’80s Teen Comedy ‘License to Drive’ Getting a Female-Driven Reboot

by Hoai-Tran Bui
Corey

I loved this movie for some reason.

Maybe all the Coreys?

License To Drive Remake

Two female leads will be getting their License to Drive.

The ’80s teen comedy originally starring the Two Coreys, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, is getting a gender-bent reboot courtesy of producer John Davis, recently behind big-screen reboots like The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Victor Frankenstein. No word yet on whether the movie will bring back Heather Graham, who made her feature film debut in the 1988 film, for a cameo.

Davis is developing a female-led reboot of License to Drive under 20th Century Fox, according to Deadline. Fox has brought on writers Alish Brophy and Scott Miles (Girl Problems) to develop the remake, which is being described as a “female version of Superbad,” Deadline reports.

The original film was a pretty standard teen coming-of-age-comedy, about a boy who fails his driving test and sneaks out of the house and borrows his dad’s car to party with the girl of his dreams. And, in the vein of ’80s teen movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the main character (Haim) smugly breaks the fourth wall to introduce his night of debauchery. “What can go wrong?” Haim’s Les Anderson intones to the camera for no reason.

Here’s the synopsis for the original film below:

Teenager Les Anderson (Corey Haim) thinks his life can’t get any worse after he flunks his driver’s exam, but he’s wrong. Even though he didn’t receive his license, Les refuses to break his date with the cool Mercedes Lane (Heather Graham), and he decides to lift his family’s prize luxury car for the occasion. Unfortunately, Mercedes sneaks some booze along and passes out drunk, and a confused Les makes the bad decision of enlisting his rebellious friend, Dean (Corey Feldman), to help.

There’s no more information about who will play the two female leads, or the possible male love interest that will replace Graham’s character (though it would be wild if they cast a female love interest instead). It’s possible that Feldman or Graham could make a cameo in the film as well, as many of these newfangled reboots adore making homages to their ’80s roots. Although the film may choose to not reference the original cast, due to Haim’s tragic early death in 2010.

The movie License to Drive has arguably less of a legacy than its former teen actors. The Coreys were beloved as child actors, but the sudden fame and success at a young age led them to a tumultuous life of drugs and rehab. While Feldman seems to have found his peace with music, Haim dealt with struggles for much of his adult life until his passing. There’s ostensibly a better system in place for child actors today than there were in the ’80s, but I hope that whoever are cast in the female-led License to Drive will go down a better road than its former leads.

The Sisters Fight Back In Clip From Netflix’s ‘What Happened To Monday’

by Dan Wickline

One of the things I like about Netflix’s way of doing films and series is that it allows them to take risks on stories that may not seem very commercial initially. What Happened To Monday is one of those strange concepts that might not be made if it wasn’t for new streaming service outlets. The film is a dystopian science-fiction thriller from writers Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson and director Tommy Wirkola. It stars Willem Dafoe, Glenn Close, and Noomi Rapace.

Whatever Happened To Monday

The idea of the film is that the world is overpopulated and families are limited to one child each. Then there are a set of identical septuplets who are being hunted by the government and must avoid fighting among themselves while trying to find out what happened to one of their own.

The clip below shows that they’ve been hiding for a long time, that they have built in “safe rooms”, but now the government seems to know about it and have come for them. The siblings fight back in a brutal way. They’re not fighters, but fear and self-preservation are strong motivators to fight back.

This reminds me of classic science fiction concepts from the fifties and sixties where someone or a group of people must rebel against restrictions placed on society for the betterment of all. In the same vein as George Orwell‘s 1984 or Ray Bradbury‘s Fahrenheit 451…I have no idea if this will be even close to as good as those, but it has that feel.

In the UK, this film is called Seven Sisters.

The film makes its debut on Netflix on August 18th. I’ve put the full trailer below the clip.

Netflix’s Ozark Renewed For A Second Season

by Joshua Davison
Corey

I like it.

Breaking from Variety, the Jason Bateman and Laura Linney money-laundering drama Ozark has been renewed for a second season on Netflix. The show follows lead character Marty, a financier played by Bateman, and his wife, Wendy, played by Linney, as he moves the both of them abruptly from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks after his money laundering scheme has taken a sharp turn with a Mexican drug lord gunning for him.

The first season consisted of 10 hour-long episodes, and the second season is reported to be the same.

The series was created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams, who doubled as executive producers on the series. Jason Bateman himself directed a number of the episodes from the series and is also credited with an executive producer title. Chris Mundy was the lead writer and is also granted executive producer status.

