Animaniacs' 'Yakko's World' Sounds Even Zanier When Sung by 168 Movies

by Kelly Kanayama
Corey

Fantastic.

For those who were kids in the 90s, and just about everybody else, The Animaniacs was more than just a cartoon show. It was an education in adult jokes (the “fingerprints” gag in particular is a modern classic), what it meant to be zany to the max, and, of course, world geography. The “Yakko’s World” song taught us…

Bonilla Day Is An MLB Wide Holiday

by Rob Piersall

July 1 again? That must mean it’s Bobby Bonilla Day for the New York Mets organization once more.

As most, if not all, Mets fans have come to know, Bonilla will receive a check for $1.19 million on the first of July until 2035.

The Mets got themselves into this situation after they deferred $5.9 million they owed Bobby Bo for the 2000 season.

Bonilla didn’t even play a game for the Mets that year, but his agent worked out a deal that deferred the payment with an 8 percent increase.

A hefty payday for a guy that hasn’t played in the majors since October 7, 2001 as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

When Bonilla receives that final paycheck on July 1, 2035, he will have accrued $29.8 million from the Mets.

While July 1 has come to be notorious for this reason as a Mets fan, New York isn’t the only team that is on the hook for a load of cash they are doling out to players who aren’t on the team anymore.

In fact, the Baltimore Orioles are also paying Bonilla just over $200,000 until 2028. What a lucky duck that guy is.

If you’re feeling down about the July 1 day of infamy, MMO’s own Michael Mayer compiled a comprehensive list that may ease your spirits.

Apart from Bonilla, here are some bad deals other teams across the majors are facing yearly:

-The Boston Red Sox will pay outfielder Manny Ramirez for nearly $2 million every July 1 which will continue through the 2026 with interest.

-The Cincinnati Reds will pay Hall-of-Famer Ken Griffey Jr. almost $3.6 million until 2024.

-The Reds will also pay pitcher Bronson Arroyo $1.3 million until 2021. Arroyo was paid over $10 million in 2015 from four different teams (Reds, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Braves) without throwing a single pitch.

-The Colorado Rockies will pay first baseman Todd Helton an undisclosed amount every July 1 through 2023. Helton will get $13 million over 10 years with interest.

-The Seattle Mariners still owe future Hall-of-Famer Ichiro Suzuki a portion of his final contract. He will receive payments from the Mariners until at least 2032 once he retires.

-The Atlanta Braves owe pitcher Bruce Sutter $1.3 million through 2020. The payments began in 1990, talk about a nice 30 years!

-Max Scherzer’s contract with the Washington Nationals ends after the 2021 season, but the pitcher will receive $15 million each year in deferred payments from 2022-28.

Now don’t you feel a bit better? We aren’t alone out there, Mets fans!

We can celebrate Bonilla day among the other fans who are also suffering from the long-term issues their teams got themselves into.

Amazon’s Fake ’80s Cop Show ‘Comrade Detective’ Will Be Dubbed By Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and More

by Ben Pearson
Corey

Love this.

Comrade Detective cast

Amazon and A24 may have just genetically engineered a television show that perfectly aligns with my sensibilities. Comrade Detective, which debuts later this summer, is being made to look like a Romanian cop show from the 1980s, with Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici playing the lead roles. But here’s the part that will make people raise their eyebrows: Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are providing dubbed voiceovers for those characters, and they’ll be joined by a crazy-talented group of actors that will be doing some dubbing of their own. Read the full list of names in the Comrade Detective cast below.

Before we get to the cast, here’s the show’s official synopsis so you know what we’re dealing with:

In the thick of 1980’s Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country’s most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by — what else — the greatest enemy: capitalism. Though the beloved show was sadly forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has been rediscovered and digitally remastered now with its main heroes voiced by Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective is a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be—and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before.

That sounds totally ridiculous – I’m imagining it sort of like a full-length version of Key & Peele’s Strike Force Eagle 3: The Reckoning. Now, get a load of this cast: Jenny Slate, Chloe Sevigny, Jake Johnson, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Kim Basinger, Mahershala Ali, Tracy Letts, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton Duplass, Jerrod Carmichael, Bo Burnham, and John Early. That rivals HBO’s Animals and Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer shows when it comes to gathering some of the best comedic voices working in the industry today.

