Lesbian presents herself at church to be stoned

by Abraham

Atlah World Missionary Church has made headlines a time or two with the ridiculous, attention-whoring messages they write on their marquee. They seem to have started out with an anti-Obama agenda…

Antigay Church - 02

Then they blended their antipathy toward Obama with their extreme homophobia in this bizarre display…

Antigay Church - 03

And finally, in their latest gimmick, they went full-on antigay, claiming that the best response to homosexuality is a good, old-fashioned stoning. You know, like Jesus would do…

Antigay Church - 04

Perhaps recognizing the riskiness of saying outright that people should still be stoned, they modified their sign to be only infinitesimally less offensive…

Antigay Church - 01

It was when this latest version of the sign was posted that local lesbian Jennifer Louise Lopez decided to address them in person. And what better way to do so than to simply take them up on their offer…

The only camera to make it to the moon and back sells at auction for $910,000

by Vlad Savov

Terukazu Fujisawa, founder of Japan's Yodobashi Camera retail chain, is the proud new owner of a unique piece of photographic history: a Hasselblad 500 camera that was used on the moon during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. The Japanese collector won a hotly contested auction with a bid of 550,000 euros, which together with a premium for the auctioneers' expenses brings its total price to 660,000 euros or just over $910,000.

Though it isn't the first Hasselblad to reach the moon — Neil Armstrong had one with him on the first manned lunar mission in 1969 — this auction item is special in the fact that it's returned to Earth. As Hasselblad's website explains, the other cameras used on the surface of the moon have been left there due to their bulk and weight, with the Apollo astronauts keeping only the film magazines.

Out of this world and back again

The auction for the historic camera started at 80,000 euros and was expected to close at somewhere around 200,000 euros, making the eventual price paid something of a surprise. It illustrates a flourishing enthusiasm for photographic collectibles, which was reiterated by the 102,000 euros paid for a 1950s print of Wanda Wulz's "Io + Gatto" double exposure, one of the earliest and most famous selfies ever taken.

This is an anatomically-realistic 3D brain visualization depicting real-time source-localized activity (power and “effective” connectivity) from EEG (electroencephalographic) signals. Each color represents source power and connectivity in a different frequency band (theta, alpha, beta, gamma) and the golden lines are white matter anatomical fiber tracts. Estimated information transfer between brain regions is visualized as pulses of light flowing along the fiber tracts connecting the regions.

Dear #CongressOccupied Protesters, ‘Don't Let Taiwan Become the Next Hong Kong’

Political Satire of the economic way China is buying Hong Kong and Macau and Taiwan by 阿塗 (Atu). CC: NC.

Political satire of the economic way China is buying Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan by 阿塗 (Atu). CC: NC.

As the political and economic influence of China continues to grow in the world, marginal Chinese communities in the Asia-Pacific region such as Hong Kong and Taiwan find themselves sharing a similar sentiment toward the mainland. On one hand, they are eager to enter the large market there, but on the other, they are afraid of communist China possibly interfering in their domestic democratic politics.

The ongoing protest occupying Taiwan's legislature against the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement with China, which began March 18, 2014, has won a lot of support from Hong Kong, which has seen the looming Beijing government restrict its democratic development. The city has its own trade deal with mainland China, the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), and has experienced the adverse effects of economic partnership and the inflow of mainland capital, such as the rocket-surging property price.

To express their support for the Taiwanese protesters and warn them against the political interference that comes with economic cooperation, a Facebook page called “See Hong Kong in Taiwan” set up an event page, “Hong Kong people support Taiwan against service trade agreement“, for Hong Kong people to leave messages for Taiwanese protesters. Below is a selection of messages translated into English.

Lunyeah Wong wrote:

“Hong Kong has vanished after signing CEPA and Taiwan will vanish after signing service trade agreement.” Taiwanese, don't let Taiwan become the next Hong Kong.

Ka Shing Li commented:

Present-day Hong Kong does not look familiar to me anymore. The government does not care about public opinions, and they just want to sell Hong Kong for their own good. After CEPA was signed with China, we common Hongkongers have not tasted the fruit of it. Our salaries statistically have not gone up, while inflation surges. Cases of money laundering and corruption are becoming more and more serious. Our living space has become more and more dense (Maybe Taiwan will have more space because there is a strait between Taiwan and China). This is why I support Taiwan. Learn from our experience.

Po Lui warned:

Every day people report how Hong Kong has changed on Facebook. I am sad to read that. Do we still have freedom and rule of law?

