Anti-GMO crop paper to be forcibly retracted

by John Timmer

Last year, a French researcher made waves by announcing a study that suggested genetically modified corn could lead to an increased incidence of tumors in lab animals. But the way the finding was announced seemed designed to generate publicity while avoiding any scientific evaluation of the results. Since then, the scientific criticisms have rolled in, and they have been scathing. Now, the editor of the journal that published it has decided to pull the paper despite the objections of its primary author.

The initial publication focused on corn that had been genetically engineered to carry a gene that allowed it to break down a herbicide. French researchers, led by Gilles-Eric Séralini, fed the corn, with and without herbicide, to rats. Control populations were given the herbicide alone or unmodified corn. The authors concluded that the genetically modified corn led to an elevated incidence of tumors and early death.

But even a cursory glance at the results suggested there were some severe problems with this conclusion. To begin with, there were similar effects caused by both the genetically engineered crop and by the herbicide it was designed to degrade. None of the treatments showed a dose effect; in some cases, the lowest doses had the most dramatic effect. And, if the treatment populations were combined, in some cases they were healthier than the controls. Tests of whether the results were statistically significant were completely lacking.

Reading public Google Drive spreadsheets in Unity, without authentication

by noreply@blogger.com (Robert Yang)

I'm working on a project with a collaborator who doesn't use Unity and doesn't really have an interest in game development (gasp) but it is still important that she can add/edit item data for the game. From a practical workflow perspective, I probably would've kept the item data separate from the game code anyway, to make it easier to balance and tweak stuff. This is usually the stage at which you'd make your own level editor or game database editor or something, but maybe there's a better way -- we can just tell Unity to read from a public Google Docs spreadsheet and parse the data. That way, anyone can edit the game levels or localization strings or whatever from anywhere in the world, and the game client will update data seamlessly.

A lot of this post comes from Clark Kromenaker's great post on accessing Google Docs services with C#, and a lot of my setup process is the same as his.

However, my particular project didn't need any data kept private, the game itself didn't need write access to the documents, and authentication looked like a pain (e.g. using OAuth 2.0 requires you to open a browser window so the user can okay the permissions? Yeah, no thanks) so I worked out how to access read-only publicly published Google Drive spreadsheets without any logins or anything.

First, start with a lot of steps from Kromenaker's post:

1) Download and install the Google Data API for .NET...

2) Grab the following DLLs from the package and put them in your project folder, maybe under /Assets/Plugins/ (as far as I know, this should work fine in the free version of Unity since these are pure .NET assemblies? I think?)
  • Google.GData.AccessControl
  • Google.GData.Client
  • Google.GData.Extensions
  • Google.GData.Spreadsheets
  • Newtonsoft.Json
From there, I diverge from the original tutorial:

3) Open up your spreadsheet in Google Docs and go to File >> Publish to the Web, and publish it to the web. To make it publicly accessible to the API, you MUST publish it publicly like this! You CANNOT just click the "Share" button and change access rights to share with anyone, that's something different according to the API. Yes, it's confusing.

4) Now before we go back to Unity, we need some way to tell Unity which spreadsheet document to grab. To do that you should copy the document key identifier, that long string of letters and numbers after "key=" in the URL to access your spreadsheet, and save that somewhere for later. It should look something like "1Ak-N8rbAmu7WdGRFdllybTBIaU1Ic0FxYklIbk1vYlE"... and stop at the first ampersand ("&") in the URL, you don't want any ampersands here.

5) Copy and paste the script below into a file like Assets/Scripts/GDocService.cs or something, somewhere in your assets folder. It doesn't matter where they go because the classes have public static functions and thus any script in the project can use them.

The "InsecureSecurityPolicy" stuff is to trick Mono into making HTTPS calls. More details on that are in Kromenaker's post.

6) Make a new separate script and make sure you have "using Google.GData.Client;" and "using Google.GData.Spreadsheets;" at the top.

7) To grab the data from that script, you'll need to use that document key you copied from step 3 to pass into my GDocService.GetSpreadsheet( ); function. From there, use the list-based spreadsheet feed API to grab data from your spreadsheet, or look at the debug stuff in the GetSpreadsheet( ); function to get started with that.

Keep in mind that all the data you grab will be of type "string" -- to get it usable as numbers, you will have to use int.Parse( ); or float.Parse( ); to turn the string into a number. Or let's say you have a dollar sign ($) at the beginning of each column value in the spreadsheet; you'll have to use string.Substring( ); or string.TrimStart( ); to take that dollar sign off.

