Harvard Library Confirms Book Is Bound With Human Skin

danipretto

gross

skin-bound-book.jpg After numerous tests, scientists have confirmed a copy of French writer Arsene Houssaye's "Des destinees de l'ame" was bound with human skin. *eying picture* Nice skin too -- no moles or beauty marks. You think that was back or buttcheek? It's definitely not chest because no nipple.
According to the library, Houssaye presented the text, described as "a meditation on the soul and life after death," to one of his friends, a book-loving medical doctor, in the mid-1880s. The recipient, Dr. Ludovic Bouland, bound the book "with skin from the unclaimed body of a female mental patient who had died of a stroke," the library said. Bouland left a note in the volume explaining what he had done. "A book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering," he wrote. Although binding a book in another person's skin may seem creepy nowadays, the library says it wasn't always so unusual and reviled. "Termed anthropodermic bibliopegy, the binding of books in human skin has occurred at least since the 16th century," it said. "The confessions of criminals were occasionally bound in the skin of the convicted, or an individual might request to be memorialized for family or lovers in the form of a book."
First of all, the only books that should ever be bound with human skin are volumes of magic spell and/or potions. Every great wizard knows that. Secondly, upon closer inspection I suspect this book might have a rash. You should probably have that looked at. "By a book doctor?" They're called librarians. Thanks to E V I L A R E S, who is so evil he had every book he owns rebound with human skin.

The 3D printing team at AKEMAKE has just unveiled Spirula, the world’s first 3D printed speaker made from 100% wood. Designed in a spiral shape inspired by the deep sea Nautilus and squid, the Spirula is a small and timeless piece that can fit into any home or office environment. In addition to a limited edition of the Spirula that AKEMAKE has produced for purchase online, they’ve also included the specifications and DIY guidelines so that anyone with a 3D printer and filament can print their own at home.

$54.75: The World's Most Expensive Starbucks Drink

danipretto

why?????

most-expensive-starbucks-drank.jpg This is the current world's most expensive Starbucks drink, the $54.75 Sexagintuple Vanilla Bean Mocha Frappuccino, a 128oz (that's a gallon) behemoth with 60 shots of espresso. Twitter user Andrew Chafari got it for free by using his Starbucks gold card. Of course it took making friends with the baristas at Starbucks to make it happen. Some other lady actually managed to order a drink that cost $56.70, but that one is disputed as the most expensive because she didn't bring a cup large enough to fit the whole drink. DISQUALIFIED. Granted pretty much anybody could order the most expensive Starbucks drink if they wanted provided 1) they have a friend who works there and 2) brought in a cup the size of a kiddy pool. I'm going to go this afternoon and order a $600 drink. Then take a picture of the drink and receipt and run. Sure my friend might get fired, but his house parties always suck anyways. Thanks to lib, RosettaStoned and Allyson, who agree if the person in front of you at Starbucks starts ordering the most expensive drink, your only option is to tap them on the shoulder and challenge them to a duel to to the death.

Interior Trend: Into The Wild

by decor8
danipretto

@craig - skip to the bottom for the Anthropologie hanging chair & hammock!

Are you ready to venture into the wild for this trend post? Hi, it’s Gudy again with my June column for decor8. This trend post is different to the ones I have been written so far as you will soon see… Into The Wild is not tangible, it’s not about a piece of furniture or an object you can buy. It embraces a feeling, a way of living, a call back to nature. I’d like to take you on a journey of observing colour, texture and keywords that describe what Into The Wild means to me.

1. into the wild-ashley herrin photography

Photo: Ashley Herrin Photography

Into The Wild describes an urge for taking a break from every day life. It’s about hanging a hammock somewhere outdoors to pause and contemplate. It is a visual response to our need of exploring once again to tap into our inner world, to travel and get lost without wifi and Instagram, no GPS marking our route and plans.

2. into the wild-collage

Photos: Chris Maynard FEATHERS // Aaron Feaver GIRL

3. into-the-wild-keywords

Photos: Dullbluelight BOKEH // GREEN LEAVES // Mokkasin GIRL

There’s romanticism and a strong bohemian vibe underlined by the aesthetics of feathers, flower crowns, French braids, forage materials and tribal patterns. Photos are taken often during the golden hour searching for a softer, blurry look.