This series was created by Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka (The Sitter), and has Rhys Thomas (Documentary Now!) lined up to direct, while Tatum will serve as an executive producer as well as voiceover actor. I feel like this has huge potential to be a hilarious and maybe even politically relevant piece of comedy, and it might be the last push I needed to convince me to finally pay for an Amazon Prime account.

Comrade Detective premieres on Amazon Prime Video in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on August 4, 2017.

Clique-Bait: Comic Folk Describe Their Creative Process With A GIF

by Jude Terror
Corey

Some really great stuff in here.

When Marvel Comics executive and guy who never misbehaves on Twitter Tom Brevoort said, in his statement announcing that he will probably quit the social media service, “I think my time on Twitter is coming to an end. There’s simply no conversation to be had here anymore, just anger & fodder for clickbait.”

The anger, we’ll give him. Twitter can be pretty rough, with all the big name Marvel comic book creators and editor vanity searching and then arguing with anyone who doesn’t like their work. It’s a downright hostile environment, and we agree with Tom 100% on that.

But “fodder for clickbait?” Sir, we don’t appreciate these accusations. The comic book media is an important institution whose integrity is essential to the health of the comics industry, and must never be maligned. The day that we become so lazy that simply copying tweets into an article passes for journalism will be the day that Marvel lies about why they canceled the Fantastic Four.

In unrelated news, comic book creators took to Twitter today to participate in the hashtag #DescribeYourCreativeProcessWithAGif. Here’s some of your favorite comic book creators and what their creative process might look like if it were a gif:

So as we were saying, Tom, your claim is totally baseless.

Here’s ours, by the way:

And also:

Though we need to update that one — it’s been a while.

‘R’ Is For Renewed: Netflix Sets ‘F Is for Family’ Season 3

by Ray Flook

'R' Is For Renewed: Netflix Sets ‘F Is for Family’ Season 3

Looks like we’ll be spending a little more time getting to know The Murphys as Netflix has renewed their animated comedy series F Is For Family for a third season. The series was created by Michael Price (The Simpsons) and Bill Burr (Breaking Bad), who tweeted the news of the renewal on Wednesday saying, “Really happy to announce there will be a season 3 of FIFF. Thanks to everyone for watching! @netflix #FIsForFamily #gaumontTV”

'R' Is For Renewed: Netflix Sets ‘F Is for Family’ Season 3

F Is For Family follows the day-to-day adventures of The Murphys, an Irish-American family living in the 1970’s during a time when “political incorrectness” ruled the day. Burr voices family patriarch Frank, a disillusioned, short-tempered, Korean War veteran and father of three. The remaining cast includes: Laura Dern (Wild at Heart) as Sue, housewife and Plast-a-Ware saleswoman; Justin Long (Pineapple Express) as Kevin, older son and juvenile delinquent with potential; Debi Derryberry (voice, Sailor Moon Crystal) as Maureen, youngest daughter and “princess” who’s smart enough to hide her dark side; Haley Reinhart (American Idol) as Bill, youngest son who is skinny, shy and often bullied; and Sam Rockwell (Moon) as Vic, Frank’s wealthy, womanizing neighbor.

'R' Is For Renewed: Netflix Sets ‘F Is for Family’ Season 3

Burr also executive produces the series with Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley and Price, who also serves as showrunner. Wild West Television’s Michael Lagnese and Victoria Vaughn are co-executive producers on the series. F Is For Family marks the latest collaboration between Netflix and Burr, with the streaming service running four of Burr’s most recent stand-up specials including I’m Sorry You Feel That Way (which was released in January).

Guillermo del Toro Makes the Case for Why You Must See ‘Baby Driver’

by Ben Pearson

Guillermo del Toro Baby Driver

If you ever hear Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy) speak, you instantly know that the guy knows a lot about movies. He’s one of the most outspoken cinephile filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and his Twitter feed is a mixture of articles about film, behind-the-scenes photos, and stories from his own sets. Yesterday afternoon, the director took to Twitter to share his thoughts about Edgar Wright’s new car chase film Baby Driver, and if you somehow still needed to be convinced to see the new movie, this should do the trick. Read the 13-part Guillermo del Toro Baby Driver comments below.

