Add game consoles to your New Leaf home

They’re not playable, but at least you can now drop a Genesis/Mega Drive, Super Famicom, or PlayStation in front of your virtual television in Animal Crossing: New Leaf — you’ll need some cushions for Cyrus to customize with these QR codes from TechieWidget, though.

I have no idea why the game lets you win Virtual Boys and Wii Fit boards from the fortune cookies and not NESes or Famicoms.

Cybercrooks Increasingly Use Tor Network To Control Botnets

by timothy
alphadogg writes "Malware writers are increasingly considering the Tor anonymity network as an option for hiding the real location of their command-and-control servers, according to researchers from security firm ESET. The researchers recently came across two botnet-type malware programs that use C&C servers operating as Tor 'hidden services.' The Tor Hidden Service protocol allows users to set up services — usually Web servers — that can only be accessed from within the Tor network through a random-looking hostname that ends in the .onion pseudo domain extension. The traffic between a Tor client and a Tor hidden service is encrypted and is randomly routed through a series of computers participating in the network and acting as relays."

Colorado's Weed Problems Are Soon Going To Be Everybody's Weed Problems

At first glance, Colorado's medical marijuana industry seems like an unmitigated success story. Hundreds of dispensaries and grow houses have sprouted up since the state began taxing weed sales three years ago, bringing in millions of dollars in extra revenue. Colorado's fiscal windfall has led many to herald its program as a model for other states to follow, but in the capital of Denver, things are in a state of disarray.

"Okay!" Weiner said loudly, though not enthusiastically. "I'm going to go around the room now and ask you your name and a fact about yourself, and then I'm going to go back around and repeat your name to you." A member of the campaign staff looked on, nervously. "I'm great at this," Weiner said.

Rani Durgavati (1524-1564)

Pencil drawing by Lauren Goldberg (personal tumblr, art tumblr)

Rani Durgavati ruled the Gond Kingdom in central India as regent for her son from 1550 to 1564.  In 1562, the Mughal General Asaf Khan attempted to annex Rani’s prosperous lands.  Rani personally led her troops into battle and succeeded in defeating the Mughal invaders.  Two years later, Rani attacked the Mughals with the hope of a permanent victory.  Outnumber 20,000 to 50,000, Rani held her ground for two days before she decided to commit suicide rather than surrender.  Her son was killed in battle and the Gond Kingdom fell to the Mughals.

Rani Durgavati Fort in Mandla is open to visitors.  However, it is considered an unsafe place for women to visit.  According to The Times of India, at least two gang rapes were reported at Rani Durgavati Fort in 2012.

Details on NSA/FBI Eavesdropping

by Bruce Schneier

We're starting to see Internet companies talk about the mechanics of how the US government spies on their users. Here, a Utah ISP owner describes his experiences with NSA eavesdropping:

We had to facilitate them to set up a duplicate port to tap in to monitor that customer's traffic. It was a 2U (two-unit) PC that we ran a mirrored ethernet port to.

[What we ended up with was] a little box in our systems room that was capturing all the traffic to this customer. Everything they were sending and receiving.

Declan McCullagh explains how the NSA coerces companies to cooperate with its surveillance efforts. Basically, they want to avoid what happened with the Utah ISP.

Some Internet companies have reluctantly agreed to work with the government to conduct legally authorized surveillance on the theory that negotiations are less objectionable than the alternative -- federal agents showing up unannounced with a court order to install their own surveillance device on a sensitive internal network. Those devices, the companies fear, could disrupt operations, introduce security vulnerabilities, or intercept more than is legally permitted.

"Nobody wants it on-premises," said a representative of a large Internet company who has negotiated surveillance requests with government officials. "Nobody wants a box in their network...[Companies often] find ways to give tools to minimize disclosures, to protect users, to keep the government off the premises, and to come to some reasonable compromise on the capabilities."

Precedents were established a decade or so ago when the government obtained legal orders compelling companies to install custom eavesdropping hardware on their networks.

And Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive explains how he successfully fought a National Security Letter.

Now that Facebook’s stock is above $30, its employees are breathing a sigh of relief

by Gina Chon

Facebook-stock-price_chart

Facebook’s stock got a big boost from its strong second quarter earnings, adding nearly $20 billion in market value over one day. Facebook’s shares opened today at $33.54 a share, its best performance since its fateful first day as a public company in May 2012. If the stock can stay consistently above $30 a share, there’s a sense from some Facebook staffers that the company will have turned the tide against the naysayers that have surrounded the company since its IPO.

Before Facebook went public, it was the hottest private company around and its IPO was one of the most coveted tickets among investors. The troubles began just before its IPO when it signaled that its mobile ad revenue strategy was growing slowly. After Facebook’s IPO priced at $38 a share, it went mostly downhill.

