Farm-to-Table Dinners with Outstanding in the Field
Jim Denevan founded Outstanding in the Field (@out_inthefield) in the late 1990s following a series of "farmer dinners" he hosted in Santa Cruz, California. From these dinners, Jim realized that people wanted to learn more about where their food was coming from. Now, over a decade later, Outstanding in the Field hosts farm-to-table dinners all across the United States, and they’re inviting you to join in by following along on Instagram.
Jim and his crew travel the United States in a vintage red and white bus, hosting dinners at local ranches, vineyards and orchards along the way. The crew teams up with farmers and chefs at each location to prepare dinners using local, seasonal ingredients for over 100 people per sitting. Guests tour the site and meet the farmers before gathering at a long table — often in a scenic area such as a mountaintop or sea cave — to enjoy their meal together.
Follow @out_inthefield to see more photos and videos from the team as they cook up delicious farm dinners around the United States.

Would This New Urinal Design Make Men Wash Their Hands?

Here's a problem about guys: many of us don't wash our hands after using the restroom. It might be general grossness or everyman laziness or being too trusting your own hygiene or being too drunk or taking on a drive through mentality with a urinal but if you monitor a men's restroom, you'll see many folks skip the sink.
But this new urinal design by Kaspars Jursons tries to solve the hand washing problem by combining the sink with the urinal, two birds with one stone kind of thing. The thinking is that putting the sink on top of the urinal and making it sensor-activated, men will wash their hands because it is right in front of their face.
The thinking is wrong. And the thinking is unbelievably gross.
Here's what will likely happen with these Frankenurinals: men, with their terrible aim and never ending urine, will manage to piss inside the sink and stain the tap a disgusting shine of morning yellow. It's going to be foul. In fact, with this new urinal + sink design, I'd bet there would be more piss in the sink, on the handle, around the receptacle and all over the place than there would be inside the urinal. I'd rather deal with non-washed hands than this.
Men are disgusting. Don't encourage us to be more disgusting. [Jursons via DesignTAXI]

Putin Gay Adoption Ban Signed Into Law
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed an overseas gay adoption ban into law.
Putin made it clear last March that he would approve the legislation after as soon as it was voted on by the country’s parliament. Now signed, the new law prohibits gay couples in foreign countries where gay marriage is legal from adopting Russian children (presumably orphans in many instances). It also similarly rules out any such adoptions by single persons or unmarried couples irrespective of sexual orientation in countries where same-sex marriage has been legalized. The new law is said to be a direct response to the legalization of gay marriage in several European nations.
According to government officials in Russia, “the measure is aimed at guaranteeing a harmonious and full upbringing for children in adoptive families,” AFP reports.
Putin made headlines late last year by imposing a ban on Americans adopting Russian children. Apparently this was in retaliation for the US Congress passing the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012, which implements visa and banking restrictions on Russian officials in connection with human rights abuses, particularly those implicated in the prison death of Russian lawyer and accountant Magnitsky.
Responding to the enactment of the adoption ban, gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev said that “I think it will lead to an increase in corruption in the (adoption) process, but many foreigners, including homosexuals, will still be able to adopt Russian children in the future,” according to Reuters.
Inside Russia where same-sex marriage is not allowed, gay couples can’t officially adopt children either.
A former KGB officer, Vladimir Putin has been the most powerful politician in Russia for over a decade. He was president of Russia from 2000 to 2008 and prime minister from 2009 to 20012. Although the results were disputed by opposition candidates, he was elected to a third presidential term in March 2012 and will serve for six years under changes made to Russian law.
What do you think of Putin’s new law that bans overseas adoptions of Russian children in any country where same-sex marriage has been recognized?