The show has received a lot of positive reception and praised for its tension and unexpected plot turns. It depicts a lot of debauchery and self-destruction on the part of the characters, and it uses these to its advantage.

I’ve yet to watch Ozark myself, but a Jason Bateman-led crime drama sounds like something I’d quite enjoy whenever I get around to it. Castlevania and Game of Thrones have my attention right now, with Defenders getting closer and exciting more every day (Luke Caaaaaaage!).

Since this is just breaking, a release date for season 2 of Ozark has yet to be set.

You know, since we are on the subject of Jason Bateman and shows being renewed on Netflix, let’s talk about season 5 of Arrested Development, huh? Jason? Ron HowardMitch Hurwitz? When are we getting that? I know Bateman, Jeffery Tambor, and Alia Shawkat are particularly busy these days, but I think we can work this out.

Game of Thrones’ Re-Introduced an Old Weapon – Here’s Why Valyrian Steel is Important to the Endgame

by Ben Pearson

Game of Thrones dagger

As armies raid castles, dragons burn soldiers, and Cersei Lannister schemes away in King’s Landing, it won’t be long before everyone realizes that two most valuable resources in Game of Thrones‘ Westeros are Valyrian steel and dragonglass. Those are the only known substances that can kill White Walkers, so when the Night King and his army of the dead arrive, nothing else will matter.

Jon Snow is busy mining as much dragonglass as he can from the caves of Dragonstone, and this week’s episode re-introduced a weapon that’s worth talking a bit more about: Littlefinger’s dagger. Where have we seen that before, and why is it so important? Join me below, where we’ll also run down all of the Valyrian steel pieces we know about on the show.

A Brief History of Littlefinger’s Dagger

Back in season one, an assassin attempted to murder a comatose Bran Stark in Winterfell with this dagger, which has a dragonbone hilt. Catelyn Stark managed to stop the assassin (with an assist from Bran’s direwolf Summer), and, furious, she rode to King’s Landing to show her husband Ned Stark, who was serving as Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon at the time. There, Littlefinger dramatically reveals that he once owned the dagger, but that he lost it to Tyrion Lannister in a bet during a tourney on Joffrey’s name day: Littlefinger supposedly bet on Jaime Lannister to beat Loras Tyrell in a joust, but when Loras won, the blade went to Tyrion.

Catelyn leaves the blade with Ned in King’s Landing and heads for home, but when she captures Tyrion at the crossroads inn along the way, she inadvertently kicks off the entire War of the Five Kings. When Ned is taken captive by Cersei, Littlefinger takes the blade for his own, and we finally saw it again in last night’s episode. Baelish gives it to Bran, who subsequently passes it on to Arya, who will surely put it to good use in the Great War to Come.

But here’s the thing: for Littlefinger’s story about how he lost the knife to be true, that would mean that Tyrion needed to bet against his own brother in a joust, and that would never happen. Tyrion denies owning the dagger multiple times, and in the books, he and Jaime deduce that it was Joffrey who took the blade from Robert and hired the assassin to finish off Bran. But the whole situation is still a little murky, and some think Littlefinger hired the assassin himself so he could frame Tyrion for the crime. Maybe Bran, the new Three-Eyed Raven, can shed some light on all of this for us with a flashback or two.

Longclaw

All The Valyrian Steel Swords We Know About

We know Valyrian steel will be supremely important moving forward, and we also know it’s exceedingly rare. There are a few hundred scattered throughout the richest and most notable families in Westeros, but we’ve only actually seen a handful of them appear on the show. Here’s a list of all the ones we know about:

  • Littlefinger’s (now Arya’s) dagger
  • Jon Snow’s Longclaw, the ancestral sword of House Mormont, which was given to Jon by Jeor Mormont (Jorah’s father and the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch)
  • Brienne of Tarth’s Oathkeeper, one of two swords created by melting down Ned Stark’s sword Ice
  • Jaime Lannister’s Widow’s Wail, the other sword melted down from Ice, which was initially given to Joffrey as a gift
  • Heartsbane, the ancestral sword of House Tarly, which Samwell Tarly stole from his father’s home before heading to Oldtown

You can bet on all of those blades becoming hugely important as the show approaches its endgame.

Here’s one last thing to chew on: the White Walkers are technically dead, right? So if that’s the case, can Arya use her Faceless Man magic to pose as the Night King’s number two guy and suddenly slash the Night King to pieces? That’d be a hell of a way for him to go down.