The first day of trading was marred by Nasdaq technical glitches. It turned out that, after the price of the shares and the size of the offering were increased just before the public listing, there wasn’t as much demand as expected. Facebook shares have mainly been trading in the mid $20s and at one point, they fell below $20 a share.

The once hot startup was suddenly seen as a has-been. There were calls for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to step down. Amid the criticism, Facebook was on the defense. The falling stock price affected morale among some employees (many of whom owned shares), and also recruiting talent, since many senior employees are offered stock options as part of their compensation.

Some employees felt if the stock could just get above $30 a share, the story would change. Obviously, the best way to turn the news around on your company is to perform better. And that’s what Facebook did. Its mobile ads picked up steam, accounting for 41% of the company’s advertising revenue in the second quarter, compared to 30% in the last quarter. The results were particularly impressive given Google’s disappointing performance in mobile.

The quick turn in investor opinion reflects the challenges for newly public companies of managing the quarterly earnings calendar, which often leads investors and analysts to focus on immediate results rather than long-term goals.

Yesterday, during the earnings call, Facebook executives emphasized that past investments in mobile and other areas were starting to pay off. Zuckerberg thanked investors and employees for their patience, saying with the first year as a public company under its belt, Facebook had “established a good foundation for the future.”

We’ll see if Facebook can keep it up. Facebook CFO David Ebersman said yesterday that because newsfeed ads started contributing to revenue in the third quarter last year, the year-over-year comparisons for the rest of the year could be skewed. He also said that because of investments in the business and some other issues, expenses will grow faster than revenue for 2013.

As long as Facebook can continue to grow its revenues, particularly in the crucial area of mobile, investors will likely be on board. And that will continue to boost the morale (and the shares) of its employees.

Review: Belkin’s $299 Thunderbolt Express Dock works well, costs lots

by Lee Hutchinson
Lee Hutchinson

I admit it—I'm a dirty, dirty Mac user. The mid-2011 13" MacBook Air I picked up about two years ago has been the best laptop I've ever owned, and I haul it with me everywhere. It has enough battery power to get me through the day along with enough RAM for work, and its SSD and CPU are still nice and quick.

What it doesn't have is a fast way to get data into and out of it. Its built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi feels pokey no matter where I am, and the physical USB-driven Ethernet adapter only goes up to 100Mbps, thanks to the MacBook's lack of USB 3.0. The MacBook Air is a great machine for working, but it's a pain on the occasions I actually have to copy data in bulk onto or off of it.

And yet, it has that Thunderbolt port. About twenty minutes after I bought the MacBook Air, I tried to copy a multi-GB virtual machine onto the thing. Wouldn't it be awesome, I've been thinking ever since then, if I could actually use this expensive-ass Thunderbolt port for something useful?

EU reevaluating data sharing agreement with US in wake of NSA leaks

by Cyrus Farivar
The Austrian activist group Europe v. Facebook is raising serious questions about the viability of the Safe Harbor provision.

In a two-page written response to formal complaints filed last month by Austrian students, Ireland’s top data protection office said Thursday that Apple, Facebook, and other tech companies with Irish offices have met their obligations with respect to European Union (EU) law—despite all the newly disclosed PRISM and National Security Agency (NSA) related surveillance.

The Office of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) cited the 1998 "Safe Harbor" agreement, which essentially provides a means for non-EU companies operating in the 28-member bloc to come to a middle ground concerning the EU's more stringent data protection laws versus the more lax laws on the other side of the Atlantic.

"We consider that an Irish-based data controller has met their data protection obligations in relation to the transfer of personal data to the US if the US based entity is ‘Safe Harbor’ registered," wrote Ciara O’Sullivan, the senior compliance officer at the ODPC, in the letter (PDF) to one of the Austrian students involved. "We further consider that the agreed ‘Safe Harbor’ Programme envisages and addresses the access to personal data for law enforcement purposes held by a US based data processor."

Poker player who won $1.5 million charged with running Android malware ring

by Jon Brodkin

A man who has won about $1.5 million in poker tournaments has been arrested and charged with running an operation that combined spam, Android malware, and a fake dating website to scam victims out of $3.9 million, according to Symantec.

Symantec worked with investigators from the Chiba Prefectural Police in Japan, who earlier this week "arrested nine individuals for distributing spam that included e-mails with links to download Android.Enesoluty—a malware used to collect contact details stored on the owner’s device," Symantec wrote in its blog.

Android.Enesoluty is a Trojan distributed as an Android application file. It steals information and sends it to computers run by hackers. It was discovered by security researchers in September 2012.
