A Demented Tale Of How The Army Actually Does Business

America’s struggle to outsmart its enemies has been rigorously discussed since 9/11. Where the story becomes turgid—where we stop paying attention—is on the unsexy but crucial question of how that intelligence, once gathered, is organized and made available in a way that will allow it to actually be put to use.

PS4 interface video shows the console's evolution into a social networking hub

by Emily Gera
firehose

guys I do not want to get hype for this thing
but I kinda am a little

Sony's latest PlayStation 4 video offers a look at what users can expect from the new console's interface, including social networking-style features, video chats, and various download options.

PS4 owners will be able to share tips on how to beat sections of games by uploading videos directly from their account. More interesting than that, the video suggests it will be possible to download Killzone: Shadow Fall directly through the console, allowing players to choose whether to download single player or multiplayer modes first in order to access the title faster. It is unknown whether this feature will be available for all games.

Messages from friends are also shown popping up in-game, while the PS4 messaging system is now upgraded to allow mobile phone-styled auto-insert words. PS4 owners can also check out videos and send messages to friends, and begin console downloads via their cell phones.

Sony's PlayStation 4 is scheduled to release later this year for $399. Check out our in-depth coverage of the upcoming PS4 from this year's E3.

Holy crap, did the Enterprise just fly past the moon?

Romanian photographer Maximilian Teodorescu recently captured this dramatic photo of the International Space Station (ISS) as it drifted across the surface of the Moon. But looking at it a bit closer, you could be forgiven for thinking it was the starship Enterprise.

Vin Diesel tells us why Riddick is one big game of Dungeons & Dragons

by Charlie Jane Anders

fantastic quote; still love Michelle Rodriguez to death:

'I haven't board-gamed in a while, and I have people that are asking me to board game. I have a buddy who wrote a beautiful Gary Gygax script. [Dungeons & Dragons creator] Gary Gygax's wife wants me to play him. [laughs] Yeah, I don't get it either. I was like, "Me? I'm Vin Diesel! How do you want me to play it?"

I guess that's cool. I guess some people think of me as a dweeb or something. It's beautiful. I haven't boarded as much as I want to, although friends of mine, like Michelle Rodriguez, she'll say she thinks I DM Hollywood, because I'm able to do these things that are just preposterous, like shoot Riddick.'

Vin Diesel tells us why Riddick is one big game of Dungeons & Dragons

Just how many hells did Vin Diesel have to crawl through to make a third Riddick movie a reality? And what sort of future epics about Riddick does Diesel plan to make? Here's part two of our report on our visit to the Riddick set, focusing on our interview with the legendary Furyan himself.

Apple TV gets HBO Go and WatchESPN

by Jacob Kastrenakes
firehose

"WatchESPN offers live streaming of five different ESPN networks, but is also only available to certain cable subscribers," making it the most redundant bullshit ever

Apple TV users can finally watch HBO and ESPN without resorting to troublesome workarounds. The small media streaming box now has official support for HBO Go and WatchESPN, the former of which was said to be in the works six months ago. Three other content providers are being added to the Apple TV as well, including Sky News, Crunchyroll, and Qello. Apple TV's low price point and tight integration with the iTunes ecosystem have made it a strong offering, but competing products such as Roku give users hundreds of options — a far cry from the few dozen offerings on Apple TV.

All five of the new services will be available to users of the second and third generation Apple TVs after downloading an update available today. Though HBO Go is only available to HBO subscribers, it'll be a welcome addition to Game of Thrones' fans hoping to watch the series without Airplaying it over a Mac or iPad. WatchESPN offers live streaming of five different ESPN networks, but is also only available to certain cable subscribers. Sky News includes around-the-clock access to live news for users in the US, UK, and Ireland.

Rumor: Steam beta update file suggests game sharing is coming

by David Hinkle

"when the original owner logs into the game, the game sharer gets a prompt to quit out"
WAS THAT SO FUCKIN' HARD

Rumor Steam beta update files point to game sharing
Those who opted into the Steam client beta may see some interesting language alluding to game sharing in the "steamui_english" file of the latest update. It's suggested that Steam users will be able to set a shared game library - when the original owner logs into the game, the game sharer gets a prompt to quit out.

