Please watch and listen this beautiful speech. It made me laugh and cry.
Thanks @neil-gaiman .

It’s not news that companies mine and sell your data, but the ins and outs of how it works aren’t always clear. The Federal Trade Commission recently published a report that explains how it works in a little more detail.

Earlier this week, Peter Capaldi confirmed that he would be departing Doctor Who at the end of 2017—and instantaneously, media outlets across the world began pondering just who will step in the TARDIS next. But if you’re excited to hear about a Post-Moffat, Post-Capaldi Who right now... you’re gonna have to wait.
Amidst the frenzied speculation and bookmakers odds flinging around the internet this week, the Radio Times reports what while Capaldi’s decision to leave Doctor Who has been known for a while inside the BBC, the process of finding his successor has yet to begin—and won’t be beginning for at least several more months. This is mainly because the search for the thirteenth Doctor will only get away when incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall is ready to begin laying out the plans for his first season on the show, which is currently expected to air in Autumn 2018.
That process won’t begin at least until the middle of this year, according to the Radio Times, as Chibnall is still hard at work putting the finishing touches on the third and final season of his popular crime drama Broadchurch. Chibnall told Radio Times he expects to take a short break after finishing Broadchurch before he starts preparing Doctor Who’s eleventh season—partially because of the hectic nature of moving from managing one big show to another, but also to give Capaldi and Moffat the chance to finish production of their final season of Who without the specter of their replacements hanging over them.
So while there’s the closest thing to a hard date on when we’ll see the next Doctor in action—they’ll be a part of Capaldi’s regeneration scene in the 2017 Christmas special, presumably—it’s going to be a good few months before we hear anything official about who’ll be playing the new Doctor, and then an even longer wait for season 11. Although I guess Doctor Who fans are getting pretty good at waiting for things at this point.
It’s finally here! Tabletop is back on YouTube, where anyone can watch it how and when they want! Yay!
We return with Monarch, a delightful game that I just loved playing, with three amazing humans who I am so lucky to call my friends.
A personal note to my friend Ashley Clements: I’m sorry they picked such an unflattering photo for the thumbnail. I’m throwing up my hands at this point.

At the beginning of January, I happened upon a video you may have seen: a young woman doing pushups for 100 days. She starts out “scrawny,” but gets stronger. I wanted to do that. So I did, and you can too.

I like to keep an open line of communication with my cast. I want them to know that they can come to me with any issues they have, creative or otherwise. I’m always here for them, willing to lend a sympathetic ear and, in some cases, equally sympathetic keyboard should the need ever arise for a little dialogue tweak or character adjustment.
Of course, I assume this is a two-way street, and nowhere is this more evident than in my professional relationship with actress Zoie Palmer (the Android). I probably exchange more texts with Zoie than I do anyone, including my girlfriend, which is great because – as I said – it’s important to keep those lines of communications open whether it be to discuss a line change, a scene request, or that really weird dream I had the other night where Zoie jumped into a frozen lake…
Pretty amazing insight into the magic of the creative process, amiright?
Ah, showbiz!

If you ever have to step up and manage people, it can be pretty difficult to figure out the best way to do it in a way that both works with your personality and gets the job done. This flowchart can help you figure out—in broad categories, of course—what type of leader you might be.

Not sure if you’ve been paying attention, but the world isn’t looking so great right now. People are scared. There’s no easy way to make yourself feel better in these trying times, but here’s something good—zoos around the globe are having a #CuteAnimalTweetOff.
The tweet-off began after the National Zoo released a picture of its adorable new seal. After a Virginia woman challenged her state’s aquarium to get in on the cuteness, the viral moment we all desperately needed was born.
So take a breather from checking your breaking news notifications, and instead, gaze lovingly at these good, innocent creatures.
Feel better now? No?
How about now?
With such fierce competition, it’s hard to declare a winner, but I’m pretty sure it’s all of us.
The Bookseller recently posted that E. L. James is in talks with theatre producers to make a Fifty Shades of Grey musical. Making a musical is no small feat, so I came up with some potential song titles in order to give them inspiration. Note that some song titles didn’t even need to be changed from their appearance in already well-established shows. Also, in case you are a newcomer to musical theatre you should know that any song with the word “dance” in the title is really about having sex. Seriously. Just replace “dance” with any word for having sex and tada, you get straight to the subtext. The genius Mr. Stephen Sondheim refers to this in his wonderful song, Can That Boy Foxtrot. Enjoy!

