What's Up in Pizza: Pizza Clubs, Chain Discounts, and Marc Malnati's Business Advice!

by Kate Andersen
Christopher.kantos

Not what I was hoping for with a "pizza club"

From Slice

  • Renee Moore probably didn't know what she was getting into when she told her boyfriend, Jeff McQueen, that he should start a pizza club. According to the Gazette he took her at her word, and the group—Pizza Addicts Anonymouse—has ballooned up to 150 members since April, despite very little promotion on the couple's part. McQueen, a meterologist and former New Yorker, is a die-hard pizza lover; the club goes on monthly outings to celebrate, learn about, and devour pies. Members pull from all over the D.C. area, and span from college students hankering for a slice to older Italian women making their own pies. "There are a lot of closet pizzaholics out there," says McQueen. "These people really know good pizza." A sentiment any Slice'r can get behind!
  • We're all familiar, I think, with Jon Stewart's Chicago pizza rant, a smack down of titanic proportions that aired this past November. Maybe you also caught the follow up segment, wherein Marc Malnati (of Lou Malnati's) visited the Daily Show to personally serve Jon a slice of Chicago-style pizza, in a conciliatory gesture. What we're perhaps less familiar with (or some of us anyway) is the background Marc brought to handling himself with the comedian. According to Crain's Chicago Business, Marc approaches a lot of what he does through the lens of therapy and open communication. When he stepped in to take over the family business, one of the early changes he made was to hire a business coach and therapist—at the encouragement of his wife, Jeanne—to help teach his staff, new and old, communication skills. For the past 22 years, they've kept at it, and of the company's 130 managers, 110 participate in the monthly sessions. This therapeutic method of dealing with problems has helped Mr. Malnati in his own life, making him more conscious of how he relates to others—including certain comedy show hosts!
  • Finally, there are a couple of anniversaries to celebrate! Pizza Hut traditionally lays claim to having sold the first thing ever (a pizza) over the internet, in 1994...making 2014 their 20th anniversary! According to Entrepreneur, to honor the event, they've brought back their seriously old-school ordering system, "PizzaNet", and are offering 50% off a medium or large pizza for "Hut Lovers" members ordering online between now and Friday, January 10th.
  • WSJ's MarketWatch has kept an eye on the other big anniversary this year—John Schnatter opened the first Papa John's in 1984. 30 years and 4,300 restaurants later, Papa John's has their own celebratory deal: now through January 26th, with the online purchase of any regularly priced large pizza you can also order a large, one-topping pie for only 30 cents more (and can add on the Papa's Chocolat Chipe Cookie for only $5).

You Can Draft A Fantasy Puppy Bowl Team

We are only a month out from the sporting spectacle of the year: Puppy Bowl X. (The "X" is for eXtreme puppies. Also, "ten.") This year's edition will have a number of new wrinkles, but the biggest game-changer is the ability to play fantasy puppy football. Everything else on Feb. 2 has just been rendered meaningless.

Apple's best advertisement ever?

by Jason Kottke
Christopher.kantos

Apple is good at advertising.

So, there's the famous 1984 Super Bowl commercial for the Macintosh. There was the Think Different campaign. And the Mac vs. PC ads. But I think Apple's newest effort, Misunderstood, is perhaps their best ad ever:

Or maybe I'm the biggest sap in the world...either way, I'm totally crying at work.

ps. But of course, that can't be the best Apple advertisement ever because that title will always and forever be taken by a drunk Jeff Goldblum extolling the virtues of the iMac's internet capabilities:

Great, now I'm crying from laughing at work.

Super long German words have always entertained me, they are supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. In this video Barbara, who is known for her Rhubarb pies, opens a restaurant with a bar that is frequented by 3 barbarians who in turn need a beard trim from a beer drinking barber.

Classic Burgers Outside Minneapolis at Lions Tap

by Noah Arenstein
Christopher.kantos

Queue wave of memories. I forgot about this place.

