Urgent News From The White House

Oct 2, 18:32 UTC
Resolved - This incident has been resolved.

Oct 2, 17:02 UTC
Monitoring - White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has issued an urgent brief outlining the latest high profile furlough. Bo Obama, a.k.a. DOTUS, the Portuguese Water Dog who lives in the White House with the First Family, is now on furlough.

This critical cutback is estimated to save the government $324 annually, a considerable amount of political capital with the pet food lobby, as well as several days of Secret Service man hours.

Bo has been transported by Marine One helicopter to the street behind the Denny's in downtown Cincinnati, OH.

"Bo is finally done in this town" Junior Senator Ted Cruz said in a press release from his office.

Amid Silk Road uncertainty, Bitcoin value drops over 20% in 3 hours

by Nathan Mattise
Volatility of Bitcoin rates (in USD) over time (CT) this morning.

Bitcoin is experiencing a period of extreme volatility today, as rates for the digital currency dropped from $139/bitcoin to $109.71/bitcoin in less than three hours. That represents a 21.5 percent decrease in value at the lowest rate this morning. The value of bitcoins started to recover slightly around 1:00pm CT, dropped again toward the $109.71/bitcoin rate, and rose back to the low $120/bitcoin area as of this post.

This morning's Bitcoin drop comes amid major news that's tangentially related to the currency. Silk Road, the sprawling online criminal enterprise that used bitcoins as its sole means of currency, was shut down and had its domain seized. That action comes as Silk Road's founder, known online only as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” was identified by the Department of Justice as Ross William Ulbricht and arrested in San Francisco on Tuesday.

There is no direct evidence linking Bitcoin value fluctuation with the Silk Road shutdown. The Bitcoin drop could as easily be due to the currency popping up prominently in the news and sparking activity. News of the Silk Road shutdown hit the wires shortly before 11:00am CT, and currency-tracker Bitcoinity shows Bitcoin's initial decline beginning roughly an hour afterward (between 12pm and 12:30pm CT).

Natalie Portman Lays Down A Truth Bomb About Female Characters

"I want [female characters] to be allowed to be weak and strong and happy and sad - human, basically. The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you're making a 'feminist' story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That's not feminist, that's macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with."Natalie Portman makes a spot-on observation in Elle magazine about a hurdle female characters often face—namely, that if you're not an ass-kicking, fearless warrior princess then you get some of your feminist points taken away. Remember, folks, the "strong" in "strong female character" doesn't—or shouldn't, anyway—mean "strong" in a physical or emotional sense. A strong female character is one who's strongly written, with her own personality, agency, motivations, fears, and goals, whatever those happen to be. Because female characters, like all characters, should be written as complex human beings (except when they're not human). Imagine that. TV: Great Job, Internet!: Read This: Breaking Bad helped Damon Lindelof let go of people who hated the Lost finale

by Sean O'Neal

Not long after J.J. Abrams paid penance for his abuse of lens flare, Damon Lindelof has written an essay in which he attempts to end, once and for all, any further argument over the Lost finale—a confession suggesting that the co-creators of Lost are rapidly trying to unburden themselves in order to ascend. You know, like in the finale of that TV show Lindelof keeps catching shit about.

Lindelof was reminded anew of how people didn’t like the Lost finale—and how they like to remind Lindelof of that—when Sunday’s Breaking Bad prompted a fresh Twitter hell of people taking shots at him, because that’s what Twitter is for: the spontaneous discussion of shared cultural experiences, and the immediate ranking of them as better or worse than other cultural experiences. Then you find the person who created that loser art so you can tell ...

FBI: Silk Road mastermind couldn’t even keep himself anonymous online

by Dan Goodin

What will get you in the end is sloppy opsec. Short for operations security, it encompasses a sprawling list of disciplines, including keeping PCs free of malware, encrypting e-mail and other communications, and placing an impenetrable firewall between public and personal identities.

The latest high-profile criminal defendant to get a first-hand lesson in the perils of poor opsec is Ross William Ulbricht. The 29-year-old Texan was arrested on Tuesday on allegations he was the kingpin behind Silk Road, an online drug bazaar prosecutors said arranged more than $1 billion in sales of heroin and other illicit substances to hundreds of thousands of buyers. A 39-page complaint alleges that he was known as "Dread Pirate Roberts" in Silk Road forums. A FBI agent went on to say Ulbricht controlled every aspect of the site, including crucial server infrastructure and programming code that used the Tor anonymity service and Bitcoin digital currency to conceal the identities of operators, sellers, and buyers.