Here is the original tweet…

And in the interest of easy reading, here are the rest of the tweets written out in a larger paragraph:

13 Tweets on BABY DRIVER. 1: A long, long time ago (my generation’s youth) a maverick filmmaker named Walter Hill made two promises. One: he made a great action flick called THE DRIVER. Two: he promised us, in [Streets of Fire] “A Rock N’Roll Fable”. Both movies gave our generation a shot of adrenaline. Now, decades later, Edgar Wright fulfills both promises with the breathtaking BABY DRIVER. The key to understanding it fully- at least for me- is in the fact that it is a fable, complete with its very own Disney prince and princess, but it is also rock n’ roll. Meaning- the magic exists in a dirty, genre-tainted world. The film is incredibly precise. Flawlessly executed to its smallest detail: breathtaking Russian arm shots, real-world car mount and foot chases executed with the vigour and bravado of a Gene Kelly musical. This is An American In Paris on wheels and crack smoke. Its a movie in love with cinema – the high of cinema and motion. In love with color and light and lenses and film. But, unlike Edgar’s previous films (all of which I love) this stakes new, unironic territory. This is earnest and unprotected . It wears Edgar’s heart on its sleeve. It’s a riff- a beautiful riff and in many ways send his career in a new direction. It shows us tricks and tunes he hadn’t played before. The cast is in a state of grace and so is the entire crew. Imagine that as a carpenter you encounter a precious, precise, exquisite piece of cabinetry. This is how I feel. I’ve always liked Edgar. But this moved me. It moved me to see a fellow filmmaker come out of a debacle with a movie that declares his credo again. I hope & pray you go and see it on a big screen. I wish you all the joy I felt: I just saw a good pal get the gold. By God – go check it out.

(Note: He’s since clarified that he was “too jazzed” and “too high on film” when typing the second tweet, and he initially mentioned Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets instead of Streets of Fire.) That’s some high praise, and it’s especially poignant considering the “debacle” Wright went through with Marvel Studios and Ant-Man a few years ago. And look, all of this praise isn’t to say that the film is up on a pedestal and has completely avoided criticism. Writer/performer/activist Gaby Dunn raised some valid points on Twitter about the film’s female characters: https://twitter.com/gabydunn/status/879917803326722048 https://twitter.com/gabydunn/status/879919466737356800

Del Toro tweeted something else early this morning that I think is just as valid and works well as a response to those criticisms. (To be clear, I’m using his comment as a response to Dunn’s comments – this was not something del Toro tweeted at her):

Two things can be true at the same time: some of Baby Driver’s female characters aren’t as engaging, exciting, or interesting as its male characters; and Baby Driver still kicks ass. While the film isn’t perfect, I found it to be a fun, thrilling look into Wright’s psyche and exactly the type of original film we desperately need more of as we float through a sea of often-underwhelming sequels, remakes, and movies based on stories that have fallen into the public domain.

Baby Driver is in theaters now.

Everything You Need to Know About 'Cleganebowl,' Game of Thrones' Most Hyped Fan Theory

I want to see this more than anything in Game of Thrones. I was so bummed when I thought the Hound died. I even ignored the convenient way they brought him back just to see this.

Fan theories and the vast works of A Song and Ice and Fire go hand in hand, and Game of Thrones has spent the last couple of years bringing a few of the biggest of them to life. But one this upcoming season might finally tackle is the legendary Cleganebowl—a duel fans have been chomping at the bit to see for ages.

