Timeless Fashion

by Mary Kelly

Woman Style
Your Personal Guide to Timeless Fashion
Feldon
1979

Have some Womanstyle, circa 1979. It’s timeless assuming time stops in 1985. The book itself is a basic fashion planning guide. It has all the info on fabrics, style, wardrobe planning, etc. The photography is something else. Soft focus seems to be the photographer’s favorite look for some pictures. Also, since it is about fashion, some of the pictures are not good at showing off the actual clothes.

I was in college at the time of this book and the basic wardrobe was jeans and a t-shirt. Cowl neck sweaters were a thing, but I think that is as far as my friends and I ventured for fashion in the late 1970s. I would have been all over the final picture of the boots and skirt. As you peruse the choices, I better warn you of the picture of the highly decorated reddish/pink room. (ALB is not responsible for any trauma related to looking at this picture.)

Facebook and Twitter push back against links to 'Plandemic' sequel

by Richard Lawler

Months after the coronavirus pandemic spread worldwide, social media platforms are still dealing with misinformation. In May a video titled Plandemic spread across Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, despite containing false information loosely attached to wider conspiracy theories targeting people like Bill Gates and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Now, after a short build-up, a group of people have put together a “sequel,” Plandemic: Indoctornation that continues the misleading and false themes of the original. As The Verge notes, Twitter and Facebook have been more proactive this time around.

Facebook
Facebook

On Facebook, sharing a link to the video’s website is blocked straight away, as opposed to their initial steps with the first video that just limited its reach. Using Twitter the link is posted without a warning on the site, but clicking it takes viewers to an interstitial warning that link is “potentially spammy or unsafe” because it could fall into a list of categories that includes “misleading content that could lead to real-world harm.” YouTube is taking down copies of the video, while TikTok has blocked searches for the term.

Twitter

If you must know what is in the video, a number of reporters watched during its live unveiling earlier, noting its anti-vaccine rhetoric and other rumors. It does not significantly feature Dr. Judy Mikovitz, the discredited scientist from the first video, and largely pushes the same unfounded rumors about Bill Gates that have been seen before. According to Buzzfeed News, “As a piece of journalism, it is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. As a piece of entertainment, it is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

'Untitled Goose Game' will get a two-goose mode in September

by Jessica Conditt

Untitled Goose Game? More like Untitled Geese Game. House House’s adorably annoying bird simulator is getting a free two-player update on September 23rd across all platforms. Untitled Goose Game is also heading to Steam and Itch that same day, with the multiplayer mode built-in.

The update allows you to play through the entire game with two geese, causing more havoc than ever before. Here’s how House House describes the new, cooperative mode on YouTube:

● New goose, new honk, still horrible

● Play through the entire game with two players

● Work together as two geese to make even bigger trouble

● A free update for all owners of Untitled Goose Game

The update will hit Steam, Itch, the Epic Games Store, Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game at the same time. Additionally, iam8bit is producing physical versions of Untitled Goose Game for Switch and PS4, and they’re available for pre-order now. They both come out on September 29th, alongside the game’s vinyl soundtrack; the Switch version costs $40 and the PS4 edition costs $35.

House House developers will participate in an hour-long Q&A session on the Nintendo Indie World Twitter account on August 20th beginning at 4pm ET.

USPS will stop removing mail-sorting machines until after the election

by Jessica Conditt

The United States Postal Service today suspended measures that caused mail-delivery delays across the country in recent weeks, including an initiative designed to remove hundreds of mail-sorting machines from active rotation. There are no public plans to reinstate machines that have already been taken offline, but starting today, no additional units will be removed from service until after the US presidential election in November.

Vice reported last week that the USPS had begun retiring mail-sorting machines across the country “without any official explanation or reason given,” significantly slowing employees’ ability to organize and send mail. A total of 671 machines, or 10 percent of the postal service’s stock, were scheduled to be taken offline, according to The Washington Post.

