New sidescrolling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game arriving in October

A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is coming in October, Activision announced via press release. The game is based on the Nickelodeon animated series, and is described as a "side-scrolling action-brawler" with "loads of combat and animated scenes." It is the product of a multi-year, three-game deal between Activision and Nickelodeon, first announced in February.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will launch on October 22 in North America, October 23 in Asia and Australia and October 25 in Europe and Latin America for 3DS, Wii and Xbox 360.

Half-Life co-op mod getting standalone release on Steam

by Griffin McElroy

Holy shit, Dave. Do you remember being excited about this in 1999?

Screen_shot_2013-07-17_at_10

Sven Co-Op, a multiplayer mod for the original Half-Life that has been in development for nearly 15 years, will get a standalone Steam release using a customized version of Valve's engine, the dev team announced today.

Valve granted the Sven Co-Op dev team access to the GoldSrc engine upon which Half-Life and its expansions were built, allowing them to make changes to improve the game's engine and level editor. The new version of Sven will be completely free, and will include a co-op version of the Half-Life campaign, automatic updates via SteamPipe and improved stability and performance for the aging engine.

"We are grateful beyond expression to Valve for their generosity and efforts put forth to make this possible," artist Josh...

Mad Max tears up a debut gameplay trailer

by Sinan Kubba
Joel Koh

Badass soundtrack: Steven Stern - Soul of a Man

"We never got a hero. We got him ... the man they call Max." Besides that dramatic declaration, this Mad Max trailer also includes our first look at the gameplay. There's still a cinematic tang to this debut showing of Avalanche Studios' open-world adventure, but past the 1:10 mark it gets going with a fiery mix of vehicular destruction and old-fashioned fisticuffs.

Some of the in-car combat is taken from the closed-doors demo we saw at E3, which showed just how brutal Max can be behind the wheel. Mad Max is scheduled to rip it up Oz-style on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime next year.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaculus

Owlchemy Labs is releasing Dejobaan's base-jumping game, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!, to the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset as AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaCULUS!!!, the indie Oculus developer announced today.

"We’ve held some internal playtests down in the secret Owlchemy dungeon, and I can say with confidence that this is one of most absurdly awesome gaming experiences to date," said Owlchemy Labs, developers of Snuggle Truck, Jack Lumber . "The feeling of falling is intense -- it's absolutely brilliant to dive off of buildings, feel the wind blur past your face, and graze by buildings for points. Players are ducking their heads when large objects come streaming by their face. It feels so... real."

Steam Summer Sale snapshot: Fez sells 105K units in two days

by Jessica Conditt

YOU GUYS NEED TO PLAY THIS GAME

Steam Summer Sale snapshot Fez sells 105K units in two days
Fez launched on Steam on May 1, following one year as an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive. On July 12, Fez joined the Steam Summer Sale, knocking half off of its price - bringing it to $5 - alongside an avalanche of hotly anticipated discounts. In its two days as part of the Steam Summer Getaway Sale, Fez sold 105,000 units, which is more than it sold in its first month on XBLA. In the first discounted day alone, Fez racked up more sales than it had in its previous three months on Steam.

On Twitter, Fez creator Phil Fish described the numbers as "BANANERS" and "fuckin' NUTSO," which sounds accurate, especially when looking at the sales graph he included. We asked Fish if he's a fan of Steam sales, considering his game was half-off when it got those mad hits.

"Yeah I'm a fan!" he said. "Even I can't find a way to complain about it."

That's the most solid endorsement of the Steam Summer Sale we've ever heard - go check it out.

Mad Max to get an Australian accent after fan outcry

by Tracey Lien

AS IT SHOULD

Mad-max

Max from Avalanche Studios' upcoming Mad Max video game will have an Australian accent afterall, according to a tweet from studio founder and chief creative officer Christofer Sundberg.

In a tweet posted earlier today, Sundberg wrote: "Attn. fans who want Max to have an Aussie accent in #MadMaxGame: It shall be so. We admire your loyalty. You have been heard."

The game was revealed at E3 this year, but some vocal fans of the brand expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that all the characters spoke with American accents. In the 1979 film directed by George Miller, Mad Max was set in a dystopic future Australia and starred actors who spoke with Australian accents.

