Leica's new camera is a stunning work of aluminum art

by Dan Seifert

Earlier today, Leica unveiled its new Leica T camera system. It's an all-new mirrorless camera platform with a distinctly different design than anything Leica has produced before. Leica had a little help along the way: the company called upon Audi's design team to work on the project, and the final result looks very similar to an iPhone or other modern, unibody metal smartphone.

We'll be reviewing the new Leica T in the coming weeks, but until then, peruse the images below for looks at the camera, its lenses, accessories, and the manufacturing process that goes into making the Leica T.

Consumers Not Impressed With 3D Printing

by Unknown Lamer
Lucas123 (935744) writes "Putting a 3D printer beside the coffee maker in every home, as some manufacturers hope will happen someday, is a long ways from reality as consumers today still don't understand how the technology will benefit them, according to a new study. The study, by Juniper Research, states that part of the problem is that killer applications with the appropriate eco-system of software, apps and materials have yet to be identified and communicated to potential users. And, even though HP has announced its intention to enter the 3D printing space (possibly this fall) a massive, mainstream corporation isn't likely to change the market."

Portland Has More Video Rental Stores than Washington, DC

by Alison Hallett

DCist recently ran an article about the closing of the last "proper" (read: non porn) video rental store in DC, an outpost of a regional chain called Potomac Video that started in 1981.

By my count—not including the Fat Cobras of the world—Portland has at least seven six: the venerable Movie Madness (never close!), four three Videorama locations, Clinton Street Video, and the beloved Video Lair in Sellwood (if you're in the market for a great argument against teaching literacy to children, read their Yelp reviews!).

Depending on what sort of mood you're in this morning, I suppose that's either evidence of a culturally engaged populace that supports local businesses, or an obvious consequence of the fact that Portlanders have more free time to sit around watching movies than the people making government in DC.

Either way, it's striking that so many local stores have hung on this long, even as at-home streaming options grow ever more convenient. When Video Verité on N MIssissippi closed a couple years ago, Erik Henriksen spoke with the store's owner, Marc Mohan (now the lead film critic at the Oregonian), about the challenges facing video stores these days; it's worth a read, if you're interested in the subject. I'll leave you with a gloomy quote from Mohan:

It always seemed obvious to me that the mainstream chain stores would be the first to go, and that proved to be the case. Independent stores, which catered to a more film-literate clientele, are the last holdouts, but now they are riding off into the digital sunset as well."

John Hilgart is the creator and curator of 4CP, a fantastic website that “adventures deep inside” and examines the four-color-process that is used to print comic books. By scanning and zooming in on different comic book illustrations, John is able to display a whole new level of detail that one may not notice otherwise. According to John, “one of the most glorious and ludicrous covers in comic book history” is the MAD #21 cover created by cartoonist and editor Harvey Kurtzman in 1955. You can dig around through more of his many hidden comic treasures on the 4CP website.

Pastor’s hilariously inappropriate question to ask yourself before talking about adopted kids

by Joey White

Seattle area pastor Jesse Butterworth and his wife Marisa have three children — two biological and one adopted. Like many adoptive parents, they’ve heard numerous cringeworthy questions about their adopted child. So they came up with a funny and bizarre rule of thumb that you might not have expected to hear from a pastor, but it works surprisingly well.

Before you ask that question you have about an adoption, ask yourself this question…

Reviewed: New Identity and Uniforms for Arkansas Razorbacks by Nike

by Armin

"If only (Nike) would resist the urge to put spiky left-sided serifs on everything their work would be so much better."

Full Frontal Hog

New Identity and Uniforms for Arkansas Razorbacks by Nike

Competing in the NCAA's Division I in the Southeastern Conference, the Arkansas Razorbacks are the 19 sports teams of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. As with any large American college, the fans are rabid about their teams and crazy about their iconography. A new identity, designed by Nike's Graphic Identity Group, has been designed around the existing hog.

Arkansas and Nike collaborated on a nearly two-year brand evolution program to enhance and modernize the celebrated marks of the University, honoring the pride and rich tradition of academics and athletics, and the key attributes of the Arkansas brand. With the goal of developing an innovative and modern athletics brand identity while simultaneously recognizing the value of university's history and tradition, Arkansas and Nike worked with student-athletes, coaches, administrators and alumni to compile input on the department's brand attributes.

Sampling of old and existing look.
Equity has been built in the Razorback logo since its inception in 1910 when University of Arkansas students voted to change the official mascot from the Cardinal to the Razorback. While the primary Hog logo will remain unchanged, the secondary logo and typography will receive some refined updates consistent with Razorback Athletics attributes - Pride, Tradition, Responsibility, Competition, Relentless, Dedication, Passion and Fight.

Razorbacks press release

Nike and Razorbacks honchos explain the identity.
To complement the primary mark, a forward-facing Razorback has been designed to use as a secondary mark for the entire Razorback program. The logo is valiant and intimidating, and serves as a contemporary representation of the Razorbacks' straightforward style of play. Through these brand identity updates, the University of Arkansas creates separation and distinction in the marketplace while respecting the past and representing the future.