CNN’s Jake Tapper Explains How Superman Cuts His Hair

by Jude Terror

CNN news anchor Jake Tapper doesn’t just play a journalist on television. He’s also a cartoonist whose comic strip, Capitol Hell, appeared in the Washington DC newspaper Roll Call from 1994 to 2003. So when Tapper was asked a question whose answer is familiar to many comic book readers but a mystery to the uninitiated, Tapper drew on his love of comics to produce the most worthy piece of journalism to ever come out of anyone associated with CNN:

Tapper’s report earned him some new fans:

And prompted a reminder from Jill Pantozzi that Superman: The Animated Series also tackled this age-old question:

And now let’s go to our panel of ideological archetypes who will shout at each other about this story, I.E., the comment section.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Trailer Looks Like the Biggest Blockbuster of the Year: “Winter Is Here”

by Ben Pearson

Game of Thrones season 7 trailer

HBO has released a brand new trailer for their mega-hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, and the network has officially outdone themselves this time. The show no longer looks like a TV show: it’s clearly moved into the huge budget blockbuster territory. I’ve grown numb to people claiming that things are “epic” over the past few years, but there truly is no other word that does this trailer justice. Winter is definitely here.

Game of Thrones Season 7 Trailer

The sheer scope of this show is almost beyond comprehension at this point, and there are so many jaw-dropping moments that I had to watch the entire trailer with my mouth agape. I’m not normally prone to hyperbole, and I realize I’ve only had about two minutes to sit and think about this statement, but this may honestly be the greatest trailer I’ve ever seen. Ramin Djawadi’s goosebump-inducing score, the incredible voiceovers, and those stunning visuals all come together perfectly.

It takes watching something like this for me to realize that I’ve been taking this show for granted. Visuals like this are not normal for a television show, and even though Game of Thrones has been consistently building over the years, it feels like they’ve hit a new plateau here.

Remember the early seasons of this show, when showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss didn’t have the budget to actually film all of the story’s battle sequences and they had to come up with creative storytelling workarounds to impart that information to the audience? That forced creativity resulted in some terrific character-building moments in multiple two-hander scenes that allowed those early episodes to hit their required run times, and they’ve paid dividends now because seven seasons in, the audience cares about these characters in a deep and enduring way.

Looking back on those early seasons, it almost looks like an entirely different show than the one depicted in this trailer. But thankfully it’s become such a worldwide success that Benioff and Weiss are playing with bigger budgets than anyone in the history of the medium. It’s a different type of show now, all right, and this is becoming a no-holds-barred race to the finish line in which massive battles are going to become so common that the early days of the show will seem like a distant memory with every clang of the sword and breath of fire. I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Game of Thrones season 7 debuts on July 16, 2017.

‘Rick and Morty’ Featurette: Dan Harmon Dives into the Meaning of Life

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love this show and this is actually very introspective.

Rick and Morty Featurette

In the simplest terms, Rick and Morty is an animated comedy series about a drunk, genius scientist grandfather who takes his grandson on insane adventures across the universe and usually creates problem for his family back on Earth. But Rick and Morty is so much more than a series of sci-fi mishaps, vulgarities and drunken burps.

Series co-creator Dan Harmon sat down for a Rick and Morty featurette where he talks briefly about the bleak outlook that Rick Sanchez has by thinking that nothing he does really matters. Is Rick really any happier because he’s smart enough to realize that all of the things that worry the rest of his family are inconsequential? Dan Harmon certainly doesn’t think so, and he explains why in the fairly deep thinking Rick and Morty featurette you can watch after the jump.

For every obscure pop culture reference or joke about sex robots, there are moments when we see how pathetic and sad of an individual Rick truly is. The second season especially really started to dive into Rick’s outlook and life and how his inconsiderate behavior and drunken antics impacts his family’s lives.

As we saw when Adult Swim pulled an epic April Fools’ Day prank that actually didn’t suck, the third season picks up where the second season left off. While it seemed to provide some insight into the origin of Rick’s destructive behavior, the episode took a left turn when Rick’s sad backstory turned out to be a virtual ruse. But was it really a lie? Or is Rick lying about it being a lie? We’ll have to wait until the third season returns sometime this summer to find out.

Neill Blomkamp’s Incredibly Honest Take on the Failure Of ‘Chappie’

by Hoai-Tran Bui
Corey

I liked Chappie.

neill blomkamp talks chappie

Every director has their hits and misses, and Neill Blomkamp is no exception. After exploding on the scene with his revelatory 2009 alien movie District 9, all eyes were on Blomkamp. He followed up with rumors about Halo and Alien movies, and two middling sci-fi films in 2013 and 2015, Elysium and Chappie. Both were blasted by critics and received tepid reactions at the box office, but only the criticism to one still stings Blomkamp to this day: Chappie.