If you want to see the file for yourself, you'll need to be running the beta version of Steam - go into Steam settings and opt in, then restart the client. Then, you'll need to head into your public folder and open the "steamui_english" file in a text editor like Notepad. Final step: crack open a cold soda, sit back and feel good about being a computer genius.

I’M SORRY BUT THIS REALLY PISSED ME OFF AND I NEEDED TO VENT.

So I liked this page last year for the shits and gigs, as you do. I found it funny, and let slide the few sexist posts.

Only recently- and after I got a tumblr- did I really start to notice the abundance of rape, sexist and racist jokes appearing on my news feed. And it pissed me off.

I said nothing, however, because what could I do? Send in a message to the page and get labelled a whore and a slut by the Admins as I’ve seen so many people do?

Then this motherfucking gem popped up.

I usually don’t get involved in these sorts of things; if I do my comment gets lost more often than not and goes unnoticed. But I had to comment, I really had to.

I thought my argument was valid and whole, and I was actually rather happy when he admin directly replied to my comment.

I narrowed down my five favourite games ever and posted them.

Of course, I got beaten and labeled down once again.

When I asked for a rational clarification of his definitions of “casual” and “core” he did not reply. It was only when I directly insinuated the bias of his claim did I get a response.

“A feminist I see.  No arguments need to be made. Good luck with getting them eggs fertilized”

Note the use of “feminist” as an insult.

I have had my fair share of gender specific hate regarding gaming. I get told I am a fake and a bitch if I get a high score; I get told to “suck a dick because you are better at that, bitch” if I get a low score; I get told to “get back in the kitchen, slut” without any prompt at all, simply because I have a vagina.

I am beyond sick of this. I hate the fact that if a male who hypothetically plays a few hours of CoD can be easily called a gamer by the wider community but I if were to say that I was a level 34 on Skyrim I would immediately be called a fake geek girl, a casual gamer and a liar.

I hate the fact that, even though 45% of gaming consumers are female, developers and publishers still believe that there is not a large enough demographic for female protagonists.

I hate the fact that most women in video games are no more than sexulised objects in skimpy clothing.

I hate the fact that I cannot enjoy a game without being labeled and branded because of the fact that I posses a vagina and not a penis.

~sorry about the long post clogging up your dash. I needed to vent~

Off-topic somewhat, but important.

why this

…since when is Gears “casual” gaming?  I thought big-hulking-power-armor-giant-gun-dude games were pretty much the definition of “real” gaming?

PS: Anyone who’s going to get their panties in a wad over me wearing a gamer tee is nowhere near on a level where they get to call themselves my “peers”.  Y’all only wish you were that worthy.

Looking at this guy’s list of “casual games”, I’m not sure what the heck he plays. Not FPSes, not MMOs… the only thing I can think is that he plays a lot of Madden or something. Notice there are no sports games in his list. Typical fake geek boy, horning in on a hobby he has no business pretending to be a part of.

seriously, that entire fucking list is what pretty much every gamer I know (male or female) considers to be hardcore. Which is another thing that pisses me off, because why the fuck is FPS/MMO the end-all-be-all determinant of gamer cred, but that’s not the point of this post.

Yeah, and the other thing is that it seems needlessly specific. Like, why Zelda and not Mario or Nintendo mascot franchises in general? My theory: this is based on specific conversations he had with specific women he sort of knows. Basically, it’s a circular definition where casual games are defined as any game a woman says she plays, because women only play casual games.

Word. The fact that icky girls have touched a game and gotten their girl cooties on it is what makes a game casual, not the actual content. Therefore all games are casual. Nobody is hardcore and he disappears in a puff of logic.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Here’s a mixtape of all the samples from Yeezus

by Kevin McFarland

Now that Kanye West’s new album has been officially released after a weekend of everyone furiously listening to a leaked version, enough time has passed that we can get to remixes and alternate versions. There are no official production credits yet for Yeezus—although the tracklist for the album on iTunes reads “I Am God (feat. God),” the ever-present being in Yeezy’s life, for he is both “a God” and a “man of God.” But Babylon Cartel’s Gianni Lee and Mike Blud have put together a mixtape of every sample from Yeezus, including Nina Simone, Marilyn Manson, Snoop Dogg, and TNGHT. They’ve done the same for Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and others. You can download the whole mixtape here, or stream it below.

