New Savage Love: Dramatis Personae

I'm someone who does gay porn for a living. How do people who do gay porn meet someone who doesn’t just sexualize or fetishize them? I can’t eat, sleep, and breathe my work constantly but the guys I meet want me to live out the “porn persona” version of myself all the time. How does someone who does porn know who you can be yourself with?

3DO Interactive Multiplayer - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)
Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 191: 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. The 3DO gaming console has been talked about before on AVGN, in the Plumbers Don't Wear Ties episode. But, the Nerd is back to review some of the other awful games for the system, however, there are a few gems in there too. The "REAL" 3DO Interactive Multiplayer was a game console hardware platform originally released in 1993 (with the first models released by Panasonic and other models released by other companies in 1994.) Cheap production cost of CDs led to a large amount of shovelware being released for the system. In this review, the Nerd covers Gex, Road Rash, DOOM, Way of the Warrior, Crash N Burn, Soccer Kid, Battle Chess, Street Fighter II, Alone in the Dark, Cyberia, PO'd, Demolition Man, Virtuoso, a bunch of American Laser Games stuff (Mad Dog McCree and Crime Patrol), and more.
Special thanks to Rob Steiner Jr. for the games and hardware!

The Flopping Of Trump's Blog Proves That It's Not Free Speech He's Upset About; But Free Reach
A week ago, we wrote about Trump's new blog, which was designed to look vaguely tweet-like, noting that this proved that he never needed Twitter or Facebook to speak freely. He's always been able to speak on his own website. NBC News has an interesting story now, suggesting that the blog just isn't getting that much attention.
A week since the unveiling, social media data suggests things are not going well.
The ex-president’s blog has drawn a considerably smaller audience than his once-powerful social media accounts, according to engagement data compiled with BuzzSumo, a social media analytics company. The data offers a hint that while Trump remains a political force, his online footprint is still dependent on returning to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
The Desk of Donald J. Trump is limited — users can’t comment or engage with the actual posts beyond sharing them to other platforms, an action few people do, according to the data.
Some have been using this to argue that Twitter and Facebook's bans on the former president were attacks on his "free speech." But it actually demonstrates something different -- and important. Everyone complaining about the removal of Trump's account are not actually mad about the "free speech" part of it. They're really mad about the "free reach." (Hat tip to Renee DiResta for making this point years ago).
Being kicked off these platforms by the platforms (as opposed to, say, the government) is not an attack on your ability to speak. There are lots of places to do that. It is, instead, an attack on having easy access to an audience on those platforms. And, as far as I can tell, there is no right to having as large an audience as possible. Thus, in the same sense that I can't demand a million followers on any of these platforms, the former president similarly can't demand that they supply him with the audience of their users.
HR Doesn’t Care about Your Feelings

Yesterday, I encountered a question on an HR forum. The poster asked about an employee who had just changed religions, was now a Muslim, and wanted to wear “Muslim clothes.” This violated the company’s dress code, she said. Was she required to accommodate the request?
Forum members, theoretically HR professionals, condemned her immediately as bigoted, called the question a no-brainer, and insisted that of course, she had to accommodate the employee.
It took at least 20 comments before someone asked what the dress code was, and another 20 before someone asked what the employee’s job was.
A few months ago I encountered another religious accommodation question on an HR forum. In this question, the employee didn’t want to participate in a Pride event and claimed her religion prevented her from participating.
Just like the other question, people jumped in with condemnation for the employee. How bigoted the employee must be and of course, the business didn’t have to accommodate her. No questions about what her position was, what the event was, and would it create an undue hardship to accommodate the employee.
The answer to both questions is the same: It depends.
With religious accommodation cases, it can be difficult to keep our own feelings out of it and answer the question correctly. You can’t refuse to accommodate because you don’t like it.
Religious accommodation is required if the employee has a sincere belief, and it doesn’t cause an undue hardship.
Let’s look at each one of them.
In the first situation, if the Muslim employee wanted to wear a full burka with big flowing sleeves and the job was neurosurgeon, of course, it wouldn’t be reasonable to accommodate that. You can’t operate with flowing sleeves.
But, if the job was (as Abercrombie & Fitch found out) in retail, they will need to accommodate.
If the Pride event is one where half the employees don’t have to work the event, and someone else is willing to swap shifts with her, they will need to accommodate.
But, if the company is responsible for security for the event, and every security employee has to work that day, then it would cause undue hardship and they would not need to accommodate her request.
In both situations, it doesn’t matter what your personal feelings are. What matters are the facts of the situation. Religious accommodations are very fact-specific, and anyone who jumps in with a definitive answer without clarification around the job, the company, and the requested accommodation is answering based on their own personal beliefs rather than giving the correct answer.
You have to set your own beliefs aside in these situations. You need to explain to the employee and the management why the answer is thus-and-such.
You also need to make sure no one retaliates against the employee who requested an accommodation–whether you could give the accommodation or not. Your personal feelings on headscarves and Pride parades are irrelevant. If the company can accommodate the request without undue hardship, you need to provide that.

Get Started On Your Oric
Hartnell and Shaw
1983
Submitter: This gem comes from 1983 and it’s great to know what type of technology this library was using when I was just 3 years old. Unlike the Oric 1 that I am sure was replaced 35 years ago, this book seemed to dodge that fate until today.
Holly: What the heck is an Oric?