Mets Pitcher Noah Syndergaard Looks Equally At Home In Westeros And The MCU

by Jude Terror

Though it may have been easy to miss with all the chaotic action during the battle that ended last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, raven-eyed viewers know that chaos is a ladder. On the rungs of that ladder was Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who cameoed as a member of the Lannister army to pitch a spear at a Dothraki horseman:

Syndergaard is known not only for his athletic skills, but also for happening to look a lot like Norse God and Marvel cinematic universe character Thor. The Mets even teamed up with Marvel earlier this year for some cross promotion based on that link.

Well, having their pitcher burned alive by a dragon isn’t the worst thing that happened to the Mets on Sunday. They lost to the Dodgers in an 8-0 shutout.

With Thor: Ragnarok (starring Chris Hemsworth, not Noah Syndergaard) set to hit theaters in November, did Marvel and HBO miss the opportunity for some good old fashioned cross-promotional action? That may be the case, but we certainly weren’t going to miss the chance to get those cross-promotional search engine keywords into our headline.

Netflix buys Mark Millar’s Millarworld

by Anthony

Netflix Inc. announced today it acquired Millarworld, the comic book publishing powerhouse founded by Mark Millar, the legendary creator of such iconic characters and stories as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan, and one of the most important voices in comics.

Together, Netflix and Millar will bring Millarworld’s portfolio of critically and fan-acclaimed character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label.

The acquisition, the first ever by Netflix, is a natural progression in the company’s effort to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters and timeless, interwoven fictional worlds. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed.

“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

“This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

Millar, who runs Millarworld with his wife Lucy Millar, is one of the most consistent hitmakers in the graphic novel and comics world. In his eight years at Marvel, he developed the comic books and story arcs that inspired the first Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War, and Logan (Wolverine), which collectively grossed over $3 billion in worldwide box office. Since Millarworld was started, the company and its co-creators have given birth to eighteen published character worlds, of which three, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman, have yielded theatrical films that together have grossed nearly $1 billion in global box office.

“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with,” added Sarandos. “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

‘Mindhunter’ Trailer Shows The Early Days Of Serial Killer Profiling

by Dan Wickline
Corey

Hear about this a while ago. Looked cool.

Mindhunter, an upcoming Netflix series that dives into the early days of what would become criminal profiling, is based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas. The series is set in 1979 and focuses on two FBI agents, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), who interview imprisoned serial killers to try to solve ongoing cases.

The agents face opposition, as no one sees the benefit of understanding the criminally insane back in that era, even decades after killers like Charles Manson did their thing. The whole concept of criminal profiling grew from these studies and are now a regular method of hunting serial killers…even the term serial killer came from these studies.

Mindhunter

David Fincher (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) is on board to direct three episodes along with Andrew Douglas (The Amityville Horror) and Asif Kapadia (Sena) doing two each. The rest of the cast includes Anna Torv (Fringe), Tobias Lindholm (The Hunt) and Cotter Smith (The Americans). It has already been renewed for a second season.

Mindhunter premiers October 13th on Netflix.

Marijuana In The NFL – League Open To Study Medicinal Usage

by Dan Wickline

One of the things about the NFL that had me curious was how they could fine / suspend someone for the use of marijuana in a state where it is legal for recreational or medicinal use. I know that there are substances that are banned because, while not illegal, are considered performance enhancing or a masking agent for other substances. Marijuana is neither a masking agent nor a performance enhancer. Yet it can still get you in trouble with the league for using marijuana in the NFL.

Marijuana In The NFL

A letter,  first reported Tuesday by The Washington Post, may be the first indication that things could change. In the letter, the NFL has indicated it is willing to work with the NFL Players Association to study the use of marijuana as a potential pain management tool for players. This letter was confirmed as well by ESPN.

The NFLPA has not responded to the offer and is currently conducting it’s own study. Their executive director DeMaurice Smith told WAPO previously that the union was working up a proposal on a less punitive approach to recreational marijuana use, saying at the time: “I do think that issues of addressing it more in a treatment and less punitive measure is appropriate. I think it’s important to look at whether there are addiction issues. And I think it’s important to not simply assume recreation is the reason it’s being used.”

Marijuana is still derisive issue in the country. 29 states have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes with 22 NFL teams residing in those states. 8 of those states have legalized recreational marijuana. Yet the federal laws still forbid it and the current Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, is trying to ramp up enforcement of those federal laws. The medicinal step was the first one most states took because it was the easiest to sell to the public that was against the use. But now the country is becoming more accepting of marijuana and the NFL will have to deal with the discrepancy between their rules and the state laws. By going the medical approach, they can stop testing without approving recreational use.

