The Perfect Microwave Listens to Popcorn Popping So It Never Burns

Tossing a bag of popcorn in the microwave is much easier than dragging out the hot air popper, except that you have to watch it like a hawk to make sure it doesn't burn. Alternatively, you can swap out your dated microwave for this new model from Whirlpool that actually listens to the popcorn as it pops to make sure your snack never gets scorched.

Weight Loss Tip: Quinoa Is Your New Best Friend

by William Brisby

Quinoa, pronunced Keen-Wah, is from South America.

Weight loss is achieved by doing a lot of little things consistently each day. This also applies to weight management. Anytime you can work a healthy habit into your daily routine you have a chance to turn a small change into big success. An example of an easy diet change to make is the inclusion of quinoa as a substitute for rice or grains.

Quinoa is a nutrient-dense seed from South America that aids in weight loss if added to your daily diet. Marie Claire reported on expert nutritionist Fiona Hunter’s comments: “Quinoa has a low Glycemic Index and contains around almost twice as much protein as rice and almost three times more protein than couscous, which makes it good choice for anyone watching their weight because protein rich foods help you feel full quicker and stay feeling full for longer.”

Quinoa is also loaded with important protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that help you fell full longer. This is especially due to the dense fiber content of the super food. Livestrong.com reports, “Quinoa boosts satiety because of its high protein and fiber content. Fiber and protein both help you feel full from fewer calories, which is beneficial when you’re trying to shed pounds. A 1/2-cup portion of cooked quinoa provides 2.6 grams of fiber and 4.1 grams of protein. In comparison, 1/2 cup of cooked white rice provides only 0.3 gram of dietary fiber and 2.2 grams of protein.”

Vitamins and minerals are another benefit to eating quinoa. Weight loss is easier to achieve when you get your vitamins from raw food sources rather than relying on multivitamins. Quinoa has us covered on many vitamins essential to weight loss according to Livestrong.com, “Quinoa seeds are rich in eight essential amino acids and vitamins such as magnesium and calcium. Quinoa is also high in iron and vitamin B 12. Both iron and vitamin B 12 are essential for energy production and weight loss. If you are deficient in B vitamins, it can slow down your weight loss because your body won’t be able to synthesize nutrients as efficiently.”

Quinoa can help with weight loss but it is not low in calories. If you eat too much of anything you can still gain weight. When Quinoa is eaten within the recommended portion size it makes you feel full longer after you eat, which in turn helps to decrease you total calorie intake. The key to weight loss success is burning off more calories than you eat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests eating 500 to 1,000 less calories per day than normal to achieve weight loss. Even though quinoa is technically a seed it is classified as a grain when planning dietary nutrition. For a 2,000-calorie diet, the USDA recommends a total of 6 ounces of grains each day. For reference, one slice of bread is about one ounce of grain.

Here is a recipe using quinoa that looks easy to make, delicious, and should help you reach your weight loss goals. Enjoy!

In an unprecedented act, a protester appears to have smuggled a video camera into the U.S. Supreme Court, captured footage of proceedings and posted it to YouTube.

The two-minute video ends with a plug for the website of a campaign finance reform activist group called 99Rise. The video's climactic moment shows a man rising and shouting at the court before being grabbed by guards

"I rise on behalf of the vast majority of the American people who believe that money is not speech and corporations are not people and our democracy should not be for sale to the highest bidder," the protester says. "Overturn Citizens United. Keep the cap in McCutcheon. The people demand democracy." Read more...

‘Minecraft’ Movie Rights Land at Warner Bros.

by Russ Fischer

Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros. loves that The Lego Movie performed like a real blockbuster. (Pun intended.) The studio will now follow the development of Lego with a new film based on crafting. The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee is set to oversee a Minecraft movie for the studio.

Minecraft publisher Mojang AB made a deal this week with the studio. Company head Marcus Persson spoke out on Twitter about the news just before Deadline posted details of the deal.

Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie. I wanted to be the leak!

— Markus Persson (@notch) February 27, 2014

Warner Bros. is putting together a live-action film based on the game, which allows players to craft their own portions of a huge open-world setup. The parallels to The Lego Movie seem pretty obvious on the surface. To outside observers both involve building things out of blocks. In reality, however, the Minecraft movie will probably end up being something very different from Lego.

Precisely what Minecraft will be is something we don’t know, and the film itself could take quite a while to develop. While the game has many millions of players, across many age ranges, it is a bit different from the family-friendly and license-heavy personality of Lego. (That said, one of the more well-known uses for Minecraft outside the core gaming community is replicating other properties within the game, and that could end up playing into the script as it develops.) Still, ask any parent what their kids are obsessed with right now, and there’s a good chance that Minecraft will be the answer.

The fact that the Minecraft movie is currently planned as a live-action film rather than a CG animated movie is surprising, too. Until story details are revealed we’ll leave players and builders to speculate on how the game world will end up on the screen. (We’ll also await the inevitable fan-made Minecraft movie trailers created within Minecraft.)

CFPB To Credit Card Companies: Put Free Credit Scores On Monthly Statements

by Ashlee Kieler

Is a free credit score coming to a credit card statement near you? It is if major companies listen to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s call to ensure all Americans have free and easily accessible access to their credit scores.

The CFPB is urging the nation’s top credit card companies to make credit scores and related content freely available to consumers, while reminding them not to avoid investigating customer disputes, the Bureau announced Thursday.

Credit scores are used by bankers, lenders, and others to determine a consumers’ creditworthiness and the rates they will pay for services. Typically, consumers have to pay for credit scores or sign up for trial offers that may have hidden costs.

A regularly available credit score may prompt consumers to review their credit standing and pull their free annual report, CFPB director Richard Cordray says in the letter [PDF] to credit card companies.

Fewer than one in five Americans actually use the once-a-year free credit report they are entitled to from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, CFPB says. Without the regular review of credit reports consumers run the risk of not noticing errors in the data or identity theft. In fact, a Federal Trade Commission study last year found that 26% of consumers had errors on their credit reports.

“Consumers often learn the importance of their credit standing when it is too late: after a credit application is denied or identity theft has occurred,” Cordray says. “Sometimes they fail to see the importance of their credit standing even if it has affected them in material ways, such as being rejected for a job or charged a higher price for a loan.”

CFPB’s decision to push for free credit scores was applauded by consumer advocates, including our co-workers at Consumers Union.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to pay to find out their credit score,” Pamela Banks, senior policy counsel for Consumers Union said in a news release. “They deserve free access to the same scores lenders use to evaluate how much they pay for credit.  Director Cordray and the CFPB got it right by focusing on free scores that are reliable and relevant to your finances.”

The CFPB’s call for easy credit score access comes just weeks after Discover announced it would begin providing customers’ FICO scores on monthly statements. At the time, a representative for FICO said the organization was in negotiations with other larger credit-card issuers.

Free monthly credit scores could lessen the number of credit reporting complaints the Bureau receives from consumers.

The CFPB handled roughly 31,000 complaints from consumers frustrated with credit reporting companies between Oct. 22, 2012 and Feb. 1, 2014.

The top three consumer complaints include: incorrect information on a credit report, frustration with a credit reporting company’s investigation and difficulty obtaining a credit report or score.

On Thursday, the Bureau published a supervisory bulletin [PDF] warning companies that provide information to credit reporting agencies not to avoid investigating consumer disputes.

The CFPB has observed that data furnishers sometimes respond to a dispute by simply deleting the disputed accounts and not notifying the credit reporting company. This practice can lead to an incorrect credit report.

Cordray said the agency would continue to work to ensure that credit report disputes are fully investigated, errors fixed, and consumers treated fairly.