This is why I think Taiwan should not choose to become the next Hong Kong. I love the friendly atmosphere in Taiwan. In Taiwan, small businesses can survive. What about Hong Kong? Small businesses can not afford to rent a place. The rent is so expensive that only big businesses have the money to pay it.

The Service Trade Agreement is a deal that will make Taiwanese lose its sovereignty. This deal cannot do any good for the local Taiwanese. It also will hurt the cultural and friendly atmosphere in Taiwan.

Jocelyn Yiu encouraged the Taiwanese:

你們不要放棄, 不要讓台灣變成第2個香港, 不要讓內地人指著你們的鼻子說: 沒有中國, 你們早就完蛋了 這些廢話。

Don't give up. Don't let Taiwan become the next Hong Kong. Do not let the mainlanders point at your nose and say nonsense like, “Without China, it's game over for you.”

‘Business is politics’

Chan Hoi Yan wrote:

The failed experiment in Hong Kong proves that it is necessary to “resist China”.

In China, everything will become politics. Doing business is politics. Immigration is politics. Studying is politics. Marriage is politics. Even water and electricity supply [to Hong Kong] is politics. After all, the Chinese communists use every possible channel for their colonization. The huge population itself is China's greatest weapon.

Desmond Sham argued:

You won't die without China's market. The fantasy that you will gain something from the Chinese market and give up yourself in the process is the starting point of dying.

Josephine Lui said:

I've witnessed how Hong Kong was returned to China and the fall of Hong Kong.

My Taiwanese friends, you should not let the Service Trade Agreement be passed sloppily. You must review the agreement clause-by-clause and reject any unequal agreement. You need to be extremely careful about the items related to immigration policy and freedom of speech.

In my view, this trade deal is economic invasion, a way for China to buy up Taiwan. The usual strategy that the Chinese Communist Party has applied to Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong is through economic invasion and colonization.

Kay Lam wrote:

Hongkongers have been cheated by the Chinese Communist Party over and over again. Despite the fact that the Sino-British Joint Declaration is a recognized international agreement, the Chinese Communist Party does not keep its word. According to the so-called Hong Kong Basic Law, Hong Kong could have universal suffrage in 2007/2008, but it has been delayed again and again. Now, we have realized that they won't allow us to have genuine universal suffrage until 2017 or 2020.

DO NOT BELIEVE ANY PROMISE THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY MAKES!

‘Protect democracy. Support Taiwan’

Albert Ting wrote:

I hope this protest in Taiwan can fire up Hongkongers’ determination to pursue democracy. (Although, I know most Hongkongers only care about money and no one is willing to sacrifice themselves.)

Yu Fung said:

Protect democracy. Support Taiwan.
I believe that there is a better future for Hong Kong.
Let us encourage each other.

Francis Wong wondered:

What I do not understand is why President Ma Ying-Jeou did not respond to the protesting students and chose to ignore the opinions of citizens, just like the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. We Hongkongers did not elect the Chief Executive, so it is not surprising to find him ignore public opinions. However, President Ma Ying-Jeou was elected by Taiwanese, and should understand that he should serve the Taiwanese.

Mista Noeleon wrote:

Any country that searches for economic growth must take care of the local businesses first, and the trade deal should include equal term for both sides. The government should listen to people's opinions, and it should not autocratically sign a trade deal before letting people know the contents. Add oil, my Taiwanese friends.

Crunchyroll now on PS Vita ⊟

Originally announced in the middle of last year, the Crunchyroll app for PS Vita is now available on PSN. If you’re even less familiar with Crunchyroll than me, it’s a free or subscription-based service that allows you to watch streaming anime, with a surprisingly good selection. It’s where I’ve seen the, like, four episodes of Attack on Titan I’ve had time to watch.

You need a paid Premium subscription to use the app (like Hulu Plus), but there’s a free trial available, and there’s also a nice selection of sample shows you can watch without even a login. Cool!

Other new video apps include NHL Game Center Live and Qello Concerts.

You might think that in a world of Google and Wikipedia, people who love technology wouldn't care much about the musty old local public library. But, according to a new report by the Pew Research Internet Project, you'd be wrong.

Pew has been studying the changing role of libraries in America in the digital age. Its first report, published in January 2013, looked at how libraries are trying to refocus services to meet the needs of tech-savvy patrons. The second report examined what people expect from libraries now and in the future.

In its latest study, Pew set out to determine what types of people use and value public libraries. It compared highly engaged, "library lovers" and "information omnivores" to those who have never used a library, people dubbed "distant admirers" and "off the grid." According to Pew, 30 percent of Americans are in those first two categories. Another 39 percent are considered to have "medium engagement" with libraries, even though only half of those have used a library in the past year.

