WordPress turned 10 and the name certainly doesn’t need an introduction, especially to those who are involved in blogging. WordPress has been one of the greatest tools a writer can have when it comes to online publishing. It has certainly made its name over the whole Internet, and helped bloggers and website owners to achieve their publishing dreams.

Many popular websites rely on WordPress to reach out to their audience. At the time of writing this article, the latest version of WordPress has already reached over 28 million downloads. If you have ever wondered how WordPress got so big so fast, we’re going to take you through that journey right now.

In this post, I will talk about how WordPress turned from a simple tool for publishing thoughts online, to a CMS (Content Management System) as advanced as it is now. We’ll look specifically at how the WordPress Admin UI has changed since WordPress 0.71 until WordPress 3.5 and beyond.

WordPress 0.71

Code name: Gold – Released date: 2003

This was the first version of the popular CMS, and it focused on simplicity. There is no dashboard to welcome you with your site stats or other information. Users can have three status modes for a post: ‘Publish’, ‘Draft’ and ‘Private’ for the first time.

This makes it flexible for you to manage your posts by either saving it for later, or publishing it right away. It didn’t have many features, not like what we have today but back then, it was a gift to writers by Matt Mullenweg.

WordPress 1.0

Code name: Miles – Released date: 2004

Released in 2004, this was the second major release of WordPress, and also the first version to be named after a jazz musician,Miles Davis, as we can see from the WordPress site itself: ‘WordPress core developers share a love of jazz music‘.

This version of WordPress had some improvements to both UI and core features as compared to its previous version. This was the first version to allow users to assign multiple categories to their posts as well as creation of search engine friendly permalinks.

WordPress 1.2

Code name: Mingus – Released date: 2004

This version released in 2004 added a whole lot of features to WordPress and the Admin UI. For the first time, users can see the ‘Plugins’ section in the WordPress Admin UI, which is one of the best features of WordPress if you are the kind who like to expand your site’s capabilities without getting your hands dirty.

Users were now able to create Sub Categories for arranging their posts systematically, and for styling, users can also create thumbnails for their posts in this version of WordPress.

WordPress 1.5

Code name: Strayhorn – Released date: 2005

This was the first version of WordPress to show us the so much popular “WordPress Dashboard”. Logging in takes you to the Dashboard instead of the posts page. It also had a tabbed interface allowing users to switch between tabs to either create a post or a page, which wasn’t available in its predecessors.

WordPress 1.5 kept user requests and complaints in mind, and thus tailored exactly to the needs of the users at that time. This was the first version of WordPress to divide the entire theme structure into separate files such as header.php, footer.php and sidebar.php, and so if you make change to any of these files, it gets reflected throughout the entire site, instantly.

WordPress 2.0

Code name: Duke – Released date: 2005

At last, the admin panel had a change in colours, from shades of black and grey to some shades of blue, giving it a fresh and different look from the previous versions. This version released in 2005 and introduced the advanced TinyMCE editor which we all love to use for formatting our posts.

Users were now able to upload images to enrich their posts. The whole admin panel got a facelift, and the preview of themes via ‘screenshot.png’ was added, along with other brand new features.

AJAX was injected to the roots of the WordPress admin panel, thus making actions much swifter than ever before, so now when you delete a comment or a post tag, it will gently fade away without reloading the page, thus saving time and bandwidth. You can now customize your workspace by dragging and dropping panels on the working area.

WordPress 2.5

Code name: Brecker – Released date: 2008

This version of WordPress was released in the year 2008 and had the most beautiful UI of WordPress till then according to me. It was from this version when the WordPress UI started to look like what it is right now. With the introduction of this version the file uploader was revamped with a new look and a few essential features to go.

For the first time in WordPress history, users were now able to upload multiple images or other post attachments at once and finally get to know how much time the uploads will take with the help of a progress bar.

WordPress 2.7

Code name: Coltrane – Released date: 2008

By this time, WordPress had grown rapidly and reached thousands of bloggers, prepped with great ideas for great sites, all roaring to go. The entire framework of the Admin Panel UI has changed, and a sidebar consisting of links to essential tools needed to manage a WordPress powered site was added to the panel giving quick access to needed tools.

The Admin Panel was divided into different sections such as “Publish”, “Tags”, “Comments” and more which gave rise to the addition of two useful features in this update, “Screen Options” and “QuickPress”.

While “QuickPress” made posting easier and faster right from the Dashboard, “Screen Options” helps in cleaning up your writing space as well as dashboard, and have it the way you want not what is fixed by the developers. Some other features include 1-click plugin install, rearranging sections on dashboard and more.