Chappie was an intensely personal film for Blomkamp, and one that he came out of believing that he had nailed the vision he had for this film. So he was shocked by the scathing reviews, and he revealed that they still haunt him two years later.

Blomkamp has rebounded from the failure of Chappie with an experimental short film studio, Oats Studios, that he has been promoting aggressively. Recently, he sat down with Den of Geek for a candid conversation about his past work, and why the failure of Chappie was so affecting. Here’s a choice quote:

Chappie was unbelievably painful for me. That was difficult on several levels. But the thing with Chappie was, it felt like it was extremely close to the film I had in my head. Up until the film came out, I felt like I had given my all, and that I’d tried my hardest to make the film I had in my head, and I felt like I achieved that. […] But I’m still upset the fact that it didn’t work. I wish that it did, but it just didn’t, and I still love it. I don’t know what else to say, but the audience didn’t get what I was going for. It didn’t work.”

Chappie followed a naive, artificially intelligent robot (played by Sharlto Copley) that gets separated from its creator (Dev Patel) and is raised by two gangsters to become a violent outlaw. The film received a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and floundered at the box office with a mere $31.6 million domestic haul.

The interviewer, who was quite obviously one of the few defenders of Chappie, compared Blomkamp’s film’s “failure” to the initial reactions that now-sci-fi classics Starship Troopers and Blade Runner received on release. The audience obviously missed the point about the themes of nature vs. nurture, Den of Geek’s Ryan Lambie said.

“There are millions of things that were missed,” Blomkamp admitted, saying that the film was misread as an artificial intelligence film. “It’s not about AI. Ex Machina’s about AI. Chappie’s not about artificial intelligence — it’s meant to be asking questions about what it means to be sentient.”

In the end, Blomkamp said that while he may have made the film true to his own vision, he may have failed as a director in communicating that vision to his audience. But he still holds Chappie as important to him, unlike Elysium, which he said deserved some of the criticism:

“We could go on for hours about Chappie and where it sits. But it definitely hurt several parts of my career, I think. Those are all secondary to just the repositioning myself as an artist and just thinking about that. I mean, Elysium, I didn’t feel that way. I feel like Elysium wasn’t actually that good. That’s the difference. I feel like I got it right with Chappie, and then when the audience turns on you, that puts you in a different place.”

Blomkamp may still be smarting from the reception to Chappie for a while, but at least he can still make headlines and waves with his buzzy Oats Studios. And his stumble with Chappie hasn’t deterred him from going back to feature films, with reports that he’s bouncing around an idea for a District 9 spin-off. The legacy of Chappie may be tainted, but Blomkamp’s is just getting started.

LOL: ‘Dodgeball’ Stars Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn Reunite for Charity

by Ethan Anderton

Dodgeball Chartiy Campaign

It’s a little hard to believe that it’s been 13 years since Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story hit theaters. The goofy comedy had Vince Vaughn attempting to raise $50,000 to pay the mortgage for his gym, all while a blowhard gym owner played by Ben Stiller is trying to take it over in order to turn it into another link in the corporate Globo-Gym chain.

Now some of the cast, including Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, are reuniting for a charity dodgeball tournament through the popular fundraising platform Omaze. For those who donate, they’ll have a chance at playing in the dodgeball tournament, and they get to choose which team they’ll be playing for, Average Joe’s or Globo-Gym. We’ll let the Dodgeball cast explain the finer details in the amusing Dodgeball charity campaign video after the jump.

The video recycles some of the jokes used in the movie, including White Goodman (Stiller) being so repulsive that Kate (Christine Taylor) throws up in her mouth a bit. Plus, Goodman throws a wrench at Justin Long, just like Patches O’Houlihan did in the movie.

Along with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, if you’re lucky to win the chance to play in this dodgeball tournament, it sounds like you’ll also play the game with Justin Long and Christine Taylor, or maybe you’ll be throwing against them if you choose to play in Globo-Gym’s team instead. It would be a tough choice to make to say the least.

