't really say the same of Oracle's MySQL,' he writes. 'Free-and-open MySQL competes with Oracle's proprietary and extremely competitive tools. That alone is grounds for concern — will Oracle do something to impede MySQL's development?'"

Last year I featured a number of amazing gifs from Istanbul-based artist Erdal Inci (previously) who clones sections of video to create hypnotic animated loops. His work has since popped up all over the web and will soon find its way into a gallery space. Above are some of his latest clips depicting numerous copies of Inci himself parading through the frame like a cloned robot army, though he also flashlights to create even more complex effects. If you happen to be in Italy you can catch his work firsthand at Action Gallery in Milano on May 25 and in Naples on May 30.

Who Should Be the New Voice of 'This Is NPR'?

by Connor Simpson
firehose

npr beat

rachel shared this story from The Atlantic Wire:
Benedict Cumberbatch, please.

Your favorite public broadcasting network, NPR, is looking for someone to record their "this... is NPR" voiceover show closers, "support for this program comes from..." ramblings, and more. You could be that person! Although, come to think of it, the following people have voices made of gold and silver and other precious things, so they might deserve the job. Because, really, you don't really want the job anyway. Hearing yourself after Ira Glass or Terry Gross might send you into a state of anxious paralysis. So it's best to leave it up to these pros who have become renowned for their vocal beauty.

Morgan Freeman

Morgan Freeman is literally the voice of God. He's been recruited by the president, and more people are familiar with his larynx than Obama's, right? We have no data to prove that, but we're certain PPP could do one of their ridiculous polls, and that they'd find just that. Freeman, clearly, is the most obvious choice for any voiceover — like, ever — but his price tag may be too high. There's not a lot of money in public radio. But he has said some things on NPR's Tell Me More that made some waves, so, hey, maybe he'll do it for free?

David Attenborough

Another too obvious choice. You're probably already familiar with Attenborough from his work on the BBC's Planet Earth. He's clear and concise, but the British accent doesn't exactly scream American public radio.

Niel Degrasse Tyson

This smooth-speaking scientist will be the favorite among the geek crowd. He's a regular guest on Colbert and Stewart, if you don't know him from his usual work on PBS and the History Channel. He has a soft, clear, velvety voice that would work well on the radio.

Liev Schreiber

He may not be an immediately obvious choice, but he's still got a proven body of work behind him. Like Tyson, Schreiber has done work for PBS's Nova, but you would probably be more familiar with his HBO work. Schrieber's provided the voiceover narration for the 24/7 series and a number of other heralded HBO sports docs. He sounds completely differently when he's doing narration than in the movies.

Whoopi Goldberg

Perhaps you only know her as the star of Ed or for her work on The View, but Whoopi is an accomplished narrator, too. She has a very distinct voice, and that helps with these things. It's a little gravelly, sure, but those years of stand-up experience have honed her into an effective speaker.

Benedict Cumberbatch

He may be too booked up with his busy slate of movies and Star Trek promotional work and, eventually, another season of Sherlock. But any man well spoken enough to play the famous British detective would probably do fantastic on the radio. Check out how quick and clear his delivery is here. He doesn't stutter or stumble once:

Fran Dresher

Who wouldn't listen to "... and this is NPR, hanhanhanhanhanhan"?

Human Transit: how sim city greenwashes parking

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Here's a shot of an edge city from the new SimCity. Notice what's missing?

2 WATC close up
  (Source: BLDGBLOG)

From Geoff Manaugh's interview of the new SimCity's designer, Stone Librande:

Geoff Manaugh: While you were making those measurements of different real-world cities, did you discover any surprising patterns or spatial relationships?

Librande: Yes, definitely. I think the biggest one was the parking lots. When I started measuring out our local grocery store, which I don’t think of as being that big, I was blown away by how much more space was parking lot rather than actual store. That was kind of a problem, because we were originally just going to model real cities, but we quickly realized there were way too many parking lots in the real world and that our game was going to be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots.

Manaugh: You would be making SimParkingLot, rather than SimCity.

Librande: [laughs] Exactly. So what we do in the game is that we just imagine they are underground. We do have parking lots in the game, and we do try to scale them—so, if you have a little grocery store, we’ll put six or seven parking spots on the side, and, if you have a big convention center or a big pro stadium, they’ll have what seem like really big lots—but they’re nowhere near what a real grocery store or pro stadium would have. We had to do the best we could do and still make the game look attractive.

In other words:  SimCity deliberately misleads players about parking because if they showed parking in its true dimensions, it might make dysfunctional land use patterns look (and act) dysfunctional.

And we can't have that.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer tells atheist tornado survivor: ‘You gotta thank the Lord’ | The Raw Story

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIDrmYyfWe8

With the number of atheists continuing to rise, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday afternoon learned the danger of assuming on live television that his interviewee is a Christian.