Pumped for Ready Player One.

Ready Player One trailer breakdown

Every week in /Answers, we attempt to answer a new pop culture-related question. Since the entire /Film team is still recovering from their Comic-Con 2017 hangovers (read all of our coverage here), this week’s edition asks “What piece of Comic-Con news excited you the most this year?” As always, we have submissions from the /Film writing crew and podcast team.

Ethan Anderton: Ready Player One Teaser Trailer

Though the movie is already facing backlash from those who think Ernest Cline is a bad writer and others who think this obsession with nostalgia for decades past and all the properties that were popular during them is ridiculous, I couldn’t help but be extremely excited for Ready Player One when the first trailer debuted during the Warner Bros. Pictures panel in Hall H.

When this trailer played for the first time, I was so caught off guard and excited by the appearance of The Iron Giant that I audibly said “Holy shit,” and I felt energized as hell when the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future came plowing on to the screen during that big race sequence.

As someone who hasn’t even read the book that’s being adapted, all I have to go on are the basic details that I know about the story, and it looks like a fascinating and fun way to combine several different facets of pop culture into a single blockbuster. Even if Ernest Cline’s writing is as bad as some suggest, we’re talking about Steven Spielberg directing this movie here, a director who knows how to handle genres like this and was even involved with many of the properties named in the book. This is a director who doesn’t take projects like this lightly, and I have confidence that he knows what he’s doing. I’m looking forward to seeing even more from this movie as the March 2018 release date gets closer.

Hoai-Tran Bui: Justice League Trailer

I had almost given up hope on the DC Extended Universe. But then Wonder Woman lit the fire for DC Comics heroes again, and the new trailer for Justice League hammered in that word again and again: hope.

Yes, the production seems to be fueling a never-ending cycle of behind-the-scenes trouble; yes, director Zack Snyder has left the film with Joss Whedon stepping in for extensive reshoots; and yes, they’re going to have to CGI Henry Cavill’s mustache out in post-production. But the new trailer for Justice League kind of, almost, wipes away all my concerns about the movie.

Why? Not just because it’s very Diana-centric, with the Amazons making an appearance once again, though that is a big factor, but because it embodies the aspirational nature of DC superheroes that Wonder Woman brought back. Here, Superman is an icon beloved by all (never mind there was never a precedent for it in either Man of Steel or Batman v Superman), and the heroes are thrown together by fate to save the world — not because they should, but because they want to. It reminds me of the heroes in the Justice League animated series that I grew up loving.

To me, DC heroes are mythological and inspirational. While Marvel may specialize in snappy and flawed heroes who always have a punchline to throw alongside their punch, I want — and hope — that DC Films will start to become the antithesis to this not by becoming grittier, but becoming more genuine. That hero moment that is so often made light of in Marvel movies (see this excellent video essay about how Marvel’s need to subvert genuine moments becomes too glib),was a pivotal moment that made Wonder Woman great, and is what makes me hope that Justice League and the rest of the DCEU will follow suit.

Jacob Hall: Avengers: Infinity War Footage

This was my first Comic-Con and I quickly developed a love/hate relationship with the whole experience. I ultimately had a lot of fun, but I had to work really, really hard to have that fun. However, I did learn that there’s a reason people wait in line a day in advance to get into the Marvel Studios panel and why they’re routinely the “winners” of the con every single year – they put on one hell of a show.

I know I’m being marketed to. I know I’m just getting to see footage from movies that regular folks will get to see just a few months (if not minutes) later. But Marvel knows this too, so they create an intoxicating atmosphere that makes being in the room worth it. Recounting the experience later, it felt more like a rock concert than a series of panels and footage presentations. There’s a showmanship at work here that no other panel came close to touching.

And after presentations based around Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, Marvel Studios gave the packed Hall H crowd exactly what they wanted: footage from Avengers: Infinity War. I don’t know if this trailer will ever be released to the general public (and I doubt it, since it feels a little cobbled together from whatever they happened to have finished at the time), but it was..well, cool. Just plain cool. Just when I thought I was over seeing the various Marvel heroes gathered together on the big screen, this footage offered a glimpse of Star-Lord leaping over wreckage via a series of magical platforms conjured by Doctor Strange. This collision of worlds and powers, and the mere sight of Thanos wrecking our heroes in hand-to-hand combat instead of sitting on his stupid space throne, turned out to be exactly what I needed to see from this movie. I’m all-in.

