Extended Donald Sterling recording includes more horrific racism

by Tom Ziller

Deadspin has posted a longer version of the Donald Sterling tape. It includes lots more racism.

Late Friday, TMZ released its nine-minute recording of a man alleged to be Clippers owner Donald Sterling making racist comments to his girlfriend about her being seen with black people. Deadspin has acquired and posted a longer recording of that same conversation -- a 15-minute tour through the mind of a horribly racist NBA team owner.

Deadspin has also included a transcript that's well worth digesting. It's all so bad that finding the worst bit is difficult. But this is a primary candidate, at least as it relates to the NBA:

[Girlfriend]: Do you know that you have a whole team that's black, that plays for you?

[Sterling]: You just, do I know? I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have-Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?

I think David West said it best on Saturday:

Sterling basically articulated Plantation Politics...Make money off the Bucks/Lay with the Women/No Association in Public good or bad

— David West (@D_West30) April 26, 2014

The discussion between Sterling and his girlfriend also turns international, and Sterling defends his treatment of minorities based on how black Jews are treated in Israel. (Sterling is Jewish.) The Holocaust is also discussed, as well as whether Matt Kemp is light-skinned enough to appear on the girlfriend's Instagram account.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver promised a speedy investigation on Saturday. The existence of a second tape from a second source might speed that up.

Digging up meaning from the rubble of an excavated Atari landfill

by Kyle Orland
firehose

'Another way you could view it, though, is that some guys with cameras hired some garbage men to dig up a bunch of 31-year-old junk they knew was there, and that no one wanted even when it was new.'

Gaming archaeologists found a bunch of buried cartridges... but did they find a meaningful story?
Megan Geuss

In a way, yesterday's excavation of Alamogordo, New Mexico's legendary Atari landfill was an important, once-in-a-lifetime moment in video game history. The dig confirms a story that has taken on nearly mythical status in the annals of a still-young video game industry—a powerful physical reminder of the hubris of the company that was on top of the world in 1982 and at the bottom of the literal and metaphorical landfill by September of 1983.

There's another way you could view it, though: some guys with cameras hired some garbage men to dig up a bunch of 31-year-old junk they knew was there and that no one wanted even when it was new.

The truth is, there's always been a divergence between the legend of the Atari landfill and the historical facts behind it. The basic existence of the trove of Atari trash that was found yesterday was well-confirmed by contemporaneous news stories at the time. That includes the oft-cited piece in the paper of record, The New York Times, which even includes confirmation from an Atari spokesperson. The actual reason for the dumping seems to be a simple "unsold goods" tax write-off when Atari closed a west Texas plant in order to move manufacturing overseas.

S. Korea Prime Minister Offers Resignation Over Ferry Sinking

South Korea's prime minister says he will resign over the ferry disaster that left more than 300 people dead or missing — and left the victims' families in anguish for days, as fruitless rescue attempts were made.

Chung Hong-won also apologized to a country increasingly angry over the handling of the sinking and for lax regulatory enforcement that authorities say contributed to the accident.

The New York Times reported:

"A somber-looking Mr. Chung accepted the criticism on Sunday when he offered 'an apology to the people' during a nationally televised news conference. 'When I saw the people's sadness and fury, I thought it was natural for me to step down with an apology,' he said."

"During the search process, the government took inadequate measures and disappointed the public," Chung said, according to CNN. "I should take responsibility for everything as the prime minister, but the government can assume no more. So I will resign as prime minister."

Power in the South Korean political system is held mainly by the president, Park Geun-hye, so this resignation is more symbolic, the Associated Press reported. The AP reports a presidential spokesperson has said Park will accept the resignation.

"Chung was heckled by relatives and his car was blocked when he visited a shelter on an island near the site of the sinking a week ago," the AP said.

The ferry Sewol sank off the southwest coast of the Korean peninsula on April 16. Most of the 476 people on board were high school students on their way to a resort island. The cause of the disaster is still under investigation.

The Revolving Door Between Google And The Department Of Defense

great

"What is slightly surprising — and a bit disturbing — is that Weslander Quaid, Google’s liaison with the military, is now using Google’s big data knowhow to help the Republican Party win elections.

Voter Gravity isn’t just some neutral campaign tech company. It was set up by Ned Ryun, a rightwing Christian and an anti-union activist. In 2011, he came to Wisconsin to support Governor Scott Walker’s jihad on public sector workers.

As much as Ryun cares about protecting the taxpaying public from greedy government workers, I have a feeling that he doesn’t mind that his partner Weslander Quaid’s main job function at Google is to siphon as many taxpayer tech contract dollars for the benefit of her company’s shareholder and executive class."

and more

Google has aggressively intensified its campaign to carve out a bigger slice of the lucrative military-intelligence contracting market.

'Prolific' Tide Laundry Detergent thief arrested

firehose

NYT: 'Tide bottles have become ad hoc street currency, with a 150-ounce bottle going for either $5 cash or $10 worth of weed or crack cocaine. On certain corners, the detergent has earned a new nickname: “Liquid gold.” The Tide people would never sanction that tag line, of course. But this unlikely black market would not have formed if they weren’t so good at pushing their product.'

Why Coffee Shops Love Your Iced Coffee Habit

firehose

'A: The last way to make iced coffee is a popular method called cold-brewing in which coffee is steeped at a room temperature instead of being brewed hot. It requires patience and planning. The process takes half a day, Imbibe magazine explained and also creates a different flavor. Sitting around in room temperature water for 12 hours allows the flavors to mellow out, and the resulting coffee is generally sweeter than if you hot-brewed it.

Q: That sounds like a lot of work.

A: Yeah, that's the reason people go with buying it from a coffee shop.'

y'all are the stupidest motherfuckers I have seen in a long time

It mostly boils down to "we're too lazy to make our own because we always do it wrong."

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

zemmer:

randomredux:

"Brozen," "Bronies," what it all means is "I am so insecure about what I like that I MUST rebrand it as masculine before associating with it."

i read it more as “i hate girls and femininity so much that i am insulted at even the idea that i might have something in common with them”. like, i have a very hard time believing that it’s insecurity and not outright hatred that fuels that kind of thing.

someone explain “Broga” to me as well, or is that orthogonal to this?
