“I don’t know” is not a valid excuse when it’s your literal job to know. Total incompetence.

The DEI dog whistle is classic as unqualified RFK can’t figure out his own job description.

It still hurts. It’s still painful. But you keep hearing a synthetic BAWWW every time it hits you as a constant reminder of how it’s the stupidest possible way to die.

themathomhouse:

themathomhouse:

okay but if you ever see a male creative who had a string of great work and then everything else he did was dogshit, go to the “personal life” part of his wikipedia and look at his relationships. you’ll either find a major tragedy he didn’t recover from (completely understandable) or, more likely, there was a woman in his life doing uncredited shit editing his stuff or contributing generally and she’s not there anymore.

I told a friend about this phenomenon in literature and he called me weeks later like, I remembered what you said about women doing uncredited work when tim burton came up. he made a string of bangers then everything else just was nowhere near as good. the timeline matches perfectly to when he was with this german visual artist (lena gieseke). he’s done some good work in collaboration, but if things were dug into I suspect we would find she did a lot more than people realise.

so yeah whenever you look around like wow women didn’t work in history, or, women aren’t auteurs, or, there just aren’t as many great female writers - societal reasons for that aside, half the time they absolutely did.

christ not even at 1000 notes and the terfs have found this

alright chucklefucks time for some nuance and other shit that I really didn’t think would be necessary but here we are:

  • I’m talking about a trend for men taking advantage of their romantic partners by getting them to do (often unpaid and uncredited) work.
  • This kind of thing is generally about power. This is how bosses take credit for shit that YOU did. However, you do not love your boss (usually) and so will take that credit back given even half a chance - but if you do not feel empowered to do so, maybe you won’t. You often will feel less empowered if you belong to a marginalised group and your boss does not. That’s why intersectionality matters.
  • When it comes to romantic relationships, the creative process also affects the partner because success means a better chance at financial security - and honestly the collaborative process can be fun and intellectually stimulating! People like to support their partners! That is normal! But some people take advantage of that.
  • The difference between now and history is divorce. When a woman gets sick of a man doing this she can now leave his ass.
  • The reason I specifically said men and women was twofold: one, I’m far more aware of this historically because I’m a person who mostly studied literature published pre-1930, and gender roles and conceptions of gender and sexuality were fairly rigid and very different; and two, I only know of cases where this happened in the context of romantic relationships between people who identified as men and women, with men being the perpetrator. Even the modern cases I know about (yes everyone tagged Marcia Lucas, she’s the one most well-known on Tumblr I think).
  • It would not shock me if we start to see more cases of this happening to trans people who have cis partners, or people of colour with white people, or any other person who has social capital that their partner does not have. The problem is that we don’t usually find out until decades later. My point about checking the Wikipedia page for romantic relationship timelines still absolutely stands.

Some people openly credit their collaborators. The problem is entitlement, access to power, and doors opening more easily. So, no, this isn’t caused by being a man, and not every man does this.

Now I’m finished with the mature part of my post, so I can say I’m a huge queer non-binary femme bitch who represents and studies prisoners as a career. If you are really serious about doing some good for women you could: organise free childcare groups for under-privileged people in your local area or care about pregnancy in prisons and write to your MP about it or write to councils and businesses to push for more baby changing facilities and disabled toilets in public spaces! Pick a specific issue and look for an achievable way you can make a difference to the community around you, then write about it and encourage others to do the same.

University feminist groups used to do volunteer childcare and laundry and feeding kids and those things are still huge problems in most places, but, no, let’s worry about where people piss, that’s clearly the most pressing issue

Elon Musk Is Hounded by Haters in Path of Exile 2 Chat

Elon Musk Is Hounded by Haters in Path of Exile 2 Chat

On Saturday Elon Musk sat in his personal jet and tested out Starlink’s in-air WiFI by streaming some Path of Exile 2. Less than five minutes into the stream, someone in game chat asked him to “jerk off mr trump so he dies of a heart attack!” For the next hour and 40 minutes, the world’s richest man frowned his way through a livestream while people yelled at him.