Matt Groening Brings ‘Disenchantment’ To Netflix

by Dan Wickline

Netflix has ordered twenty episode of Matt Groening’s new adult animated comedy/fantasy series Disenchantment. Groening is of course the creator of such beloved animated series as The Simpsons and Futurama. The plan is for the streaming service to debut ten episodes at a time starting in 2018.

DisenchantmentThe series is set in a crumbling medieval kingdom called Dreamland, where we follow the misadventures of a hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. She and her traveling mates will come across ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses and lots of idiot humans.

Groening says of the new series:

Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.

The series will feature the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson (Bean), Nat Faxon (Elfo), and Eric Andre (Luci), along with John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery. Animation is being done by Rough Draft Studios (Futurama) and is produced by The ULULU Company for Netflix, with Matt Groening and Josh Weinstein (The Simpsons, Futurama) serving as executive producers.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Trailer: Hawkins, Indiana Is in Big Trouble [Comic Con 2017]

by Ethan Anderton

Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer

Fans have been waiting for a much closer look at the highly anticipated second season of Stranger Things ever since they finished binge watching the first season after it arrived last summer just before the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con. Now here we are one year later, and we have a brand new trailer to tease what’s in store for the small town of Hawkins, Indiana when the show returns to Netflix in October.

Below, watch the new Stranger Things season 2 trailer.

Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer

This trailer could not be more incredible. First of all, the use of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is absolutely brilliant, and while you wouldn’t think that such a tune would work all that well because it’s a pop song that inspires dancing, it blends with this footage so well.

But of course, the real appeal here is seeing what’s in store for Hawkins, Indiana. The side effects from Will Byers’ time spent in the Upside Down are getting worse, as he sees a giant monster coming closer to the twisted version of Hawkins that only he can see outside of the Upside Down. His visions are getting worse, and it seems to indicate that the Upside Down is starting to merge with the real Hawkins.

That final scene is the most important though, because we finally see that Eleven has indeed survived, and she appears to be back in the Upside Down, where she’s found a new entrance back into the real world. More and more portals are likely opening and will begin to absorb the town. How can it be stopped?

The official Stranger Things season 2 plot synopsis follows:

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demagorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

In 1953, MKUltra came to Hawkins, Indiana and began experimentation. In 1979, Police Chief Jim Hopper returns to Hawkins. On November 6, 1983 a young boy named Will Byers vanished. Two days later, Barbara Holland also vanished. A year after Will’s return, everything seems back to normal… but a darkness lurks just beneath the surface, threatening all of Hawkins.

Returning cast includes Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, Chelsea Talmadge as Carol and introducing Sadie Sink as Max, Dacre Montgomery as Billy, Linnea Berthelsen as Roman, Sean Astin as Bob Newby, Paul Reiser as Dr. Owens, Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman and Will Chase as Neil Mayfield.

The Duffer Brothers are directing the first two episodes, “Mad Max” and “The Boy Who Came Back To Life,” Shawn Levy is directing the next two episodes, “The Pumpkin Patch” and “The Palace”, the next two installments are being directed by Andrew Stanton titled “The Storm” and “The Pollywog”, Rebecca Thomas directed “The Secret Cabin” and The Duffer Brothers directed the last two installments of the season, “The Brain” and “The Lost Brother”.

Stranger Things season 2 premieres on October 27, 2017.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Trailer: The God of Thunder Needs a Team to Battle Cate Blanchett [Comic-Con 2017]

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

So good.

Thor Ragnarok Trailer

Now that we have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming out of the way, we’re down to just one more release from Marvel Studios, and it has the chance of being the best one yet. Though the aforementioned additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe were satisfying in their own way, the next adventure featuring The Avengers’ own God of Thunder looks surprisingly good.

Thor: Ragnarok released its first trailer back in April, letting Led Zeppelin drive the exciting, colorful, cosmic adventure from Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi. Now a new Thor: Ragnarok trailer gives us an even better glimpse at the Marvel sequel, which looks to be the best film in Thor’s own franchise to date.

Watch the new Thor Ragnarok trailer below.

Thor Ragnarok Trailer

This time, Chris Hemsworth finds himself in a position that he hasn’t been before as the Asgardian prince. He’s outmatched by Hela, the goddess of death played by Cate Blanchett, captured by the warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), forced to do battle with his Avengers buddy The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and he doesn’t have his trusty hammer Mjolnir or his long golden locks. What’s an Asgardian to do when faced with such insurmountable odds?

