Hola VPN Sells Users’ Bandwidth, Founder Confirms

by Andy

hola-logoFaced with increasing local website censorship and Internet services that restrict access depending on where a user is based, more and more people are turning to specialist services designed to overcome such limitations.

With prices plummeting to just a few dollars a month in recent years, VPNs are now within the budgets of most people. However, there are always those who prefer to get such services for free, without giving much consideration to how that might be economically viable.

One of the most popular free VPN/geo-unblocking solutions on the planet is operated by Israel-based Hola. It can be added to most popular browsers in seconds and has an impressive seven million users on Chrome alone. Overall the company boasts 46 million users of its service.

Now, however, the company is facing accusations from 8chan message board operator Fredrick Brennan. He claims that Hola users’ computers were used to attack his website without their knowledge, and that was made possible by the way Hola is setup.

“When a user installs Hola, he becomes a VPN endpoint, and other users of the Hola network may exit through his internet connection and take on his IP. This is what makes it free: Hola does not pay for the bandwidth that its VPN uses at all, and there is no user opt out for this,” Brennan says.

This means that rather than having their IP addresses cloaked behind a private server, free Hola users are regularly exposing their IP addresses to the world but associated with other people’s traffic – no matter what that might contain.

hola-big

While this will come as a surprise to many, Hola says it has never tried to hide the methods it employs to offer a free service.

Speaking with TorrentFreak, Hola founder Ofer Vilenski says that his company offers two tiers of service – the free option (which sees traffic routed between Hola users) and a premium service, which operates like a traditional VPN.

However, Brennan says that Hola goes a step further, by selling Hola users’ bandwidth to another company.

“Hola has gotten greedy. They recently (late 2014) realized that they basically have a 9 million IP strong botnet on their hands, and they began selling access to this botnet (right now, for HTTP requests only) at https://luminati.io,” the 8chan owner says.

TorrentFreak asked Vilenski about Brennan’s claims. Again, there was no denial.

“We have always made it clear that Hola is built for the user and with the user in mind. We’ve explained the technical aspects of it in our FAQ and have always advertised in our FAQ the ability to pay for non-commercial use,” Vilenski says.

And this is how it works.

Hola generates revenue by selling a premium service to customers through its Luminati brand. The resources and bandwidth for the Luminati product are provided by Hola users’ computers when they are sitting idle. In basic terms, Hola users get their service for free as long as they’re prepared to let Hola hand their resources to Luminati for resale. Any users who don’t want this to happen can buy Hola for $5 per month.

Fair enough perhaps – but how does Luminati feature in Brennan’s problems? It appears his interest in the service was piqued after 8chan was hit by multiple denial of service attacks this week which originated from the Luminati / Hola network.

“An attacker used the Luminati network to send thousands of legitimate-looking POST requests to 8chan’s post.php in 30 seconds, representing a 100x spike over peak traffic and crashing PHP-FPM,” Brennan says.

Again, TorrentFreak asked Vilenski for his input. Again, there was no denial.

“8chan was hit with an attack from a hacker with the handle of BUI. This person then wrote about how he used the Luminati commercial VPN network to hack 8chan. He could have used any commercial VPN network, but chose to do so with ours,” Vilenski explains.

“If 8chan was harmed, then a reasonable course of action would be to obtain a court order for information and we can release the contact information of this user so that they can further pursue the damages with him.”

Vilenski says that Hola screens users of its “commercial network” (Luminati) prior to them being allowed to use it but in this case “BUI” slipped through the net. “Adjustments” have been made, Hola’s founder says.

“We have communicated directly with the founder of 8Chan to make sure that once we terminated BUI’s account they’ve had no further problems, and it seems that this is the case,” Vilenski says.

It is likely the majority of Hola’s users have no idea how the company’s business model operates, even though it is made fairly clear in its extensive FAQ/ToS [see note below]. Installing a browser extension takes seconds and if it works as advertised, most people will be happy.

Whether this episode will affect Hola’s business moving forward is open to question but for those with a few dollars to spend there are plenty of options in the market. Until then, however, those looking for free options should read the small print before clicking install.