4. into the wild-collage

Photos: Kevin Russ Mobile Photography NATIONAL PARK // Taylor Dorrell GIRL WITH CAMERA

Colours are warm and rich, greens, curry, oxid and sunflower yellow, combined with pastel hues such as pale pink and peach. Chocolate brown and black are added to give the right contrast and focus of the ‘wild aspect’ here.

5. into the wild colours

6. into the wild

Photos: The grower’s daughter LEFT // Parker Fitzgerald Photography RIGHT

One of the micro trends included is the caravan revival. They are made for camping and exploration, used as food trucks (you’ll find them on all cool street events these days) or traveling from here to there selling lovely things. TIP: See and follow stylist Kara Rosenlunds journeys, they are so inspiring!

7. into the wild-kara rosenlund

Photo: Kara Rosenlund

When it comes to defining materials, they are all very related to nature but do have a lived-in aspect — imperfect and weathered.

8. into the wild materials

Photo: Pamela Schmieder

As for interior design, let’s talk swinging hammocks, hanging wicker chairs and peacock armchairs, all combined with huge lush indoor plants.

9. into the wild furniture

Photos: Siren Laudal Photography / Styling Kråkvik & D’Orazio LEFT // Anthropologie hanging chair // Anthropologie Hammock

I hope you liked the different approach today. Let me hear your thoughts and what your into the wild experience lately has been.- Warmly, Gudy

The GOODS from Parallel 49 Brewing Company

Vancouver, BC | With summer just around the corner, the team at Parallel 49 Brewing Company has been busy bottling their thirst-quenching brews for patio season 2014. Welcome summer! Adding another craft brew to their seasonal lineup, the East Vancouver brewery is excited to introduce their newest fruity flavour, Tricycle, a refreshing lager blended with ruby red grapefruit juice.

Along with Tricycle, Parallel 49 will be bringing back some craft beer fan-favourites including Banana Hammock, a hefeweizen brewed with wheat, Pilsner malt and German hops with aromas of banana and cloves. And their much-anticipated Belgian style Witbier, Seedspitter, which boasts an effervescent watermelon aroma and crisp dry finish. The craft brewery has also brewed a lager version of their year round Hoparazzi, making it crisp and refreshing for those long, hot summer days in the sun.

“We always get excited about launching our seasonal beer,” said Graham With, head brewmaster at Parallel 49, “Nothing beats sipping on a cold craft beer on a hot summer day and our line-up of seasonal brews are crisp and refreshing.” Details after the jump…

About the Business

WhitneyKrutzfeldtPhotography-Parallel49PrintReadyFiles-26

Parallel 49 Brewing Company is an East Vancouver microbrewery brewing up some of the highest quality craft beers in B.C. With a successful first year and high achievements at last year’s Canadian Brewing Awards, Parallel 49 has recently expanded their sales into the Prairie Provinces as well as Ontario and the U.S. Their unusual but fun and cheeky named brews have become wildly popular among craft beer enthusiasts who enjoy their year round brews including Hoparazzi, Gypsy Tears Ruby Ale and Old Boy. In addition, Parallel 49 offers a variety of highly anticipated seasonal beers including watermelon infused Seedspitter, pumpkin Oktoberfest Schadenfreude, Ugly Sweater Milk Stout, and many others.

Visit Parallel 49’s East Vancouver tasting room and liquor stores across the lower mainland to purchase 12 and 6 pack bottles. Growlers are also available for purchase at the brewery. For more information on their latest brews visit the website here.