I could not be happier with how this trailer looks. The blend of comedy and bright, vibrant comic book action is incredible. The chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo is outstanding, especially now that Hulk has enough of a vocabulary to carry on a conversation.

Furthermore, Cate Blanchett looks like a villain who could rival Loki in greatness, while Jeff Goldblum spices things up by doing exactly what you would expect Jeff Goldblum to do. This easily looks like it will be Thor’s best adventure yet.

Oh, and here’s a brand new Thor: Ragnarok poster that look absolutely amazing:

Thor: Ragnarok also stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Karl Urban as Skurge, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, and director Taika Waititi himself as the motion-capture character Korg.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett). But first he must survive a deadly gladatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – The Incredible Hulk!”

Thor: Ragnarok arrives on November 3.

@midnight To End With 600th Episode

by Dan Wickline

Chris Hardwick is going to be able to go to bed a little earlier now as he, Comedy Central and Funny or Die have mutually agreed to bring the nightly social media driven comedy show @midnight to an end. Deadline is reporting that the series that is about to reach 600 episodes and has been on the air before the network lost both Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart will wrap things up on Friday August 4th, episode number 600.

@midnight

The show was a consistent rating performer for the network and was moved up a half hour each time they needed to fill in for a departing show like the Colbert Report and when the Nightly Show was cancelled. The show successfully highlighted comedians like Kyle Kinane, Ron Funches, Steve Agee, Nikki Glazer and more. They also featured Milana Vayntrub from the AT&T commercials who has now signed on to be Squirrel Girl in the New Warriors series.

Hardwick said in a statement:

@midnight has meant the world to me these last four years. It has been a dream to come to work 600 times to make inappropriate jokes about the Internet with my fellow comedian friends. I could not be more proud of this show, staff and crew and at the end of the day, I think we accomplished everything we wanted to accomplish. Spiritually it just feels like it ran its course — I’m not sure we had many more hashtag games in us (which may actually be a relief to anyone whose Twitter feed gets overrun every night). I owe such a huge debt of gratitude to Comedy Central and Kent for taking a chance on the show, always being great partners and allowing us to exit mutually, which is rarely a gift you are given in this business. I will certainly miss awarding POINTS! to people nightly, so please understand if you see me randomly shouting it at strangers in public after August 4th.

The are no immediate plans to make a new series to for the midnight slot on the network, but it’s possible that with Jordan Klepper getting the 11:30 slot, if the President Show gets renewed it could move to midnight.

‘Proud Mary’ Trailer: Taraji P. Henson is a Hit-Woman with a Mission

by Ben Pearson
Corey

Reminds me of Pete's wife Kate.

Proud Mary trailer

If you’ve been waiting to see Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) play a kick-ass hit-woman – and really, isn’t that all of us? – here’s some good news. The first trailer for Proud Mary has just arrived, and it showcases a film in which Henson does exactly that…and drinking some cognac while she’s at it.

Proud Mary trailer

Well, this slickly-edited trailer certainly isn’t afraid to embrace its title, using the Ike and Tina Turner cover version of the classic Creedence Clearwater Revival song. A couple of moments (gunshots, shell casing sounds, etc.) are even timed with the music, though I doubt we’re going to get a Baby Driver-esque interaction between the visuals and sound effects in the actual film. But I don’t fault filmmakers for not being as ambitious as Edgar Wright, and this works as a cool effect in this trailer.

We don’t get much in the way of plot in this trailer, which is much more interested in building an atmosphere and introducing us to the fastidious Mary (Henson) as she goes through the motions of getting ready for a hard day’s work. And boy, does she work hard – she even has some Alias-style wig work going on.

Babak Najafi is the director on this one, following his work on the Gerard Butler action sequel London Has Fallen and a few episodes of the Cinemax action series Banshee. The script comes from John Stuart Newman and Christian Swegal; this is their first feature film screenplay, but Newman previously wrote a staggering 805 episodes of the soap opera Days of Our Lives as well as a couple episodes of the new Get Shorty TV series.

Our own Peter Sciretta saw a bit of footage from this film at this year’s CinemaCon, and from what he saw, he said Proud Mary doesn’t appear to hold a candle to something like Atomic Blonde. But Dan Laustsen, the cinematographer of John Wick: Chapter 2Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water is the cinematographer on this film, so even if the action may not be comparable, it should at least look pretty great.

Here’s the film’s first teaser poster:

Proud Mary poster

Taraji P. Henson is Mary, a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad.