WordPress 3.2

Code name: Gershwin – Released date: 2011

We move ahead to the year 2011 to a refreshed and modern UI for WordPress with the introduction of version 3.2. The UI has changed a lot, completely redesigned, while at the same time, keeping the CSS light so as to load the panel a whole lot faster.

This version features another a great tool “Full Screen Editor”, which provides a distraction-free writing experience. Also the Admin Bar was given some love too, and with the addition of new features such as 1-click addition of new post, new user, etc, it became a handy tool to manage your WordPress site easily.

WordPress 3.5

Code name: Elvin – Released date: 2012

WordPress 3.5, which is the current available version of WordPress, was made available to public in December, 2012. Though the overall UI seemed unchanged or changed to a very little extent, but I am interested in the “Media Manager”.

The media manager seems wonderful and offers a spectacular way to manage all your media for your blog. This version is made ready for the Apple Retina screen, supporting High-Resolution version of the Admin panel, so no matter which device you are using to access your blog’s backend it will surely look great on every device.

What’s Next?

So, we finally reach the current version of WordPress and the journey ends here… until the release of WordPress 3.6. This is a screenshot of a plugin developed by Matt and his team to change the current WordPress Admin Panel UI to a brand new look.

It is expected that they will adapt this new look as the UI for WordPress 3.6. Though not much details are available for this new release, but everything will be confirmed when the official version is released.

With their sleeves surreptitiously stuffed with chicken blood and pig guts, so-called “psychic surgeons” have been hoaxing the vulnerable (the most vulnerable) for centuries.

Yet every vein of the paranormal has its hero, its standard-bearer… and psychic surgery is no exception. Nestled in its dubious and oft-maligned ranks is the charming, beguiling and relatively well-authenticated instance of Arigó, Brazil’s celebrated “surgeon of the rusty knife.”

Regardless of its veracity or verifiability, it is an incredible story—science and spirituality shaken together into a narrative cocktail worthy of the finest magical realist imagination.

Born José Pedro de Freitas in 1921 on a farm in the Brazilian Highlands, Arigó was an entirely unschooled miner up to the age of thirty. Then, however, his life took an unexpected turn, when he became plagued with terrible depression and headaches and hallucinations. A local spiritualist informed him that the maladies were symptomatic of a spirit’s attempting to work through him: they would persist, he was assured, until he obeyed the entity’s bidding.

How Arigó first succumbed to the will of this sprit (ostensibly a German surgeon called ‘Dr Adolphus Fritz’, who died during WWI) is one of the more colorful episodes of a colorful life. Attending some political convention with fellow miners around 1950, an entranced Arigó reportedly entered a sleeping senator’s hotel room, and carved out a recently diagnosed tumor with his razor.

A little later, he similarly plunged, blade first, into an unwell relative’s vagina, plucking the cancer from her uterus. In both instances, the recipients of such spontaneous and unorthodox treatment apparently experienced no pain or panic whatsoever, nor subsequent infection, and were completely healed—all elements that remained characteristic of this strange surgeon’s practice for years to come. (Arigó never, I should stress, made use of any anaesthetic.)

Arigó went on to treat thousands from every walk of Brazilian life, from peasants to politicians, sometimes up to 300 a day, never accepting payment, diagnosing with instant, unerring accuracy, and occasionally complimenting his free jazz operations with detailed prescriptions this illiterate and unschooled man would churn out in an unusually academic example of automatic writing. While at his work Arigó would speak, fittingly enough, in a thick German accent.

Although he operated in relative harmony with the medical profession—sometimes he would send people away without treatment, telling them a less transcendent physician would suffice—this establishment still persecuted him, in concert with the Catholic church, and Arigó would serve some time in jail for unlicensed practice. He died in 1971, a controversial legend and enigma.

Now cop the following: the American intelligence asset, psychic researcher, and author of The Sacred Mushroom Andrija Puharich’s account of his own time with Arigó—and his own brief but remarkable experience under the latter’s notorious blade. The not-a-little sinister Puharich’s credentials are far from impeccable (he was, after all, patron of that “spoon-bending” charlatan and spy Uri Geller), but his tale is still a powerful one…
 

 
Finally, watch some of Puharich’s bizarre footage for yourself, and see Arigó gouging out cysts, fishing out tumors and whipping out cataracts as if it ain’t no thing, while his unflinching patients sit there cool as cucumbers. You even see him rooting around in a guy’s skull.