Not surprisingly, library lovers, information omnivores and those with medium engagement hold favorable attitudes about libraries. They tend to be better educated, have higher incomes and are more involved in social and cultural activities than people with little or no engagement with libraries.

That doesn't mean that poor people don't care about libraries. In fact, low income adults who have used a library in the last year are more likely to place a high value on the services offered there (think job hunting, access to computers and maybe even just staying warm). Families with minor children are also significantly more likely to use libraries, the study finds.

But the Pew study finds that the most highly engaged library users are also big technology users. Those "information omnivores"? Libraries tend to be part of a mix of information resources that they regularly dip into. Ninety percent of them are online every day; 95 percent have a cell phone or smart phone; 46 percent use a tablet computer and 33 percent own e-readers. In other words, they may have a world of information at their fingertips, but they still can't resist the discreet charms and hushed atmosphere of their favorite library.

Apple wants its own path on Comcast network for video service, WSJ says

by Jon Brodkin

via Russian Sledges

Apple

Apple is negotiating with Comcast in an attempt to create "a streaming-television service that would use an Apple set-top box and get special treatment on Comcast's cables to ensure it bypasses congestion on the Web," The Wall Street Journal reported today. The usual "people familiar with the matter" revealed the companies' plans, which would involve streaming live and on-demand TV programming to an Apple set-top box, presumably the Apple TV.

If accurate, Comcast would have to be careful not to violate network neutrality obligations. The Federal Communications Commission's rules against Internet service providers giving special treatment to specific Web services were vacated by a court decision, but Comcast still has to follow the rules until 2018 because of commitments it made in exchange for gaining approval of its acquisition of NBCUniversal in 2011.

Comcast recently obtained payment from Netflix in exchange for a direct connection to its network. This was allowed because the net neutrality obligations cover only the "last mile," the path from Comcast facilities to consumer homes.

The businessman who sits on his cell phone to avoid wiretapping...

Turkey - The other day, a friend of mine told me this anecdote about his meeting with a famous constructor.

“We took our seats. I put my mobile on the table. He gave me my mobile and said ‘Take this and sit on it.’ I did not understand. ‘What am I going to sit on?’ I asked. ‘Sit on the telephone. This is how I do it. That way they cannot listen,’ he said. He sat on his own telephone. I just put it in my pocket, without him seeing. He was relieved and only then could we continue to speak.” As you might understand, we are now passing through a period of time when people sit on their phones. (more)

Same-Sex Marriage Halted in Michigan For Now

On Friday, Michigan became the latest state to have a judge rule its ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. State Attorney General Bill Schuette quickly responded by filing an emergency motion to appeal U.S. District Judge Bernard Friendman's decision. But, in the early hours of Saturday, around 100 same-sex couples took advantage of the opportunity to marry. By Saturday afternoon, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ordered Michigan to halt same-sex marriages until it had fully considered Schuette's appeal. The stay will last until at least Wednesday, the court said.

In The News: Preserving Audio For The Future Is A Race Against Time : NPR

by Beth
firehose

via A

The Library of Congress’ efforts to preserve audio materials is highlighted on NPR today. Find the full story online.

“We’re probably acquiring between 50 and 100,000 a year,” DeAnna says. “We’re at least stabilizing them in a good environment so that their deterioration will slow down, and we’ll hopefully get to most of them before they’re lost.”

Many already have been lost, according to in 2010. Radio recordings, which the study calls “an irreplaceable piece of our sociocultural heritage” (we’re flattered), were rarely kept for safekeeping before the 1930s. At commercial record companies, master recordings of musical artists were sometimes thrown out due to space constraints.

And once recordings are made digital, they’re still at risk of being lost. Unless the digital format is updated consistently, it might not be recognized by a computer in 10 years. Modern recordings that were “born digital” — think songs streamed on Myspace — are especially ephemeral and at risk of being lost, the Library of Congress study says.

“It’s an active process, not a passive process,” DeAnna says. “It’s not like putting something on the shelf.”

Gang plans mass-producing ATM skimmers via 3D printing?

firehose

via Bunker.jordan

3D printers can print out any objects you can design, and they are getting less expensive and more common every day. As you can probably imagine, it didn't take long for controversial uses to emerge for 3D printers. Criminals start using 3D printing to make better ATM skimmers, a device that fits onto, around or into an ATM's own card slot.

This article Gang plans mass-producing ATM skimmers via 3D printing? is first published at 3ders.org.
