TV Club Classic: Doctor Who (Classic): “Carnival Of Monsters”

by Christopher Bahn
firehose shared this story from A.V. Club:
the first 3rd Doctor show I remember seeing. I was super confused as I'd only seen 4th Doctor episodes before that and was unaware of where this fell on the timeline

“Carnival Of Monsters” (Season 10, episodes 5-8. Originally broadcast Jan. 27-Feb. 17, 1973.)

“The Doctor and his companion are chased by monsters” is about as basic a description of your typical Doctor Who storyline as you can get. Much like your typical episode of any particular cop show boils down to “a murder is investigated and solved.” Whatever else might happen, however more complex or multi-layered the story winds up being, you can be guaranteed that when you turn on your television, you’re going to see the Doctor and his companion chased by monsters. Which makes the premise of “Carnival Of Monsters” nicely subversive: Here’s a story in which the Third Doctor and his companion Jo are chased by monsters through the inside of a television, and cheekily suggests that only “evil and horrible” people would watch such a thing for entertainment. Heh.

Extremely critical crypto flaw in iOS may also affect fully patched Macs

by Dan Goodin
firehose shared this story from Ars Technica.

Ashkan Soltani

A critical iOS vulnerability that Apple patched on Friday gives attackers an easy way to surreptitiously circumvent the most widely used technology for preventing eavesdropping on the Internet. That made the security bug about as dire as one can be. Now, there's strong evidence that the same flaw also exposes sensitive e-mail and Web communications on fully patched versions of OS X, with no indication that there is a patch currently available for the millions of people who use the Mac operating system.

At this early stage, the vulnerability has been confirmed in iOS versions 6.1.5, 7.0.4, and 7.0.5, and OS X 10.9.0 and 10.9.1, meaning it has silently exposed the sensitive communications of millions of people for weeks or months. Security researchers haven't ruled out the possibility that earlier versions are also affected. Readers should immediately update their iPhones and iPads to versions 7.0.6 or 6.1.6, preferably using a non-public network.

For the time being, people using Macs should avoid using public networks, a step that can thwart many criminal eavesdroppers but will do little to prevent surveillance by the National Security Agency and other state-sponsored spies. Because the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers appear to be unaffected by the flaw, people should also consider using those browsers when possible, although they shouldn't be considered a panacea.

Happy Ragnarok! Time to Choose a Side | Tor.com

Annie's beating some motherfuckers up

The heavy sleepers among you may have missed things, but, as prophesied, when dawn broke on this lovely 22nd of February 2014, and the golden cock Gullinkambi crowed as usual from the roof of Valhalla, this time it was answered by the normally-silent sooty-red cock that sits deep in the depths on the snake-and-bone rafters of Hel’s hall. This means it’s time to celebrate! Nidhogg, the hard-working and industrious dragon of Chaos and Destruction, has finally chewed through the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil, killing the tree and bringing the nine worlds crashing down. The unjust tyranny of Odin and the Aesir is no more. All bonds in the world are broken, and the beings unjustly imprisoned by the cruel gods have been set free: the hound Garm that’s been chained up outside the Gnippa cave for ages, my sons Jormungangir and fuzzy adorable Fenris, my sweet daughter Hel, my fellow giants, and, of course, myself.

Another court battle looms for Apple and Samsung as patent talks fail

by Chris Ziegler
firehose

but war... war never changes

First rumored in the Korean press last month, Apple and Samsung have now said in a filing with the US district court that they've been unable to amicably resolve a new round of patent disputes after having agreed in January to try mediation before going to court. That doesn't come as much of a surprise: the two companies have found very little common ground in a series of intellectual property disputes that led to a billion-dollar judgment against Samsung in 2012. The latest talks are said to have gone all the way to the top, roping in both Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung Mobile boss JK Shin.