Path of Exile 2 is an action role-playing game and Musk loves it, but he’s terrible at it. He has claimed he’s one of the top players in the world and later admitted he’s paid people to help keep his account leveled up and full of the high-end gear it needs to play the game at the highest level.

Over the weekend, in his jet, he was playing the game in hard core mode. When a player dies in this mode they cannot progress any further. Essentially, players have one life. Musk died a lot. The stream’s entire vibe was fucked. This is the richest man in the world sitting in a private jet playing a game by himself for an audience of strangers while techno music blasted through the speakers. Streaming on a platform he owns using technology he owns in a jet he owns, he sat stone-faced and grinded his way through the early portions of Path of Exile 2 while other players yelled at him.

I wish we could teach each other how to love the way we can teach animals that aren’t supposed to be able to feel it.

@kaijutegu is this cute? I know you deal with tegus and not iguanas, but I didn’t know who else to ask

This is precious.

So, first thing you need to know is that is a very visibly healthy adult green iguana. Every part of the iguana is sharp. The claws evolved to haul a ten pound lizard up a tree. The spines are like tiny icepicks. The tail is a bullwhip. The teeth evolved to shred leaves, but they’ll just as easily shred your flesh. Good luck making a healthy adult iguana do anything they don’t wanna. That puts us on our first thing to look at- is the animal capable of defense and getting away, physically? Yes, definitely.

Next thing to know is what does a threatened or scared iguana look like? When an iguana is threatened, it doesn’t stand on its hind legs like that; it stands on all fours and puffs itself up to look bigger, aggressively bobs its head (note: head bobbing is a behavior used for a LOT of things, it does need context- for example, they also head bob as part of mating displays), there is hissing, there is tail whipping- iguanas are not subtle creatures. None of this is the behavior of an iguana that feels threatened or is being a threat!

So what does standing like that mean? That’s just simple reaching. The iguana sees something they want and is attempting to reach it, and what they want appears to be uppies, because they settle into the human’s grip immediately.

Then, we see some GREAT handling from the human. There’s really great communication happening between the two of them! The person picks up the iguana very securely- pelvis and pectoral girdles are well supported, and he doesn’t grab. (Iguanas typically do NOT like being grabbed around the sides; many of their predators are birds and coming at them from above or gripping the sides is scary!)

As he goes in for the pet, he lets the iguana support their back half on his knee. The hold is secure but not tight; at any point, if the iggy was distressed, they could leave. But they don’t- instead, you see them leaning into the pets, actively participating in the behavior. They’re not even closing their eyes to block stimulus. They want this to happen.

This is the kind of bond that’s possible when you can prove to a big lizard that you’re trustworthy, and easily the best iguana video I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you for tagging me in!

Some green iguana body language resources under the jump!

Post this sign above the photocopier at your place of work.
"So many people falling for it - every few minutes I can hear loud yelling coming from the print room."
The Reddit thread had links for other brands of photocopiers (and for a Coke machine and various other pranks) fourteen years ago, but those have undergone linkrot.  This is the only one I saved.

[Image of text saying,

Some AAVE speakers pluralize ‘child’ as 'childrens’. People get racist about this (“It’s already plural!”), but 'children’ actually comes from Middle English speakers doing the same thing: slapping their plural marker on word already pluralized by an extinct plural marker.

To oversimplify: in Old English, 'childer’ ('ċildra’) was the plural of 'child’ ('ċild’). Middle English developed an ’-en’ plural marker, which we see in 'oxen’. Instead of updating to 'childen’, people slapped their preferred ’-en’ onto the end of 'childer’ - so now we have 'child-er-en’. AAVE carries on this tradition with 'child-er-en-s’.

