Hey dude! How’s it going?! It’s me, someone you vaguely remember from high school, and I wanted to check your interest in joining this pyramid scheme I got caught up in.

Wow. Feels like just yesterday we were in chemistry class sitting far away from each other and not talking because we weren’t friends. But before I get sidetracked reminiscing, I wanted to pitch you this incredibly shady business venture I got hoodwinked into. The product is simple: it’s some kind of weird tea or skincare product or cooking gadget.

I won’t explain the business model yet because if I did you would immediately close this message and call the Better Business Bureau. Here’s where I’m asking you to trust me, the guy who you might recall skipped gym class a lot to get high in the alley.

First, let me tell you about my personal journey with the product. I was looking for an easy way to make money and got roped into this because I’m an idiot. If you’ve seen my Instagram stories, you know I have nothing but positive things to say about this pyramid scheme. If you don’t watch my stories, that’s honestly understandable. We don’t even follow each other. Why would we?

Now, I have no idea what you’re up to these days because I’ve made zero effort to stay in touch, but the great thing about this pyramid scheme is that it can be done remotely and the hours are flexible. The only downside is that once you join, you are trapped until the sweet release of death.

Also, if it would make you feel better, I can stop calling it a pyramid scheme and start using alarmingly vague terms like “income opportunity” or “entrepreneurial endeavor.” That’s how I got hooked!

At this point, you’re probably wondering why I’m messaging you specifically. When choosing people I knew to be qualified business partners, I thought back to that time at prom where we stood together in line for the bathroom. If that anecdote doesn’t resonate, it’s because I’ve already contacted everyone I actually have a relationship with. Frankly, my key criteria for new potential investors has been reduced to “friends on Facebook” and “currently alive.”

I’ve finished assembling the first prototype board of Yellowstone 2.0, my FPGA-based universal disk controller for Apple II computers. I used a syringe to dispense solder paste onto the pads, and baked the board on a hot plate with the surface mount components, before manually soldering all the through-hole components. It took about 1.5 hours to assemble, so it’s not something I’d want to do by hand very often. But for a one-off prototype it’s OK.

The board doesn’t work. After lots of puzzling and scratching my head, I determined that the data bus signal D5 is always stuck at 1. After another hour or two of puzzling, I discovered why. What’s wrong with this picture?

The image shows the traces and components on a small section of the Yellowstone 2.0 board. There’s a signal trace going directly through an unrelated power supply via under the R20 text. That signal trace is D5, so D5 is directly connected to the 3.3 volt supply. Arghh! How did I make that mistake? Why didn’t the layout software’s design rule checker warn me about the overlapping trace? When I rerun the DRC, it does warn me, so it’s not the software’s fault. I must have moved that trace just before I finalized the board layout, and forgotten to rerun the DRC. That’s an expensive mistake.

I can move the overlapping signal trace out of the way and get some new PCBs made, but that will take a few weeks. Meanwhile, can I fix this board somehow, so I can continue testing it? Usually I can fix mistakes like these by cutting a signal track with a razor, and soldering narrow gauge wire to replace the severed track. But here there’s not much room to work with for cutting. For most of its length, the problematic signal trace is only a few mils away from another signal trace, and my hand-cutting skills aren’t that precise. I also need to cut the track twice: once above the via overlap, and a second time below it, and then join them with wire. I think I can probably do it, but it’ll be tricky.

I really need a break from living through history.

About twenty years ago, I bought a used IBM Model M keyboard with a PS/2 connector. I believe it cost me around $5-$10 plus shipping at the time. A good investment, given that this sort of keyboard is probably worth $100 or more these days.

Once about every 10 years, I clean the keyboard. This time I removed all the key caps I could and ran them through a dishwasher; that worked very well. The rest I cleaned with a damp cloth and a bit of dish soap.

After the cleaning, the keyboard looks really good. It was used when I got it, I used it pretty heavily for about ten years, and it’s now close to 30 years old. And yet it shows much less wear than the vast majority of keyboards of considerably newer vintage.

It’s obvious that IBM used a high quality plastic that does not yellow with age and is mechanically very resistant. The key caps are practically not worn at all.