NOTES:
  • Ideally, you will cache the spreadsheet data when your game starts up, and work with that data.
  • This is read-only access, and public access. You are telling Unity to read from a public spreadsheet feed that anyone can grab from their browser too.
  • This does not work in the Unity web player's security sandbox. The security sandbox allows you to grab files only on the same site as where the web player is hosted. What you'd do in the web player instead, maybe, is use Application.ExternalCall to call some Javascript on the web page, have that Javascript grab the data, and then pass that data back into Unity. For more information on Unity browser communication, see the manual

Piracy Offers Heavy Metal a New Business Model

by samzenpus
hessian writes "Despite being extensively pirated worldwide, Iron Maiden have managed to put themselves in the £10-20m for 2012. This means that despite the growing popularity of the band on social media, and the extensive and pervasive torrent downloading of the band's music, books and movies, the band is turning a profit. This is in defiance of the past business model, and the idea that piracy is killing music. In fact, piracy seems to be saving music in Iron Maiden's case. One reason for this may be metal itself. It has a fiercely loyal fanbase and a clear brand and identity. The audience identifies with the genre, which stands in contrast to genericized genres. It doggedly maintains its own identity and shuns outsiders. As a result, fans tend to identify more with their music, and place a higher value on purchasing it."

Why Competing For Tenure Is Like Trying To Become a Drug Lord

by samzenpus
Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes "Scott Jaschik writes in Inside Higher Education that the academic job market is structured in many respects like a drug gang, with an expanding mass of outsiders and a shrinking core of insiders and with income distribution within gangs extremely skewed in favor of those at the top, while the rank-and-file street sellers earned even less than employees in legitimate low-skilled activities. According to Alexandre Afonso, academic systems rely at least to some extent on the existence of a supply of 'outsiders' ready to forgo wages and employment security in exchange for the prospect of prestige, freedom and reasonably high salaries that tenured positions entail. 'What you have is an increasing number of brilliant PhD graduates arriving every year into the market hoping to secure a permanent position as a professor and enjoying freedom and high salaries, a bit like the rank-and-file drug dealer hoping to become a drug lord,' says Afonso. 'To achieve that, they are ready to forgo the income and security that they could have in other areas of employment by accepting insecure working conditions in the hope of securing jobs that are not expanding at the same rate.' The Chronicle of Higher Education recently reported on adjunct lecturers who rely on food stamps to make ends meet. Afonso adds that he is not trying to discourage everyone from pursuing Ph.D.s but that prospective graduate students need to go in with a full awareness of the job market."

Snowden Document Says Dutch Secret Service Hacks Internet Forums

by timothy
vikingpower writes "In the ever-longer wake of the NSA scandal, much-respected Dutch newspaper NRC today reveals, in English, as mandated by the gravity of the occasion, that the Dutch secret service, the AIVD, hacks internet forums. And yes, that is gross misconduct against Dutch law. The service, whose headquarters are in Zoetermeer, did not yet comment upon the divulgence of the document from Edward Snowden's collection. Incensed Dutch parliamentarians are calling for an enquiry."

Google Is Building a Way To Launch Chrome Apps Without Installation

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "Google really wants Chrome apps to take off. Not only has the company added rich notifications, in-app payments, and an app launcher into its browser, but now it's developing ephemeral apps that launch by just clicking a link. There are two separate components here. Ephemeral apps (you can enable this under the chrome://flags/#enable-ephemeral-apps flag) let you try a Chrome app before installing it. Linkable ephemeral apps (under the chrome://flags/#enable-linkable-ephemeral-apps flag) meanwhile allow you to launch said apps from hyperlinks."

→ Newsstand sucks in iOS 7

Hamish McKenzie:

Whereas the Newsstand in previous version of iOS looked like a bookshelf hosting a row of magazine covers, the new version is opaque, showing only a diagrammatic representation of generic magazine covers.

… But what’s worse for publishers is that there is now no visual reminder within the Newsstand icon that there are publications inside, waiting to be read. On top of that, in iOS7 users can now hide the Newsstand icon inside a folder. The once-special treatment that Apple gave publishers in order to encourage the distribution of magazines to the iPhone and iPad had apparently vanished, at least in terms of visual prominence.

The problems with Newsstand go even deeper on the technical and economic side:

  • Auto-renewing subscriptions, which launched as effectively Newsstand-exclusive, are now permitted in any app that sells content or services that fit within Apple’s (vague, arbitrary, and capricious) permitted categories for auto-renewal.
  • Background downloads and silent content-available push notifications could only be used in Newsstand apps prior to iOS 7. But under iOS 7, these are available to all apps.

Adding insult to injury, the new NSURLSession background-download system is much better than Newsstand’s old NKAssetDownload system, and during the iOS 7 beta, Newsstand developers were told to stick with their old system and not use the new one.

I see no benefit to magazines being in Newsstand anymore. Newsstand apps now have no meaningful exclusive abilities, and iOS 7 effectively buries them in a bland, opaque folder that’s easily hidden.