Despite the elaborate technical underpinnings, however, the complaint portrays Ulbricht as a drug lord who made rookie mistakes. In an October 11, 2011 posting to a Bitcoin Talk forum, for instance, a user called "altoid" advertised he was looking for an "IT pro in the Bitcoin community" to work in a venture-backed startup. The post directed applications to send responses to "rossulbricht at gmail dot com." It came about nine months after two previous posts—also made by a user "altoid," to shroomery.org and Bitcoin Talk—were among the first to advertise a hidden Tor service that operated as a kind of "anonymous amazon.com." Both of the earlier posts referenced silkroad420.wordpress.com.

Getting Schooled On Sikhism

by Andrew Sullivan
firehose

via Russian Sledges

Most Americans know very little about the Sikh religion:

The study, titled “Turban Myths,” found that 70 percent of Americans misidentify turban-wearers, with 48 percent identifying men in turbans as Muslim despite the fact that most turbaned men in the U.S. are actually Sikh. More than one-third of Americans associate turban wearers with Osama bin Laden, more than with other named Muslim or Sikh alternatives and more than with no one in particular. And at least one in five people surveyed said that they would become angry or apprehensive if they encountered a stranger wearing a turban.

Although Sikhs have lived in the U.S. since the 19th century, the study also found that Americans still know relatively little about the community. According to the survey, 70 percent of Americans cannot identify a Sikh, and 79 percent cannot identify India as the religion’s country of origin. In fact, nearly half of Americans believe that Sikhism is actually a sect of Islam.

Fortunately, Captain America is here to help.

The NSA tracked US cellphone locations during secret experiment, says NYT report

by Chris Welch

The NSA has repeatedly denied that it tracks cellphone location data as part of its broad surveillance efforts. But today The New York Times reports that the agency has secretly tested such bulk data collection — and it's done so on more than one occasion. A pilot program allegedly ran in 2010 and again the following year. These tests involved actual data samples from American wireless customers and were intended "to test the ability" of the NSA's systems to handle the resulting data format, according to the report. The number of Americans unknowingly involved in the pilot isn't clear, nor has the NSA said whether it still possesses the resulting data.

"That data was not used for any other purpose and was never available for intelligence analysis purposes," reads a draft answer written for intelligence director James Clapper ahead of his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The Times obtained Clapper's written answer in advance of the hearing. The agency ultimately decided against pursuing location tracking further, but Clapper's prepared response offers little else in terms of specifics.

The issue came under renewed scrutiny last week after Senator Ron Wyden asked NSA director General Keith Alexander whether the agency had ever collected such location data in bulk. Alexander denied that the NSA receives cell-site information under the Patriot Act and said the agency "has no current plans to do so." But he added that classified data given to the Senate Intelligence Committee would offer "additional detail" on the matter, raising concerns that the NSA monitors location through some other legal justification. Wireless carriers have the ability to track your every movement, and today's news confirms that the NSA has at least experimented with taking advantage of that.

'But if you should fall in love with a girl - and loving and falling in love are two very distinct things - the first kiss is the end. You’ve all seen the movie. Or the television show. Or the after-school special, or you’ve read the book that was banned from your school’s library for containing Sexual Content. The point of your story is not to fall in love. The point of your story is to struggle. Your story begins with a lie and climaxes in a truth and ends with a kiss. In the movie of your life, forty-five minutes are devoted to you figuring out how to say that you want to kiss girls, and another half-hour is devoted to people’s objections, and maybe the last fifteen minutes is you kissing the girl. Maybe you don’t even get to kiss the girl. Maybe she tells you that she’s flattered, but she doesn’t bat for your team.

The critics swoon; it’s realistic, they say, so realistic, to depict the struggle of the modern teen, the heartbreak of irresolvable incompatibility. Isn’t that always what celebrities cite in their divorces? “Irreconciliable differences.”

And so you’re lying on the floor of your bathroom, your knees curled to your chest, or you’re on your sofa with a pint of ice cream, or you’re in bed watching your favourite sad movie on Netflix, and the collective weight of all that you consume settles on your shoulders, leans in, and whispers, “You were never meant to fall in love.” '
