Newswire: Saturday Night Live also hired two black female writers

It was announced earlier this week that Sasheer Zamata would join the cast of Saturday Night Live, ending some five years of the show being forced to pretend that black women don’t exist or, worse, all look like Kenan Thompson. But that commitment to diversity that has always been a concern at SNL, so long as people are actually paying attention to it, doesn’t just go for in front of the camera: The Hollywood Reporter says the show has also added two black female writers to its staff, bringing in LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones, who similarly impressed producers at those recent, “secret” auditions.

Tookes is a former news reporter who has trained at Los Angeles’ iO West. Jones is a stand-up comedian—her most recent special, Problem Child, aired on Showtime in 2011—who’s also been seen in movies ...

The NYPD Would Love To Watch Your Rap Demo

Cuame Nelson was recording a new music video when someone called out his stage name. The rapper, fresh out of a stint at Rikers Island, turned toward the voice, expecting to see a fan or friend. Instead, he saw several plainclothes police officers, one of them wearing a shirt bearing the name of Mr. Nelson’s group.

The Trenton Thunder need a name for their bat-fetching puppy

by Rodger Sherman

The Hall of Fame announcement is clearly the second-most important thing in baseball today. A minor league team needs a puppy name.

There might not be a sports thing as adorable as the Trenton Thunder's bat-fetching Golden Retriever. This is Derby:

This is Derby's father Chase:

Are the dogs as efficient as a batboy? Probably not. Their inability to comprehend a baseball game means they don't fetch as instantly as a batboy, and they need a second to adjust the lumber in their mouth. But they're still ADORABLE. So we are fully onboard with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate continuing to do this.

This past season, Chase, the dog featured in that second video, died of cancer at 13 years old after 11 years with the Thunder. However, don't be sad: the circle of bat-dog life goes on:

Yes, that's right, there's a bat-puppy out there, and he needs a name:

If you have a name for our new bat puppy, submit it here:https://t.co/hAKlQFvxcm pic.twitter.com/OrH9ArhfXx

— Trenton Thunder (@TrentonThunder) January 8, 2014

The puppy will be ready to fetch bats by the 2015 season. Anyway: if they need suggestions, we got them covered:

  1. Robinson Canine
  2. Steve Delabrador
  3. Miguel Monterrier
  4. Trevor Bau-wauer
  5. Lance Barkman

We did 50 of those.

"Revolutionary Girl Utena" Transgresses Gender and Sexuality

"Revolutionary Girl Utena" Transgresses Gender and Sexuality:

    elementarym-sabre:

It’s not just about the fact that she falls in love with another girl, but what Utena Tenjou does for those of us who never played by society’s gender rules.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is pretty essential viewing for the feminist, queer media consumer who wants to learn more about the anime genre. It is the sort of show that will keep you thinking about it for days after you finish it, both because it so often defies explanation, and because what you do understand resonates so clearly with the queer girl experience.”

T-Mobile CEO: “This industry blows,” biggest carriers offer “horsesh**”

    by Jon Brodkin
T-Mobile CEO John Legere in July 2013.
    T-Mobile

T-Mobile US CEO John Legere has had an eventful week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He was thrown out of AT&T's CES party Monday night after the company detected his presence. Today, he got on stage to announce T-Mobile's latest initiative, and he unleashed a stream of curses and insults at competitors AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

Family plans are "total horseshit… nothing more than a contract on super steroids with staggered dates—a complete life sentence," Legere said. "Sprint is a pile of spectrum waiting to be turned into a capability. Right now, their network is completely horrible."

AT&T, meanwhile, is a "total source of amusement for me," he said, blasting the company's plan to charge content providers for the right to bypass data caps that hinder customers instead of just offering unlimited data like T-Mobile does.

The controversial case of GMO apples that won't turn brown

    by Katie Drummond

Sliced apples that never cease looking fresh: that's the promise from a Canadian company behind new apples that have been genetically engineered to retain their alluring color even after being cut open. But the apples, currently being evaluated for approval by the US Department of Agriculture, aren't being lauded across the board. In fact, some producers and industry insiders worry that this particular modification takes GMO fruit one step too far.

In a fascinating read, NPR outlines the process by which the apples are tweaked to curb what's called "enzymatic browning," as well as the ferocious animosity displayed by some members of the public where the modified fruits are concerned. As is often the case with GMO products, scientific investigations have shown the apples to be just as safe as their conventional counterparts —  but that doesn't mean the dining public feels comfortable with the concept. Those worried about tarnishing the apple's all-natural image, in this instance, worry that some consumers won't want to take a bite of an apple that doesn't turn brown.

Dog Paintings by Kamala Dolphin Kingsley in other

Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley is a Portland, Oregon-based artist whose custom dog portraits are unlike any I’ve seen before. Her paintings have a magical, almost transcendental quality; the worlds and creatures that inhabit them seemingly depicted through a lens of childlike wonder — which makes perfect sense for someone who spent the days of their youth taking goats on walks though giant Redwood forests; creating communal banana slug, newt and centipede farms; and “dressing up pet rats and making them ride the dog”.