The Most Influential Movies of the Last Century According to Wikipedia

When it comes down to it, what makes a movie "good" is a matter of taste. Even bad movies have their fans. What makes a movie "influential" is a little easier to try and brute force. Especially when you have Wikipedia on your side.
Massaged into being by the Arg! Team, this massive list ranks the most influential movies of the past 100 years by modeling a theoretical Wikipedia surfer, who meanders through the site, randomly clicking on links. According to the algorithm, the bored little guy clicks a link every second, 85 percent of the time it's a random internal link, the other 15 percent it's the "Random Article" button. The result is a sort of Wikipedia PageRank, and the movies that pop up the most frequently and get the most screentime are the most influential.
Here's the breakdown by year, with the length of the blue bar representing relative influence power:

It looks like Titanic was by far the most influential movie to be released recently, with the original Star Wars film the most noteworthy before that. And, of course, Citizen Kane tops the charts when it comes to weight.
Granted, this is only one way to go about indexing movies, but considering the insane mass of interconnected information that is Wikipedia, it's definitely a valid one. Then again, it's going to have its biases; Wikipedia editors are overwhelmingly male.
Be sure to hop over to the Arg! Team's blog to see the list in it's gloriously convenient hyperlinked form. Any guesses as to what'll top the Wiki charts this year? It's got to be The Internship, right? [The Arg! Team via Hacker News]

Miyamoto on why Nintendo is slow to create new characters
In an interview with Game Informer, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about where the company's priorities lie in terms of creating new intellectual properties. There are a lot of familiar franchises coming up for Wii U and 3DS and although many of them look great -- terrific, in some cases -- is this overwhelming reliance on familiar characters a problem?
"Certainly within Nintendo," begins Miyamoto, "we have people internally who are saying, 'Well, we have our old characters from our old games, and that's old IP, and we should think about creating new IP.' But the question that we always ask is: 'Does a new character really make it a new game?' And to me, the answer to that is, 'No.'
"What makes it a new game is new gameplay and new interactions. So when we're creating a game, we're always looking at it from, 'What is the gameplay, and how are making that gameplay new?' And then, 'Who is the character that is best suited to that gameplay?'"
Miyamoto feels this approach allows Nintendo to create new experiences even if they are associated with fan-favorite characters. Citing Pikmin as an example of Nintendo's philosophy, he explains that "we created this new style of gameplay, and it really needed a new character in order to have that gameplay work, and that was the approach we took. We created the gameplay mechanic first, and then created the characters afterwards."
He continued: "What we always stress, when we're working with our development teams is, 'Focus first on creating fun and new gameplay, and then we'll figure out what the character is or what the IP is that's going to go with it.'" While it's an admirable approach and one that has largely served Nintendo well, I can't help but wonder if we couldn't get just a little bit more on the new-IP front.

BMW i3 unofficially priced up for US and Europe ahead of November debut
BMW’s i3 electric car will be priced from $34,500 in the US, the German company has hinted, with the range-extending gas engine to be a roughly $2k option when the car hits forecourts in January 2014. Europe will get the i3 first, Autoblog reports, with sales and leasing beginning in November from around €35,000 for the 168 HP electric-only version of the angular eco-friendly car.

Your money – with those figures not yet officially confirmed, but apparently based on “ballpark” figures from BMW execs – gets you a 22 kWh li-ion battery powering an electric motor mounted over, and driving, the rear-axle. It’s good for 184 lb-ft of torque, with a range of up to 100 miles depending on driving style and which regenerative-braking mode you’re in.
BMW i3 eyes-on:
However, BMW will also offer a second version of the i3, pairing the electric motor with a small gas engine – a two-cylinder, 600cc one, to be exact – that can recharge the battery when it’s running low. Similar to the Cadillac ELR, the traditional engine never actually drives the wheels, only works as a generator to roughly double the range you’ll get from the i3.
That option will come in at around $2,000 in the US and €2,000 in Europe, it’s said.

Altogether, the pricing is ambitious. Cadillac is yet to confirm a sticker price for the ELR, but there are already estimates that the luxury EV will come in at around $60k-$70k. Even after raiding BMW’s (likely well-stocked) options list, the i3 should be relatively affordable in comparison.
What toys will be standard remains to be seen. The concept i3 we saw back at the LA Auto Show in November last year had twin displays, i-Drive, various infotainment and navigation features baked-in, and smartphone integration; some of those are likely to be carried over to the production model, but BMW is yet to confirm which. However, the garage charging station for fast-refuels at home will be a cost extra, it’s suggested.

