Ivanpah Solar Plant Accidentally Creates Death Ray that Kills Birds in Flight

by Shane McGlaun

Last week in the California desert, a $2.2 billion solar plant opened that creates electricity by harnessing solar energy. Rather than using traditional solar panels, this facility has hundreds of mirror-like reflectors that shoot the sunlight at a tower filled with water in the center of the mirror arrays.

ivanpah tbmagnify

That water inside the tower is turned into superheated steam by the 1000°F temperatures to turn a steam generator, making electricity. Researchers working on the project said that they expected the heat could result in some dead birds. What they didn’t expect was how many birds would be killed by the massive solar death ray. Unfortunately, dozens of birds with singed and charred feathers have already been recovered at the site.

The birds don’t even have to land on the tower; simply flying through the solar beam will kill them. Researchers are currently conducting a study to determine how to reduce the threat to local avian populations. Until the research is complete, Big Bird should maintain his distance.

Cake with Whole Pears Baked Inside

by John Farrier

I love this baking idea! I've seen berries and fruit slices baked inside cakes, but never entire pears. Deanna Segrave-Daly made this cake with Meyer lemons, a variety of that plant that is increasingly popular with chefs in America. She made her batter with Greek yogurt, a whole vanilla bean and whole wheat pastry flour.

She poached 3 Bosc pears in sugar water. Maybe she did this to keep the pears moist, which I expect would be a problem when baking pears inside a cake. Segrave-Daly sliced the bottoms off the pears so that they could stand upright in the baking pan, then poured the batter in.

The 1,000-Year-Old Black Hole --Youngest in the Milky Way

by dailygalaxy.com

W49b_w11

The highly distorted supernova remnant, called W49B, is about a thousand years old, as seen from Earth, and is at a distance of about 26,000 light years away shown in the image above may contain the most recent black hole formed in the Milky Way galaxy. The image combines X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in blue and green, radio data from the NSF's Very Large Array in pink, and infrared data from Caltech's Palomar Observatory in yellow.

The supernova explosions that destroy massive stars are generally symmetrical, with the stellar material blasting away more or less evenly in all directions. However, in the W49B supernova, material near the poles of the doomed rotating star was ejected at a much higher speed than material emanating from its equator. Jets shooting away from the star's poles mainly shaped the supernova explosion and its aftermath.

W49b_elements_embed

By tracing the distribution and amounts of different elements in the stellar debris field, researchers were able to compare the Chandra data to theoretical models of how a star explodes. For example, they found iron in only half of the remnant while other elements such as sulfur and silicon were spread throughout. This matches predictions for an asymmetric explosion.  The Chandra X-ray Image of W49B above shows just the iron (purple) and silicon (blue). Also, W49B is much more barrel-shaped than most other remnants in X-rays and several other wavelengths, pointing to an unusual demise for this star.

The authors also examined what sort of compact object the supernova explosion left behind. Most of the time, massive stars that collapse into supernovas leave a dense spinning core called a neutron star. Astronomers can often detect these neutron stars through their X-ray or radio pulses, although sometimes an X-ray source is seen without pulsations. A careful search of the Chandra data revealed no evidence for a neutron star, implying an even more exotic object might have formed in the explosion, that is, a black hole.

A well-known example of a supernova remnant in our Galaxy that likely contains a black hole is SS433. This remnant is thought to have an age between 17,000 and 21,000 years, as seen from Earth, making it much older than W49B.

Galactic Princess: Star Wars with more smuggling & llamas

by Steven Hansen

I'm not saying I would make a ship shape liked a penis, but when you have such modular ship design I'm sure the community will come up with all sorts of creative things. Though it's going to be hard to top the ship below. Add enough alternating thrusters and you could maybe build a ship that hurtles through space like a deadly Ferris wheel. I want to try, anyway.

Make sure to keep watching the trailer past the ship design. The coolest part is how detailed all of those modules are once you zoom in, from engine rooms to prisons. The gifs on the Kickstarter page sold me. And apparently in your space smuggling you can get pet cats and llamas. And all this set to chill 80's music. Yeah, Galactic Princess seems pretty cool.

This "Spaceship Survival Sandbox" has finally put up its hinted at Kickstarter and is on Steam Greenlight.