While I would hardly describe the following as “safe for work” (puss flies, blood oozes), your correspondent happens to be an almighty wuss about this kind of thing, with an outright phobia of doctors, surgeries, surgeons, gory flicks et al— yet still managed to find this footage quite bearable. Either because it’s uncanny. Or because it’s bullshit. Take your pick…

One of the highlights of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ current set list as they tour in support of their fine Push the Sky Away album, is the astonishing “Jubilee Street,” one of the best songs Cave and crew have ever done. It brought the fucking house down when I saw them in Los Angeles earlier this year.

But at the All Tomorrow’s Party show in Iceland recently, after some particularly frenzied dancing that would put men half his age to shame, the Black Crow King made a wrong step and fell off the stage. Hard. (This happens around the 8:40 mark. You’ll note what he’s singing as he drops: “I’m flying. Look at me now. I’m flying. Look at me now.” Whoops!)

But have no fear, no mere mortal he, Cave returns to the stage almost immediately and finishes the song with all the aplomb of a demonically possessed Jerry Lee Lewis. Christ, talk about a recovery! Even falling on his ass in public garners Nick Cave more cool points!

Prince on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Friday, March 1.

The new tune, “Screwdriver,” may not be much but the execution is pretty awesome. It’s nice to see Prince in guitar god mode and I do dig that band. Plus, hearing the 34-year-old (can you believe it?) “Bambi” is a gas.

Endure the ads. It’s worth it. It’s been awhile since Prince appeared to be having this much fun. “Move over rover and let Prince take over.”

According to The Richest, earnest punk rocker Ian MacKaye is supposed to be worth $25 million. First of all, there’s no doubt in my mind that this is just a number they pulled out of their asses. I can’t imagine Ian MacKaye boasting about his net worth.

Second, the only purpose I can possibly imagine for publishing this “information” is rage bait, but it’s just not doing it for me. I get that I’m supposed to feel betrayed or something, but I just can’t bring myself to care if Ian MacKaye made a bunch of money from Fugazi or Dischord Records or Apple stock. I mean, is it even liquid? Is it wrapped in a bunch of investments? Are those investments in the music business, or does Ian MacKaye own a bunch of Subway® sandwich shop franchises? Because that would be a much more awesome story.

Now that we've reached the end of February, it's time to round up our favorite snowmen of the season before we bid them goodbye. Oh, we won't miss the cold weather at all, but it's nice to have the photographs of clever snow sculptures – after all, in August when we're sweltering under the sun, we can pull these up and admire them again!  

1. Snow Goon

Well, that's what happens when you live near a nuclear reactor. Redditor IrishmanErrant works at MURR (The University of Missouri Research reactor). He and a friend built this snowman. Or is it snowmen?

2. The Sikhest Snowman

Somewhere in England, this work of art emerged from the snow this winter. The Sikh dress and accessory details are right, but seeing a snowman with arms bared to show off his muscles makes me feel just a little cold.

3. The Snowdog and Model

Snowmen don't really have to be men – or even human! Mychtar the borzoi (also known as the Russian wolfhound) posed with the snow sculpture made in his likeness. This photograph became the family's Christmas card that year.

4. Lego Minifig

This giant minifig snowman was built in Denmark, the home of the Lego Group. Yes, minifigs are normally yellow, but yellow snow tends to turn people off.

5. Dead Hand Snowman

DeviantART member billy-008 and a friend spent five hours building this snow replica of the character Dead Hand from the Zelda game "The Ocarina of Time." Lucky that he got a good photograph, as someone came along shortly afterward and kicked its head off. The nerve of some people!

6. Snowman Workout

Yes, he lifts, but he really should work on those legs. And maybe give up smoking.

7. Phone Booth Snowman

Surprise! There are still public phone booths in some places. And when one rings, you are still bound to answer it. Even if you are a snowman.

8. Snow Skull

Snow as an art medium can be made to express almost anything, until your fingers freeze off trying to finish the project. I love the gold tooth in this snow skull that probably started out as a Christmas tree ornament.

9. Phoenix Snowman

Phoenix, Arizona, got a bit of a snowfall last week. That's a bit unusual, and Charlotte Shaff documented the appearance of an actual made-from-snow Arizona snowman, as small as he is. Notice it isn't even cold enough to wear a coat!

The Cramps perform some toonz and Lux and Ivy discuss photography, cars and gardening in this nifty concert/interview made for Croatian TV in 1998.

I have always argued that if it were not for rock ‘n’ roll many of its practitioners would have gone insane or ended up in jail. In the case of Lux and Ivy, it seems to have been the glue that kept them happily together for 37 years. You can see it and feel it in this clip - a love supreme.