The only thing that would make this better is if Jason Bateman did commentary during the game:

‘Brigsby Bear’ Trailer: Starring Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill and a Bear from Space

by Ethan Anderton

Brigsby Bear Trailer

After debuting at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the first trailer for the quirky indie comedy Brigsby Bear has arrived, and it’s perfectly weird. Just like the movie.

Just in case the marketing campaign somehow manages to keep certain details about the narrative under wraps, we’ll leave certain story points below the trailer, since they don’t reveal any key pieces of information just yet. So if you want to go into this movie completely blind, don’t read anything below the Brigsby Bear trailer embed. You’ve been warned!

Here’s the Brigsby Bear trailer from straight from Sony Pictures Classics:

Below this line will be spoilers for the early film story point, so continue to read at your own risk!

Kyle Mooney stars as a young man who grew up watching an educational children’s television program called Brigsby Bear Adventures. But his life is thrown into upheaval when he learns the parents he’s been growing up with kidnapped him as a baby and raised him in an underground bunker secluded from the rest of the world. The show was nothing more than a creation designed to teach Mooney about the world they wanted him to believe in. When he’s faced with the prospect of entering the real world with his biological parents, Brigsby Bear becomes the only way for him to cope with this his new life.

The movie is decidedly strange, but it’s also hilarious, as we see James (Mooney) as a twentysomething man who is just now learning about the existence of things like movies, modern slang, cell phones and more. It’s a little bit of Blast From the Past mixed with Mooney’s trademark comedy that we’ve seen on Saturday Night Live, combined with a lot of heart and a passion for storytelling and nostalgic children’s programming. As you can see by our own Peter Sciretta’s quote in the trailer, this movie truly is unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Brigsby Bear is directed by Dave McCary, who has helmed a number of Saturday Night Live sketches, including many with Kyle Mooney. The two have actually been friends and partners in comedy since before getting hired by SNL, making people laugh with comedy troupe Good Neighbor, which features the early origins of some of the work they’ve done on the NBC sketch show. In addition to starring, Mooney also wrote the script with Kevin Costello.

The rest of the cast includes Claire Danes, Greg Kinnear, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Kate Lyn Sheil, Ryan Simpkins, Matt Walsh, Michaela Watkins, Beck Bennett and Mark Hamill, who does some great voice work in addition to having a live-action role.

You can read my full take on the movie over here. Not only was it on our list of the best movies from Sundance, but it was in our indie summer movie preview too. Make sure you seek this one out.

‘Daddy’s Home 2’ Trailer: Mel Gibson & John Lithgow Are Home For the Holidays

by Ethan Anderton

Daddy's Home 2 Trailer

When Daddy’s Home hit theaters in 2015, it had Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as a father and step-father competing for the love of their children. The comedy was such a big hit that a sequel was fast-tracked to arrive this holiday season and the first teaser trailer has just arrived, bringing two more fathers into the fray.

Daddy’s Home 2 has Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg living harmoniously as co-dads, raising their kids with a bromance level of cooperation and friendliness. But when Christmas rolls around and their own fathers, played by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow, come to the first joint family holiday celebration, they might not see eye-to-eye again as they each try to impress their dads.

Watch the Daddy’s Home 2 trailer below.

We immediately get to see the contrast between Mel Gibson’s rough around the edges father who tries to tell his grandkids jokes about hookers and John Lithgow’s lighter, loving father who couldn’t be happier to see his son, greeting him at the airport with a huge kiss right on the mouth after being away from him for just two weeks. The change in music is a nice touch to show the clear difference between the two fathers.

This will undoubtedly be another box office hit when it arrives just before Thanksgiving this holiday season. Will it be able to measure up to the first film’s $242 million at the global box office, $150 million of which came from the United States? That depends on whether co-writers Sean Anders and John Morris have written another amusing, family friendly comedy.

The first movie was a little too slapsticky for me to really enjoy, but I found myself liking how the second half of the movie played out as opposed to the more goofy first half. Maybe the comedy can steer away from the more broad humor and lock down something a little more clever this time.

Sean Anders also directs with Linda Cardellini, Alessandra Ambrosio and even John Cena returning to reprise their roles from the first movie.

In Daddy’s Home 2, father and stepfather, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) have joined forces to provide their kids with the perfect Christmas. Their newfound partnership is put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho Dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (John Lithgow) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos.