Proud Mary hits theaters in January 12, 2018.

HBO to Premiere Feature-Length Documentary on Steven Spielberg This October

by Jacob Hall

Steven Spielberg Documentary Coming From HBO

Steven Spielberg has been making great movies so consistently for so long that it sometimes feels like we take him for granted. Maybe a new documentary, titled Spielberg and coming to HBO later this year, can remind us that the man behind Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List is probably the greatest filmmaker of all time and that we should treasure his filmography. Heck, even his duds inspire interesting conversations.

HBO announced the feature-length documentary today, noting that it will premiere on October 7, 2017, when it will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand. Here’s their description of the doc, which will explore Spielberg’s entire life and career:

Steven Spielberg has built an unrivaled catalogue of groundbreaking films over the course of his nearly 50-year career. Charting the evolution of this iconic figure, Lacy draws on nearly 30 hours of exclusive interviews with the director, who opens up about his bittersweet childhood and lifelong obsession with moviemaking, his precocious early work as a TV “wunderkind,” his rise to fame through an incredible string of blockbusters, his later forays into more serious dramatic films, and the personal and professional relationships he’s cultivated through the years. […] The result is a remarkably intimate portrait that combines Spielberg’s compelling first-person narrative with an in-depth exploration of the creative process and craftsmanship that have set him apart, highlighting themes such as separation, reconciliation, patriotism, humanity and wonder, which recur throughout his work.

Spielberg is produced and directed by Susan Lacy, who has won 10 Emmy Awards for her television documentary work. With such an experienced director behind the camera, I hope this is more than a surface-level examination of Spielberg’s work. He’s been so famous and so scrutinized for so long that I worry most of the interesting anecdotes will be old news. However, the director is famously press-shy (he doesn’t even record audio commentaries) and if there are untold stories or unique revelations to be found, this could be a must-watch for movie fans.

The doc will be produced by Emma Pildes and Jessica Levin and edited by Deborah Peretz. The laundry list of talking heads interviewed for the film include J.J. Abrams, Christian Bale, Drew Barrymore, Cate Blanchett, Francis Ford Coppola, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Brian de Palma, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Dreyfuss, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, David Geffen, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Holly Hunter, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Ben Kingsley, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, Liam Neeson, Martin Scorsese, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Zemeckis.

‘The Tick’ Trailer: Amazon Brings the Big Blue Bug Back for a New Series

by Ethan Anderton

The Tick Trailer

Attempting to bring a little more comedy to the superhero genre, Amazon Studios is reviving The Tick for a new live-action series that will be available exclusively for Amazon Prime members.

Our first look at The Tick arrived last summer, but since then, we haven’t gotten much promotion for the show, which will arrive on Amazon in August. That changes today with the first trailer for the series that puts Guardians of the Galaxy and Shaun of the Dead supporting actor Peter Serafinowicz (who you might also know as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) in the big blue suit as The Tick. He’s just a big, goofy delight.

Watch The Tick trailer below.

The spirit of both the animated series and the previous live-action adaptation of The Tick is present here, but this series iteration has more shine to it, clearly looking like it has more of a cable budget instead of the cheaper network budget that FOX gave it back in the early 2000s. Beyond that, it looks to be just as silly as fans were hoping for, lining up with a tone akin to Men in Black, which makes sense since director Barry Sonnenfeld is an executive producer on the show. The pilot is directed by Transcendence helmer and Christopher Nolan’s trusty cinematographer Wally Pfister.

In addition to Peter Serfinowicz as The Tick, the series features Griffin Newman as his unlikely sidekick Arthur, whose moth wardrobe has been given a bit of a high tech upgrade in this series adaptation of the Ben Edlund comic, which debuted in 1988. The rest of the cast includes Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion).

Will this series be more successful than the short-lived live-action series from 2001? That series has since become a cult favorite, but if this new adaptation is loyal to the comics, it just might finally give fans the show they’ve been waiting for.

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, the new The Tick series follows an underdog accountant with zero powers who comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero called The Tick.

The Tick debuts on Amazon on August 25 and will have a big presence at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, so stay tuned.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spin-off ‘Mayans MC’ to Undergo Recasting and Reshoots

by Jack Giroux
Corey

Not a good start...

sons of anarchy spinoff

FX’s upcoming spin-off to one of its most popular shows, Sons of Anarchy, is about to go through some serious changes. Kurt Sutter and Elgin James‘ (Little Birds) series, Mayans MC, is going to recast some major roles and go through reshoots. The entire pilot, in fact, is going to be reshot.