“I guess, you gotta thank the Lord, right?” he told the survivor of a deadly tornado that ripped through Oklahoma. “Do you thank the Lord?”

“I — I’m actually an atheist,” the woman politely responded.

“Oh, you are? Alright,” Blitzer replied.

The woman, however, handled the embarrassing situation with grace.

“We are here, and I don’t blame anybody for thanking the Lord,” she told Blitzer.

archiemcphee:

These awesome photos are from the 2013 Weston Sand Sculpture Festival on the sandy shores of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. Each year the festival has a different theme and this year’s theme is Hollywood.

“Since the festival started in 2006, themes have included Fairy Tales, The Continents of the World, Under the Ocean, Great Britain, and The Jungle. What began with two Dutch sand sculptors building a giant King Kong from 30 tonnes of sand has now turned into a world famous get-together of some of the niftiest hands in sand sculpting.

More than 20 of the world’s greatest sculptors from nine different countries are working away using 4,000 tonnes of sand from the beach.”

The festival opened on Good Friday and runs through the end of September.

Microsoft: 'Only Xbox One controllers, accessories will work with the new console.'

by Sinan Kubba

Xbox One doesn't support 360 controllers, Kinect, maybe other accessories
Microsoft confirmed to Joystiq only Xbox One controllers and accessories are supported by the new console. The new system won't support the Xbox 360 controller or Xbox 360 Kinect. When approached, a Microsoft spokesperson provided us with the following statement:
"Xbox One was designed from the ground up with entirely new technology to deliver a new generation of experiences for both games and entertainment For example, the Wireless Controller will connect to the console using high speed data transfer to enable higher fidelity headset audio and future controller add-on experiences that are not possible with Xbox 360 wireless technology. Additionally, the all-new Kinect sensor's ability to locate the wireless controller is dependent on new technology. In order for Xbox One to deliver robust, meaningful gaming scenarios for all users across all experiences, only Xbox One controllers and accessories will work with the new console."
Microsoft previously confirmed to Polygon and Engadget the Xbox One won't support the Xbox 360 controller or Xbox 360 Kinect respectively. Neither is surprising, given Microsoft's new system has a redesigned controller and a next-gen edition of the Kinect sensor.

However, while it isn't explicitly said, Microsoft's statement seems to indicate the Xbox One won't support any Xbox 360 accessories. When asked on Twitter if the new system supports Xbox 360 headsets, Xbox Support reiterated the statement we received, saying, "Only Xbox One accessories will work with Xbox One, which helps us deliver better headset audio and other benefits."

pixelspolygonsandpie:

Arkanoid / Breakout are true classics in gaming, and plenty of games have come along and recreated those experiences.  One of the most unique to do this is Firestriker on the SNES / Super Famicom.  The game takes place in a fantasy setting, and players control two characters on-screen at a time, one aggressively trying to bounce the ball off of blocks, and the other as a goaltender-like figure who prevents blocks behind the team from being destroyed.  It’s really quite neat.  ^_^

OSI President Questions WebM Patent License Compatibility with Open Source

by Unknown Lamer
Via the H comes a report that the Simon Phipps, current President of the Open Source Initiative, thinks that the VP8 patent Cross-license agreeement Google brokered with the MPEG-LA is incompatible with the Open Source definition. The primary problems are that the license is not sub-licensable and only covers certain uses, leading to conflict with OSD clauses five, six, and seven. Phipps concludes: "As a consequence, I suggest the license is flawed when considered in relation to open source projects and is likely to be negatively received by many communities that value software freedom. Doubtless a case can be made that the patent license is optional, but I suspect the community issues may remain. Once again we're left with our fingers crossed. Google's making the right noises, but this draft agreement seems like a particularly unworkable approach for free and open source software. Its failure to allow sublicensing seems like a major flaw. Even if this doesn't result in a requirement for all end-users to sign the agreement, the discrepancies between this document and the OSD leave it disruptive to open source adoption of VP8."

Word Frequencies in They Might Be Giants Lyrics

Scientist and musician David Mackenzie created this interactive graph of word frequencies in They Might Be Giants lyrics. The graph is based on lyrics from 487 They Might Be Giants songs as found on the TMBW fan site (that’s a grand total of 80,375 words). As a comparison, each word on the graph also includes its frequency in printed English, as determined by Google Books data.

Submersible camera snaps pics of ocean going predators

by Mike Szczys

RPi-submersible-camera-rig
This camera rig uses a Raspberry Pi to send a camera down fifty meters (mirror on RPi blog) in order to spy on sharks. We got really excited at first thinking that it might be using the camera module from the Raspberry Pi Foundation but that isn’t the case. Do keep reading though, there’s a lot of cool stuff involved in this one.

