Turkish Halfeti Roses are incredibly rare. They are shaped just like regular roses, but their color sets them apart. These roses are so black, you’d think someone spray-painted them. But that’s actually their natural color.
Although they appear perfectly black, they’re actually a very deep crimson color. These flowers are seasonal – they only grow during the summer in small number, and only in the tiny Turkish village of Halfeti. Thanks to the unique soil conditions of the region, and the pH levels of the groundwater (that seeps in from the river Euphrates), the roses take on a devilish hue. They bloom dark red during the spring and fade to black during the summer months.
The local Turks seem to enjoy a love-hate relationship with these rare blossoms. They consider the flowers to be symbols of mystery, hope and passion, and also death and bad news.
Seeing a black rose in full bloom is a once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing. Don’t miss it if you ever happen to be in Turkey during the summer.

And no, the word isn't "FART."
RedEye Chicago has accomplished quite a feat with Monday's front cover. They've both summed up the Bears in one tidy word and also created the most Internet front page of our time. (Or at least, this year.)
Other options for the phrase that will signify the 2013 Bears:
- SNUH.
- Zzzzzzzzz.
- Nah.
- I shaved my legs for this?
- Hurf.
- FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
- [long, ragged sigh]
- "Well, [mumbling] could be worse [indistinct] Washington [trails off] ... "

firehosekimberlite beat (apparently is a beat now)
A nice sparkly ring with a piece of Antarctic ice on it—you have to admit, it would have a certain appeal. Scientists have confirmed for the first time that Antarctica’s crust contains kimberlite, the igneous rock that often harbors diamonds. Antarctica was the last holdout—every continent on Earth contains kimberlites, which in some parts of the world are mined for diamonds.
Australian researchers report today in Nature Communications that the kimberlites, found in the northern Prince Charles Mountains, originate from the vast Gondwanan kimberlite area, dating from 120 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. These rocks are thus from the same source as the kimberlites found in all the major Gondwanan continents—Africa, India, South America and Australia.

The Saints have lost their first-round pick for the rest of the year.
The Saints will need a backup plan at safety for the remainder of the year. Rookie Kenny Vaccaro has a broken ankle that will require surgery, according to Katherine Terrell of NOLA.com. The first-year player had been one of the most productive players on the Saints defense this season and likely will get consideration for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Vaccaro suffered the season-ending injury against the Panthers on Sunday. The rookie had a terrific season and started all 14 games that he appeared in. Vaccaro collected 79 tackles, a sack, an interception and a force fumble this season. New Orleans will likely have to start Roman Harper moving forward. The veteran has been in-and-out of the lineup all season and has appeared in just eight games. He has 31 tackles and interception on the season.
The Saints are 2-3 in their last five games but still have a shot at winning the division. New Orleans needs a win against the Buccaneers to have a shot at winning the NFC South title.

firehoseLouisiana drivers are the worst
'The study was conducted by CarInsuranceComparison.com and compiled five types of law-enforcement data:
• Fatality rate (per 100 million vehicle miles traveled)
• Failure to obey citations issued (traffic signals and seat belts)
• Drunk driving citations
• Number of tickets issued
• Careless driving citations'
This is why I always laugh at anyone who complains about auto insurance rates. Louisiana insurance rates had all of the above, as well as (for at least my first few years of car ownership) a drinking age of 18, and the fact that once a decade your car would probably get flooded or rolled by a hurricane

"empty-headed cinematic platitude that mistakes irresponsibility for adventure and accomplishment for meaning"
"portraying the character’s thrill-seeking as a sort of spiritual empowerment, largely ignoring the physical and financial dangers of dropping a couple of thousand dollars on a flight around the world to literally swim with sharks for a single negative that likely will not save his job"

NASA's photos from the first manned missions to the moon
By Russell Brandom on December 23, 2013 01:10 pm

When NASA's astronauts went into space, they took a 70mm Hasselblad camera with them, taking more than 17,000 photos over the course of 13 missions. That includes iconic shots like the famous "earthrise" and Neil Armstrong's first photos on the moon, but also more subtle moments from early fly-bys and the last-ditch Apollo 13 repairs. And thanks to Houston's Lunar and Planetary Institute, they're all currently available online, offering a rarely seen view of humanity's first missions to the moon.

sociopaths, etc.
Theft has been rampant in the Bitcoin community ever since the virtual currency was launched in 2009. That's why it's important to understand how it works before you try to use it.
Bloomberg TV host Matt Miller gave two anchors $20 worth of Bitcoin each using a paper certificate with a QR code made by the company Lazzerbee. Unfortunately, Miller flashed one of the private keys at the camera, unaware that he'd opened the account up to theft. It wasn't long before someone collected the Bitcoin.

George "Geohot" Hotz has accomplished many things. In 2007, aged just 17, he became the first person to successfully jailbreak an iPhone, and within three years he'd also managed to hack the until-then secure PlayStation 3. After Sony filed a lawsuit against him for the hack, Hotz memorably took to YouTube to release a rap track in response. Although he still codes, and recently won a competition for doing so, Hotz has another ambition: to be a successful rapper. And he's got the Soundcloud account to prove it.
"Hiding with your laptop, in a bag of groceries
Ingots in sacks, hoping thats said jokingly
Leaving me to hashtag wait and hope and see
Behind 7 proxies, you ran all locally."
Under the name tomcr00se, Hotz has begun to unleash his musical talents on the world over the past few months. "I write 16s sometimes. I should probably start sharing them if I ever want to make it as a rapper," the aspiring MC says. Treading the fine line between straight rap and 808s and Heartbreaks-era Kanye ("Cycles"), Hotz has a collection of freestyles, track previews, and 16-bar rhymes ready for your listening pleasure.
Hotz tackles a wide range of topics and takes on a number of seemingly conflicted personas during his adventures in rap. While his hacking background shines through in some tracks ("25 Down Guarana") much of his material focuses on tired bitch-'n'-ho tropes and Slim Shady-esque lyrics intended to shock and disgust ("Literally Sick").
"Round up a cavewoman, stomp her out with doc martens
Screaming bitch make me dinner like a little white Cartman
And she's too old to get her face put on milk cartons
Baby by the milk man, fuck no, abortion
Please can I keep it, ho quit your talkin'
Only carriage she rocks is off a cliff: Clara Barton."