Below, get the latest news on the Sons of Anarchy spin-off.

According to Variety, Sutter directed the original pilot, but he won’t handle directorial duties on the new one. The Sons of Anarchy creator is going to focus on writing instead. Norberto Barba, a new executive producer brought on board, is going to direct. Sutter commented on Twitter that FX is allowing for improvement: “This was the process for SOA. Shows Fox/FX’s commitment to series. Allows me and Elgin to improve cast, script, and direction!”

Sutter recast one of his hit series’ lead actors at the start as well. Scott Glenn originally played Clay Morrow, but his scenes were reshot with Ron Perlman in the role. The reshoots and casting of Perlman worked out just fine in the case of Sons of Anarchy. There’s confirmation of who’s being recast on Mayans MC, though.

Mayans MC currently stars JD PardoEdward James Olmos, and John Ortiz, to name a few. Sutter told Deadline he didn’t want to set the series “too close to the world we already know”:

It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand. I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that. It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn’t do anything to undermine.

Mayans MC is set after the events of Sons of Anarchy. The spin-off follows EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), a prospect in the Mayans MC charter who’s seeking vengeance against a local cartel. Unlike Sons of Anarchy, the show won’t take place in Northern California — it’s set at the California/Mexico border. We should maybe expect an appearance or two from a few members of SAMCRO, though.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Show is Coming from Netflix

by Jack Giroux

the Umbrella academy show

Netflix is working on an adaptation of a comic book from the frontman of the band My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way. The first issue of Way’s Dark Horse comic, The Umbrella Academy, was released in 2007. Since then, there was some talk of a movie at Universal, but the story, which is set in 1977, is now in development as a series at Netflix with Way and Jeremy Slater (Fox’s The Exorcist) involved.

Below, learn more about The Umbrella Academy show.

Way and artist Gabriel Bá‘s story is about a family of superheroes who possess strange powers. The comic is set in 1977 and is about a millionaire inventor – who’s really an alien in disguise – who adopts seven super-powered children to form a team.  Nine years after they parted ways, they have to team up to save their world, an alternate universe in which John F. Kennedy was never assassinated. According to Slash Report, an official announcement for the series might get made by Netflix at Comic Con. This year, the streaming giant will have a presence in Hall H with Bright and Death Note.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Umbrella Academy from Dark Horse:

In an inexplicable worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who’d previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, “To save the world.” Conceived and written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance), Umbrella Academy features interior art by Eisner-award winner Gabriel Ba, and is a multiple Eisner-award winner itself, as well as a New York Tiimes bestseller!

There’s some kooky stuff in the comic and hopefully Netflix and all involved will preserve that. For example, the leader of the group, Spaceboy, has his head is attached to the body of a Martian gorilla. Last year, Slater, who wrote the pilot, told Collider he did not want to “sand down some of those weird edges”:

I was really adamant about taking the job, but the only way I was going to do it was if I could make it weird and make it true to the spirit of the book. There’s a lot of weird shit in The Umbrella Academy, and it would be very easy to sand down some of those weird edges and make it more familiar to American audiences. I’m fighting very hard to not let that happen. We’re shopping around the pilot, at the moment. We’re trying to find the right home for it and trying to find someone as excited as we are.

Apparently, Netflix is as excited as they are. The initial six-issue limited series won a 2008 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. Since then, a few notable writers have worked on the project, including Mark Bomback (War for the Planet of the Apes) and Dodgeball director Rawn Thurber. Universal developed the movie after signing a three-year production deal with Dark Horse, which led to R.I.P.D. Way is involved in the Netflix series, which will use Slater’s script.

"How CNN found the Reddit user behind the Trump wrestling GIF"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
Corey

Han AssholeSolo is fantastic.

CNN:
Now the user is apologizing, writing in a lengthy post on Reddit that he does not advocate violence against the press and expressing remorse there and in an interview with CNN for other posts he made that were racist and anti-Semitic.

The apology came after CNN's KFile identified the man behind "HanA**holeSolo." Using identifying information that "HanA**holeSolo" posted on Reddit, KFile was able to determine key biographical details, to find the man's name using a Facebook search and ultimately corroborate details he had made available on Reddit.

On Monday, KFile attempted to contact the man by email and phone but he did not respond. On Tuesday, "HanA**holeSolo" posted his apology on the subreddit /The_Donald and deleted all of his other posts.

...

CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.
