Mobile Gaming: Steam In-Home Streaming Enters Open Beta

by Alice O'Connor

By Alice O'Connor on May 1st, 2014 at 1:00 pm.

It'd be criminal not to re-use this image after all the work that was put into it.

A desk bristling with more flight sticks, throttles, wheels, panels, pedals, and gamepads than a space shuttle command deck may be a wondrous sight and shrine to gaming, but there’s a lot to be said for slumping on a sofa in front of a TV or curling up in bed. “But Alice,” I hear you ask, “I don’t want to schlep my PC around and only have a netbook so what ever am I to do?” Dear reader, through the science of computers, you can now easily stream games from your gaming PC to anything in your home that’ll run Steam.

After a while of invitation-only testing, Valve has opened up the Steam In-Home Streaming beta to everyone who opts in.

In-Home Streaming is pretty much what the name suggests. You can use your big beefy gaming PC to run a game then Steam will stream it as video to a lesser device, feeding your control inputs back to the host computer. In short, you should be able to play shiny new games around the home even on your crummy laptop with its integrated graphics. This technology means you’ll inevitably suffer a little bit of input latency, and your two systems need to be powerful enough to handle encoding or decoding the video stream (though Steam’s quite clever about adjusting this).

This isn’t the only way to stream games between devices, of course, but it’s right there in Steam–right there!–and seems pretty slick.

Our Alec and Graham both had a crack at In-Home Streaming back in January. While they suffered a bit from having wonky home networks and slow client computers, they seemed jolly impressed by its potential. Valve have obviously worked on it a lot more since then, with patches coming almost every other day. Let’s see how it is now.

Why Do the Heathen Rage? | SOFT PINK TRUTH | Thrill Jockey

this sounds like it will be amazing

Why Do the Heathen Rage?:

Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics

The Soft Pink Truth is the solo alter ego of Drew Daniel, one half of celebrated Baltimore-based electronic duo Matmos. After a decade of silence in which Daniel concentrated on Matmos and becoming a Shakespeare professor, The Soft Pink Truth is set to release Why Do the Heathen Rage? whose subtitle “Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics” reveals its bizarre agenda as an unrequited love letter to a justly divisive genre. A gleeful queer travesty of black metal’s undying obsession with kvlt authenticity, Why Do the Heathen Rage? is also a formally precise homage executed with a scholar’s obsession. With the guitar chord transcription assistance of Owen Gardner (Teeth Mountain, Horse Lords) and a coven of guest vocalists, including Antony Hegarty and members of Locrian and Wye Oak, Daniel meticulously transposes the riffs, structures and patterns of black metal chestnuts and deep cuts by Darkthrone, Venom, Mayhem, Sarcofago and more into oddly hybrid new forms. Cruising camp absurdity by forcing a sticky tryst between the two mutually incongruous early 90s subcultures of rave and black metal, the results are bracingly strange on first listen, but curiously addictive as the album sinks in.

Imitating the countless black metal albums that begin with ominous intros, the album commences with “Invocation for Strength”, a spoken word track in which a Radical Faery poem used by gay activist Arthur Evans in his classic Witchcraft and the Gay Counterculture is read by Drew Daniel and Antony (Antony and the Johnsons). After this queer hymn, the rhythmic assault begins with an industrial gabber take on Venom’s genre-founding song “Black Metal”, featuring vocals by Baltimore artist Bryan Collins and screams from Daniel. Stark trap beats and rave synths meet two-step house bounce on “Sadomatic Rites,” originally by Beherit, whose electronic opus H418ov21.c was an inspiration to Drew as he was making this album. Adding a witchy twist to an underground metal classic, Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Dungeonesse) lends her smoky, soulful voice to an orgasmic house deconstruction of Sarcofago’s redlight anthem “Ready to Fuck.” After a surprisingly sensitive guitar led intro, “Satanic Black Devotion” erupts with full on screaming vocals from Terence Hannum (Locrian), paired with IDM beats, synthetic banjo, and a rather glaring plunderphonic re-working of a recognizable dancefloor classic. Side Two kicks off with a stark, vogue-ball inspired rethinking of Darkthrone’s “Beholding the Throne of Might”, with whispered vocals from London based free improviser/composer Jennifer Walshe and a spoken interlude from David Serrotte of the vogue ball crew House of Revlon. The goth factor spikes on “Buried by Time and Dust”, in which Daniel’s Matmos partner M.C. Schmidt croaks the lyrics to the vampiric Mayhem original on top of MIDI harpsichord while a moldy 808 drops the “Planet Rock” beat. In an Ouroboric final gesture, the album concludes with a paroxysmic take on “Grim and Frostbitten Gay Bar” by Impaled Northern Moonforest, the parodic fake black metal project of Anal Cunt’s Seth Putnam. A blizzard of snippets of pop, house, crust and metal are shredded and smothered in lo-fi screaming and arctic field recordings, ending the album on suitably contradictory notes of mockery and celebration. The album’s controversial artwork, which will remain redacted for the time being due to the extreme content it portrays, fits those themes as well, depicting a volatile, extremist scene undergoing a long overdue queerification, coming out rich and strange, shiny and pink.

