You Can Soon Buy Historical Map Engravings From The U.S. Government

From the 1880s to the 1950s, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) published maps depicting transportation routes, cultural borders, topography, hydrography and geologic cross sections. And the stunning handmade engravings used to create these maps will be put on sale for the general public this summer.

Notes on City Club's "Moving Fashion Forward in Portland"

by Marjorie Skinner

I assumed that on Friday, when the City Club of Portland took as its topic "Moving Fashion Forward in Portland," there would be a fair amount of broad strokes with a side of platitudes. Fashion, after all, isn't the usual topic of discussion at these gatherings, and City Club regulars would need some background.

The panelists—former Project Runway contestants Seth Aaron (who won, as well as winning the show's all-stars spinoff) and Becky Ross, Portland Sewing's Sharon Blair, Seth Friedermann of Manufacture New York, Pendleton president Mort Bishop, and David Howitt of the Meriwether Group—obliged where applicable. There were statements about designing "from the heart" emphasis on the "passion" required for an apparel design career, and a reiteration of what has been pointed to as fundamental challenges for pursuing said career in this city: production and funding.

Eventually things started to get down to brass tacks, though it was a far cry from finding any solutions. To me perhaps the most interesting thing about it is to have these issues—which have been bandied about in panel discussions of various types for years—be a subject in this context, getting people who aren't already involved in the industry to even contemplate apparel design as part of the city's cultural capital, as well as a potentially significant economic sector. Head over to MOD for more on the specifics of what was discussed, and/or watch the whole thing yourself via the magic of YouTube:

On average, Americans get 189 cable TV channels and only watch 17

by Megan Geuss

In a blog post on Tuesday, Nielsen reported that on average, US homes receive 189.1 TV channels, but viewers only watch 17.5 of those channels.

The news will appear in Nielsen's forthcoming “Advertising & Audiences Report,” and while the results seem somewhat intuitive, they articulate a very real problem in cable TV—the fact that consumers often feel forced into paying for a lot of TV they never watch.

Nielsen's blog post today showed that the number of cable channels in an average US household has grown dramatically over the last five years, but the number of channels that viewers actually watch has hardly changed at all. In 2008, US households received an average of 129.3 channels but only actually viewed 17.3 channels. In 2013, the number of channels received increased 46 percent, but the number of channels viewed only increased 1 percent.

An Actual Recording Of Arthur Conan Doyle's "Spirit" From A 1934 Séance

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle often wished that he would be remembered for his writings on Spiritualism rather than his Sherlock Holmes novels. That didn't happen. But he would no doubt be pleased that the British Library has provided a unique public service — posting rare recordings of the author, both before and after his death.

thefilmfatale: Due to the limited budget the American cast...

thefilmfatale:

Due to the limited budget the American cast members and crew (including director George Lucas), all decided to fly coach class to England, rather than first class. When Carrie Fisher's mother, Singin’ in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds, heard about this she called Lucas, complaining about how insulting it was for her daughter to be flying coach. Fisher was in the room with Lucas when he took the call, and after a few minutes asked if she could talk to her mother. When Lucas handed her the phone she simply said, “Mother, I want to fly coach, will you fuck off?!” and hung up (x).

Newswire: Surprise, surprise: More women are directing indie films than Hollywood blockbusters

by Katie Rife

The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film released its annual report this week, and—in a shocking twist that absolutely no one saw coming—it turns out the same people who keep making awful, Bechdel-defying crap like Battleship don’t like to hire women behind the scenes either. Only one major studio film being released this summer boasts a female director—Jupiter Rising’s Lana Wachowski—and according to the report, only six percent of the top-grossing films of 2013 were directed by a woman. Those statistics fall in line with previous studies showing that there are fewer women employed in Hollywood production than there were in 1998.

However, the report shows things aren’t quite so bleak on the independent film front. The study concludes that 18 percent of independent features and 28 percent of documentaries that played at film festivals in 2013 were directed ...

D&D, New Pathfinder game at Redditor's SE home.

'We also have a cat, and a hamster, both of which are in the room we would be gaming in.'

I dunno, already sounds like they have a decent party

Hiya, I posted a couple of days ago in /r/lfg/ and have only gotten one bite so far. Would love 1 to 3 more players for a well rounded group.

Location: SE Portland, Lents area.

