Reader Question: Is Dole Whip Vegan and Gluten Free?

by AJ
Kristen

This is amazing news.

For guests visiting Walt Disney World or Disneyland with a special diet, the popular Dole Whip treat is now just about the perfect snack! Dole Whip’s fruit flavors are now vegan! And Dole Whip has always been gluten free.

Dole Whip fruit flavors are now vegan!

At least, they are according to the official Dole Whip Mix website – Unified Enterprises Corporation. You can now enjoy any fruit flavor of Dole Whip on your vegan and/or gluten free diet!

Taken From Website of Unified Enterprises Corp

At Disney, you’ll find pineapple and orange soft serve Dole Whips! There’s also an option for a Dole Whip Float, which adds pineapple juice to the mix. (The vanilla and chocolate flavors are not considered vegan at this time.)

Disneyland Dole Whip Float

Dole Whip Nutritional Information

  • Vegan (no dairy)
  • Less than 90 calories in each 4 oz. serving
  • Trans Fat free
  • Cholesterol free
  • Gluten free
  • Lactose free
  • Kosher-dairy

In Orlando, look for Dole Whips in the Magic Kingdom at Aloha Isle and at Captain Cook’s in the Polynesian Resort. If you’re on the west coast, Disneyland serves up Dole Whips at the Tiki Juice Bar!

Source: Unified Enterprises. Note that because Unified Enterprises sells its mix to Disney, it can be assumed that Disney’s Dole Whip fits these criteria as well. As always, check with Disney chefs and managers during your vacation to make sure all items are safe for your consumption based on your particular diet.

What is your favorite flavor of Dole Whip? Do you make your order a float? Let us know in the comments below!

Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2013 Collection

by Joanna
Kristen

CHANEL

Chanel Fall Haute Couture – Set against a futuristic skyline fit for a science fiction flick, Chanel’s fall 2013 haute couture show presented a marriage between classic and future style. Creative director Karl Lagerfeld juxtaposed the fashion house’s iconic tweeds with shiny metallics and crystal embellished separates. For autumn, the Chanel woman dons a low-slung belt with her grid-like and striped patterned dresses. Lagerfeld offered many layers for the haute couture season; showcasing models wearing demure dresses worn over pants or even longer skirts. Thigh high suede boots, a more angular take on the classic porkpie hat and sci-fi inspired metalwork were the key accessories of the season.

Behind the Scenes: Designing a Disney Fireworks Show

click through for a whole video about fireworks

Designing a fireworks show for a Disney Park involves selecting music, playing with color, and choosing individual fireworks as carefully as if you’re choosing actors for a play – all to create one amazing story in the sky.

A Disney Parks Fireworks Show

Many of those “stories” will play out at Disney Parks this week, with Fourth of July fireworks spectaculars happening at both the Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort.

Check out this video, in which Steven Davison, vice president of Parades & Spectaculars, gives us a behind-the-scenes look.

Cronuts, Made at Home

Kristen

I am probably too lazy to make these.

It's always more fun to DIY. Every week, we'll spare you a trip to the grocery store and show you how to make small batches of great foods at home.

Today: Embrace the trend. Hop on that bandwagon. And make cronuts at home. Julie from Dinner with Julie shows us how.

Yes, I made cronuts. I jumped on the bandwagon. Turns out, everyone’s right. I might pay $40 for one of these on the black market.

Not since Krispy Kreme have I seen this level of fried dough fanaticism. In the month since their inception tons of copycats have popped up -- since the name is copyrighted, others are calling theirs “Dossaints” or “CroNots” -- and in New York, lineups are going around the block for the things, which are also being sold on the black market. It’s full-on cronut mania.

Madness, I tell you. But I’m always up for a challenge, and we really need to start warming up for Stampede. So I took out the deep fryer. (Note: you don’t need one. A pot works just as well.)

Puff pastry sounds daunting to make from scratch, but it's really a matter of mixing together a basic yeasted dough, slathering it with butter, and then folding it up like a letter a bunch of times, rolling and chilling between each fold. It isn't as finnicky as you might think, particularly when the end result is a batch of buttery, golden croissoughnuts.

Homemade Cronuts (a.k.a. Croissoughnuts)

Makes 1 dozen

Dough
3/4 cups milk, warmed
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1/3 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (divided)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, at room temperature

Maple Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 to 2 tablespoons milk, cream or water

In a large bowl, stir together the milk and yeast. Stir in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla and mix well. Add a cup of the flour and the salt, then gradually add another 2 1/4 cups of the flour, stirring and then kneading for a few (or several) minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic, and still a little tacky.

Transfer your dough to a baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap; chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, beat the butter and remaining 1/4 cup flour with an electric mixer for a couple minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl, until smooth.