I don’t think there’s a good way for existing Newsstand apps to leave it without losing all of their subscriptions, but if I were making a new publication app today, I’d stay out of Newsstand and just make it a regular app.

Historically, the Oregon Territories had a Sunset rule. Any Blacks caught in the territories at night would be hung. It was a way of making sure the territory stayed abolitionist, but made sure it didn't pick up any free Black people or run away slaves as citizens. Many cowboys and deckhands were Black but had to settle in California instead of farther North. I would have thought however, that there would have been a higher Asain population.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my own perception and bias since this report came out, and my only conclusions thus far are that it’s depressing as hell. Our family lives in what I thought was a pretty diverse part of town, but that’s so obviously relative if the study in question is to be believed (and I’m not saying I dispute the findings, just that I’ve not done due diligence on it).

Portland, please. Be better.

Violent Video Games Affect Self Control And Unethical Behavior - Sci-Fi & Gaming News - redOrbit

firehose

The researchers watched as those who played the violent games ate over three times as much candy as the other teens, according to the study team’s report in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.

“They simply showed less restraint in their eating,” Bushman said.

After their gaming session, the teens were given a 10-item logic test in which they would get one ticket for a prize raffle for each question they got correct. After finding out how many answers they got right, the teens were told to take the appropriate number of tickets out of an envelope while not being watched.

Knowing exactly how many tickets were in the envelope, the researchers could later determine if a participant took more than they had earned. They found violent game players cheated about eight times more often than did those who played a nonviolent game.

The researchers also tested participants’ level of aggression by having them play a game with an unseen fictional “partner” for the chance to blast the loser with a loud noise through headphones. They found violent game players chose to blast their fictitious partners with louder noises that lasted longer than those who played nonviolent games.

“We have consistently found in a number of studies that those who play violent games act more aggressively, and this is just more evidence,” Bushman said.

Participants also completed a Moral Disengagement Scale, which quantifies how loosely a person holds themselves to high moral standards in all situations. The researchers found violent game players who scored higher on the scale, and were therefore more disengaged, were more likely to take extra tickets, eat more candy and act more aggressively – compared to those who played the nonviolent games.

“Very few teens were unaffected by violent video games, but this study helps us address the question of who is most likely to be affected,” Bushman said. “Those who are most morally disengaged are likely to be the ones who show less self-restraint after playing.”

He added that the effects were seen among both male and female participants.

“One of the major risk factors for anti-social behavior is simply being male,” Bushman said. “But even girls were more likely to eat extra chocolate and to cheat and to act aggressively when they played Grand Theft Auto versus the mini golf or pinball game. They didn’t reach the level of the boys in the study, but their behavior did change.”

Violent Video Games Affect Self Control And Unethical Behavior - Sci-Fi & Gaming News - redOrbit:
A new study has found playing violent video games not only increases aggression, it can also cause players to exhibit less self-control and more unethical behaviors.

Interesting read.

Whether I agree with its conclusion and methodology, I am still considering.

UK Home Secretary secretly charters private jet to (unsuccessfully) deport dying man to Nigeria

by Cory Doctorow
firehose

via multitasksuicide

The UK Home Secretary Theresa May wasted £95,000- £110,000 in a failed attempt to deport a dying Nigerian asylum seeker named Ifa Muaza. Muaza sought asylum from Nigeria, and believes his family were murdered after his departure; the UK denied his application. He embarked on a 100-day hunger strike, prepared to die in a high-security detention centre rather than go back to Nigeria. Muaza was an embarrassment to Theresa May, whose Conservative party has declared war on migrants and asylum seekers in a bid to appeal to xenophobic voters who defected to the racist UK Independence Party.

May secretly chartered a private jet to deport the frail and failing Muaza, whom government doctors had declared to be too ill to travel and in danger of "imminent death." The plane was refused entry to Nigerian airspace; it later landed in Malta (which objected to use of its airstrip). Finally, the plane returned to the UK, landing at Luton airport with Muaza still aboard, and the British taxpayer out £95,000- £110,000, in addition to the £180,000 already spent on legal bills, thanks to May's vanity and determination to appear "tough on immigration."

A letter from Roberts to the home secretary appealing for clemency for Muaza was co-signed by a group of cross-party MPs and peers. After it was revealed on Wednesday that a ticket had been booked on a flight to Abuja, the Nigerian capital, Lib Dem MP Sarah Teather called on Virgin Atlantic to refuse to accept Muaza on the plane due to the concerns about his health.