This was part of a larger initiative to “strengthen the Postal Service” by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who joined the USPS in June after 35 years as an executive at a large supply-chain logistics company. DeJoy is a noted ally of President Donald Trump, who has been attempting to discredit the USPS ahead of the November election. Trump admitted on August 13th that his recent rhetoric against the USPS was designed to curtail the country’s mail-in voting process.

When DeJoy took over the USPS in June, he implemented hiring freezes and organizational rules that caused delays in the delivery of some prescriptions and mid-summer primary ballots across the US. Alongside the forced retirement of mail-sorting machines, DeJoy instituted rules that limited the amount of overtime employees could earn, and banned extra trips that would ensure on-time deliveries.

Today in a statement, DeJoy said, “To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded. I want to assure all Americans of the following: Retail hours at Post Offices will not change. Mail processing equipment and blue collection boxes will remain where they are. No mail processing facilities will be closed. And we reassert that overtime has, and will continue to be, approved as needed.”

Democrats — and some Republicans — have been railing against attacks on the Postal Service for weeks, and on August 12th, Postal Service Inspector General Tammy Whitcomb launched an investigation into DeJoy’s new policies. DeJoy will testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday, and he’ll appear before the House Oversight Committee the following Monday. House Democrats plan to pass a funding bill aimed at the USPS on Saturday, August 22nd.

While today’s promise from DeJoy halts ongoing efforts to handicap the USPS, it doesn’t address any damage that’s already been done — notably, it doesn’t reinstate the mail-sorting machines that have already been taken offline. Democratic lawmakers have pledged to include reparative measures in the Saturday bill.

The Philosophy of Humor

Epictetus: "What is the basis of comedy? What is laughter? What is joking?"

Epictetus: "Nothing but scorn for the weak. We laugh because we see ourselves as better. Laughter is a vice, a man of proper stoic virtue does not take part in humor."

Epictetus: "Laughter is a mistake."

Immanuel Kant: "Look, I agree with you, Epictetus, that humor is a mistake and teaches us nothing, but it isn't just scorn. When, after building up an expectation, we hear a surprising twist, it jostles nerves at random which produces a pleasing laugh."

Kant: "I bet i can make you laugh merely by giving an absurd tale which is contrary to your understanding, with no scorn involved."

Epictetus: "Impossible. I have never laughed and i never will."

Kant: "A merchant returning from India to Europe with all his wealth in merchandise...was forced to throw it overboard in a heavy storm and grieved the loss so much that his wig turned gray the same night."

Epictetus: "That is not funny and i will not laugh at it."

Saint Thomas Aquinas: "No, you have it wrong too Kant! Laughter is merely play. We joke to test each other's wit and bring joy, thus it is a virtue, not a vice. For example, say a landlord says the following to a tenant late on their rent:"

Aquinas: "'We appreciate your business, but, please, give us a break. Your account is overdue ten months. That means we’ve carried you longer than your mother did!'"

Aquinas: "He does so to lighten the mood and show a connection between two things, how is that a vice?"
Epictetus: "Because, Aquinas, instead of playful banter he should have used the opportunity to teach a lesson in stoic virtue."

Sigmund Freud: "No, Kant was closer, but the nerves aren't jostled “at random”, it is our pent up deep repressions that are released in the form of laughter. The human mind represses much and saying outloud these repressions causes a release."

Epictetus: "I have no “repressions”, Freud, I live according to nature."
Freud: "Is that so? Let's see if the following joke makes you laugh, shall we?"

Freud: "Penis."

Epictetus: "That's it?"
Freud: "Wait for the punchline."
Epictetus: "Okay...what's the punchline?"

Freud: "More penis."

Freud, loudly: "Peeeeeeeenis!"

Description: Everyone starts laughing.

Epictetus: "HaHahahaHa. Good one Freud. Penis. You got me, that was pretty funny."