Elder Artwork
Creative Arts with Older Adults: A Sourcebook
Weisberg and Wilder, Eds.
1985
Submitter: Found in the stack of this public library – It’s not truly awful, but it is old and uninspiring. The photos are poor and the image/printing quality is terrible if you’re BIPOC. I also think we have moved away from the term Geriatric.
Holly: Sometimes books like these can be downright condescending, when older adults may well be master artists. I do understand that physical conditions related to aging can affect one’s ability to make creative arts, even if they had high-level skills at any point in their lives. However, the first page below suggests making everyone aware of everyone else’s disabilities so that they’re all sensitive to each others’ needs – which is something I would NEVER do. It’s no one’s business unless they choose to share that information, and really irrelevant to making art. I learned recently about process art vs. product art from a Youth Librarian job interviewee, and that would work well in this situation. It’s about not trying to make your final product look like a sample by following set instructions, but rather expressing yourself through the process of making whatever art you come up with from the tools available.

A government official proposes cloning an ancient army
In the field of Gothic terror the subfield of mad science occupies a special place. And few nations do mad science more boldly than Russia.
Case in point: Russian defense minister Sergey Shoygu floated the idea of cloning an ancient army.
Russia's Defense Minister has announced his plan for the DNA cloning of ancient Siberian warriors and their horses. The ancient Tunnug burial site, located in the Valley of the Kings in the Republic of Tuva in Siberia, holds the remains of 3,000-year-old Scythian warriors. Now, Sergei Shoigu, Russia's Defense Minister and one of Vladimir Putin's closest advisors, has disclosed his desire to use DNA cloning to re-create an army of noble warriors.
When Shoigu, 65, initiated the Russian-Swiss archeological digs here three years ago a modern-day shaman was even drafted in by scientists to ensure the excavations did not anger the spirits.
The defence chief told a session of the Russian Geographical Society, also attended remotely by Putin, on Wednesday: 'Of course, we would like very much to find the organic matter.'
He was referring to well-preserved remains of ancient people and animals, explained TASS.
'I believe you understand what would follow that,' said Shoigu in a broadcast by Zvezda TV.
'It would be possible to make something of it, if not Dolly the Sheep.'
He added, without explaining more of planned genomic research that 'in general, it will be very interesting'.
Popular Science thinks this is just wild and unlikely. But they do run a splendid photo of ancient Scythian remains:

Why does the mouse cursor jump a few pixels if you right-click on the Start button?
Some time ago, I noted that mouse cursor jumps a few pixels if you click on the very bottom row of pixels on the taskbar. I noted that this is done to make it possible to click on the very bottom row of pixels, even though they are technically a border, in order to operate on the button immediately above them. Otherwise, the button-down code sees that the mouse is outside the button and cancels the button operation (click or drag).
If you right-click on the Start button, the mouse cursor jumps a few pixels up and to the right. Is this done to solve the same problem?
No, the problem doesn’t apply here because the right mouse button does not have the same cancellation behavior as the left mouse button. There’s a different reason for moving the mouse cursor.
The mouse cursor moves up and to the right so that it is positioned over the last menu item. That way, you can right-click followed by left-click to activate the bottom menu item.
This means that the bottom item on the Start button’s context menu has a special status: It’s the one you can activate quickly by performing a right-click left-click.

Philly Is Your Friend from College Who Will Always Be Three Credits Shy of Graduating
Philadelphia is her government name. You can call her “Philly,” if you’re family.
Philly knows how to say water. Don’t tell her how to use her u’s.
Somebody says, “You get to have a mascot!” And Philly chooses something halfway between a furry orange pizza and your Uncle Larry.
You and Philly get sloshed. You get your heel stuck in the cobblestones. Philly won’t stop scream-singing Hall and Oates. Only twelve months to go until the next Philly Furnace Party!
There are the bones of at least a dozen people under Washington Square. She wants to go dig them up!
Al Capone stayed here. In prison. Look, here’s his tasteful paintings.
And this is where George Washington took a little nap.
And this is where Ona Judge, George Washington’s slave who overheard she was about to be passed off as a wedding present, took off. She escaped on the sloop Nancy, saying, “Even New England is better than this.”
That hitchhiking robot that made it all across all fifty states? Yep, Philly decapitated it, then stripped that jawn. The rumble don’t stumble.
If you look up at City Hall at just the right angle at the golden hour, you’ll see William Penn’s right hand is actually his Billy Penn-is.
Why is there a cheesteak place across from a cheesteak place? Because there is a vape shop next to a vape shop, a pizza jawn across from a pizza jawn, and a trolley driver who recites poetry.
Yes, that is a mural penis. Yes, that is another penis. Look, one of her favorite artists just so happens to rely on penises heavily. He is a world-famous eccentric, OK?
She is sensitive about her art. Do not press her on this.
Chi-Town is her sister from another grifter, even if they’re really just cousins, and actually not related at all. Hey, Cuz: luv ya.
Philly is all brotherly love, OK? But she is also so gritty that there is even a knockoff Gritty. And, if you come down from New York in a power suit, you better think about how long you plan to stick around. Don’t make these earrings come out. Don’t make her spit out her gum. Philly is always down to fight for Philly.
Iggles!
Philly goes down to Jewelers’ Row just to take a selfie through the eyes of Silver Linings Playbook. You both cry about it.
There goes Kate Winslet again, hugging on a Wawa.
Her most attractive feature: It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. And her left side.
No better way to celebrate the New Year with Philly than puking up ice-cold Perronis and your favorite water-ice combo in the gutters on Two Street with a bunch of old white men while the whole country watches.
This is the birthplace of democracy, people. Philly doesn’t care about the Spanish Flu, she’s gonna throw that Liberty Loan Parade and kiss all the 1918 babies. It’s patriotic.
Everybody stays up all night studying. Philly rolls out of bed still a bit drunk, counts some ballots, saves the day. You’re welcome, nation.
You race to the top of the Art Museum steps doing Rocky arms. You win, she punches you out. Secretly, you wish all your friends were like this.