Update: It appears that Hola only recently changed/edited their FAQ to add in the details about Luminati. We have asked the company to tell us exactly when those changes were made. Updates when they arrive.

10 Real Victims Of The CIA’s MKULTRA Program

by JFrater

Project MKULTRA is one of the most famous undertakings relating to the CIA’s efforts toward mass mind control. There were many different tests conducted as a part of the project, including some conducted on volunteers, inmates, and unsuspecting targets. The project involved several different drugs—most famously LSD—and the participants involved had very different reactions to […]

Someone stole a truck filled with copies of Nintendo's new game

by Lucy England

Nintendo SplatoonSomebody really wanted to get their hands on Nintendo's Splatoon game for Wii U.

Ars Technica reports that a truck full of copies of the shooter game was stolen while on its way from Nintendo's European warehouse to deliver the games to video game chain GAME.

The haul included GAME's allocation of the special edition Splatoon Amiibo, the retailer said, which comes with a rare Squid Inkling Amiibo figure.

Splatoon Amiibo

Sadly, Nintendo fans in the UK that ordered their special edition Splatoon from GAME now won't get it in time for the 29th May launch, and GAME won't be replenishing their stock. Instead, they can get the ordinary edition of the game and a $10 refund, or bite the bullet and cancel their pre-order.

Whether or not the thieves targeted the truck intentionally, they came away with a pretty good haul. According to an Ars Technica report, at last count Nintendo had sold over 10 million Amiibo figures, and a gold Mario version only available in limited edition from Walmart in the US sold for $100 (£65) on eBay.

Why George Pataki’s Candidacy Is Virtually Hopeless In Two Charts

by Harry Enten

So what’s wrong with George Pataki, the former governor of New York? Why shouldn’t he run for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination? Martin O’Malley, who’s hoping to win the prize for
“presidential candidate most likely to put the sleeping pill industry out of business” might not like the competition. There’s also the fact that Pataki hasn’t been part of the political conversation since “Friends” ended.

But even if neither of those things was true, Pataki, who’s announcing his White House bid Thursday, has one huge problem: Ideologically, he’s an old-school Republican (i.e., liberal) running in a modern GOP (i.e., very conservative). He is more moderate than any recent Republican nominee and is the most moderate candidate in the 2016 Republican field, according to our aggregated ideological scores.20 Pataki is, among other things, in favor of abortion rights and gay marriage. He’s somewhat of an environmentalist.

(Barely) to the left of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose candidacy is all but dead, is not the place you want to be given that a plurality of Republicans believe Christie is not conservative enough.

Pataki’s ideological score looks more like Richard Nixon’s, and Pataki would probably have had better luck running to replace Nixon rather than President Obama.

According to the General Social Survey, 57 percent of Republicans identified as moderate or liberal in 1974. Since then, that figure has steadily declined to 43 percent in 1994 (when Pataki won the governorship of New York) to only 35 percent in 2014. That’s large enough to be part of a winning coalition in a primary, but not enough to win.

Human Claw Machine

by John Farrier

Claw arcade game machines are good for only one thing: eating children. They rarely pick up any prizes because the claws are too weak to hold any object heavier than a feather.

This variation, though, looks more profitable. It requires a human child for operation. Go get one. I'm not going to ask where you got it. Just get one and come back.

Once you have the child, strap it into the harness. The child's arms, though weak compared to an adult's, are strong enough to grasp a large amount of loot.

Tender = Tinder and the Modern Dating Scene in a Nutshell [Video]

To comment on the current dating “market,” four students from Leiden University created “Tender,” an art installation that uses a piece of meat to “swipe right” automatically on a simulated version of the Tinder dating app. Yep, it seems that this is what the “meat market” is all about these days.

Star Trek Enterprise Desk: Boldly Sit Where You’ve Never Sat Before

by Conner Flynn

Super-Fan Builds has done again. They truly make geek dreams come true. How would you like to have this Star Trek Enterprise desk and chair in your home or office? I would never get any work done, because I would be too busy zipping around, pretending I’m going to warp speed.

