Poynton Regenerated, English Village Revives Town Center by Removing Traffic Signals

by EDW Lynch

The fascinating short documentary “Poynton Regenerated” by Martin Cassini tells the tale of Poynton, a small English village that removed the traffic lights, signs, and sidewalks from its busiest central intersection last year in an effort to revitalize its town square and alleviate traffic. The project is an example of the shared space street design concept, and while it may sound like chaos, it works remarkably well (see the before and after footage in the documentary). The redesign was the work of road designer Ben Hamilton-Baillie. For more on Poynton’s revitalization, see this article on The Atlantic Cities.

Local People With Their Arms Crossed on the Front Page of Their Hometown Newspaper

by Rusty Blazenhoff

photogs love it because they can frame waist-up shots without cutting off limbs

Crossed

The pose that says, ‘Hey, look at me. I’m featured on the front of my local newspaper.’

Journalist Jeremy Barr has started Local People With Their Arms Crossed, a Tumblr blog of people (often smugly) posing with their arms crossed on the front page of their hometown newspaper. Barr told Poynter, “I love simple Tumblrs, and I think local newspapers are a national treasure in more ways than people realize. I was looking through front pages with another idea in mind and noticed this pose in a few papers around the country. It’s such a silly pose, and it connotes so much. So, I thought it might be fun to see if I could compile these poses. Fortunately there’s been a steady stream of them since I started this at the beginning of the month. I thought it was funny, and I hoped people would agree.”

Mojito Jello Shots

by elsiecake

Best mojito jello shots!!!!Did you ever think you'd see jello shots on the blog? Ok, ok, but hear me out. These are so fun! I'm a sucker for jello inside a citrus rind! Get me every time. My soon to be sister-in-law made these really cute blue jello in orange rind snacks for my nephew's pirate themed birthday party. They were just jello, not jello shots. Just for the record. :)How to make mojito shotsHow to make jello shots in lime shellsI made these for a little get-together at my house last weekend, and they went over really well. These are the perfect amount of lime and mint, in my opinion. They are very fun and refreshing. Add the rum if you want, or leave it out and just enjoy your cute jello creations. Either way these are worth the effort it takes to make a batch. Here's what you do:Mojito jello shot ingredientsMojito jello shots, makes around 32 if using lime rinds. Adapted from Food & Wine

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
3 stems fresh mint leaves
1 cup white rum

In a pot, combine the water and sugar over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the gelatin. Add the lime juice and 2 mint stems (with leaves). Allow that to steep for 12-15 minutes. Remove the mint stems and stir in the rum if using. How to make jello shotsIn the meantime hollow out your lime shells. This is probably the hardest part of making these. I used a small sharp knife to carve around the inside of the limes and then a mellon baller to scoop out the centers. If the insides don't look perfect don't worry! Mine looked far from perfect. Be sure to leave the limes cut in halves until after the jello has set, then you can slice them into wedges.

Fill each lime shell with the jello mixture and sprinkle in some chopped fresh mint (from the remaining leaves on that 3rd stem). Place in the refrigerator and allow to set for at least 3 hours.Mojito shotsMaking mojito jello shotsThese are a fun little party trick! I think I'm going to make these ahead of time for the next camping trip I go on. I'm going to be that girl who pulls out a tupperware of jello shots. Ha! Oh well, at least they are the cutest and most delicious little jello shots. That ups the classy factor, right? :) xo. Emma

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team’s Japanese boxart

Love this cover — fans of the series will recognize the theme from the RPG series’ first and third boxes. I wonder if the North American packaging will keep the nose bubble since that trope doesn’t really exist outside of Japan.

The Tragic Inelasticity Of Bar Supply

firehose

". As long as your favorite bar or restaurant earns enough revenue to pay the rent, the last thing you want is for it to get a lot of publicity and new customers. That just leads to deteriorating quality through overcrowding or price increases. Either way, that magazine write-up just drove your real wages down. ... To make things better, you need to make it easier to get liquor licenses but also perhaps learn to love chains."

With the more and more people working in the food service sector, we need to think about its economics more seriously.

Big Asteroid (With Its Own Moon) To Have Closest Approach With Earth Today

by Soulskill
firehose

this fucking rock

An anonymous reader writes "Asteroid 1998 QE2 has an estimated diameter of 2.7 km. This asteroid will have a close approach with Earth at about 15.2 LD (Lunar Distances = ~384,000 kilometers) or 0.0392 AU (1 AU = ~150 million kilometers) at 2059 UT on 2013 May 31 and it will reach the peak magnitude ~10.8 on May 31 around 2300 UT." Radar images of the asteroid taken Wednesday show that 1998 QE2 has its own tiny moon, about 600 meters wide. Phil Plait explained how the images were taken, and what further information we gleaned from them. 'The very presence of the moon is a good thing. By measuring how long it takes to go around the primary, the mass of the primary can be found using math known for centuries (the more massive the big asteroid, the faster the moon will go around it at a given distance). We also know the size of the primary, so that means we can find its density, and therefore what it’s made of (probably mostly rock).'