Calling scam victims stupid, much like cult members, serves to do nothing but make you feel superior, blame victims for the wrongs done to them, and in turn actually makes you more vulnerable to scams (and cults, and so on). “Look at these people! Morons! I could never be one of them because I am smart, unlike these people who fell for them because they are stupid. It is not about vulnerability and luck, both of which are factors that could affect me, it is all simply a matter of in-born intelligence, which is why I, a better human, don’t have to worry about falling for them.”

And boom, you have already let your guard down - you would never fall for a scam (or cult, etc.) so you can safely click on that link or read that pamphlet because if it was a scam you’d have identified it as such immediately, because you are smart. You don’t need to stop and question. You’re too smart. And, really, if they didn’t want to get scammed they shouldn’t have gone out dressed like that.

We’re all potential victims. Every single one of us has been at one point or another been at vulnerable to a scammer, or a pickpocket, or any other number of external force trying to harm you for their own benefit. Blaming the victims feels good but it doesn’t help shit in the long run.

Being Cautious makes life really hard…everybody wants me to scan a QR code for some shit or click a link or sign in using an account or put information into a google form etc etc etc just for basic stuff and being like “I don’t trust it” makes you seem weird

Recently ive been involved in projects and stuff for work and school where everybody is like “And you can scan a QR code to access this…” or “You can sign up with your instagram account…” and I have to be the person thats like What If They Dont Have Instagram. What If They Dont Have A Smartphone With them.

Not to mention that the important way to not get scammed is dont click links just go to the website yourself, but everything is always changing their system 3 times a year to a new URL and something you have to navigate differently, so half the time I ignore hte emails then I have to call them on the phone to be like “Ok how do i do this thing”

And my school is sending me a thousand actual legitimate emails a week anyway like “You have to do this thing or you will explode or something” expecting me to click the link in the email

And freshman orientations are always expecting kids to download some sketchy app called Goox or some shit that Accesses Your Everything Conveniently. Well what if I don’t want to access my everything conveniently

oh yeah also during covid the school i was going to made me download literal actual malware to monitor me during test taking. lockdown browser, that thing that can access your camera at any time and use it for god knows what?

the line between scam and legitimate is too tenuous thats why we have all these problems

Doctor: What do you see in this X-ray?

Cary

Reminds me of my knee surgery back in the early 90's.... Young cocky doc looked at my MRI and said to his gaggle of residents "just what I though a simple meniscal tear". I elected to be awake for the surgery and as soon as the he saw the scope image he uttered "holy shit; what a mess"

somecunttookmyurl:

heardatmedschool:

Doctor: What do you see in this X-ray?

Students: *collective gasp*

Doctor: Please don’t do that in front of patients.

Some alternative statements you could consider when your initial reaction is just ‘!’:

  • I’m glad we took that X-ray
  • Well this is almost certainly diagnostic

When one of my classmates broke my leg in 2nd Grade, there was an entire fiasco and I nearly died but I do remember the guy from radiology storming out to the little curtain area I was in and SLAPPING the X-ray up on the back light and the doctor actually shouting “JE-YAY-SUS! No wonder the kid doesn’t have any damn blood!”

i have corneal dystrophy so my corneas will just kind of. tear. for no reason. quite frequently. cause of death: blinked too hard.

so one time i was in the eye hospital (id been there the day before and a junior doc dismissed me entirely as nothing being wrong, sent me off with no treatment, and my optician was Not Having It)

selfsame junior doc eye rolled and, when it was clear i wouldn’t be leaving again, begrudgingly called in the consultant who took one glance at one eye, said “oh my god” and sent for a second consultant

who took one look and said “‘ive never seen anything like it” and sent for a third

who took a quick look and said “wow. jesus. what a mess” and sent for the fourth etc

(junior doc getting progressively more embarrassed the whole time)

anyway both of my corneas have torn so many times it’s apparently just a mess of scar tissue. but if you were wondering what’s worse than one doctor exclaiming in surprise with 0 info, its having the entire department do it in succession