PRESS & Accolades

WhitneyKrutzfeldtPhotography-Parallel49PrintReadyFiles-39

“The Parallel 49 Brewing Co. opened on Triumph Street a year ago, and has bubbled up as vigorously as the 30 or so weirdly named beers from its six 5,000-litre and eight 10,000-litre tanks. Weird? How about Banana Hammock? Salty Scot? Lost Souls? Hoparazzi? Ugly Sweater? Schadenfreude? The latter word refers to the pleasure in seeing others fail. That certainly wouldn’t apply to Anthony Frustagli, Nick Paladino, Mike Sleeman and Scott Venema, who own the St. Augustine’s restaurant and craft-beer mecca, and Michael Tod and Graham With who joined them to found Parallel 49.” – Malcolm Parry, The Vancouver Sun

“It’s always exciting to see a new craft beer maker pop up in Vancouver; it’s even more exciting to see a brewery push boundaries, take risks and create new and interesting flavour combinations. Expect to see bold choices coming from Parallel 49 in the future.” – Ryan Tessier, Vancity Buzz

“Having an understanding of the science of brewing has almost certainly enabled Parallel 49 to achieve consistency in its product, even with the brewery in a state of near-constant expansion.” – Jan Zeschky, The Province

Hurricanes With Women's Names Kill More Because People Don't Respect Them As Much, Prepare Properly

danipretto

sad news

hurricane-names-and-sexism.jpg In news that's hard for me to wrap my simple mind around, a recent study has discovered that hurricanes with female names have historically killed more people because folks don't take them as seriously as male-named hurricanes, and don't prepare as well. Wait -- what? What the hell is wrong with people?! You could name a hurricane Little Miss Prissypants and I'm still gonna lock myself in a bomb shelter for the week.
Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning 1950 and 2012. Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 deaths compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities. The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones. "[Our] model suggests that changing a severe hurricane's name from Charley ... to Eloise ... could nearly triple its death toll," the study says. Sharon Shavitt, study co-author and professor of marketing at the University of Illinois, says the results imply an "implicit sexism"; that is, we make decisions about storms based on the gender of their name without even knowing it. "When under the radar, that's when it [the sexism] has the potential to influence our judgments," Shavitt said.
I have to admit, people are stupid. If there is one thing I've learned in life it's to be deathly afraid of women. I would take a guy with a knife pointed at my throat over an angry woman any day of the week -- INCLUDING SUNDAYS. Who are these people who aren't taking female-named hurricanes seriously? Why is Hurricane Nicole not scary enough to get people to take the proper precautions? "Because her last name is Nicole." BUT HER FIRST NAME IS F***ING 'HURRICANE'. Thanks to Allison, who agrees if people aren't smart enough to take a female-named hurricane seriously, it's best to just let Darwin do his thing.

Great Job, Guys: Star Trek Cast Pretending To Experience Shockwave With No Camera Shake

danipretto

hilarious

star-trek-shockwave.gif This is a very short video of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation pretending the Enterprise is traveling through a shockwave, but without any camera effects. They look silly -- especially Riker. "Just pretend you're riding a mechanical bull made for children," I imagine the producers telling him. "And you, Picard -- you're an old lady in the back of a cab." Keep going for the whole video with audio. SPOILER: "SHIELDS AT MAXIMUM, FULL REVERSE." Also, a worthwhile gif of the original Star Trek crew doing the same thing.

You’d hope that better health, lower cost and reduced emissions would be incentive enough to push people out of their cars and onto bikes, but in France only 2.4 percent of the population commutes via bicycle. To encourage the uptake of cycling, the nation has decided to start paying people to bike to work! The transport ministry has teamed up with private companies and institutions to pay employees 25 euro cents for kilometer traveled – which could certainly add up over the course of a year.

archiemcphee:

Russian artist Svetlana Petrova has an awesome marmalade cat named Zarathustra whom she photoshops into famous works of art. No matter the renown of the artist or beauty of the subject matter, Zarathustra’s ample tabby frame immediately becomes the hilarious center of attention. He melts alongside Dalí’s clocks, cuddles up to Vermeer’s milkmaid, da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine and Mona Lisa, and even Whistler’s Mother. We particularly love his use of modesty tail whilst lounging in Edouard Manet’s Olympia and the tip of the tail positioned in place of Adam’s hand in Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.

Petrova is currently exhibiting artwork at The Barn at Stonehill House, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire in a show entitled Russian Extremes – From Icons to I-Cats. The show runs through June 5, 2014.