The keyboard is probably just old enough to have been still Made in USA. To put it into perspective, it was made when Bill Clinton had been President for about six months, not long after the release of OS/2 2.1, and about two weeks before Windows NT 3.1 was released.

As with most old IBM equipment, don’t drop it on your foot. It’s heavy.

Given this keyboard’s track record, I would guess that in another 30 years, it will still be working fine, while most keyboards made today will have disintegrated into a pile of plastic dust.

Withstand: Latinx Art in Times of Conflict is the first juried exhibition in the Holocaust Museum Houston’s new, expanded building. The exhibition explores themes of social justice and human rights through 100 artworks by Houston Latinx artists.  Via the Museum: “The multi-media exhibition will be a platform that examines issues that impact the community, fosters dialogue on difficult questions, and ultimately empowers social change through art.”

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…

1. Asking for compensation to cover a lost perk

I work as a staff member at a school, which is categorized as a nonprofit and my colleagues and I are paid nonprofit-level salaries. One of our perks is that breakfast and lunch are available to us for free in the cafeteria. During a normal summer when students are not on campus, the school hosts summer camps so the cafeteria is open throughout the summer too. Last summer, campus was closed due to the pandemic and we all worked from home. It appears that this summer there are no camps. My colleagues and I were just informed the cafeteria will be closed for the entire summer (10 weeks).

Getting paid our salaries in a high cost-of-living area is tough. I am a single parent with a not-super-flexible budget, and I have colleagues in similar inflexible budget situations: new parents, caregivers, single people paying off school loans, and more. I just had a conversation with some of my colleagues lamenting that we are barely surviving on our salaries and are concerned about our summer budgets. Beyond this issue, I enjoy working at my job.

I am considering speaking with HR about some type of additional or alternative compensation to help cover the missing perk that my colleagues have come to rely on as an income supplement. I am wondering if you have advice — even if that advice is “don’t talk to HR and instead search for a new job.” I did not consider raising this last summer because I did not know how long the pandemic would last and worried about being seen in a negative light for asking while economic uncertainty that pervaded the country. Now that we can all see the light at the end of the tunnel and my workplace appears to be more secure, I want to ask what you think about this.

If you weren’t being paid barely-survival-level salaries, I’d tell you not to ask for this — perks sometimes go away when circumstances change and you can’t usually ask to be compensated more when that happens. But the fact that many of you are barely making it on what you’re being paid is relevant, and I think you could raise it if you frame it in that light. You could say that the free meals have been vital to many of you working on low salaries and ask if they’d be willing to consider a meal stipend or other supplement while the cafeteria is closed.

Frankly, that framing should shame them — it’s a problem that they’re paying employees so little that the loss of free meals jeopardizes people’s budgets. Nonprofit work does not universally mean “our staff are barely getting by,” nor is it supposed to. Plenty of nonprofits pay living wages or significantly better, and you shouldn’t allow them to convince you that subsistence budgets are somehow just part of the deal.

2. What’s up with video cover letters?

I was perusing social media and came across someone who applied to a job that required a video cover letter. Is this a thing? I’m an elder millennial introvert and this has me all kinds of confused and irritated.

It’s not often a thing, but occasionally a company does require it. It’s baffling to me because watching videos takes so much longer than quickly skimming a cover letter to see if you want to read more. It also invites a ton of bias (unconscious or otherwise) based on race, appearance, accents, etc. (And yes, those things will all be observable at some point in the interview process, but it’s been well established that keeping them out of initial screenings leads to more diverse candidate pools.) And unless the job requires public speaking, requiring videos is likely to build in bias based on skills that might have little to do with the job too.

Confused and irritated is an appropriate response.

3. What do I owe my boss after grad school?

I’m currently a staff member at my local university. I took this role three years ago to pay for my master’s program in an unrelated field. As I wind down my studies, I am wondering how long I should stay at my current job before moving on to a position related to my shiny new degree. My mom pointed out that my boss has been a huge advocate of my education and has given me an incredible amount of flexibility, without which I would not have been able to complete my program. Therefore I should wait a year before I start my job search.