Pathfinder is the system, which you can find online here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ More than likely we will start with an adventure path, and see where we end up as a group (homebrew is an option in the future.) The 'we' I'm referring to is myself Watyrfall, late 30's, female, and my husband (non-Redditor), early 40's. We also have a cat, and a hamster, both of which are in the room we would be gaming in. We don't drink or smoke, and would prefer to game with people who do not drink or smoke during gaming.

New to Pathfinder? New to D&D? Experienced player? Everyone is welcome. Please message me or reply for more information or with questions. Thanks for reading and have a nice week. :)

edit: Looks like there are two camps; those wanting a day/date, and those hoping for Sundays. I proposed Friday (May 9th) evening to some interested people, and that hasn't gone over so well. Maybe we should try for a Sunday (May 11th) first session?

As far the GM and I are concerned, the day/time that will get players to the game easiest/consistently is the best option. Hopefully we can pull a game together this weekend. :) Thanks for reading.

"Each die starts out as a precisely CNC machined and dimensioned 16mm cube. The edges and corners have a slight radius for ergonomic as well as aesthetic appeal. Luxor dice are balanced by virtue of accurately varying the machined depth of the pips so that each face has the exact same volume of material removed. Each Luxor die is surface honed for beauty on an inspection grade granite surface plate, measured with a precision micrometer, and hand matched with a another die to ensure minimal total pair error. In addition each Luxor die pair comes with a signed specification sheet detailing their dimensions. Due to the amount of effort required to make Luxor dice they are by nature a limited run item made in small batches to ensure quality control and attention to detail. As a result a level of uniqueness is added as each die pair is individually identified by batch and number serialized on the inspection sheet."

NO ROOM FOR MILES MORALES IN EXPANDING SPIDER-MAN MOVIE FRANCHISE, SAY PRODUCERS

By Andrew Wheeler

Sony Pictures is determined to build a superhero franchise to rival that of Marvel Studios on the back of Spider-Man, the only marquee superhero whose film rights the studio owns. Amazing Spider-Man 2, currently in theaters, is the second installment of Sony’s franchise reboot, while movies starring villains Venom and the Sinister Six are in development.

Spider-Man has been good to Sony, and superhero movies are big business, so there’s nothing baffling about the studio’s determination to keep the franchise alive. What is baffling is that they won’t develop one of the franchise’s most interesting characters, confirming they have no interest in a movie about the black Latino Spider-Man from the Ultimate Universe, Miles Morales.

Speaking in a spoiler-filled interview with IndieWire, Spider-franchise producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach unequivocally ruled out the possibility of introducing Morales to their movie universe. Asked if Morales or fellow alt.Spidey’s Ben Reilly (Scarlet Spider) or Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man 2099) might make an appearance in any of the zillion Spidey movies they hope to make, Tolmach replied:

“No.”

The US Government Guide to Shirts Apparently, if the internet...

The US Government Guide to Shirts

Apparently, if the internet were around in the mid-20th century, the US Government would have had a great menswear blog. Not too long ago, our friend CrimsonSox found a US government guide to quality suits, originally published in 1949. Today, he found a government guide to quality shirts, originally published by the US Department of Agriculture in 1939.

Like with the guide to suits, there’s some advice in here that’s still useful and some that’s a bit outdated (although, still fun to read). It’s still true, for example, that dress shirts are generally considered better made if they have mother-of-pearl buttons and fabrics woven in high thread counts. The section on detachable collars, on the other hand, is pretty much useless since shirts almost only come with attached ones these days. Back when this guide was published, men still had a choice between the two, and the advantage of detachable collars was two fold. First, you could just wash the part that most easily got soiled, rather than washing the whole shirt. Second, you wouldn’t have to throw your entire shirt away once the collar got frayed. Those advantages, of course, are pretty much moot as shirts have become cheaper and laundering easier.

My favorite piece of anachronistic advice might be the bit about how men should look for full cut shirts. The guide does make an exception, however. As it notes, “some brands of shirts are made especially for slender men, and should not be confused with cheap, skimped garments.” Thank you, US government, for acknowledging my existence.

Lastly, as with the guide to suits, there’s a nice section in here on fabrics. If you’ve ever wondered what’s the difference between broadcloth, oxford, chambray, etc., this is a good place to start. Just note that madras today mostly refers to the very colorful plaids that come out of India, not the plain stuff shown here.