Follow the ongoing high art hijinks of Zarathustra at Svetlana Petrova’s website, Fat Cat Art.

Luigi's death stare is the best trash talk in sports

by Luke Zimmermann

If Brian McCann were a highway patrolman in the Mushroom Kingdom ...Woo boy.

If you had gone back in time and told a high school version of myself that a plumber from Brooklyn named Luigi Mario would be 2014's greatest athlete, I'd probably have run away terrified. Time travelers are frightening. But say I'd been able to comprehend the brevity of the situation: I'd likely then have scolded you for not properly christening your device the 'Timulator'; that's non-canon.

All Mario nerdery aside, just about all of us lost countless hundreds; thousands; ten of thousands (I'm not embarrassed) of hours to various versions of Mario Kart over the last several decades. The latest iteration, Mario Kart 8, showcases far and away the greatest polygons-to-shade ratio in the history of the franchise, courtesy of a brazen make and model of Luigi that could make even Yasiel Puig blush.

Exhibit A:

But what if Luigi was ... well, a baby. That drives. Because Mario Kart reasons:

What is this I don't even:

(via)

If you still somehow had any doubts as to Luigi 2k14's bonafides:

Finally, it wouldn't be SB Nation if we didn't:

Google Maps Travel By Dragon Easter Egg Option

danipretto

love these

google-maps-travel-by-dragon.jpg So apparently there's an Easter egg in Google maps that suggests traveling by dragon if you're trying to get from Brecon Brecons in South Wales to Snowdon in Wales (links to actual map). Amazingly, the trip is estimated to only take 21 minutes by dragon, and a whopping 3.5-hours via car. That is one fast dragon. How quickly do you think a dragon could get me to the nearest liquor store and back? That was a trick question, because if I call them and tell them I have a fire-breathing dragon, they better f***ing deliver. Keep going for a BONUS travel by Loch Ness Monster screenshot.

Avocado Coconut Popsicles

by Skinnytaste Gina
danipretto

must make these. immediately.

These creamy popsicles are a real treat! Made with just 4 ingredients – nutrient dense avocados, coconut-almond milk, raw sugar and sweetened coconut flakes. They are also dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free.

It’s no secret, I'm pretty avocado obsessed! I grew up eating avocados all my life and I usually incorporate them into a meal just about every day! In fact, I love them so much I created an entire Pinterest Board devoted to avocados. But I usually eat them in some type of savory dish such as guacamole, BLT, egg salad, in my salad dressings, with my soups and more.

But the fact is, in Brazil where my Dad lived for many years, avocados were never eaten with salt; instead they were treated as the fruit that they are and were often sweetened with sugar. My dad used to make a smoothie years ago with avocados, milk and sugar which he called Vitamina. Because I love coconut, I took his smoothie idea and added coconut flakes and loved it! And since avocados are so nutrient dense, you're also getting a good dose of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals to boot!

PS - The popsicle mold I used is from Progressive which I bought on Amazon, click the link if you're interested.

The company is investing $1 billion dollars on a fleet of satellites which will orbit the planet at a lower altitude than most satellites. This will allow Google to reach those who live without internet, who have so far proven difficult to reach.

i forgot somehow that free people has a blog, and a lovely one at that. they post great home tours and style ideas — but today i stumbled upon their beach camp, and was most inspired. doesn’t this look like a heavenly idea for a party or perhaps a bridal shower? free people invited a group of inspiring ladies to gather at the beach in San Onofre, California to enjoy a pretty outdoor picnic, a bit of yoga, and some sun and surf.

free people's beach camp | sfgirlbybay

the West Coast display team from free people transformed the beach into a camping paradise with everything from fresh flowers and drift wood to hand-dyed pillows and seashells. they built the driftwood teepee by stitching it together with crochet rounds and neon string, and made them cozy with a cloud of blankets and handmade pillows. i can practically smell those wildflowers and the breeze from the sea. well done, ladies! this is gorgeous! you can check out the entire posts on free people here and here.

The Oppressed Majority: A Hilarious and Heartbreaking French Short Film about a World in Which Men Are Subject to Sexism

by Maria Popova
danipretto

pretty dark but interesting

A tragicomic day in the life of a man who struggles for equality in a mirror-image society dominated by women.

