You can donate to Con or Bust here. To goose the giving, I will gift-match for the first $500 in donations.

Somewhat Less Short Version: So, there’s an obnoxious bigot who is obsessed with me who the other day released a poorly-edited ebook on the subject of “social justice warriors” and how generally horrible they are, and allegedly (as I have not read the work), I am featured in the ebook quite a lot, because, again, the obnoxious bigot who wrote the book is obsessed with me.

So “Theo Pratt” wrote a parody of the ebook, entitled John Scalzi Is Not A Very Popular Author And I Myself Am Quite Popular: How SJWs Always Lie About Our Comparative Popularity Levels. Here’s the writeup on it:

Basically as soon as its existence was made public, people started asking me to do an audio version of it, because that would be meta, wouldn’t it. And (with the permission of “Theo,” aka Alexandra Erin), I said fine — if doing so could have a positive benefit. In this case, raising money for Con or Bust, a charity which works to bring fans of color to science fiction and fantasy conventions (and yes, donations are tax-deductible in the US*).

So, the deal: If Con or Bust raises $2,500 by by 11:59pm (Eastern), Sunday, August 30, I will create the audio version of the John Scalzi Is Not A Very Popular Author And I Myself Am Quite Popular. And because I’d actually like to do it, because I think it would be fun and because I like the charity, I will gift-match for the first $500 in donations. You can donate by going here.

Is this like a Kickstarter? 

No! You’re straight up donating. If we don’t make it to $2.5k, your donation will still go through. So you’ll want to encourage everyone you know to donate so you get the audio. There’s risk! But I suspect we can between us cough up $2.5k in three days, no?

I’ll post it up here. The ebook is fairly short (28 pages) so it’ll be a manageable file size.

By Grabthar’s Hammer! Galaxy Quest, the genius, underrated and ahead of its time scifi comedy is being developed into a TV show by Amazon. There’s no word on what direction they’re going with it, but the creative team remains the same.

Det är i dagsläget ingen lätt match att få tag i en OnePlus 2. Såväl privatpersoner som media kan få slita hund för att få fatt i en av de ack så eftertraktade tidiga inbjudningarna och lägga vantarna på en OnePlus 2 ur den allra första batchen.

Swedroid hade turen att genom en direktkontakt på OnePlus få en tidig inbjudan, och sagt och gjort så lade vi en beställning. Sent igår damp telefonen äntligen ned i vår brevlåda, och här följer en kortare genomgång av våra allra första intryck, samt en hoper bilder på kartongen och dess innehåll.

Kartongen är till det yttre skrikigt röd och inslagen i vacuumförpackad plast, och ger kanske inte direkt ett exklusivt första intryck. Konstruktionen är dock robust och då vi lyfter på locket möts vi av telefonen, inslagen i skyddsplast.

Nedan telefonen finner vi dokumentation, i form av en snabbstartguide och enklare bruksanvisningar inuti en illröd liten förpackning, och under denna en illröd USB-kabel med vita kontakter samt en vit laddare med röda inslag snyggt förpackade.

Vår enhet är inköpt i USA och levereras således med en laddare med amerikansk stickpropp. Laddaren är på 5V 2A och levererar således en rätt bra knuff, men är inte av snabbladdningstyp av det enkla skälet att OnePlus 2 inte har stöd för snabbladdning.

USB-kabeln har lite udda kontakter: i ena änden, som ansluts till telefonen, är det en USB Typ C-kontakt – en ny USB-standard som likt Apples Lightning-kontakt är vändbar, och i andra änden en i grunden vanlig USB Typ A-hane, som av OnePlus har modifierats så att den kan vändas åt endera håll då kontakten ansluts till en USB Typ A-hona.

Detta är allt som finns i kartongen. OnePlus hakar på trenden att inte skicka med något headset i kartongen, något som sannolikt inte stör speciellt många då de allra flesta redan har flera uppsättningar headsets liggande hemma.

Telefonen i sig är till det yttre välbyggd och det svarta grovtexturerade standardbakstycket känns nästan som ett grovt sandpapper av gummi. Det erbjuder ett grepp som vi nog aldrig har stött på förut, och gör i kombination med det lätt svängda bakstycket att OnePlus 2 ligger väldigt bra i handen. Åsikterna gå isär huruvida det här bakstycket är snyggt eller inte, men att det känns bra i handen håller alla vi frågar med om.