A Train, Smiling… and?

New Logo for Smile Train by SS+K

(Est. 1999) "Smile Train is an international children's charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate. Millions of children in developing countries with unrepaired clefts live in shame, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is simple, and the transformation is immediate. Smile Train's sustainable model provides training and funding to empower local doctors in 85+ developing countries to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery in their own communities."

Design by: SS+K

Opinion/Notes: With such a cool name I wish the logo were more… something. I mean, yeah, it's a train with a smile. The name already says that but then what? How can you push that? Add to it? Build on it? Nonetheless, it's an unquestionable improvement over the previous logo and it's hard to be upset with such a great charity. Double-nonetheless, they probably deserved a better logo. The little film, though, a knockout!

Select Quote: In addition to announcing the one millionth smile, Smile Train today revealed a new logo and launched a fully integrated marketing campaign. The "Power of a Smile" campaign, which is a departure from traditional marketing efforts by charities, tells the stories of Smile Train patients from their point-of-view and how their lives have been transformed by cleft repair surgery. The campaign includes television, digital, print and social engagement to generate awareness and drive donations. The campaign also features the work of noteworthy talent including City of God director, Katia Lund, and award-winning photographer, Alex Webb.

Atom Is Now Open Source

firehose

via Dmitry Krasnoukhov
"A hackable text editor for the 21st Century"

Today, we're excited to announce that we are open-sourcing Atom under the MIT License. We see Atom as a perfect complement to GitHub's primary mission of building better software by working together. Atom is a long-term investment, and GitHub will continue to support its development with a dedicated team going forward. But we also know that we can't achieve our vision for Atom alone. As Emacs and Vim have demonstrated over the past three decades, if you want to build a thriving, long-lasting community around a text editor, it has to be open source.

What's included?

Much of Atom's functionality is provided by packages, and every Atom package has been open source since the day we launched the beta. Today, we're open sourcing the rest of Atom, which includes the core application, Atom's package manager, and Atom's Chromium-based desktop application framework, Atom Shell.

Atom Core

Atom's core contains the parts of the application that aren't provided by packages. This includes the build system, Atom's global environment, the workspace and panes, and the text editor component. Over time, we've extracted functionality from Atom into libraries that can be used independently, and we expect that process to continue.

Atom Package Manager

Atom's package manager, apm, is a client library and command line utility that facilitates publishing and installing Atom packages. apm is currently powered by atom.io, but we plan on standardizing the backend APIs so that eventually you can host your own registry.

Atom Shell

Finally, we're just as excited to be open-sourcing Atom Shell as we are about Atom itself. Over its 2.5 years of development, Atom has been something of a hermit crab, beginning its life in a Cocoa WebView, then migrating to the Chromium Embedded Framework, and finally making its permanent home inside Atom Shell. We experimented briefly with Node-Webkit, but decided instead to hire @zcbenz to build the exact framework we were imagining.

We've taken great care to integrate Chromium and Node in a clean, maintainable way, including sponsoring the addition of multi-context support in Node. We also created brightray and libchromiumcontent, which make it easier to embed Chromium into native applications as a shared library.

Into the future!

There's still a ton to do before Atom is ready for version 1.0. In the next few months, we'll be focusing on improving performance, releasing on Linux and Windows, and stabilizing APIs. We think being open source will help us get there faster, and more importantly, source access will give you the transparency and control you've told us you expect from your tools.

We'd like to thank everyone who has participated in the Atom beta so far. Your feedback, packages, and pull requests have been invaluable. We wouldn't be building a text editor if we didn't plan on using it for the rest of our lives, and we're excited to take this critical step toward making that a reality.

Billy On The Street and Parks And Recreation star Billy Eichner is bringing his screaming comedy stylings to yet another TV channel. Eichner is teaming up with longtime friend and Billy On The Street writer Julie Klausner to create Different People, a new scripted comedy pilot for USA. Eichner and Klausner will also star in the show, which is described as a comedy about “frustrated comedians and pop culture-loving best friends living in New York City who hate everyone—except each other.” It’s a solid premise, and one that might not actually be too far from real life, if Billy On The Street and Klausner’s podcast, How Was Your Week, are to be believed. Klausner will pen the pilot’s script.

Adding even more clout is executive producer Amy Poehler, an outspoken fan of Eichner’s who even appeared on several episodes of Billy On The Street this ...