When the dough has chilled, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a rectangle that is about 13 by 18 inches and 1/4-inch thick. Spread the butter evenly over the dough.

Fold it as you would fold a letter, in thirds. (Unlike a letter, the dough ends should line up, so that it’s folded exactly in thirds.) Cover the dough in plastic wrap and put it back into the fridge for 30 minutes.

Pull the dough out and put it back on the countertop, with the open sides to the left and right. Roll it out into another rectangle.

Fold the left third over the middle, then the right third over the middle. (This is referred to as a "turn”. To keep track of each fold -- or turn -- press your finger into the dough at the edge to make two marks -- you can do this each time you roll and fold so that you know how many times you’ve done it.) Chill the dough for another 30 minutes.

Roll, fold, and refrigerate the dough two more times, so that you’ve done it four times total. Cover and refrigerate for at an hour, or overnight.

Then, roll your dough out to 1- to 2-inch thickness, then cut it into rounds, or rings, or scraps.

In a heavy pot (or deep fryer), heat a couple inches of oil to about 350° F, or until it’s hot but not smoking, and a scrap of bread sizzles when you dip it in. Cook the doughnuts in batches, without crowding the pot (this can cool down the oil), flipping as necessary until deep golden. Transfer to a baking sheet lined with a paper towel.

Meanwhile, whisk together the icing sugar, maple syrup, and enough milk, water, or cream to make a drizzling consistency. Drizzle over the croissoughnuts while they’re still warm. Then try not to eat the whole batch.

See the full recipe (and save and print it) here.

Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel by AvroKO

Looking for a cool new home bar? Bombay Sapphire and design firm, AvroKO have teamed up to craft the limited edition Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel.

Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel by AvroKO in home furnishings Category

If you’re a gin lover, you know a thing or two about Bombay Sapphire. However, from the design side, AvroKO is responsible for several high-profile projects including LAVO, Beauty & Essex, Kid Robot, and Saxon & Parole in NYC. The firm uses storytelling as a way to create innovative designs and transformative experiences.

Inspired by the “Lazy Susan” turntable, the new Gin Wheel is handcrafted from exotic walnut. Its base – on which the main body spins on – is a plate made of brushed stainless steel. The Gin Wheel’s design celebrates the classic nature of the Gin & Tonic cocktail (of which it’s meant to celebrate!) while boasting an imaginative and refined aesthetic.

The main body opens to high quality bar tools, glassware, removable cutting boards, coasters and custom made aluminum tongs that double as a locking mechanism. There’s also storage for ice and garnish for your cocktails.

Starting next month you’ll be able to buy one of these from The Future Perfect. Bottoms up!

The Bright Young Diana Mitford Guinness Mosley

by noreply@blogger.com (The Peak of Chic)
Kristen

this is one of my new (to me) favorite blogs.

I recently reread author D. J. Taylor's excellent book on the "Bright Young People", those 1920s-era young, upper-class whippersnappers of London whose antics were heavily chronicled by the British newspapers of the time. Cecil Beaton, Evelyn Waugh, Brian Howard, Nancy Mitford, and their ilk made up this tightly-knit group of revelers who pretty much partied their way through the decade. I have to say that after reading Taylor's book for the second time, I am left with conflicting opinions of this group. On the one hand, I admire the writers that Waugh and Mitford became. On the other hand, I think that as a whole, the Bright Young People were mostly vacuous, self-centered people who seemed incapable of understanding- and filtering into- the world outside of their clique. No matter whether one finds the bright young set obnoxious or dazzling, I believe most would agree that this group makes for interesting reading.

One Bright Young Person who was mentioned numerous times in Taylor's book was Nancy's sister, Diana Mitford, seen above as a young woman. Mitford married Brian Guinness during the 1920s, and they went on to become two of the leading lights of their social set. (Or, to use today's terminology, they were a "power couple" amongst their cohorts.)  As we know, Diana Mitford Guinness scandalized her family by throwing over Guinness for Oswald Mosley, the fascist politician who founded the British Union of Fascists and later, the New Party, which included the infamous Blackshirts.  Diana and Oswald would later marry in Germany at Joseph Goebbels' house (where Hitler was in attendance, no less,) espouse fascism, be interned during World War II, and eventually end up living in France.

