Excuse me, dog: You're taking a dump on the pitch

by Ryan Rosenblatt

A stadium full of people paid money to watch a soccer match, but they got a bonus show: a dog taking a dump!

Dogs are fun and cute and loving. They are soft and fluffy and like to lick your face. They are basically the best things on Earth.

They also take dumps and do not care about soccer or soccer pitches so if they find themselves on a soccer pitch and need to take a dump, they will do it right then and there.

Right then and there happened to be right in front of the goal while Rosario Central were playing River Plate on Sunday.

Remember, everybody poops.

The pitch was not just a place to take a dump for the dog either. It was a giant playground with lots of friends, as evidenced by the near five minutes he ran around while the referee, players and stewards chased him.

We are working to confirm that this dog will be the inspiration for the newest film in the Air Bud series. Fingers crossed.

<3 game worlds with isometric views ⊟ As someone who grew up...

by ericisawesome

As someone who grew up adoring games with isometric views like Shadowrun (SNES), X-Com, and various Tactics releases, I love seeing these shots.

The top image is concept art from Stéphane Boutin for Mercenary Kings — the PC/PlayStation 4 game doesn’t play or look like that, but it’s going to be an awesome run’n gun regardless when it releases.

As for the second piece, that’s "Bookkeeper’s Garden" from Chern Fai. While it’s not an actual game, god, I want to play that. I want to manage a magic library and garden, and be that little dude just getting a stack of books and reading them. Actually, I want to play/live in all of these isometric scenes Fai has posted on Tumblr.

12-Year-Old Builds Lego Braille Printer

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes "Shubham Banerjee, a seventh grader in California, has developed a braille printer made from a $350 Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit and some simple hardware. He calls the science fair project the Braigo. 'The Braigo's controller is set up to scroll through the alphabet. You choose a letter and it prints it out with tactile bumps on a roll of calculator paper. The print head is actually a thumbtack, which Banerjee settled on after also testing a small drill bit and a mechanical pencil. The first prototype isn't terribly fast, but it proves the concept works. Banerjee is working on improvements that will allow it to print full pages of text.'"

Flap no more: Google, Apple rejecting flappy-branded games

by Peter Bright

Flappy Bird knock-offs proliferated almost as soon as Flappy Bird became a (blessedly short-lived) phenomenon, and it seems that Apple and Google are both fighting back. The companies have started rejecting submissions with the word "flappy" in their names, reports TechCrunch, citing tweets from developers.

Games are being rejected from the Apple store with the company saying that they're attempting to "leverage a popular app." Google, more obtusely, is rejecting flappy applications from the Play Store as "spam."

At this time, neither company appears to have removed Flappy Bird clones that they've already authorized, so any developer that got in to the various marketplaces quickly enough now has an advantage over latecomers. As the bandwagon continues to roll on, these games remain popular and appear to be capitalizing on flappy branding: top of the iOS free games chart is Splash Fish—the Adventure of a Flappy Tiny Bird Fish, for example.

Time Warner Deal Is How Comcast Will Fight Cord Cutters

by Soulskill
firehose

"switching away from cable TV will simple make consumers more beholden to their internet connections, and removing (i.e. acquiring) the competition will let Comcast raise rates without losing customers"

An anonymous reader writes "This NY Times articles makes the case that Comcast's planned acquisition of Time Warner Cable is part of a strategy to fight back against the millions of people ditching cable subscriptions. 'The acquisition rests on the assumption that as people cut back on their monthly TV plans, the cable lines coming into their homes won't lose their value.' The idea is that switching away from cable TV will simple make consumers more beholden to their internet connections, and removing (i.e. acquiring) the competition will let Comcast raise rates without losing customers. The article concludes, 'The steady price increases in broadband rates cast a pall over any cord cutter's dreams. It's possible that you might still save money now by cutting off your cable. But if you plan to watch a lot of TV over the Internet, don't expect to save money forever.'"

LA Times: Snowden Had 3 Helpers Inside NSA

by samzenpus
retroworks writes "Three people at the National Security Agency have been implicated in Edward Snowden's efforts to copy classified material, including a civilian employee who resigned last month after acknowledging he allowed Snowden to use his computer ID, according to an NSA memo sent to Congress. The other two were an active-duty member of the military and a civilian contractor. The memo does not describe their conduct, but says they were barred from the NSA and its systems in August."

Insufferable L.A. design-types need help finding a hotel

the best hotel is inside your own mind! stay at home, make a blanket fort, and pretend you're human beings

Hi all, My business partner and I get to come to Portland for some meetings, and we're very excited about it. But - gasp! - the Ace Hotel doesn't have rooms for the dates we need. Can someone point me towards a place on par with the Ace, if not better? I went to the Jupiter Hotel's website, and was completely put off by the font/clutter/blaring music. That should give you an idea of just how insufferable we are. Thanks!