The project used a collection of camera units spread over a large area to monitor shark activity. Each is mounted on an anchored buoy, using solar panels and a lead acid gel battery for power. The RPi itself remains topside in a waterproof box. It connects to the camera using a 50-foot Ethernet patch cable.

We figure the challenge of building the hardware parallels that of designing an underwater ROV. The camera needs an enclosure that can stand up to the pressure at that depth while allowing the cable to pass through it. There is also an interesting note in the project log about getting the camera exposure settings to behave.

Coffee co-op hopes balance of rules, responsibility will help it keep place on Hill

by jseattle
firehose

meanwhile, in Seattle
via Snorkmaiden

IMG_4481Sunday, E Pine’s only anarchist-friendly cafe collective, Black Coffee Co-op, hosted a Punk Prom. Predictably, it was a little noisy and ran late into the night. And, predictably, neighbors in nearby apartment buildings and businesses weren’t happy about it. But one of Black Coffee’s four founding worker-owners tells CHS that the co-op has charted a new course to be better neighbors and, yes, even implement “policy” as their experiment in community-minded business continues.

“Word had gotten out that you won’t be kicked out. People were coming in to just hang out,” Black Coffee’s Scott Davis tells CHS about complaints in recent months that the co-op wasn’t doing enough to stop blatant drug use in its bathrooms and was becoming a hangout for thugs and criminals.

East Precinct commander Capt. Ron Wilson confirmed the complaints but declined to provide specifics of any investigations related to the coffee shop:

All I can share with you at this time is that over the past several weeks we have received several complaints about activity at Black Coffee. Some of the complaints deal with City and State code and/or regulation compliance issues, while some deal with public safety issues.

We are sharing the complaints we receive with other city and state departments that may have responsibility/jurisdiction for non-police issues. Any allegations of illegal activity will always be fully investigated.

CHS’s message to Black Coffee’s landlord, Capitol Hill real estate investor Ron Amundson, has not yet been returned.

IMG_4458 IMG_4455 The complaints about Black Coffee were being lodged in the area since well before this year’s May Day when vandals busted glass at three Capitol Hill businesses after a day of rallies and protests. Black Coffee was closed that day so, as Davis put it, the workers could be part of the day’s celebrations and activities. There was a private “after party” event at the cafe. Davis says, despite the party, Black Coffee was not some kind of anarchist training ground or headquarters on the day.

“I love un-permitted marches in the street that stop traffic,” Davis who marched and was part of the protests said. “I thought it was super unfortunate that Bill’s window got broken. We are not a Black Bloc training ground.”

Black Coffee opened last year on E Pine in the building formerly home to Travelers — itself a counterculture-friendly hangout of a different ilk. It has settled in as a busy, interesting place to spend time and grab a coffee or tea while reading, working or debating social theory. Its anarchist and social leanings shape the space from the lending library to the black flags that fly above the cafe’s large E Pine windows. Meanwhile, commerce is underway with credit cards and cash part of the exchange as mugs are filled and re-filled.

The original group of four worker-owners has expanded to five and Black Coffee has grown already to be one of the headquarters of alternative culture and politics in the area. The space is frequently transformed into a meeting hall or performance space. In its six months on E Pine, Davis estimates Black Coffee has hosted more than 150 events and meetings.

“We didn’t set out to be a venue,” Davis says of the demand for the space. The group has already moved to cut back on how the cafe can be used and when, he says, and is limiting music performance to events tied to fundraisers and third parties.

Davis says rules around performances and how the cafe is managed have been part of a necessary evolution for a project with members wanting to cleve closely to social ideals while maintaining a functioning business.

“It wasn’t what we wanted,” Davis said of some of the troubles Black Coffee began having with the hang-out crowd.

Davis also said it was “eye opening” for him to experience just “how big the homeless population” around Capitol Hill is.

At first, Black Coffee attempted to solve things purely through community.

“Signs went up,” Davis said. “We wanted to resolve this as a collective.”

As complaints continued, the group discovered it was going to take more. Black Coffee resorted to the bane of any good anarchist.

“We did come up with a policy,” Davis said. “Zero tolerance for sexual behavior. Zero tolerance for intoxication.”

The result, he says, is a collective Black Coffee that can function — and serve its community — in the middle of busy, densely populated E Pine.

Still, he knows Black Coffee faces major challenges when it comes to fitting in — even on tolerant Capitol Hill.

“The landlord will never get a call that says hey thanks for leasing to these guys,” Davis said.

But he adds that he’s serious about making it work and is proud that the shop has been able to pay its rent in its first six months of business.

“This is my livelihood, something I’ve poured my whole life into,” Davis said.