LOL: Bootleg ‘Oldboy’ Remake DVD Features Biting Pullquote

by Russ Fischer

oldboy-dvd-header

Look around the internet and you’ll see loads of hilarious bootleg DVD covers. They might mis-identify the stars or filmmakers, provide a terrible plot synopsis, use nonsensical review pull quotes, or feature visual elements which are completely unrelated to the film.

Still, this bootleg copy of Spike Lee‘s Oldboy may now be the king of great/awful bootleg cover design, as it uses a review pullquote that is honest, if not exactly a great piece of salesmanship.

Of course, with shots such as this there’s always the question of authenticity, and we haven’t been able to verify that this is truly an object that can be found in the wild. Regardless, it can be enjoyed on its own merit.

Before & After: Morton Salt Branding

by Andrew Gibbs

Addison and Pause for Thought refresh one of America's most well loved brands: Morton Salt. Addison developed the masterbrand positioning and 100 anniversary branding. Pause for Thought designed the new logo and soon to launch packaging.

The company is launching a year-long campaign in honor of the Morton Salt Girl, who marks her 100th year as the face of the brand in 2014. Morton Salt is also refreshing its brand this year by updating its logo and introducing a new packaging design system.

The Morton Salt Girl has been a staple in hearts and homes all across America for 100 years, and she’s still the one that people trust to be part of their life experiences. That’s because she is more than just a symbol of our brand. She’s an American way of life.

- Christian Herrmann, Chief Executive Officer of Morton Salt

The Birth of an Icon

It was 1914 when the little girl with the umbrella was introduced on the familiar blue round package of Morton Salt and in a print ad in the October issue of Good Housekeeping. The Morton Salt Girl and “When It Rains It Pours®” slogan were created over a century ago for the company’s national advertising campaign to help illustrate that Morton Salt could flow freely even in damp weather, a major product innovation at the time.

Since then, she has grown to serve as a trust mark on a full range of Morton Salt products for consumer and industrial uses. And she still remains a source of inspiration. Even after 100 years, her appeal has stood the test of time as she continues to be brought to life by children and adults in parades, at costume parties, in school art and science projects and in social media.

“The Morton Salt Girl has been a staple in hearts and homes all across America for 100 years,” Herrmann said. “And she’s still the one that people trust to be part of their life experiences. That’s because she is more than just a symbol of our brand. She’s an American way of life.

From Birthday to Brand Refresh

Like its iconic Girl, Morton Salt has been a symbol of Americana. After 165 years, it is one of the country’s oldest and most well-known brands still today. But even iconic brands need an update.

“Morton Salt has evolved as a business and a brand since introducing that familiar blue package of table salt over a century ago,” Herrmann said. “Today, we’re enhancing everyday experiences in more ways and places than ever before through a full range of culinary salts, ice melters, water softening products, Epsom salt and even salts for business and industry.”

He added: “To help signal the company’s continued growth, this milestone year was the perfect opportunity to refresh the Morton Salt brand with an updated logo and packaging design system.”

Logo

• The Morton Salt logo is widely recognized for its bold “Morton Salt” word mark. The new logo now features a fresh and friendly font, while maintaining the leadership qualities of the original word mark, specifically the bold, all-caps type style. The letter “R” in the new “Morton” word mark also carries a slight kick to mimic the Morton Salt Girl’s step.

• In addition to the word mark, the company updated its Morton Salt Girl icon as part of its brand refresh – but in small, subtle ways. The new Morton Salt Girl has cleaner, simplified linework to fit better with the new “Morton Salt” word mark.

“We constantly listen to consumers to ensure that we continue to meet their changing needs,” Herrmann said. “Through our latest market research, we know that the Morton Salt Girl is synonymous with the brand and her timeless, classic look still resonates with consumers today. However, we also knew there was an opportunity to make the brand look and feel more modern and approachable.”

Packaging Design

Along with the new logo, Morton Salt is also rolling out a new package design system for its consumer products, starting in the first quarter of 2014. The new design system preserves the iconic elements of the Morton brand, while using contemporary fonts and simpler communication hierarchies.