Witchblade is coming to TV... again. Image’s supernatural comic series has a new show planned for NBC from the team behind Vampire Diaries, and someone out there is hoping the golden age of comic book TV can mean that the second (technically, third) time’s a charm for detective Sara Pezzini.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the show, being produced by Sony Pictures Television for NBC, will be written by Caroline Dries, who will executive produce the show alongside her fellow Vampire Diaries producer and writer, Brian Young, as well as Sony TV’s Carol Mendelsohn and the co-creator of the original comic series at Image’s Top Cow Productions imprint, Marc Silvestri.
Like the initial incarnation of the comic, the show will follow cop Sara Pezzini (although transposed to San Francisco’s Mission District, rather than the New York City setting of the original) as she comes into contact with the mysterious Witchblade amulet, a sentient bracelet passed down through female hosts with tremendous supernatural power... which she then proceeds to use to help her solve crime. So it’ll be a procedural with supernatural elements, basically.
It’s not the first time the series has been adapted beyond its comic book origins—there’s of course, the aforementioned TNT series that ran for two seasons, and a failed attempt at a live action movie in 2008. This time, presumably NBC is hoping this new take on Witchblade will stick around for a little longer.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome aboard the most metal flight of your lives. Let’s do some sky crimes.
Finnair flight AY666 has, according to the Daily Mail, become something of a running joke for several reasons. Along with pentagrams and images of Baphomet, 666 is, of course, associated with Satanism. And several times a year, AY666 just happens to fly on Friday the 13th.
Today’s extra-unlucky flight also happened to be nonstop from Copenhagen to Helsinki. Or as ticket-holders would have seen it written: CPH->HEL.
Just to drive the point home, the plane itself is also reportedly 13 years old as of this year. However, it is unknown at this time which of the passengers were seated in the 13th row, or if any of them were 13 years old.
At 3:50 local time today, flight AY666 landed more or less on schedule and without incident. Thanks, Satan.
Back in October, I informed actress Zoie Palmer that the time had finally come. This season, we were going to give her character, the Android, a name. And a backstory. But, more importantly, a name. And so, the two of us got to work, pitching each other possible monikers via text over the course of three months.
I’d be lying in bed, just about to doze off when – PING! I’d check my phone: “Iris”.
Zoie would be sitting in trailer, getting her hair done when – PING! I’d offered “Alice”.
I’d be sitting in a visual effects meeting – PING! “Blake”.
She’d be doing some weekend shopping – PING! “Sydney”.
Me in the shower, shampooing – PING! “Jules”.
Her on set, rehearsing a scene – PING! “Marie”.
“Cleo”
“Clara”
“Zee”
“Destiny”
“Cal”
“Aloysia”
“Dee”
“Loyloy”
Finally, last night, we narrowed it down to our Top 10 and, over the next half hour, narrowed our choices down through process of elimination.
PING! She nixed “Lexie”.
PING! I axed “Tosh”.
She rejected “Amelia”.
I dumped “Elle”.
“Sam” was the next to go followed by –
“Cass”
“Reese”
Then “Kai” until –
Only two remained! Zoie deliberated and, in the end, decided on…
Eliminating “Evie”. Which left her with…
…
…
…
The Android’s name I’ll be dropping into Episode 10.
Yay Team Zolozzi! Is there anything we can’t accomplish?!