From A Hamburger Today

Lions Tap

16180 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55347 (map); 952-934-5299; lionstap.com
Cooking method: griddle
Short Order: Classic, simple burgers done right
Want Fries With That? Crisp and well seasoned
Price: single hamburger, $3.30; double cheeseburger, $7.45; fries: $2.25

Lions Tap is an old place. Cemented in the bluffs of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, outside of Minneapolis, the Tap has been selling burgers since 1958, but it's far older than that. The low building has been rehabbed and renovated over the years, so that it now resembles a classic, Midwest basement complete with Vikings and Twins collectibles and bucolic wallpaper featuring deer, ducks, and other birds. It feels like a wholesome place, too. Bert and Bonnie Notermann, the owners and formulators of the current burger (served since they purchased the restaurant in the 70's), are introduced on the menu as "Your Hosts."

An absurdly detailed pair of prominently hung posters lays out the entire history of the location beginning epically with "The year was 1855...". From there, the poster traces the story of the Tap as it has evolved from a vegetable market to a beer stand, a bar, a gas station, and back to a bar before the then owners began selling burgers in 1958. Other key details include the fact that the parking lot was blacktopped in 1981 and the specifics of an easement granted to previous owners at the dawn of the twentieth century. No detail is too small for the Tap.

Lions Tap serves the classic ideal of a burger (described as a "purist's favorite" on the menu) and is better for it. Despite the Jucy Lucy's inextricable identification with Minneapolis, customers will not find any cheese-stuffed burgers here. Instead, quarter-pound patties are ground and hand-formed daily, cooked to a fine, nearly black sear on a griddle and topped with Lions Tap's seasoning blend, which most likely contains a bit of garlic and onion powder and black pepper, among other, more secret ingredients.

The resulting beef is plenty juicy, with a meaty bite and properly salty. The single hamburger ($3.30) comes simply with raw or fried onions and pickles, but I opted for a double cheeseburger ($7.45) with fried onions (always go fried). The attention paid to detailing the history of the Lions Tap carries over to the burgers; they're appropriately minimalist, but carefully constructed.

Other burger options include a mushroom and Swiss burger (single, $4.75; double, $8.95), which has its benefits, but isn't as memorable as the original.

The California burger (single, $4.60; double, $8.65) comes with lettuce and tomato (not this California Cheeseburger).

Fries ($2.25) are crisp and well seasoned, but you may be better off ordering a second burger as a side.

Root beer on tap and fountain "pop" are available and screamingly sweet, but they me nostalgic for the homemade root beer stand I grew up on in Ohio.

Lions Tap is as advertised—straightforward burgers done right and not overcomplicated. If you're looking for a classic burger in the Minneapolis area, the Tap has you covered.

How to say goodbye to everyone at a party: don't

by Jason Kottke

From Seth Stevenson, an appreciation of leaving social occasions without saying goodbye.

These sorts of goodbyes inevitably devolve into awkward small talk that lasts too long and then peters out. We vow vaguely to meet again, then linger for a moment, thinking of something else we might say before the whole exchange fizzles and we shuffle apart. Repeat this several times, at a social outing delightfully filled with your acquaintances, and it starts to sap a not inconsiderable portion of that delight.

Strip-T's Fried Cauliflower Sandwich Is One of the Boston Area's Best

by Liz Bomze

20131005-268684-stripts-cauliflower-sandwich-primary-edit.jpg

The first iteration of Strip-T's, the place Paul Maslow opened in the late '80s, was a lunch spot that served good sandwiches at fair prices. Since his son Tim took over the kitchen in 2011, the food has become sexier and the cost has jumped a bit, but I'd argue that good—actually, great—sandwiches at fair prices is still part of the lunch plan.

There's the Fried Cauliflower ($10) that's filled out with broccoli rabe, pickled peppers, and provolone. That combo sounds like a vegetarian taken on Philly's famous roast pork sandwich, but the flavors and textures are so right on that it almost feels silly to bring up the meat version.