The mediation effort covered a newer set of devices that Apple claims infringes on its intellectual property, which — as The Wall Street Journal notes — could eventually lead to even higher damages than before as Samsung's smartphone and tablet sales have exploded in recent years. Now that they've walked away from the negotiating table with absolutiely nothing to show for it, the consumer electronics giants are now slated to head to court in March for what could be the biggest legal battle of the year for the tech industry.

a movie spin-off of the sci-fi series that ran on the Nine Network and the Sci-Fi Channel in the US, for Jim Henson Productions, to be directed by Brian Henson.

Movie movie or TV movie? They’re saying movie movie. I wonder if that’s what they mean?
Judging from the plot description, events have progressed much faster than real time for the Farscape characters:

In the finale, the protagonists, American astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder) and peacekeeper Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) got married and had a baby. In the movie, it’s revealed the boy had special powers which made him the target of the villainous aliens so his parents hide him on Earth.
The plot follows the kid at the age of 19 when his whereabouts have been discovered and he rejoins his parents on their spaceship. Monjo says the film would be shot in Australia.

No explicit promise of returning puppet characters but this is Farscape so we’re going to be seeing some creature work, for sure.
That plot does sound very much like a “passing of the torch” piece, perhaps with hope of a new, youngster-led series to follow. I guess that’s the natural order of things.
It’s important to note that Monjo did write a number of episodes of the original series and that Brian Henson being onboard as director should ensure some fidelity to what came before. For better or worse? How could we know until we see the thing. I’m looking forward to it, though.

Well premise doesn't sound that original, but it's Farscape! On TV!
We can at least hope it's going it good.

Why Is Dropbox Back On the Chinese Market?

by timothy
Nerval's Lobster writes "Dropbox has renewed access to the Chinese market for the first time in four years. But why? The Chinese government first blocked access to Dropbox in 2010, most likely to prevent people within China from sharing data via the cloud. Now Dropbox is back online in China, albeit at slower speeds. Despite repeated queries from Slashdot, however, Dropbox has declined to comment on why China may have dropped the in-country restrictions to its services. "We still have nothing to share," the company responded after the third email. Dropbox isn't the only foreign cloud service available on the Chinese market (although Google Drive remains blocked): in late 2013, Amazon announced it would open an Amazon Web Services (AWS) region in the country; at the time, the Amazon Web Services Blog alluded to the "legal and regulatory requirements" that this new AWS region will obey. So questions remain: Did Dropbox know it would regain entry to the Chinese market? If so, did it need to agree to certain conditions before the Chinese government would "flip the switch," as it were?"

NFL expected to penalize players for using N-word on the field

by Ryan Van Bibber

A rule change could impose a 15-yard penalty for players who use the racial slur on the field.

The NFL competition committee is expected to approve a rule at the league meetings in March that would penalize players who use the N-word on the field, according to a Saturday report from the Associated Press.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the NFL, told the media that it expects the rule change to levy a 15-yard penalty for players overheard using the word on the field.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome also mentioned the rule change at his Saturday press conference in Indianapolis at the Combine.

Newsome said a 15-yard penalty has been discussed for players using the n-word.

— Dan Kadar (@MockingTheDraft) February 22, 2014

John Wooten, head of the Alliance, explained the thinking behind the rule change to CBS Sports:

"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do. We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room.

"Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

The league has undertaken greater efforts to promote a more tolerate workplace in the wake of several incidents, including teams asking players at last year's Combine about their sexual orientation.

Newsome elaborated on the process:

"If there's a need to, we'll present something to our owners in Orlando."

"With any rule we put into play, we have to look at it A-Z and what are the unintended consequences as well as the consequences. But as it was stated in our meeting, there are mics everywhere. If something's being said, it's captured somewhere. It would be an opportunity to get it verified if we had to."

Penalizing players for using a racial slur in the workplace is one step toward progress, but like most of the NFL's efforts at promoting tolerance, it's haphazard. What about other racist or homophobic slurs that might slide out of a player's mouth during a game? There's also the matter of implementation and interpretation, which left in the hands of officials could lead to the penalty being called differently from week to week and crew to crew.

And what about off the field, in places like a locker room, where the league is still reeling from the revelations about what happened in Miami with Richie Incognito and others, including a coach and a trainer, harassing Jonathan Martin and other players?