I would totally watch that movie.

'I'm here to return what Prometheus stole.' would be a good thing to say if you were a fighter pilot in a Michael Bay movie where for some reason the world's militaries had to team up to defeat every god from human mythology, and you'd just broken through the perimeter and gotten a missile lock on Mount Olympus.

Antichamber trips the Oculus Rift

by Alexander Sliwinski
Joel Koh

Antichamber + Oculus Rift = Projectile vomit everywhere

Antichamber chops half off its price, Starseed Pilgrim takes off on Steam

Indie hit Antichamber is already a mind-bending monster, but now add some Oculus Rift and you've got a "trapped on the holodeck" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. That's what computer science student Vaecon has done in this VR conversion of the game.

"It's interesting seeing that someone has gone ahead and done this, and I guess I really need to go and get it up and supported officially," said Antichamber developer Alexander Bruce when we pointed out the video to him.

"I have an Oculus dev kit at home, but haven't yet run the game on it myself. I tried watching that video using the good old cross-eyed method, but it was pretty much the same as seeing the game normally. The lack of textures in the game makes it really difficult to see any real sense of depth."

At least Antichamber looks like a more cerebral and calm Oculus experience than some of the whiplash inducing games we've seen use the tech.

May NPD: 3DS steals top console spot

by Mike Schramm
Joel Koh

For Dave and Lisa

May NPD 3DS steals top console spot in a slow month
The Nintendo 3DS finally edged out the Xbox 360 in May 2013 as the best selling console across hardware and portables, according to the NPD's monthly report on the retail sector.

In what the NPD claims was a slow month overall, the 3DS landed three different games on the top 10 (including Donkey Kong Country Returns at number three, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon at number five, and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes at number 10), and saw a sixty percent growth in software sales overall since last May. 3DS hardware sales were only even year-over-year, but that was enough to finally supplant the Xbox 360 as the top-selling platform.

The other consoles didn't fare quite so well, with Injustice: Gods Among Us keeping the top spot for video game sales. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 jumped back up into the number two spot, and Battlefield 3 reappeared at number nine. Metro: Last Light had a relatively successful showing in the number six spot, while Trion's Defiance MMO fell right off the list, after starting off at number five in April.

Accessories saw a six-percent drop to $115.3 million, according to the NPD, with most of that money coming from Skylanders.

Throw Trucks With Your Mind demonstrates the power of calm and focus

by Megan Farokhmanesh
Joel Koh

This is literally a battle of minds. You can break your opponent's focus with unorthodox trash talk phrases like "you are now wondering if penguins have knees…"

Ttwym-screenshot-04

Throw Trucks With Your Mind is a game that requires you to flex muscles you didn't know you had.

Creator Lat Ware demoed to the game to Polygon at this year's Indie Press Day, which took place in San Francisco. Labeled a "first-person thinker," Throw Trucks With Your Mind works by using an EEG headset that looks for a spike in the brain's beta waves. It hones in on two very specific concepts: focus and calm.

"Focus is fundamentally the act of giving one thing your attention and taking away everything else," Ware explained to us. "People focus in different ways. Some focus visually [and] stare at the dot of the center of the screen, [others] listen to sounds like nearby conversation. I have one friend that is very ADD, and the only way...

Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments' new mechanic inspired by BBC show

by Jessica Conditt
Joel Koh

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments inspired by BBC show
Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments is a departure from Frogwares' previous investigation game, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, in a number of ways. Crimes and Punishments aims to put players inside the mind of the world's greatest detective, to see the world as he sees it and deliberate the moral choices within Holmes' logistics of justice. It's emotional and dark, and in a demo showing off the story as told in Unreal Engine 3, it already appears insanely effective.

One of the most obvious changes is the new "Character Portrait" ability, which allows Holmes to take a moment and examine a suspect or witness with his keen, investigative eye. As he scans the person, words in white appear over certain features, noting how expensive or worn down certain articles of clothing are, noting scrapes or signs of labor on limbs, and deducing relevant, personal information.