The crusty Iggy's baguette is jam-packed with florets that are crispy at the surface and creamy within; the dramatic color contrast of the cross-section is a true indication of that. Broccoli rabe is perfectly tender and less bitter than it is garlicky—you'll want to order a side dish of it (and you can for $5)—and the sweet-tangy pickled peppers offset the sharper flavors just enough. There's plenty of the cheese, which is the most interesting component. The coarse grated stuff on top hits with lots of sharpness and saltiness like good provolone should, but if you look at the surface of the bread, it's clear that a portion of the cheese melts in the flavorful juices shed by the vegetables and becomes something like a light mornay sauce. Whether or not it's an intentional move, it's a brilliant one, as the rich, savory flavors of the filling carry through every bite of the bread.

Also noteworthy at lunch: The Tossed Salad ($7.50) is easy to overlook but is anything but (excuse the pun) garden variety. The bowl is huge and piled with romaine and baby spinach, ripe cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, shaved fennel, cucumbers, pickled red onions, and spice-rubbed croutons, and a killer balsamic vinaigrette that's sharp and sweet.

About the author: Liz Bomze lives in Brookline, MA, and works as the Senior Features Editor for Cook's Illustrated Magazine. In her free time, she freelances regularly for the Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, the Improper Bostonian, and Martha's Vineyard Magazine; practices bread-baking and canning; takes photos; reads; and watches baseball. Top 5 foods: fresh noodles, gravlax, sour cherry pie, burrata, ma po tofu.

Yuengling Beer Plans to Return to Massachusetts

by Marc
It looks like America's oldest brewery may be coming back to Massachusetts.

According to a post in Banker & Tradesman, Yuengling is currently finalizing plans to return to the state early next year a couple of decades after leaving the market. The article says that the Pennsylvania-based brewer could end up building a brewery in the state depending on the amount of demand, though bringing its beers in from existing plants is also a possibility as well. Currently, Yuengling cannot be found anywhere in New England, though it is available in New York.

Yuengling, which is headquartered in Pottsville, PA, first started out in 1829 and is now one of the largest brewing companies in the United States. Its most popular beer is its lager, though the company also offers porter, black and tan, ale, light beers, and a premium beer. The website for Yuengling can be found at http://www.yuengling.com/

The USMNT Saves Mexico, And Mexico Is Eternally Grateful

Soccer can be a cruel even in victory. This photo is of the U.S.'s Terrence Boyd tearfully embracing Panama's Felipe Baloy, after two late goals from the USMNT officially eliminated Los Canaleros from the World Cup. But the sport can also be generous in defeat: the U.S.'s win singlehandedly kept alive its fiercest rival, Mexico.

NHL Fighters Find Way Around New Helmet Rule: Help Each Other Out!

by Barry Petchesky

Among the new NHL rules this season, fighters are no longer allowed to take their helmets off, under penalty of an additional two-minute minor. It's officially about safety, and also likely an incremental step in cracking down on the practice of fighting itself. It took all of two preseason games for players to find the loophole.

The Rumor Mill: Is Shake Shack Coming to Boston's Faneuil Hall?

by Marc
Christopher.kantos

As awesome as this would be it would probably be impossible to get a burger after 11am.

It looks like a New York-based burger stand *may* be opening a new shop in the heart of downtown Boston, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Eater Boston is reporting that Shake Shack could possibly be on its way to Faneuil Hall, with a "reliable tipster" saying that "The lease isn't signed yet, but it's reportedly in the works." A second EB tipster, however, "has nothing concrete to share" and that "rumors often circulate about new Shake Shack locations."

For now, burger lovers in the Faneuil Hall area will have to wait, but as soon as we hear any kind of confirmation on this, we will post an update here.

Shake Shack currently has one location in the Boston area--in Chestnut Hill--with another soon opening in Cambridge's Harvard Square. Its website can be found at http://www.shakeshack.com/