The Soft Pink Truth was started in 2001 when legendary UK house producer Matthew Herbert challenged Drew to “make a house record,” resulting in the project’s slyly funky debut album Do You Party?, which Herbert released on his own Soundslike Records. Daniel has also produced floor-burning remixes for Bjork, Herbert, Grizzly Bear, Dat Politics and many more under The Soft Pink Truth moniker. “Why Do The Heathen Rage?” follows his 2004 release “Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?,” a collection of electronic interpretations of UK punk and American hardcore songs. As a member of Matmos, Daniel continues to break down established norms of experimental and pop music practice by filtering genres through unique and brilliant conceptual lenses, and has established himself as one of the most individualistic electronic musicians of the past several decades.

Disclaimer: Aesthetics and Politics are neither equivalent nor separable. Black metal fandom all too often entails a tacit endorsement or strategic looking-the-other-way with regards to the racist, anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic bullshit politics that (still) pervade the scene, on behalf of either escapist fantasy talk, shaky invocations of art as a crypto-religious path to transcendence, or--the oldest cop out in the book--the quietist declaration that “I just like how it sounds.” Just as blasphemy both affirms and assaults the sacred powers it invokes and inverts, so too this record celebrates black metal and offers queer critique / mockery / profanation of its ideological morass in equal measure. Mixed emotions about a murky, diverse and self-differential scene are all very well, but, as Barack Obama is so fond of saying at press conferences just before legitimizing drone warfare, let’s be clear: No apologies, no excuses, and no escape clauses are hereby offered. Murderers are murderers. No safe space for fascist garbage. The Soft Pink Truth hereby abjures black metal homophobes, racists, and Nazis categorically and absolutely: MAY THIS CURSE BIND! Remember Magne Andreassen!”

Why Do The Heathen Rage:
1. Invocation for Strength
2. Black Metal (Originally performed by Venom)
3. Sadomatic Rites (Originally performed by Beherit)
4. Ready to Fuck (Originally performed by Sarcofago)
5. Stanic Black Devotion (Originally performed by Sargeist)
6. Beholding the Throne of Might (Originally performed by Darkthrone)
7. Let There Be Ebola Frost (Originally performed by An)

Newswire: Eddie Redmayne to play famous trans woman from the early 1900s

by Caroline Siede

Eddie Redmayne has signed on to play Lili Elbe, one of the first people to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. The project is based on David Ebershoff’s novel, The Danish Girl, a fictionalized account of Elbe’s life. According to Deadline, the film will focus on Elbe’s relationship with her wife, artist Gerda Gottlieb. The duo married in 1904, and Elbe famously served as a model for Gottlieb’s paintings. Having lived as a woman on the streets of Paris for years, Elbe underwent one of the first gender reassignment surgeries in 1930, then died of complications from another surgery just a year later. The project reunites Redmayne with his Les Misérables director Tom Hooper.

Numerous attempts have been made to adapt The Danish Girl over the years, and a slew of female stars have been attached to play Gerda—including Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, and Gwyneth Paltrow. As ...

Newswire: Morgan Spurlock to adapt everything that happens in the world, thanks to Associated Press deal

by Mike Vago

The newspaper business may be going the way of the dodo—not to mention magazines, TV, CDs, DVDs, and every other non-cellphone-based medium. But its lifeblood, The Associated Press, will live on to nourish a new form of content provider: Morgan Spurlock. The Super Size Me and One Direction: This Is Us director has signed a deal granting him the right to adapt anything from the AP’s vast reservoir of “broadcast, digital, and mobile content,” into some sort of programming, whether scripted or unscripted, on either the web or TV.

As the AP’s goal is to collect reporting on every subject from every part of the globe, Spurlock has essentially bought the rights to everything that has ever happened, is currently happening, or ever will happen, and he will be making an in-your-face documentary about any and all of it. Expect a forthcoming Synecdoche, New York-type project ...

Amazon has expanded its same-day delivery service in the United States. The web retail giant has added San Francisco, Dallas, and Los Angeles to the list of cities in which the delivery option is available, and has increased the amount of time customers have to order their items in some other regions. The additions mean that Amazon now offers same-day delivery in 12 metropolitan areas.