Primary (same as before), secondary (new), and tertiary (same as before) marks.

The new forward-facing hog is a nice addition and complement to the running hog, although they seem to come from slightly different litters. The front view is almost exactly the face of the side view but not quite. I'm not trying to just be a pain in the ass in these Nike rebrands by pointing out minor things but, in this case, you either go with a full facsimile of the features — tusk shape, eyes, ears, etc. — or you do a clearly different rendition. Nonetheless, it's a good addition (as you'll see in the uniforms).

Type tells a story. The right typeface, used consistently, builds character. To assist in creating a consistent look for a wide variety of athletics communications, custom wordmarks for "Arkansas" and "Razorbacks" have been designed to enhance the overall brand.

The Razorbacks script was designed as a nod to the heritage of the sports of baseball and softball at Arkansas. Inspired by the fluid stroke of handwriting, the script is a modern rendition of a classic baseball look. The letterforms in the script are consistent with the design language in the primary typography and wordmarks, putting a contemporary twist on a traditional element of baseball and softball uniforms.

New identity microsite

New wordmarks. Bottom set are the "script" wordmarks.

Of all the Nike wordmarks we've seen, this is one of the most interesting sets. (If only they would resist the urge to put spiky left-sided serifs on everything their work would be so much better). They have solved the multiple-diagonal kerning problems brought on by the abundance of "R"s and "K"s by slicing into the letters, creating a razor-sharp look. I'm not saying the approach or execution is perfect, but at least there is a slightly new way of treating the college sports clichéd type. Now, about that "script" wordmark: no, thank you. An "A" for effort in daringness to attempt a hybrid of a script and a spiky sans but the resulting shapes are extremely awkward and unbalanced; the elongated structure has no relationship anymore with the originals and, well, there is nothing really scripty about it. It's just the original wordmark, tilted, scaled vertically, and slightly adjusted.

Uniforms.

Then there are the uniforms, where Nike manages to make all the elements work great — even, perhaps, the script wordmark. (Okay, maybe not). One detail I would like to call attention to is the stitching on the next to last image above: I really like how they did a beefy stitch that gives the letters and numbers an embossed stroke. Also of note are the numerals and secondary, condensed "ARKANSAS" lettering on the back of the football jersey — how nice is that? Simple, straightforward, and clean. No spikes. Overall, another improved package with the usual logo/wordmark pratfalls of Nike's Graphic Identity Group.

Vectors from coarse motion estimation

by Liz Upton
firehose

proto-kinect with pi

Liz: Gordon Hollingworth, our Director of Software, has been pointing the camera board at things, looking at dots on a screen, and cackling a lot over the last couple of weeks. We asked him what he was doing, so he wrote this for me. Thanks Gordon!

The Raspberry Pi is based on a BCM2835 System on a Chip (SoC), which was originally developed to do lots of media acceleration for mobile phones. Mobile phone media systems tend to follow behind desktop systems, but are far more energy efficient. You can see this efficiency at work in your Raspberry Pi: to decode H264 video on a standard Intel desktop processor requires GHz of processing capability, and many (30-40) Watts of power; whereas the BCM2835 on your Raspberry Pi can decode full 1080p30 video at a clock rate of 250MHz, and only burn 200mW.

Grodon

Because we have this amazing hardware it enables us to do things like video encode and decode in real time without actually doing much work at all on the processor (all the work is done on the GPU, leaving the ARM free to shuffle bits around!) This also means we have access to very interesting bits of the encode pipeline that you’d otherwise not be able to look at.

One of the most interesting of these parts is the motion estimation block in the H264 encoder. To encode video, one of the things the hardware does is to compare the current frame with the previous (or a fixed) reference frame, and work out where the current macroblock (16×16 pixels) best matches the reference frame. It then outputs a set of vectors which tell you where the block came from – i.e. a measure of the motion in the image.

In general, this is the mechanism used within the application motion. It compares the image on the screen with the previous image (or a long-term reference), and uses the information to trigger events, like recording the video or writing a image to a disk, or triggering an alarm. Unfortunately, at this resolution it takes a huge amount of processing to achieve this in the pixel domain; which is silly if the hardware has already done all the hard work for you!

So over the last few weeks I’ve been trying to get the vectors out of the video encoder for you, and the attached animated gif shows you the results of that work. What you are seeing is the magnitude of the vector for each 16×16 macroblock equivalent to the speed at which it is moving! The information comes out of the encoder as side information (it can be enabled in raspivid with the -x flag). It is one integer per macroblock and is ((mb_width+1) × mb_height) × 4 bytes per frame, so for 1080p30 that is 120 × 68 × 4 == 32KByte per frame. And here are the results. (If you think you can guess what the movement you’re looking at here represents, let us know in the comments.)

blamenuttall

Since this represents such a small amount of data, it can be processed very easily which should lead to 30fps motion identification and object tracking with very little actual work!

Go forth and track your motion!