American football could be Olympic sport by 2024

by Pete Volk
firehose

"Due to roster restrictions, seven-on-seven is the most likely style of play to make it as a medal event (following the suit of rugby, which was recently approved for sevens play in the 2016 Olympics), and there very well could be both men's and women's events for the sport."!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seven-on-seven is the most likely style of play.

American football could be the newest sport added to the Olympics, giving the United States a potentially easy path to a gold medal every four years. The International Olympic Committee gave provisional recognition to The International Federation of American Football Tuesday, setting up a vote on whether the sport should be added to the events list, via FoxSports.

The vote could take place as early as 2017, and the sport would potentially be added to the Olympic lineup in 2024. American football has not been at the Olympics since the 1932 Los Angeles Olympiad, when all-stars from Cal, Stanford and USC played against all-stars from Harvard, Yale and Princeton in an exhibition.

It's likely that it won't be NFL or even college style football at the Olympic games. Due to roster restrictions, seven-on-seven is the most likely style of play to make it as a medal event (following the suit of rugby, which was recently approved for sevens play in the 2016 Olympics), and there very well could be both men's and women's events for the sport.

The NFL has tried to expand their global reach in recent years, playing regular-season games in London.

Justice League Custom Comic Somehow Features Shaquille O'Neal And Steel In The Same Room At The Same Time

by Joseph Hughes

DC comics

NBA Justice League

The NBA All-Star Game is today, meaning the best players in the world have gathered together to do dozens of interviews, hang out for a bit, and then play a game with absolutely no defense unless it turns out to be close in the final 3 minutes. It’s a good time.

It also means there is ample opportunity for every manner of product placement and cross promotion, and comics were almost certainly going to get in on the action. This time it’s in the form of a custom comic, as the Justice League visit the set of Inside The NBA to hang out with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal. But the team who put this comic together made one embarrassing gaffe: Shaquille O’Neal and Steel are seen in the same room at the same time, and we all know that’s impossible, as they are the same man.

O’Neal, the former number one pick, four time NBA champion, and metal clad, hammer wielding super hero, seems unfazed by the situation. So how is he pulling this off? Perhaps, knowing that this could someday happen, he made a contingency plan for an ally, aware of his secret identity, to cover for him in the Steel armor — à la Spider-Man and the Prowler, or Daredevil and about a dozen other heroes at some point or another —  thus keeping his secret safe. For the answer to this and other burning questions, you’ll just have to try to get your hands on a copy of The Justice League Goes Inside The NBA: All-Star Edition, which is being handed out for free all weekend at the All-Star Game in New Orleans.

Other Publisher Best of Fenix - Swedens oldest game magazine in english

by Sirteachalot
Celebration it's tenth anniversary, Swedish game magazine Fenix will release a three volume "Best of Fenix" in english. Well worth checking out.

Selling points:

  • Sweden is known for a very progressive RPG scene and Fenix magazine has collected over 500 articles over the year. The articles making the cut are the very best articles that are non-game specific. Campaign settings etc.
  • Amongst the material are several stand alone games (PRG + card/boardgames) by different game designers.
  • International PRG heavy-hitter Kenneth Hite is contributing several articles in every volume.
  • Bernard the Barbarian (Birger Barbaren in Swedish) - swedens funniest PRG-related comic strip is features in every volume. Excellent in any language and probably NSFW in a number of countries (it's swedish after all).

All in all this indigogo crowdfuning effort is well worth a look. Join at a low level and get tons of material in PDF-format dirt sheap or join at a higher level and get high quality hard backs.

'Sesame Street Fighter' teaches typing, one muppet fireball at a time

IT WORKS WELL

firehose shared this story from The Verge - All Posts.

Four years ago, DeviantArt artist gavacho13 imagined the worlds of Sesame Street and Street Fighter merging as one. Now, you can play an actual HTML5 game based on that brilliant idea. While Sesame Street Fighter is light on actual gameplay — you just type a few words on screen — the mashup elements are nicely done with animated characters, a backdrop, and music that clearly incorporate both sources of inspiration. Watch Blanka the Grouch pop out of his trash can, and C. Monsta throw cookie crumbs into the air before a match. It's just a shame that, despite all the Russian words you'll end up typing, wrestler Zangief isn't represented. Find the game right here.

One section of Hieronymus Bosch's massive triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights depicts a hellish chorus singing a song painted on the buttocks of a sinner. Now a musician has transcribed it into modern notation for our asinine listening pleasure.