A man died and was taken to his place of eternal torment by the devil. ...
As he passed sulphurous pits and shrieking sinners, he saw a man he recognized as a lawyer snuggling up to a beautiful woman.
"That's unfair!" he cried. "I have to roast for all eternity, and that lawyer gets to spend it with a beautiful woman."
"Shut up", barked the devil, jabbing the man with his pitchfork.
"Who are you to question that woman's punishment?"
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD becomes PlayStation Plus freebie
Munch's Oddysee, which also features gangly escapee Abe as a playable protagonist, is considered the second chapter in the ever-lingering "Oddworld Quintology." The 3D action/puzzle game nearly started on the PlayStation 2, but it debuted as an exclusive Xbox 1 (not "One") launch game in 2001 and later made its way to PC.
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD should be available for free after Tuesday's PlayStation Store update. The recent Star Trek game will be on sale right alongside it, which makes sense because ...
A) it also endorses cooperation between species
B) it also has two handsome protagonists
C) it's also about an odyssey, but spelled correctly

The Forbidden Island
Late on the night of August 2, 1981, a Hong Kong freighter navigating the choppy waters of the Bay of Bengal ran aground on a submerged coral reef. The ship, called the Primrose, was hopelessly stuck. But there was no danger of it sinking so the captain and crew settled in for a few days' wait until help arrived.
The following morning, as it became light, the sailors saw an island a few hundred yards beyond the reef. It was uninhabited, as far as anyone could tell: There were no buildings, roads, or other signs of civilization there - just a pristine, sandy beach and behind it, dense jungle.
Rockstar job listing hints at possible GTA 5 PC release
Every main GTA game has, after some form of delay, made its way to PC. There’s every reason to expect Grand Theft Auto V will do the same. But while you won’t ever hear Rockstar say that, you will be able to glean tantalising hints from their job openings. Rockstar Leeds recently posted a listing for a Graphic Programmer, whose responsibilities would include bringing the studio’s “latest titles” to PC.
“Rockstar Leeds are currently looking for a talented graphics programmer to help bring our latest titles to the PC platform. Working together with the other Rockstar studios, you will be responsible for maintaining the studio’s uncompromising quality bar, delivering the highest quality PC experience possible.”
The posting also makes mention of “working with skilled developers on Next Generation games”, which suggests that Rockstar are planning to support the PC well into the life-cycle of the upcoming console boxes. Of course, they could win themselves a whole bunch of good will if they just said that directly to PC fans, maybe using words instead of dispassionate silence.
Let’s take a look at which of Rockstar’s “latest” released and announced titles have yet to make their way to PC:
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Red Dead Redemption
Personally, given the choice, I’d probably prefer for an RDR release to finally make its way to us. But then, I do have an unreasonable amount of love for Westerns. As always, the safe bet is on Grand Theft Auto V joining its PC brethren the standard six or so months after its console release.
Thanks, Rockstar Watch.

Snowden: Your Emails or Facebook Profile Can Make You an NSA Target

How does the National Security Agency choose who to target for surveillance?
"Normally you'd be specifically selected for targeting based on, for example, your Facebook or webmail content," Edward Snowden told the German magazine Der Spiegel in an email interview. The discussion was held weeks before Snowden decided to step forward as the source of top secret documents that revealed wide-ranging surveillance programs
Snowden's interview was conducted by Laura Poitras, the filmmaker who has worked with The Guardian and The Washington Post in their coverage of the leaked documents, and Jacob Appelbaum, a computer security researcher and a WikiLeaks associate. Poitras approached Appelbaum in mid-May; she wanted to send a series of questions to Snowden to see if he was a legit source. Read more...

Reconfigured 1950′s House in Beverly Hills
Argentine architect Pablo Jendretzki was hired to reconfigure a 1950′s Hal Levitt house located in Beverly Hills. The main goals: to open up the cramped mid-century interior and create a connection between the interior and exterior of the house. With both goals accomplished, it has become a stunning 5,000-square-foot home in California’s most famous locale.
The wide wood planks of the deck contrast with the bright blue color that the pool gives off, while also providing ample space for laying out and enjoying the sun.
The first step with making the indoor/outdoor connection was installing the same wood that’s on the floors inside, outside on the deck. That way, when the large sliding glass doors are open, the space really expands.
Floor to ceiling sliding glass doors dissolve the separation of spaces, while at the same time filling the home with light and fresh air.
Room partitions were removed to make way for shelving units that provide storage while allowing light to pass through.
The pool is lit with fiber optic stars that mimic the stars in the sky.