Metallramen är ny för i år och bidrar till att OnePlus 2 är mycket vridstyv och gedigen. Vi kan inte framkalla minsta flex i telefonens chassi ens vid hårdhänt bändande. Knapparna; ström-, volym- och ljudprofilsknappen känns alla kvalitativa och upplevs vara tillverkade av metall.

Knapparna på fronten, tre till antalet nedan skärmen, är alla av kapacitiv typ. Mittenknappen, som ser ut som en taktil knapp men som inte går att ”klicka”, agerar även fingeravtrycksläsare. Vi är inte helt nöjda med de vassa kanterna runtom den försänkta mittenknappen, men då är vi ganska petiga.

OnePlus 2 är en tung pjäs, hela 175 gram, vilket är en god bit högre än LG G4 som har samma skärmstorlkek och ett nästan lika stort batteri. Vikten upplevs aldrig som ett problem, dock, utan bidrar snarare till det gedigna helhetsintrycket.

Skärmen är initialt lite av en besvikelse, sannolikt för att vi gick direkt från två telefoner med AMOLED-skärm (Samsung Galaxy S6 samt Nexus 6) och OnePlus 2 är i en direkt jämförelse med dessa tämligen urvattnad och blek. I takt med att vi använder telefonen och vi vänjer oss vid den LCD-typiska blekheten så börjar vi så smått uppskatta skärmen för vad den är istället för att jämföra den med världens just nu bästa skärm, i Samsung Galaxy S6.

Pekskärmen har inte riktigt den glatta känslan som nya telefoner brukar förmedla, vilket sannolikt förklaras av det fabriksmonterade skärmskyddet. Eller är det ett splitterskydd? I vilket fall går känslan och känsligheten aningen förlorad och skärmen missar ibland ett pek eller svep.

Vi har under våra första timme med telefonen olyckligtvis redan hunnit stöta på några mindre mjukvaruproblem, buggar, men dessa har lyckligtvis varit av den mildare arten. Vid konfigurationsguiden av telefonen hängde den sig om och om igen på ”Checking connection…”, oavsett om vi anslöt via WiFi eller mobilt, och i ett par appar har skärmrotationen slutat fungera trots att det är aktiverat i inställningarna. Därtill har kameran bitvis varit till förbannelse långsam att ta bilder, främst i dunkla inomhusmiljöer.

Med Android 5.1.1 under skalet och Snapdragon 810 att knuffa runt gränssnittet hade vi förväntat oss en silkeslen upplevelse inne i Android. Dessvärre är det inte riktigt så bra som vi hade hoppats och vi upplever en del mikrolagg då vi skrollar runt i exempelvis GMail och Google Play Store, lagg som inte förekommer i samma utsträckning på vare sig Nexus 6 med 5.1.1 eller Samsung Galaxy S6 med 5.1.

Vi har inte märkt av några större problem med värmeutvecking från den numera mytomspunna äggstekaren Snapdragon 810, inte ens under tung belastning där vi använde videokameran samtidigt som vi installerade ett 40-tal appar. OnePlus har sänkt klockfrekvensen en aning för de fyra huduvprocessorerna och tycks ha kommit till rätta med eventuella värmeproblem som 810 dras med.

Vårt första intryck efter blott någon dag med OnePlus 2 är trots en del mindre problem positivt, inte minst den rent fysiska upplevelsen, och vi ser fram emot att få grotta ner oss rejält i OnePlus 2 i vår just nu pågående recension.

I januari meddelade Google att företagets satsning på modulära mobiler, Project Ara, kommer att lanseras i Puerto Rico i år som ett inledande test. Teamet bakom Project Ara har nu ställt in testet och första telefonen släpps inte förrän någon gång under 2016.

Google kommer försöka utvärdera Project Ara på utvalda platser i USA. Huruvida testet i Puerto Rico ställts in helt och hållet framgår inte. Idén bakom Project Ara är dels att smartphones ska bli billigare och dels att de ska gå att uppgradera och reparera själv. Funktionaliteten kan dessutom anpassas efter behov, då de olika komponenterna är enkla att ta bort och sätta dit.