While I agree my boss has been amazing, I countered that I also have been a great employee. While applying to and completing my program, I have been promoted twice, expanded my current role, received stellar reviews, taken on and created new projects, trained other coworkers, and am always available for last-minute assignments, which my boss has taken me up on several times. Basically, yes my boss is a rock star, but I haven’t exactly been out to lunch either.

Another thing that is coloring my judgement is that while I really like my boss and teammates, I don’t love the work, I don’t like the greater institution, and I’m not paid competitively. (In the salary spreadsheet you published, I had the lowest salary for my type of work by $6,000.)

Do I wait before I start applying to new positions? How long do I “owe” my boss my undivided attention? What’s reasonable for a boss that has gone above and beyond, but a job I could take or leave?

Assuming you didn’t sign an agreement to stay for X amount of time afterwards (which is common with tuition reimbursement agreements), it’s okay to start looking now. Your boss has been an excellent and accommodating boss, and in return you have been an excellent and accommodating employee and given her three years of good work. You don’t “owe” her any amount of your future! You get to leave when you’re ready to leave (always, but especially when you’re being underpaid).

I think your mom feels like your boss gave you something “extra” and you need to repay that by staying longer, but it sounds like your boss did reasonable things to retain a strong employee — and did retain you for three years, doing work you didn’t love and for an uncompetitive salary. You both got something you wanted, and it’s not disloyal to move on when the arrangement doesn’t serve your interests in the same way anymore.

4. Who should initiate a LinkedIn connection, manager or employee?

Who should be the one to initiate a LinkedIn connection: boss or employee? I’m the boss, and I’m connected to all of my direct reports (including one I hired yesterday who sent a request to connect this morning) but one person. Should I reach out to that team member to connect? Should I assume she’ll connect with me if she wants to? Finally, is a boss/direct report connection a good or bad thing overall?

I’d say it’s mostly a neutral thing, assuming neither of you is using LinkedIn in weird ways (like bombarding your connections with crappy articles or constantly doing those one-click skill endorsements for every random skill that pops up).

But if you want to play it safe, wait for the employee to initiate the connection. Not everyone wants to be connected to their boss on LinkedIn while they’re still working together; some people will worry that you’ll pay attention to their activity there and in particular that you might notice indications that they’re job-searching (like a sudden flurry of activity, which doesn’t necessarily indicate that but people worry about it regardless).

5. What kind of bag should I carry to interviews?

I am a graduating high school senior, and I’m applying to some summer jobs and internships. I plan on bringing extra copies of my resume and such to the interviews I have scheduled. The issue is that I’m not sure which bag to use. I really only have two bags, my backpack for school and a tote bag that has an (appropriate) quote on it in pride flag colors. Should I buy a new, more professional bag? Is one of those two okay? Should I carry only a folder?

It’s fine to just carry a folder or portfolio (which is the more professional but not strictly necessary version of a folder).

And really, since we’re talking about summer jobs and internships, the backpack or tote would be fine in a lot of cases too (and the tote has the side benefit of possibly screening out non-inclusive employers) but I’m giving you the most professionally conservative version of the answer.

At some point you might want to get a more professional bag for interviews — ideally by the time you’re interviewing for post-college jobs — but for right now, a folder should be fine!

With the Friends reunion out on HBO Max, there’s never been a better time to talk about the most under-examined element of the hit sitcom: the iconic ska music that sometimes played for a few seconds in between scenes. That’s an idea and a peg, right? I think it’s good enough. We reached out to the cast and crew behind the show to reminisce about the sound that changed the way we experienced establishing shots of Manhattan apartment buildings.

“So No One Told You Scene Transitions Were Gonna Sound This Way”
1996 was known as the “Summer of Ska,” and America could not get enough of the upstrokes, downbeats, and punk flavor of third-wave ska bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sublime, and Reel Big Fish.

STEPHEN THOMAS ERLEWINE (MUSIC CRITIC): Your premise is way off here… the ska transition music in Friends started playing during season one, well before the “Summer of Ska” you’re referencing. You should have done this research yourself. Also, hold on, your piece is specifically about this one type of interstitial music? You do realize that only represented a tiny proportion of the music they used between scenes on Friends, and most people aren’t even going to remember it. Are you recording this? I haven’t given you permission to record our conversation.