The company has already tested its same-day delivery capabilities in two of the three new cities, having offered same-day delivery to customers in the San Bernardino area west of LA, and launched its grocery delivery service AmazonFresh in San Francisco. Many other cities in which Amazon same-day delivery was already available have had their deadlines for ordering goods pushed back. Customers in Indianapolis, for example, will now be able to order Amazon items as late as 11:30 AM and expect them to arrive on the same day, where previously they had to place their order by 7 AM to receive the service. These expansions have come at a cost, though — Amazon is forcing customers in New York to place their same-day orders 30 minutes earlier than before, and removing the option of same-day delivery in Las Vegas. The service had been offered in the Nevada city since it was introduced in 2009.

Amazon is removing the delivery option for customers in Las Vegas

The company has also added search filters to make looking for goods that will arrive on the same day of purchase simpler, and reportedly reduced the price of that shipping for Amazon Prime customers. The changes come a week after The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was building up its delivery network. Amazon currently relies upon companies such as UPS and FedEx to deliver its packages, but The WSJ says that by using smaller carriers and its own in-house delivery trucks and drivers,  Amazon could end up competing against the logistics powerhouses.

Google Now for Android will automatically remember where you parked

by Ron Amadeo

Here's a fun new trick that Google just patched into Google Now, the company's card-based personal assistant: it can now keep track of where you parked. While there are plenty of apps out there that can help you remember your parking space, they all require you to open them and save your spot manually. In contrast, Google's parking tracker will save your parking location automatically. First noticed by Android Police, the new feature is part of Google Search 3.4, which is rolling out out to Android devices running 4.1 and above right now.

Google Now automatically detects your parking spot through Android's Activity Recognition system, a feature Google released at Google I/O 2013. Activity Recognition uses a mashup of GPS, Wi-Fi, cell tower location, compass, accelerometer, gyro, and barometer data to try and figure out what the user is doing. By using all the sensor data available to a smartphone, Activity Recognition can detect if the user is walking, driving, cycling, or sitting still, and it can trigger apps to do something when a change is detected. If Google Now detects that the user has gone from driving to walking, the car has most likely been parked, and pinging the GPS to save your location would be a good idea. All of this happens silently in the background without the user having to do anything.

While it might sound like a huge battery drain, preserving battery life is a priority for Activity Recognition. GPS is one of the biggest battery drains in a phone, and Google can do intelligent things like activate GPS if the accelerometer detects that the user is sitting still. The activity recognition comes from precomputed profiles, so the only CPU work the phone is doing is pattern matching (e.g., shaking up and down and going 15 mph is bicycling). If you have an Android device, Activity Recognition is already running on it, provided you opted into Google location services.

"The real reason me and Shantel Christine Jackson @missjackson broke up was because she got a abortion, and I’m totally against killing babies. She killed our twin babies."

Uh ... What the hell, Floyd?

Floyd Mayweather announced via FB that he broke up with a woman bc she got an abortion. Posted ultrasound photo.

— Jessica W. Luther (@scATX) May 1, 2014

Floyd Mayweather is a convicted domestic abuser who has been coddled by sports media because he is a champion boxer.

— Jessica W. Luther (@scATX) May 1, 2014

Mayweather posting that announcement (basically called her a baby killer) plus ultrasound photos on FB is abusive behavior.

— Jessica W. Luther (@scATX) May 1, 2014

Reminder that Floyd Mayweather is interested in owning the Los Angeles Clippers. That seems like a bad idea.

TV Roundtable: Nearly 30 years ago, Max Headroom took viewers 20 minutes into the future

DIY Fig Newtons

via Amy!

DIY Fig Newtons:
Megan Scott of The Joy Kitchen is returning to childhood and remaking Fig Newtons the way they should have been.

Ok. Listen. If you happen to have a quantity of dried figs and would like some fig newtons but a bit nicer, this is a great recipe. Really, really do follow the directions closely, especially the weird bit at the end about shoving the hot cookies into a closed plastic bag. It makes a tremendous difference.

Some notes on this recipe. Where it advocates parchment? Do yourself a favor and use it. It makes a very sticky dough, even after refrigeration, and you will have to flour the hell out of it and treat it gently because it will tear if you so much as try to brush extra flour off with the softest touch. Especially do not try to use your old stiff bristled pastry brush for this task. Tears will follow (you may safely pronounce that in either variation without changing this sentiment one bit).

The cookies spread as they bake, so you want to put a few inches between each bar. Also, they will be ugly. They will be ugly, and they will be lumpy, and you will abandon all hope of snack-verisimilitude, but after you slice them and steam them you will hardly notice.