A few times a week, I am asked by couples to recommend some two player Tabletop games for them to play. This is a very short, totally non-exhaustive list of (mostly lighter) games that I love to play with Anne, as well as some other games that aren’t her jam, but are still pretty great.
The idea is to take pieces that are basically Tetris shaped, and lay them down on a board, following some simple placement rules. The objective is to use up all of your pieces, or have fewer pieces left than anyone else when you run out of places to put them. It’s super simple to teach and learn, and way more difficult to master than you would expect. There’s a regular Blokus that’s for up to four players, and a version that uses triangles. This travel version is perfect for, well, traveling, and also is specifically designed for two players.
Jaipur is a very simple set collecting card game for two players. It’s portable, and has great replay value because it allows a lot of different strategies to be explored and utilized.
You may have seen us play Small World on Tabletop in the first season. It’s sort of like Risk, but more fun. It’s an area control game, and each player has a fantasy race + special ability combo that changes every game, or multiple times during the game, if they choose. One of the great things about Small World is that it comes with multiple maps in the box, and each map is designed for a different number of players, including a two-player map.
Pretty much any cooperative game will work for two players, or even as a solo game, but I think Pandemic is the best one for couples because it’s so freaking intense. You feel like you’re losing from the first turn, and that’s half the fun of the game. I’m not saying that it lends itself to strip variants, but I’m not not saying that. I should also mention that Pandemic Legacy is fantastic for two players, especially if you want to have the experience of watching a season of a TV show together, only you’re playing it and everyone on Earth is going to die if you fail.
Yes, Sorry! from Milton Bradley. This is the go-to game for Anne and me, because I hate Scrabble. This game is almost entirely random, but there is some strategy if you really want to go that route. It’s great for two players, especially if you want to have a drink or eleven while you play.
Ticket To Ride is a great infection vector for making new gamers, and this expansion is specifically designed for 2 or 3 players. You can technically play any of the TTR games with 2 players, but you run into the problems a large map presents, which (in my opinion) just make the game longer and less fun. So this particular map works well for 2 players, and works with either the original Ticket To Ride or Europe base sets.
Both are little card games that feature pattern matching and team work. Iota is more competitive, and plays like Set in reverse.
One of my favorite Tabletop games of all time, Takenoko is high variance when you play it with 4 players, but intensely strategic when you play it heads up.
Finally, there is also Magic: The Gathering (duh) and my friend Chris Kluwe’s upcoming Twilight of the Gods LCG. If you want something that’s intense and takes hours and hours to play, Twilight Struggle gets high marks from my friends who play it.
I’m sure there are a lot of other games (tell me in a comment, if you want) that work well for two players, but this is what I can come up with quickly off the top of my head, and I have 23 pages of dialog to prepare for a voice session tomorrow so I kinda have to get back to work.
Play more (two-player) games!!
Edit to add: HIVE! This was mentioned in comments (with a lot of other games that look really fun, but haven’t been played by me) and I need to add it. Hive is amazing. It’s everything you love about Chess and Othello and Go, with none of the things that make those games so difficult for new players. Rich Sommer introduced me to this game one night at a little coffee and pie place in North Hollywood, and what we thought would be a quick cup of coffee turned into like four hours of us playing Hive over and over and over. It’s really awesome. Get the pocket edition, because it’s portable and you lose nothing in the translation.
It’s a dangerous road to travel down, comparing yourself to others. It might just be the biggest no-no in polyamory.
Many of us know we shouldn’t be playing the “better this way, better that way” game with our metamours. Wondering how we stack up against the “competition” (and indeed competition and zero sum thinking can be really bad for us). » Read more

On a recent visit to Paris, I found it so strange that their eggs sat next to dried goods, at room temperature, since I’m used to refrigerating eggs in the U.S. We’re all concerned about the potential of Salmonella to make people sick, but the U.S. and Europe just protect against this threat in different ways.

On Sunday, Showtime released a new teaser trailer for the revival of ‘90s art kid favorite Twin Peaks. In it, creator David Lynch can be seen eating a (glazed?) donut as FBI administrator Gordon Cole and, well, that’s about it.
That’s the whole thing.
Those hoping for a bigger peak at the upcoming season might be a bit disappointed, but the promotional campaign has followed a kind of Lynchian logic. Much like the original series, Showtime’s spots have left viewers with more questions than answers so far.
Where did Cole get the donut? Was it any good? Is Cole’s entire donut-eating session, in fact, a dream? To find out, we’ll just have to wait—and argue about it in endless message board threads until then.
