THE “BURNHAM PLAN” OF CHICAGO: ”Make no small plans”
Known popularly as the “Burnham Plan,” the 1909 Plan of Chicago actually was co-authored by both Daniel Burnham and Edward H. Bennett. This ambitious “City Beautiful” plan recommended an integrated series of projects including new and widened streets, parks, new railroad and harbor facilities, and civic buildings.
Although only portions of the plan were realized, it did set the pattern for reshaping Chicago’s central area. Beyond Chicago, the Burnham Plan proved enormously influential in America and elsewhere. It favored an emerging neoclassical “City Beautiful” movement and generally served as an important influence on the new field of city planning.

Brandhaus II: A Building Conceived to be Set on Fire | Staufer & Hasler | Socks Studio
This building, designed in 2006 by Staufer & Hasler office, appears as one of those bold and purist concrete constructions so typical in Swiss contemporary architecture panorama. What differentiates Brandhaus II (this is the name of the project) from other housing buildings is that this one lacks windows and is conceived to be set on fire. And to add to the masochism of it, the plans are designed to harden the escape of its inhabitants.
You may wonder how this project got approved by the fire regulation committee, in the first place. But the truth is that this building, far from being a common housing program, is in reality a training center for firefighters, built to improve protection and rescue methods in the Zürich region.
Two conditions, the architects explain, make Brandhaus II exceptional: the lack of interior or exterior insulation coating and, above all, the request for plans to reach the maximul level of “disorder”; that is, to be a labyrinthine machine to get lost in, in case of fire.

'White House Senior Communications Advisor Tara McGuinness claims it boosted HealthCare.gov’s traffic by 40 percent yesterday'

The Internet was worked into a tizzy yesterday when Barack Obama turned up on Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns. Much like the celebrities who have sat between the flanking pteridophytes, Obama was there to plug one of his latest projects, in this case the HealthCare.gov site—the launch of which had been something of a clusterfuck.
The video, which sees Obama and Galifianakis trading barbs, appears to have paid off for the campaign, as White House Senior Communications Advisor Tara McGuinness claims it boosted HealthCare.gov’s traffic by 40 percent yesterday. That bump will likely serve the campaign well, as it still needs another 1.8 million Americans to enroll by the March 31 deadline to meet its projected goal of 6 million new enrollments. Meanwhile, historians have been struggling to find ways to assess the reality that the success of socialized medicine in America hinged on a ...

CBS has ordered three more seasons of The Big Bang Theory, getting the show closer to being as old, ever-expanding, and unstoppable as the universe created by the cosmic event alluded to in the show’s title. As Deadline reports, it’s the second such multi-year renewal for the sitcom—and since the last three years saw Big Bang Theory transform into a ratings juggernaut whose cable reruns frequently outdraw new offerings from other broadcast networks, CBS figured “Why the hell not?” Or, more accurately, per network chair Nina Tassler: “This multi-year deal further strengthens our network’s position for future seasons and marks another chapter in the great partnership CBS enjoys with Warner Bros. Television for delivering audiences the best in comedy.” Going un-mentioned in CBS’ press release is whether or not Tassler issued her statement about “the biggest comedy force on television” while John Williams’ “Imperial March” played ...

Since its debut in January 2012, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele has been steadily gaining traction among viewers and critics. The third season, which ended in December, averaged 2 million viewers an episode. The online versions of their sketches have also been a hit for Comedy Central, claiming nine out of the top 10 spots on their YouTube channel. Even President Obama is a fan, telling Jimmy Fallon in April 2012 that he had seen their “Obama Loses His S**T” sketch and that it was “pretty good stuff.”
Now series creators Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are parlaying their success into a fourth season of the show, which will consist of 20 original episodes and two “best of” compilations. Even more exciting, they have been given a development deal to adapt two of their characters into an animated series. Based on a sketch about TSA agents/comedy critics Vandaveon ...

firehose'The closest I came to meeting The Man at SXSW this year is David Berkowitz, the chief marketing officer of digital agency MRY. Berkowitz is a longtime marketing executive who once worked at the firm responsible for the Super Bowl Oreo tweet. He started coming after Twitter blew up in 2007, and has returned every year since. Berkowitz agrees the festival is changing. "More and more it’s faded — not unlike how CES has faded — from being a show about product launches to being a show about meeting people and learning from others," he says. But the brands can’t get enough: "Our clients are sending more and more people, and they’re getting out, they’re taking meetings."
And Berkowitz likes the carnival aspect of it all. The sessions inside may not be what they once were, but there’s plenty of good that comes from introducing young startups to more established businesses. SXSW is a place where deals are forged. "It’s more about creating opportunities," he says. "There’s a great symbiosis. You have the suits walking around with their checkbooks, and that’s appealing. It’s a marketplace — and the bazaar here keeps getting better and better."
Meanwhile, the sort of folks who decamped to Austin each spring are now traveling instead to festivals like Portland’s XOXO, which bills itself as "an experimental festival celebrating independently produced art and technology." It is run, not coincidentally, by Andy Baio.
The reconfigured SXSW shows few signs of slowing down, even though many attendees say they no longer purchase badges and instead meet away from the official panels. Downtown Austin is lovely in the spring, and who’s to tell them all to leave? The music portion of the show is only getting bigger; this year Apple is sponsoring a festival, bringing Coldplay and Pitbull in to perform. If that offends the sensibilities of the tech elite, well, they all moved years ago.
So sit back and enjoy the show. Get high on hashtags and enjoy your digital cronut. "The purists are pissed, I’m sure," Berkowitz says. "But it’s not going back."'

OK, but this tho.

An exclusive report from Variety has the shortlist of hot dudes whom director J.J. Abrams is looking over as he decides whose career he will destroy with the lead role in a Star Wars film. Abrams has actors like Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons and Downton Abbey’s Ed Speelers lined up like so many pieces of meat. According to Variety, Abrams is “eyeing” these actors carefully before he chooses which performer will be remembered for nothing but a spaceships-and-lasers movie for the rest of his life. Attack The Block star John Boyega is also among the men whose lightsaber-gripping skills Abrams will evaluate, as are legitimate theater actors Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher. While the search is ongoing, these five fellows are supposedly the top candidates to be plucked from semi-obscurity, launched to global stardom, and swiftly returned to semi-obscurity again.
Hayden Christensen was available for comment.

Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin story starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard and Garret Hedlund as Hook has potentially found its Tiger Lilly. If negotiations work out, the iconic role of the young Native American princess will be played by none other than Irish-Italian actress Rooney Mara. The film is being billed as a “new take on the classic story,” and in this case, that “new take” extends the old tale of Hollywood whitewashing characters of color. (Recently, Johnny Depp tried to skirt controversy by being “formally adopted” by the Comanche Indians before playing Tonto in the Lone Ranger film.)
According to The Wrap, “Wright is planning to create a world that [is] very international and multi-racial, effectively challenging audiences’ preconceived notions of Neverland and reimagining the environment.” Given that Jackman, Hedlund, and Mara are all white, that could be a hint that Peter Pan himself will be played by ...