Prop maker Tim Baker and his crew built this USS Enterprise desk as a saucer section with a matching chair that sits between the warp nacelles. It’s based on the TOS version of the good ship. Super-fan Jack Geiger is the lucky guy who gets to helm her every day now. She’s a good ship who will always bring you home.

Hey Jack, make sure you use coasters.

Netflix Now Accounts for 36.5% of Peak Internet Traffic -

A new analysis of Internet data indicates that Netflix now accounts for 36.5% of Internet traffic in North America during peak usage hours. According to the latest Sandvine breakdown of user behavior, the sharp climb in Netflix usage continues to coincide, rather un-coincidentally, with a notable drop in BitTorrent traffic. BitTorrent now accounts for 6.3% of total traffic in North America, and 8.5% in Latin America, notes the hardware vendor.

The study notes that YouTube comprised 15.6% of peak downstream Internet traffic, while web browsing was 6%, Facebook 2.7%, Amazon Instant Video 2.0% and Hulu 1.9%. Sling TV accounted for less than 1% of peak downstream traffic.

According to Sandvine, during the season five premiere of "Game of Thrones," HBO s two streaming properties (HBOGO and HBONOW) accounted for 4.1% of traffic on one US fixed network; an increase of over 300% of their average levels. HBO Now currently sees just 0.7% of peak total downstream traffic, likely due to the fact it's a new offering only exclusively being offered by Cablevision and Apple.

Another notable bump in traffic occurred during Activision s March 31 release of the "Ascendance" DLC for "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare," which accounted for 12% of Internet traffic on one North American fixed network on that date, said the report.

On the audio front, Sandvine notes that Pandora radio continues to lead in bandwidth share, consuming 3.47% of peak downstream traffic. That's followed by Spotify (1.03%), SoundCloud (0.76%), iHeartRadio (0.68%) and Deezer (0.58%).

Lenovo invented a crazy smartphone that can project apps right in front of you

by Lisa Eadicicco

LenovoSmartCast.JPG

Lenovo wants you to not only use apps on your smartphone, but on the table, walls, and other surfaces all around you too.

At its Tech World conference, the company showed off a concept smartphone currently being called Smart Cast.

The phone comes with a built-in laser projector and infrared motion detector so that it can project images and apps in front of you that you can actually interact with.

For example, you can project a touch screen or virtual keyboard onto a table, or you can just use to projector to turn your wall into a movie theater, as Lenovo notes. You can also project a certain app onto your wall or other surface while using a separate app on your phone.

Lenovo showcased what the device can do by bringing famous pianist Lang Lang out on stage to play a virtual piano that the phone projected onto the table in front of him.

LenovoSmartCastGif1

After that, Lang Lang played an actual piano while the phone project a full-sized page of sheet music right in front of him.LenovoSmartCastGIF2

It's an interesting concept, but there's no telling when or if  this will actually become a real product. Lenovo's phone isn't the first to come with a built-in projector either — Samsung's Galaxy Beam smartphone has one too.

But what makes Lenovo's stand out is how well the projector seems to work with the motion sensor based on the demo, which means you would actually be able to interact with the apps and images that are projected rather than just looking at them.

The 10 Greatest Pinball Machines of All Time

D G

Pinball Circus looks awesome.

Throughout my youth, I played video games rather voraciously. I was, as a friend dubbed me, a Nintend-whore. If it was released by Nintendo between the years of 1985 and 1995, I either begged my parents for it, worked my butt off mowing lawns to afford it, or merely coveted it with every shred of my soul. To this day, there are over a dozen NES games I can defeat through sense memory alone. Despite that, however, I cannot describe myself as a "gamer." This is because, sometime around 1997 (about the time side-scrolling video games gave way to the more elaborate 3-D type), I checked out of video games altogether. To this day, I have been baffled and overwhelmed by newer video games, finding them far too elaborate, too involved, and too expensive to get into. I don't have 100 hours to devote to a Halo game. My patience wears thin if a game is more complicated than, say, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Continue reading "The 10 Greatest Pinball Machines of All Time" >