Political persuasions aside, Diana and Oswald Mosley did have a pretty home in Orsay known rather grandly as Temple of Glory.  While the interiors seemed to reflect their French locale, the house also had a very British feel to it, cozy thanks to books and bibelots.  According to The Finest Houses in Paris, in which these photos appeared, the house had few rooms, prompting one guest, the Duchess of Windsor, to query, "It's a charming place, but where do you actually live?"  Pale blue, Diana's favorite color, made appearances throughout the house, especially via walls and fabrics.  An enthusiastic entertainer, Diana often invited guests to Sunday lunches, where her Irish butler prepared the meals.  For her table settings, Diana preferred to use her rare Saxon porcelain china, placing it directly on the table sans place mats.  And candied fruit (see below) was frequently served after dinner.

All in all, the Mosley house was very elegant and inviting.  It's too bad the same thing can't be said for their politics.

And Partners Make Seven

Sterling Cooper & Partners Logo, Before and After

Established in 1968, Sterling Cooper & Partners (SC&P) is one of the leading advertising agencies in New York, NY and is the result of a merger between Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (est. 1963) and previous competitor Cutler Gleason and Chaough. SC&P's current list of clients includes Chevrolet, Mohawk Airlines, Manischevitz Wines, and Ocean Spray and Sunkist (which is a conflict of interests). When first merged, the agency attempted to adopt Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Cutler Gleason and Chaough as a name and SCDPPCG as an acronym but soon after settled on the name Sterling Cooper & Partners honoring the original partners, Bertram Cooper and Roger Sterling Sr. (current Roger Sterling's daddy), who had founded the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency in 1923. Yesterday, the agency introduced its new logo through a press release issued for immediate release. No design credit was given.

Sterling Cooper & Partners

Press release.

Sterling Cooper & Partners

Logo detail.

The previous logo worked nicely in that it was four letters neatly arranged in a tight grid of rounded-corner squares but in order to make all the letters fill out the squares the typography has been stretched, making the "S" and "C" particularly aggravating. I will blame it on the nascent technology of phototypesetting that allows far more play with the fonts than ever before. But the agency should know better than letting technology drive their aesthetics. Five years makes a big difference and the SCDP logo — name change notwithstanding — was starting to feel out of date in this drastically changing decade. The new logo drops the seriousness of its predecessor with a custom monogram of the abstracted initials and an ornamental ampersand. The monogram letters are nicely executed with the same proportions and counter-spacing used in the taller letters ("S" and "P") as in the shorter one ("C"). The supporting wordmark comes in a remarkably nice bulbed sans serif that hints back to the original sans serif but clearly points forward. Overall, I don't know if this logo communicates all the ideals expressed by the partners in the press release but it is definitely a major improvement that establishes SC&P as an edgier and more contemporary agency.

Thanks to Chris Rooney for the first tip.

My weekend away in Brisbane

by noreply@blogger.com (Merlesworld)
Kristen

so the cats now have their own area outside? My friend's mom had like 15 cats and they built a small structure disguised as a playhouse for them in the backyard for them to sleep in at night.

Well I'm back from my short break in Queensland.
Wonderful weather much warmer than here but my bed is more comfortable and it's hard to sleep in strange houses.
This is a nest of something, they are mighty small and their are lots or big and nasty I don't know which but I'm not disturbing it for love or money.

This one of the glasshouse mountains, they are plugs from ancient volcanoes from long ago when Australia had a few,
now we have none, that I know of.

The shopkeepers are very considerate in this state, I don't very often see anyone in NSW leave a not to explain why they are closed well not to say they have a cold.

Is the start of winter here but some crazy people still go swimming so the flags still go out but there was a message warning of rips forming so it was dangerous.

Still not to bad wandering around but a bit windy.

Lots of tiny shells everywhere no big ones.

Add caption

Footprints in the sand I wonder whose oh wait they are mine.

As you can see it's pretty windy, this is my daughter, I really like this picture.

This little fellow was so tiny.

Have you ever seen brown paper window curtains well you have now they did the job.

My son and his wife have just moved into a new house in another state so they are not yet finished decorating yet.

Everything is white so you can add your personal touches, this is a huge room in the middle of the house joining the living areas and the sleeping areas together, it has full morning sun and milder afternoon sun, lovely in winter and big doors open up in summer to let the breezes in.

Water tanks are now popular on new houses for toilets and cleaning purposes.

tall fences for privacy.

Side yard for entertaining back yard seem smaller and smaller in new houses.

They need a bigger TV, this one looks tiny in these big rooms.

As you can see the garden is coming along nicely.

The cats have a new home.

With apartments for resting.

Murry prefers the old box for sleeping and Bibby likes the grass.

There is always a spider even in a new house.

And here we have the three pyjaminoes (people in their jim jams)

Now what will we have for breakfast, would you believe toast, bacon and eggs and fresh vegi juice and coffee not bad.

The juice was celery, carrots, apple, orange, ginger, beetroot and passionfruit, it was pretty good.

This is bye for now..........