The new design system will be applied to all Morton consumer products. For Morton’s iconic Iodized and Plain culinary salt products, in 2014 only, the company is featuring the new Morton logo with a birthday graphic treatment in honor of the Morton Salt Girl’s 100th Birthday. This limited edition packaging will be sold in retail and grocery stores nationwide.

Morton Salt is also marking this milestone year with the first of many new product innovations to come. In 2014, the company is launching two products: Morton® Garlic Sea Salt, an industry first; and Morton® Sea Salt, Roasted Garlic Sea Salt and Black Peppercorn Grinders in stylish, table-top ready glass bottles. These products will be available nationally in 2014.

Morton Salt Girl History

MortonSalt_1914.jpg

Ever since the introduction of anti-caking salt in 1911, the Morton Salt Company had been trying to develop a concept that properly illustrated this innovative feature.  To solve this problem, Morton hired advertising agency N.W. Ayer and Company to develop a marketing campaign that would promote the anti-caking properties of their salt.  The result of which would become one of the most iconic and enduring brand figures of all time.

While several plans were proposed, an originally disregarded alternative concept was noticed by Sterling Morton, the son of founder Joy Morton.  This idea was that of a young umbrella-toting 8 year old, who was accidentally pouring salt while walking in the rain.

While this concept demonstrated the value and innovation of Morton’s anti-caking salt, it also added a symbol of innocence and purity.  The Morton Salt Company adapted a new slogan, “When it rains, it pours.” inspired by a well-known proverb of the time.

The ad debuted in a series of ads for Good Housekeeping in 1914, and the Morton Salt Girl was introduced to the world.

MortonSalt_1921.jpg

To correspond with the fashion of the day, the Morton Salt Girl received an updated look after her debut seven years prior.  Her curly hair was straightened and darkened, and she was given a wide and friendly smile.  1921 also marks the first appearance of the upturned foot, a component that has lasted ever since.

MortonSalt_1933.jpg

1933 saw the Morton Salt Girl’s curls return that some say was a result in the rise of child star Shirley Temple, who donned a similar style to her hair.  Thus, the 1933 version of the Morton Salt Girl is referred to by many as the “Shirley Temple Version”.

MortonSalt_1941.jpg

In 1941, the Morton Salt Girl got her first dash of color.  The yellow dress that she was given is now as synonymous with her as the salt and umbrella she is carrying.  Additionally, design updates to her hair added golden blonde braided pigtails and removed the prominent bow from previous versions.

MortonSalt_1956.jpg

15 years after the first addition of color, even more yellow was added when the Morton Salt Girl began to carry a yellow umbrella.  Her overall appearance was simplified and brightened in order to create a more inviting tone that corresponded with changes to the Morton Salt round can, including the addition of yellow to the top and bottom of the package.

MortonSalt_1968.jpg

1968 gave the Morton Salt Girl her some of the most significant changes to design since her inception in 1914.  In March of that year, “America’s favorite 8 year old” was reintroduced to the world with short, windblown hair and a high-waisted, short yellow dress.  She also for the first time was looking away on the label.

This version of the Morton Salt Girl is the most familiar to consumers today, as she has been a staple of households everywhere since.

MortonSalt_2014.jpg

While 2014 is a year to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the Morton Salt Girl, it is also a year for slight updates and modifications to her look.

The Morton Salt logo is widely recognized for its bold “Morton Salt” word mark. The new logo now features a fresh and friendly font, while maintaining the leadership qualities of the original word mark, specifically the bold, all-caps type style. The letter “R” in the new “Morton” word mark also carries a slight kick to mimic the Morton Salt Girl’s step.

In addition to the word mark, the Morton Salt Girl was updated in small, subtle ways. The new Morton Salt Girl has cleaner, simplified linework to fit better with the new “Morton Salt” word mark.