Daddy’s Home 2 hits theaters on November 10.

‘Luther’ Is Back On The Case With Season 5

Nice!

luther-logo-image-jpg

Looks like the Serious and Serial Crime Unit’s most skilled and obsessed (and some would say possessed) homicide detective, Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba), will be back wading into the horrific mental recesses of the darkest, twisted criminals imaginable…at least for one more season of Luther.

Variety confirmed earlier today that Elba will be returning to his critically-acclaimed, award-winning role for a fifth season.  Luther creator Neil Cross is on-board to oversee production of the four-part installment, which is scheduled to begin production in early 2018 for BBC and BBC America. Though it may still be a bit early for plot details, fans are already speculating on if/when Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson)…Luther’s series-long nemesis/companion…will make her return (which…no spoiler…might be difficult).

Picture shows: DCI John Luther (IDRIS ELBA)

For Cross, it was a matter of he and Elba returning to an “old friend” to see what he’s been up to: “Because we love John and wonder what he’s up to. In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to find out what happens next.” For Elba, it was about getting everyone together to stay true to the character: “I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on.”

Luther premiered in 2010 with a six episode season in May and June; following with a second season of four episodes airing in 2011. A third season of four episodes would air two years later in July 2013, with a two-episode fourth season broadcast in December 2015. BBC Studios and BBC America are co-producing Luther with Elba, Cross, Marcus Wilson, Hilary Salmon, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff serving as  executive producers.

There Is A Bob Ross Funko Pop Coming, And It Rules

by Jeremy Konrad

bob-ross-funko-pop

Funko has made Pop’s of a lot of things. Comic characters, movie heroes, cereal box mascots, cartoon characters. Nothing is too hard to imagine as a Funko Pop, and that is part of their charm. I write about them quite a bit around here, and every once in awhile, like the other day with the Parks and Rec Pops, they announce something so great that it just brings a smile to my face. this would be one of those times. Yes, you are not seeing things: Bob Ross is getting a Funko Pop. The Funko blog had the happy announcement:

Happy little trees.
You heard it, Bob Ross is joining the Funko family!
The soft-spoken creator and host of The Joy of Painting,
is now receiving the Pop! vinyl treatment.

Get to painting and add him to your
collection this Summer!

Now, if you don’t know who this is: I feel sorry for you. But he hosted a art show on syndicated TV for years called The Joy of Painting, and it is a fantastic watch. He really was just the sweetest man in existence, and you can still watch the show on Netflix. Sadly, he passed away back in 1995. He has become an American legend however, a folk hero who believed that anyone could paint. I could prove him wrong in about 5 seconds if I tired, but that was not the point. There are Bob Ross clubs, shirts, cartoons. He is reported to have completed around 30,000 paintings in his lifetime, many of which were donated to fundraisers and PBS. While it doesn’t seem to be the case on this Pop, he was even missing a finger! Basically, I feel this Pop is well-deserved and I hope they sell 1000’s of these. I know that I will be buying one.

Michael Jordan’s 1984 Olympic Sneakers Go For A Record-Breaking $190,000

by Dan Wickline

michael jordan shoes

A pair of game-worn sneakers from NBA legend Michael Jordan went for a record-breaking $190,373 at an auction on Sunday morning. Jordan wore the shoes during his gold-medal game against Spain at the 1984 Olympics. This breaks the record set in 2013 for a pair of sneakers Jordan wore in game five of the 1997 NBA finals, which went for $104,765. That game, played 20 years ago today, was also known as the flu game — Jordan fought off illness to score 38 points in the Chicago Bulls‘ win over the Utah Jazz.

The shoes from the 1984 Olympics comes from a game played at the Forum in Los Angeles that was considered to be the last amateur game of Jordan’s career. It was also the last time he wore Converse in an official game. The shoes are signed and include the orthopedic inserts. They originally came into the possession of Los Angeles Lakers player Gail Goodrich’s 11-year-old grandson.

Jordan went on to wear Nikes through out his pro career after the company offered him a five-year deal at $500,000 a year to wear their brand. Converse had only been willing to pony up $100,000 at the time.