“Your Job’s a Joke, You’re Broke, Your Scene-Transition Music Is Ska”
The young cast of Friends was suddenly rich and famous — but they still had to share the spotlight with the ska transition music. Handling the conflict wasn’t easy.

“I’ll Be There for Ska”
Everyone in America wanted to learn how to play the ska transition music on guitar so they could impress other single freshmen in their college dorms, but they needed help.

LAURA (GUITAR CENTER EMPLOYEE): The easiest way to play ska guitar is to make barre chords with your fretting hand and play the bottom strings with upstrokes, like this. Yeah, I love Friends. Ska transition music? Hmm… I remember a lot of ’90s-alternative-sounding stuff, maybe some jazzy songs. I guess there was some ska, now that you mention it.

ADAM CHASE (EXECUTIVE STORY EDITOR): I’m actually a different person named Adam Chase. It’s not that unusual of a name, so you might want to try a method other than just flipping through a phone book. But, yeah, sorry, I never worked on Friends.

“Because You’re There for Me, Too (Ska)”
Almost two decades after Friends left the airwaves, the interstitial ska music remains the key part of its legacy. This is most evident in the crowds of people who gather in Greenwich Village at 90 Bedford Street due to the building’s association with that transition music and for no other reason.

AARON BARRETT (LEAD SINGER, REEL BIG FISH): [Straight to voicemail.]

FRED STOLLER (STU, A COOK WHO WORKED WITH MONICA): How did you get this number? Are you recording this?

Now that we’re completely past the heavy rainfall, I want to take a look back at our totals since the beginning on May 16. From that day through Wednesday, most weather stations in the Houston region recorded at least a trace of rain, and often more than 1 inch a day. Here are the 14-day totals for the upper Texas coast. Areas in white show 20 inches of accumulation, Barney purple is more than 10 inches.

In addition to ending our region’s emerging drought, another effect of these rains has been cooler-than-normal temperatures for the month of May. Our monthly average temperature is running about 1 degree below normal, and our average high has been in the low 80s. This will soon change as June is around the corner, but it has been kind of nice.

Thursday

Houston enjoyed sunny weather on Wednesday, and that should continue today with a mix of sunshine and clouds. A few very scattered showers will be possible this afternoon as highs crank up into the upper 80s, but the vast majority of us will remain dry. Overnight temperatures will be muggy, with lows only dropping into the mid-70s.

Friday

Conditions should be similar on Friday, with continued partly sunny skies and highs pushing into the upper 80s. Sometime beginning Friday evening, or possibly not until the overnight hours into Saturday morning, rain chances will start to increase in response to an upper-level disturbance.

Saturday

Said rain chances will likely peak on Saturday morning, although we can’t be sure about timing. Overall accumulations should be higher north of Interstate 10, with 0.5 to 1 inches of rain, whereas most areas closer to the coast will likely see less than one-half inch. A few of these thunderstorms could be strong. After the rains I expect at least partly sunny skies Saturday afternoon as a (very) weak front pushes into Houston and off the coast. Highs will be in the mid-80s.

Right now I have Sunday as the pick of the litter for the weekend. With a smidge of drier air, partly to mostly sunny skies, and highs in the mid-80s, this should be a really nice day for outdoor activities. Rain chances should be near zero.

Memorial Day and next week

Memorial Day should see a continuation of Sunday’s weather, albeit with perhaps a bit more humidity. For now I’d expect highs in the mid-80s, with a mix of sunshine and clouds. Some rain chances return on Tuesday, but for now our confidence in the forecast at that point is pretty low, and it may be Wednesday or Thursday before any rain really returns to the forecast. Most of next week will probably see highs in the upper 80s.

The purple cover also adds a nice feminine touch. Written by a woman for women. Don’t worry, she had her manuscript reviewed by the NFL, CFL, and the NCAA according to the back cover. This is comforting since for all we know the author was too emotional to get her facts straight.