Verizon Accused of Intentionally Slowing Netflix Video Streaming

by Soulskill
firehose

"Verizon owns a 50% stake in Redbox"

colinneagle writes "A recent GigaOm report discusses Verizon's 'peering' practices, which involves the exchange of traffic between two bandwidth providers. When peering with bandwidth provider Cogent starts to reach capacity, Verizon reportedly isn't adding any ports to meet the demand, Cogent CEO Dave Schaffer told GigaOm. 'They are allowing the peer connections to degrade,' Schaffer said. 'Today some of the ports are at 100 percent capacity.' Why would Verizon intentionally disrupt Netflix video streaming for its customers? One possible reason is that Verizon owns a 50% stake in Redbox, the video rental service that contributed to the demise of Blockbuster (and more recently, a direct competitor to Netflix in online streaming). If anything threatens the future of Redbox, whose business model requires customers to visit its vending machines to rent and return DVDs, its Netflix's instant streaming service, which delivers the same content directly to their screens."

Evernote upgrades web clipper to save your Gmail, including attachments

by Casey Newton

Until now, saving attachments from a Gmail account to Evernote has meant either forwarding them to a special email address or dragging them into an open Evernote client. Today, the company released an arguably more elegant approach: an update to its web clipper that saves the entire message to Evernote, plus any attachments.

The new link between Gmail and Evernote makes for a easier way to keep track of files that might otherwise get lost in your inbox. You can save single messages or, by expanding the conversation, entire threads. As on other webpages, the clipper lets users choose a notebook to save to and to add notes and tags.

The clipper update is relatively minor, but could save time for people who spend a lot of time working with attachments. It could also prove useful for Gmail users running out of storage who want another free option with good search and tagging features. The clipper is available for free in the Chrome Web Store.

Gunpoint success allows dev to become independent, Mac and Linux ports on the way

by Mike Schramm
Gunpoint allows dev to become independent
Writer and developer Tom Francis originally planned his game, Gunpoint, as a showcase piece to earn him a job at a game development studio, but after seeing the success of the title so far he says he doesn't need to join another studio.

As you can see above, Francis hit his initial goal for the game from preorders alone, and sales have only gone up since then, to the point where Francis now says designing the game was "so commercially successful that I'll never need" to work for someone else.

Since the only real monetary cost of the project was a $30 purchase of Game Maker 8 a few years ago, Francis says Gunpoint "recouped its development costs" in just one minute and four seconds. That's after three years of work, of course, but the point remains that Gunpoint was very successful indeed.

The next priority, says Francis, will be to port Gunpoint to the newer Game Maker Studio, where it can then be released for Windows, Mac, and Linux. He's looking to hire someone for this task, so he can get moving on actual updates and another project eventually. It sounds like a tough job, essentially taking over the core game's development for other platforms. "But as the graphs above should suggest," says Francis, "I can pay."

Controversial pipeline video game cleared by independent review

by Tracey Lien

Pipe Trouble, a video game sponsored by Canada's TV Ontario about building an oil pipeline, is now available on iOS and Android devices after it was recently cleared of advocating eco-terrorism by an independent review panel.

The game, where players build pipelines while dealing with economics, regulations, efficiency, the environment and sabotage, was initially released on TVO's website but was later pulled after reports claimed that the game advocated eco-terrorism. It was believed that the root of the problem was that players were able to blow up pipelines in the game. The game drew nation-wide attention and TVO was ultimately pressured to remove the game from its site.

Today, developer Pop Sandbox Production and Publishing released a statement confirming that, following an independent review of the game, it is now available to play online as well as on iOS and Android devices.

The findings of the review state that: "Pipe Trouble does not support, glamorize or advocate violence in any way ... Pipe Trouble is not a game about blowing up pipelines. It is a game about building pipelines. To succeed, players must pit their spatial ability and speed against economics, regulations, efficiency, the environment and yes, sabotage. The game is designed to make you think and it does."

Pipe Trouble was showcased at this year's Cannes Film Festival and the 10th annual Games for Change conference in New York. It is currently available for iPhone, iPad and select Android tablets for 99 cents. A free trial is playable at www.pipetrouble.com.
