[New App] Calendar For Android Wear Is A Basic, Colorful Calendar For Those Wearable Android Devices

by Bertel King, Jr.

Calendar-ThumbSometimes the name really does say it all. Calendar for Android Wear is a simplistic calendar that people with Android Wear watches can strap to their wrists. It shows the date, keeps track of events, and comes in one of five colors. The app doesn't do much else, but in this case, that's attractive.

Calendar1 Calendar2 Calendar3

The app's usefulness is limited out of the box, as users are restricted to a monthly view and must pay a single in-app purchase of roughly $2 to get access to the daily view with details.

Satellite Swarm Spots North Pole Drift

by samzenpus
An anonymous reader writes "A report from the European Space Agency shows the first collection of high-resolution results from the agency's three-satellite Swarm. The report illustrates the latest changes in the Earth's magnetic field and shows the movement of the magnetic North Pole. "Launched in November 2013, ESA's Swarm mission consists of three 9-meter satellites orbiting the planet at altitudes of 300-530 km (186-330 miles). Their goal is to monitor Earth's dynamic magnetic field, observing its changes over a period of four years. The data gathered by the Swarm satellites will help scientists better understand how our magnetic field works, how it's influenced by solar activity, and why large parts of it are found to be weakening.""

Apple and Google's Motorola Unit End Patent War

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes "Reuters reports that Apple and Google's Motorola Mobility unit are settling all patent lawsuits over smartphone tech. The settlement 'does not include a cross license to their respective patents,' and the companies will work together for patent reform. According to Reuters, 'The two companies informed a federal appeals court in Washington that the cases should be dismissed, according to filings on Friday. However, the deal does not appear to apply to Apple's litigation against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, as no dismissal notices were filed in those cases. The most high-profile case between Apple and Motorola began in 2010. Motorola accused Apple of infringing several patents, including one essential to how cell phones operate on a 3G network, while Apple said Motorola violated its patents to certain smartphone features.'"

NuScale Power Awarded $226 Million To Deploy Small Nuclear Reactor Design

by Soulskill
New submitter ghack writes "NuScale power, a small nuclear power company in Corvallis Oregon, has won a Department of Energy grant of up to $226 million dollars to enable deployment of their small modular reactor. The units would be factory built in the United States, and their small size enables a number of potential niche applications. NuScale argues that their design includes a number of unique passive safety features: 'NuScale's 45-megawatt reactor, which can be grouped with others to form a utility-scale plant, would sit in a 5 million-gallon pool of water underground. That means it needs no pumps to inject water to cool it in an emergency - an issue ... highlighted by Japan's crippled Fukushima plant.' This was the second of two DOE small modular reactor grants; the first was awarded to Babcock and Wilcox, a stalwart in the nuclear industry."

7 m3 of 34,000,000,000 Bq/m3 of all β water “leaked” / 6 workers exposed on the bodies

by Mochizuki

According to Tepco, 7m3 of the highly contaminated water “leaked” from a water treatment facility on 10/9/2013.

6 workers were exposed to the “leaked” contaminated water. At this moment, still one of the workers are in the process of decontaminating the feet.

The “leaked” water was before the process of desalination, which contain high level of all β nuclide (including Strontium-90).

All β nuclide density was 34,000,000,000 Bq/m3. Cs-134 density was 390,000 Bq/m3, Cs-137 density was 1,300,000 Bq/m3.

A sub-contract worker removed a pipe to cause the “leakage”.

[6 workers exposed] Fukushima worker “β dose of leaked water was 1 Sv/h / 6 workers had it over the head

by Mochizuki

Following up this article.. 7 m3 of 34,000,000,000 Bq/m3 of all β water “leaked” / 6 workers exposed on the bodies [URL]

The Fukushima worker “Happy11311″ commented on Twitter that the accident was unacceptably “low level”.

On the other hand, the radiation level of the leaked water was significantly high because they only removed γ nuclides before the leaking process. He stated β dose can be nearly 1 Sv/h.

Those 6 workers had the water over their heads.

Also, the contaminated water is retained so high that their feet are dipped up to the ankles. Tepco announced it’s only a few cm deep, which contradicts the worker’s statement.