On Saturday night Teather said she was "truly, truly, appalled" at the treatment of Muaza. "To put a well man through this kind of stress and journey would be bad enough, but to do it to a man in such a desperate condition? Well done, Theresa May, you proved your toughness at the expense of your humanity. This should give everyone pause for thought. I cannot see why this was in anyone's interest.

"That the government is rushing to deport a man prepared to starve himself to death rather than be returned says everything about the culture of disbelief towards individuals fleeing persecution that is a defining characteristic of the UK's asylum process," she told Politics.co.uk.

"I find it hard to believe that a man who has refused to eat for over 90 days is playing the system and being wilfully manipulative. These are the actions of a desperate man who clearly fears for his safety should he be returned to Nigeria."

Dear Spike Lee

Oldboy Poster Comps designed by Juan Luis Garcia

Dear Mr. Lee,

It’s with sadness and hope that I write this open letter to you. I know you’ll understand my story of an artist trying to make a dignified living. It’s difficult and sometimes seems impossible because everyone wants you to work for free or for “exposure.”

Back in January I was approached by an ad agency that was hired to design posters for your new film, Oldboy. They wanted me to design some comps to present to you. They told me the budget was small and that they could only pay me peanuts for the comps but if you and the studio liked any of them I would then be compensated fairly through the licensing buyout fee.

I know, I saw all of the warning signs but the idea of working for you and having my design represent your film blinded me. So I went along with it. Dealing with the agency was one the worst experiences of my life. It affected all aspects of my life from my marriage to my work and my health. I was taken advantage of, lead on, lied to, manipulated, and harassed for over two months while I put all I had into designing the comps. I wanted to impress you and I guess I did.

The agency told me, “Congratulations, Spike loved a couple of the posters. Yours is going to be the key art.”, and I was thrilled. But when it came time to negotiate the licensing buyout fee the agency made an insultingly low offer. But they said that the important thing wasn’t the money it was the exposure and potential for more work. After thinking about it long and hard I had to decline. I tried to negotiate but they refused. I make the same amount of money in a single day as a photo assistant as what they offered and I had worked on these almost exclusively for two months. Plus there was still more work to be done so I had to refuse.

The agency was furious. They told me that I didn’t want to mess with Spike Lee, that I would never work again, that I was a despicable human, that they wish they never met me, and that they were going to sue my ass to oblivion. For what, I honestly don’t know. We never signed any contracts or work-for-hire agreements and I certainly never agreed to donating or selling any copyright of my work without a licensing fee.

The worst part of all this is that I never even got paid the peanuts they owed me. I was fine with it as long as they were out of my life. I couldn’t take another condescending phone call because I was “only a designer.” Many sleepless nights forced me to chock it up as a loss and learning experience and try to move on with my life.

Months went by and I realized that I had done all of that work for nothing. Early in the conversation the agency told me that I could publish the work as my own for the “exposure” so since I knew I was not going to getting paid I put the posters in my portfolio. Little did I know that they would catch like wildfire and spread throughout the internet overnight. I woke up to a google alert the morning after and they were on blogs everywhere. I immediately emailed the agency to notify them that the posters were taken from my portfolio and published without my permission. The agency responded by threatening me with legal action and worse. I immediately took them down from my portfolio but the agency kept calling and harassing me for several days after with the same threats. They forwarded me an email you sent them asking for an explanation but of course they lied to you and said they didn’t know who was responsible. I hadn’t done anything wrong but I was still scared. Eventually the threats stopped and I thought I could put this hell behind me.

Last night I was browsing the internet and my jaw dropped when I stumbled upon your personal and your production company’s social media pages. I couldn’t believe that you had been using and claiming copyright on three of those very same posters I designed. I just couldn’t believe it. I perceive you as an advocate of the arts and artists and have a sinking feeling that you are as much of a victim in this as I am.

I reached out to my attorney and several colleagues but after sleeping on it I decided to try and contact you. This has been such a nightmare that the last thing I want is to extend this. My wife and I are expecting our first baby early next year and the thought of bringing them into this makes my eyes water.

I need you to know the truth. Some of the posters you are using were stolen from me. I tried my hardest to resolve this amicably but the agency just blatantly refused. I am a fan of your storytelling and respect your success as a filmmaker, artist, and person. I definitely relate to your passion for the Knicks and competition, just ask my wife and family. I wish you nothing but success with Oldboy and all of your future projects. I hope we can resolve this between us because the agency refuses to work with me and they have tormented me and my family enough. Please feel free contact me at your convenience.

Peace and Love,
Juan Luis Garcia

Americans Suffer From Unprecedented Anxiety About Their Jobs

firehose

the only person WaPo interviews is a boomer, but whatever

Job insecurities have always been higher among low-income Americans, but they typically rose and fell across all levels of the income ladder. Today, workers at the bottom have drifted away, occupying their own island of insecurity.