The NFL desperately needs to establish a clear and comprehensive code of workplace conduct, for both on and off the field, instead of reacting to incidents as they happen with a bevy of memos and piecemeal measures.

Watch this: Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake take on hip hop again with new 'History of Rap'

by Chris Ziegler

These two have been weaving through over three decades of hip hop music for years now, but last night Jimmy Fallon brought back his "History of Rap" partner Justin Timberlake for the fifth installment in the series — and their first since Fallon took over as The Tonight Show host. It was as good as ever, kicking off with LL Cool J's "I'm Bad" and ending on Run DMC's classic cover of "Walk This Way," working through a little Beastie Boys, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake in the middle (the full song list is on The Tonight Show's YouTube page).

GIF hearts Tumblr: A fairy tale for the Internet age

by WIRED UK

most 21st-century statement ever: "Cheese helps to run the Doctor Who Tumblr for BBC America, the second biggest Tumblr in the world and was also a cofounder of Know Your Meme"

"The reason everyone thought MySpace was going to die was because these (GIFs) are really ugly," says meme-master general Kenyatta Cheese, speaking at the Story Festival in London. Cheese helps to run the Doctor Who Tumblr for BBC America, the second biggest Tumblr in the world and was also a cofounder of Know Your Meme.

Cheese describes himself as being "of the Internet," but says he is mainly interested in the way people do things online. "Our myths that we have don't necessarily reflect the things that we do, so I want to create new myths," he says.

The GIF, he continues, is a 30-year-old file format which is woefully inefficient and yet, despite all the innovation in technology, is used to tell stories all over the Internet today. When he looked it up on a Wikipedia, all that was there was a description of what it was and where it came from, but a disappointing lack of insight into its cultural significance. "I don't think it's the facts that are important," he continues. The GIF has a story of its own—a fairytale, in fact—but it is a story based on emotion, not fact.

50 Cent returns to Daytona 500, embraces NASCAR experience

With no plans to kiss Erin Andrews, 50 Cent has returned to the Daytona 500 and is enjoying the NASCAR experience.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A year after an uncomfortable attempt to kiss Fox reporter Erin Andrews, 50 Cent was back at Daytona International Speedway Saturday.

50ckiss_medium
Born Curtis Jackson, the rapper has signed a two-year contact to sponsor Swan Racing through SMS Audio, a consumer electronics and headphones manufacturer company he founded. Appearing with Swan Racing drivers Cole Whitt and Parker Kligerman, Jackson was wildly entertaining.

Among the highlights:

His effort to lock lips with Andrews on national television prior to the Daytona 500 (Andrews soundly rebuffed Jackson):

"I wanted to kiss her, man. She handled it amazingly. ... It was an awkward moment."

What about attending NASCAR races most stands out to Jackson?

"The women here are extremely hot. Outside of going to church, you can find good women in NASCAR."

What was it like taking laps around Daytona in a street-legal Toyota Camry?

"We were going around there 135 mph. I didn't even know a Camry could do that!" Jackson later said the experience shook him a little.

On how Eminem revolutionized rap music:

"He took color out of the hip hop culture. It's about the music. Passion is what separates us. It is black music but he does it better than black artists."

Voynich Manuscript partially decoded, text is not a hoax, scholar finds

by Mark Frauenfelder

via Kara Jean

The 600-year-old, strangely-illustrated Voynich Manuscript (which resides at Yale University) has been called the most mysterious manuscript in the world. Not a single word of the secret language has been decoded, at least not until now. Stephen Bax of the University of Bedfordshire says he has decoded ten words from the Voynich Manuscript. This seems to indicate that the document is not a hoax filled with nonsense words, as some scholars have concluded.

Stephen Bax, who teaches at the University of Bedfordshire, has produced a paper and a video where he details his theories on the text and provides translations of ten words from the manuscript, which are proper names of various plants that are depicted in the manuscript. Professor Bax explains, “I hit on the idea of identifying proper names in the text, following historic approaches which successfully deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs and other mystery scripts, and I then used those names to work out part of the script.

I have not yet watch Bax's 47-minute video, above.