This ability in particular is inspired by the BBC show Sherlock, designer Olga Chalovskaya told me. Sherlock is, itself, a dramatic interpretation of Holmesian detective stories, and Crimes and Punishments draws on many of the same, human-driven tones.

Quantum Break brings binge viewing to video games

by Chris Plante
Joel Koh

For Dave.

"The game will alternate between extended sequences of gameplay and roughly half-hour episodes of television. The hope is to get players so invested in the story that after finishing an "episode" they'll want to play, or watch, "just one more"; that they will want to experience Quantum Break they way they do a television series on Netflix."

Quantum_break

Unpacking the Quantum Break elevator pitch is its own meta-game.

Its creators, Remedy Entertainment, describe Quantum Break as (inhale) a transmedia action-shooter video game and television hybrid that mashes together real world actors and traditional filmmaking with computer graphics and virtual settings in the same fictional universe.

In layman's terms, Quantum Break is one of those wildly ambitious projects that would be prohibitively expensive were it not funded by a billion dollar corporation determined to get people excited about its upcoming entertainment hardware, in this case Microsoft's Xbox One.

Set in the fictional Northeastern U.S. Riverport University, the story of Quantum Break follows the people who were in the...

Thievery at E3: Vlambeer developer's backpack full of games stolen

by Jessica Conditt
Joel Koh

Vlambeer just can't catch a break. Seriously. :'(

Thievery at E3 Vlambeer developer's backpack full of games stolen
Wednesday night, a black Samsonite backpack filled with an Asus laptop, two iPads, two Vitas, a Kindle, a bunch of European-US outlet converters, and "enough power cables to power E3," disappeared from an E3 party. The bag and everything inside of it belong to Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismail.

Ismail was at the Sony mixer at the Figueroa hotel last night, and he left his bag near a table for a few minutes. When he turned to reclaim it, it was gone. Today, Ismail filed a police report, but so far no one has produced any information about the thief.

"It's pretty much my entire company in that backpack," Ismail said. Vlambeer is responsible for Ridiculous Fishing, Super Crate Box and the coming multiplatform game, Luftrausers.

Authorities said E3 and its surrounding events provide a hotbed for burglaries, so keep a close eye on your bags. And if you spy anyone playing Luftrausers on a Vita that isn't attached to a Sony booth, hit up Ismail's Twitter.

Saints Row 4 elects for even more chaos

by Mike Schramm
Joel Koh

Vick, put on a bib before reading this.

Saints Row 4 elects for more chaos
When Saints Row: The Third was still in development, we talked about it as "a dinner of doughnuts." The first mission in the game was just as stimulating and over-the-top as the last mission of your average Grand Theft Auto game. But if Saints Row 3 starts on the last mission of other sandbox games, then Saints Row 4 picks up even later than that: in the end credits.

When Saints Row 4 begins, you are no less than the leader of the free world, and your first walk through the White House (complete with scantily dressed staffers and chained-up pet tigers) is like a congratulations for a job well done. You get to choose between making healthcare free or ending the deficit, you get re-introduced to a bunch of familiar faces from the series (who now all have cabinet-level positions in your administration), and the biggest prize of all is that you're on a first-name basis with your Vice President, Keith David (yes, the Keith David, brilliantly playing himself). Starting Saints Row 4 feels like you've just finished a long journey, and you've won the day once and for all.

And that's when the aliens show up to kidnap your friends. You order the turrets raised from underneath the South Lawn, you get in a fistfight with the alien overlord, and - oh - you get superpowers.

Nintendo thinking on a different frequency with playable Princess Peach

by Danielle Riendeau
Joel Koh

Cool!

Wiiu_supermario_scrn10_e3

Super Mario 3D World producer Yoshiaki Koizumi says that the decision to bring Princess Peach back as a playable character — after a very long hiatus — was a deliberate one.

"I feel like Mario games, as you know, have done lots of representation of male characters over the years." He told Polygon. "Perhaps much more so than female — so it's actually really nice to be able to have a female playable character in the game."

Princess Peach hasn't been a playable character in main series Super Mario title since her 1988 debut in Super Mario Bros. 2. While she has appeared as a playable character in most of the series' spin-off franchises, such as Super Smash Bros, she's been on the sidelines — and often kidnapped — in Mario's...