“Those who travel with the current will always feel they are good swimmers,” NPR science correspondent Shankar Vedantam wrote in his extraordinary exploration of society’s hidden biases, “[and] those who swim against the current may never realize they are better swimmers than they imagine.” That’s precisely what French filmmaker Eleonore Pourriat brings to life with imaginative vividness, elegantly waltzing between the hilarious and the heartbreaking, in her brilliant and pause-giving short film Oppressed Majority — a day in the life of a man who faces subtle sexism and unabashed sexual violence in a mirror-image society dominated by women. Laugh, cry, think twice:

For a deeper look at the serious issue beneath the comic veneer, see Vedantam’s indispensable The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars, and Save Our Lives — a perspective-shifting even, if not especially, for those of us who consider ourselves well-intentioned and are thus most susceptible to unwitting biases.

A total synthesis of (±)-lundurines A and B is described. These natural products have a unique hexacyclic skeleton which includes a cyclopropane-fused indoline. A stereospecific construction of the pentasubstituted cyclopropane core was achieved, by radical cyclization using SmI2, with perfect stereoselectivity. Cyclizations to give seven- and five-membered heterocycles, under palladium and ruthenium catalysis, respectively, accomplished the total syntheses. The late-stage construction of the F ring by ring-closing metathesis enabled access to the title compounds from a spiroindoline intermediate which is a common structure of other kopsia alkaloids.

To the core: The total synthesis of (±)-lundurines A and B is described. One of the key reactions is a SmI2-mediated cyclopropanation, which delivered the core structure with perfect stereocontrol of the quaternary carbon centers. Palladium- and ruthenium-catalyzed cyclizations were also effective for constructing seven- and five-membered heterocycles, respectively, to complete the total syntheses.

SMOKE BREAK #1109 | Furious Austrian Dairy Farmer Declares War Against Red Bull

by Scout Magazine

this is amazing. what's with his accent??

(Language NSFW) An Austrian farmer named Petutschnig Hons saw red when a “show-off” came to his farm to complain about the price of milk with a can of Red Bull in his hand. He got so angry, in fact, that he produced a video rant that ends with him destroying a can of Red Bull with a sledgehammer. Money quote: “Where are your wings, you dirty fucking stupid can?”

Vision Of The Future: Paving The Roads With Solar Panels

danipretto

i wonder if we will ever actually see this. pretty intriguing.

solar-roadways.jpg Because I'm slow like a tortoise sloth, this is an Indiegogo campaign for the production of Solar Roadways, hexagonal solar cells that can be used to replace existing roads, sidewalks, driveways, etc. The solar cells will not only provide clean power to the grid, but also use a small amount of that energy to light embedded LEDs to create the lines on the road, display road warnings, designate parking spots, etc. Plus -- PLUS -- the solar cells will also have a heating element that can melt snow on the surface, preventing the need for snowplows or me throwing my back out trying to shovel my parent's driveway. The whole thing seems like a great idea (and it IS a great idea), I just imagine the cost of implementation is going to be astronomical. Sure that cost would eventually pay for itself in the long-run, but sometimes it's hard to get people to care about the long run -- particularly politicians. In the video they estimate that if all the roads in America were paved in solar cells they would generate 3x the amount of energy the whole country currently uses. That is a lot of clean energy. In this can? A lot of RED BULL energy. *drinking* Oh, nope, that was a cigarette butt. Ugh, you leave your drink alone for one minute. If I could nuke this planet I would, I'm serious. Keep going for an informative video about the possibilities. It's a little intense.

Morgan Freeman On Helium For 'Through The Wormhole'

danipretto

wow. too amazing.

morgan-freeman-on-helium.jpg This is a commercial for the Science channel's 'Through the Wormhole' featuring Morgan Freeman (who also hosts the show) talking on helium. Don't even act like you haven't waiting your whole life to hear what this sounds like. Now I can die happy. Hopefully in my sleep, but probably doing something my mom always told me not to. Keep going for the video.
