Evernote CEO acknowledges stability issues, says simpler design is coming

by Casey Newton

Evernote's rapid expansion into new product categories over the past year may have left its core software wanting. Phil Libin, the company's founder and CEO, acknowledged several problems in a blog post today and says Evernote will spend 2014 improving the stability and simplicity of its core product.

Libin wrote in response to a blog post on Friday by former TechCrunch editor Jason Kincaid, who lamented problems with Evernote's stability, privacy protections, and customer support. Kincaid's post was widely read, generating spirited debates on Twitter and Hacker News. "I could quibble with the specifics, but reading Jason's article was a painful and frustrating experience because, in the big picture, he's right," Libin wrote. "We're going to fix this."

"We're going to fix this."

Libin says the company had already decided to spend this year bolstering the core app's stability while simplifying its design. The decision came in the wake of a poorly received redesign of its app for iOS 7. "We gained many new users, but rushing to completely rebuild the app for the new platform resulted in stability problems that disproportionally hit longer-term customers, including ourselves," Libin wrote. "Since all Evernote employees are power users by definition, no one is more motivated to make Evernote better just for the sake of our own productivity and sanity. I've never seen people happier to just fix bugs."

The company has made several improvements to stability over the past few months, LIbin says. Design is a challenge that will take longer to address. Libin says the company wants to simplify design in five areas: note editing, navigation, search, sync, and collaboration. Evernote will never be the simplest alternative to note-taking — pen and paper still get the job done with ease. But for the 75 million-plus users who rely on Evernote to help them remember everything, Libin's words will be welcome news. And employees will welcome the news, too: "We’re the biggest Evernote users around," Libin says. "And it’s important to be in love with what you build."

A map of 19th Century shipping routes and nothing else

Nautical trade routes stretch like so many lengths of string in this arresting visualization of intercontinental commerce in the 1800s. The map that emerges highlights not only several continents and their busiest ports, but the various trade winds that cycle through the lower reaches of Earth's atmosphere.

UK Company Successfully Claims Ownership of "Pinterest" Trademark

by samzenpus
judgecorp writes "Pinterest could be in trouble — a British firm has successfully claimed ownership of the European trademark 'Pinterest', even though it has not yet used the term in any public products. Pinterest was formed in 2011, and popular by 2011, but did not launch in Europe until 2012 — months after the UK company Premium Interest had registered the trademark. That trademark has now been confirmed by the European Commission's Office for the Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM). Since so much of Pinterest's business is based on its name, the ruling could force Pinterest to change its name — a move which has precedents: Microsoft is changing the name of Skydrive because it infringes the trademark of British broadcaster BSkyB, normally known as Sky."

The GoDaddy Bowl is getting weird

by James Dator

Don't you dare forget football is being played.

Things have gotten a little weird in Mobile ever since Alabama lost in the Sugar Bowl. This is what's passing for game-day attire at Sunday night's GoDaddy Bowl.

Somewhere in the vast infinite loneliness of space there's a faint signal possibly being picked up by extra-terrestrial life. Their mission: Understand humans and their games.

Heck, forget aliens -- who the heck understands why this is happening at all?

Noted: New Name and Logo for The Tonight Show by Pentagram

by Armin

Over the Mooon

New Name and Logo for The Tonight Show by Pentagram

"The Tonight Show is an American late-night talk show that has aired on NBC since 1954. Currently recorded in Los Angeles, it is the longest currently running, regularly scheduled entertainment program in the United States and the third-longest-running show on NBC after Meet the Press and Today. […] On April 3, 2013, NBC announced Jimmy Fallon would become the new host of The Tonight Show. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will premiere February 17, 2014, midway through the 2014 Winter Olympics, and will relocate the show to New York for the first time since 1972." (Source: Wikipedia)

Design by: Pentagram (Partner: Emily Oberman, New York, NY)

Opinion/Notes: I included both the old Tonight Show and Late Night logos since this new logo sort of replaces both and so that the Jimmy Fallon-ness of his old logo can be used for context. The new logo is fine, nothing too exciting or too boring. I like how the "O"s align in a diagonal. I wonder if the moon will get tiring after a while. It's also hard to beat the stepped approach of the Late Night logo (also designed by Oberman).

Update: A moonless version has been provided, which can be used as an alternate logo.

Inside The Subterranean Marijuana Railroad

The Feds can't see them. Or hear the digging. They don't know how many there are or where they are headed. They know only that the tunnels are coming. And when they cross our border, when the soil gives way and the drugs start flowing, it's already too late.

A Working Canadian Tire Truck Built Out of 11,000 Pounds of Ice

by Justin Page

Canadian Ice Truck

Canadian Tire commissioned Ice Culture, a company specializing in custom-made ice sculptures, to build a working Canadian Tire truck out of 11,000 pounds of ice. They had the custom truck created “to prove how reliable the MotoMaster Eliminator Ultra AGM battery” was in very cold conditions.

We did something that has never been done before. We tested our Motomaster Eliminator Battery. We’ve frozen our battery to -40 degrees celsius, and really put it to the test. We thought what better way to do it then a truck made out of ice. We wanted to create that kind of wintery environment, and start that truck.

On December 12, 2013 the Canadian Tire Ice Truck attempted to set a World Record for being the first, self-propelled ice creation to drive. Not only did the Ice Truck drive but it travelled 1.6 kilometers in its record-setting attempt.

From: http://deeperdesign.wordpress.com/2010/02/26/is-iron-man-made-of-lego/

I was re-watching Iron Man recently and noticed something interesting. During Iron Man’s first “boot up sequence”, in the “terrorist” caves of Nowhereistan, some butchered C code is displayed on a faked up laptop screen.

The code displayed on screen, although missing some syntactically important characters such as semi-colons, is actual valid C source code. So valid in fact that I wondered where it came from.

Read the original post to find out the Iron Man/LEGO connection.

amazonchique:

Gail Simone mentioned this afternoon that she had originally hoped to turn Alysia Yoeh, Barbara Gordon’s roommate, into a sidekick character named Mouse. I’m a firm believer that every medium needs more trans characters, especially as proactive character archetypes, so I took the liberty of a quick costume design.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) for poor Mouse, all my designs lately look like post-apocalyptic survival wear. I also pulled in some influences from Stephanie Brown Robin (my personal favorite) for Bat-tradition.

This is really cute, and weirdly, I WAS going to give her a baseball bat!