Last M5.8 did cause plant abnormality / Coolant water volume to reactor2 “spontaneously” increased

by Mochizuki

On 9/20/2013 (JST), M5.8 of the earthquake hit Fukushima plant area.

Tepco was reporting the plant parameters showed no abnormality, but on 10/4/2013, they announced it was observed that the water volume to inject into reactor2 was increased from 1.8 to 2.0 m3/h after the earthquake.

According to Tepco, it wasn’t operated manually. Also, the water volume is not designed to be in sync with the temperature or the pressure inside of the reactor. Tepco stated probably it had something to do with the earthquake.

[Column] Tepco’s contaminated water system started collapsing

by Mochizuki

It’s been only 2 years and 6 months. However, Fukushima decommissioning is already falling apart.

It’s starting from the contaminated water storage. As long as they keep giving water to the reactors, it must increase. Now it’s already beyond Tepco’s capacity.

Having the third typhoon season after 311, the contaminated water system is starting to be collapsed.

I cannot even imagine what would happen, but I listed up the three potential results. All of them are likely.

1. Simultaneous leakages

The cause of 300m3 leakage hasn’t been identified yet. They have 350 tanks of the same type in the plant. According to the makers, some of them don’t even last for 5 years. However, there is no spare storage. All we could do is just to pray.

Even only for a Typhoon, Tepco required 2,100 workers. If those tanks (in Plural) start leaking at once, they are not capable to treat them. This is the water version of 311 Ⅱ.

2. Lack of the storage

At least 400m3 of contaminated groundwater flows to the plant. However, Tepco doesn’t have a plan to construct the new welded tanks after this October.

It takes 2 months to build the tank, but it is estimated they will run out of the storage this November ~ December. They can’t even find the land to build the new tanks.

3. Past radiation measurement readings might be all false

NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) has been pointing out Tepco’s radiation data doesn’t make sense. It shows no rational trends, and Tepco has no logical explanation for that. NRA plans to send inspectors to the analyzing site.

Whether Tepco was intentionally trying to downplay the contamination level, “a part of (I hope not ALL)” their past data may be thought to be false based on the wrong means of analysis.

Tritium density in groundwater keeps increasing in the East of 300m3 leakage tank/Heading for the groundwater bypass

by Mochizuki

According to Tepco, Tritium density of groundwater has been continuously increasing since they started the measurement last week.

The location is between groundwater bypass wells and the tank that experienced 300m3 leakage. If this increase is caused by the leaked contaminated water, it’s flowing to the groundwater bypass to be discharged to the Pacific.

The reading was 290,000 Bq/m3 on 9/28/2013, and it became 1,700,000 Bq/m3 on 10/1/2013. It jumped up 6 times much as 3 days before.

JP Gov doubts the reliability of Tepco's radiation measurement / Nuclear Regulatory Agency to send inspectors

Following up this article.. NRA “Tepco’s nuclide analysis may have a significant error” [URL]

On 9/30/2013, Nuclear Regulation Authority commented they are planning to send inspectors to Tepco’s radiation measurement site in the working group meeting for the contaminated water in Fukushima nuclear plant.

NRA has been doubting the reliability of Tepco’s nuclide analysis. Also, in mid September, Tepco discharged the “rainwater” retained in the tank areas due to the Typhoon. However, they took only 5 minutes to analyze Cesium-134/137 of the sample to check if it’s really rainwater, which NRA found questionable about the quality.

NRA commented the inspectors from Nuclear Regulatory Agency are going to see them analyzing the samples actually.

Tepco "It rains so heavily only once in ten years " → (One month later) "Overflowed for too much rain"

On 9/16/2013, Tepco had to discharge the “rainwater” retained in the tank areas due to the Typhoon.

(cf, Tepco discharged “rainwater” retained in 7 tank areas due to the Typhoon [URL])

Even on 10/1/2013, they failed in transferring the “rainwater” and caused a notch tank to overflow.

(cf, Tepco “Transferred retained water to a backup tank before overflowing” → The backup tank overflowed [URL 2])

However, Tepco was asserting the local dam to surround the tank areas wouldn’t overflow for most of the rains.

They stated it rains so heavily that they have to discharge water only once in ten years from looking at the past weather data.

Having said it happens only once in ten years, it actually happened next month.

Nuclear Regulation Authority commented that in the working group meeting for the contaminated water.
