TPP: Full text of secret treaty revealed

by Rob Beschizza

lockdown

Courtesy of governments around the world, from the White House to New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

With 30 chapters and more than 2000 pages, it'll be a long weekend read.

Quick highlights dug out by first responders on Twitter and Reddit: Copyright is lifetime plus 75 years; Internet service providers must give your name if requested by copyright holders; ISPs must remove material upon receipt of a copyright claim; and you can't sue if the claim was bogus.

The Hill on what comes next:

The release of the text will probably be followed by an “intent to sign” message to Congress from President Obama, meaning there will be 90 days before he can sign the deal, a rule that is part of the trade promotion authority (TPA) or “fast-track” legislation signed into law this summer.

After that, the White House will send implementing language to Capitol Hill, starting the clock for the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means committees to begin their process of moving the TPP through their panels and to their respective floors for a final up-and-down vote.

TSA screeners can't detect weapons and they never could

by Rob Beschizza

tsa

TSA screeners' ability to detect weapons in luggage is "pitiful," according to classified reports on the security administration's ongoing story of failure and fear.

We know about them because lawmakers are tiring of the charade and the complacency that comes with it. Ars Technica reports:

"In looking at the number of times people got through with guns or bombs in these covert testing exercises it really was pathetic. When I say that I mean pitiful," said Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), speaking Tuesday during a House Oversight hearing concerning classified reports from federal watchdogs. "Just thinking about the breaches there, it's horrific," he added.

Auditors from the Inspector General's Office, posing as travelers, discovered enormous loopholes in the TSA's screening process. A leaked classified report this summer found that as much as 95 percent of contraband, like weapons and explosives, got through during clandestine testings. Lynch's comments were in response to the classified report's findings.

What will the future bring? We all love puppies, don't we?

Damn, this was a funny show

HBO's new comedy The Brink won't be getting a second season after all, as the network has decided to cancel the series after having renewed it earlier this year.

"After evaluating our schedule and our programming needs, we unfortunately decided we cannot give The Brink the attention it deserves for a second season," HBO said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). "We are proud of the first season and wish everyone involved in this show the very best."

A Dutch Designer Has Created An Underground Fridge That Does Not Use Electricity

by dmitry

1

Dutch designer Floris Schoonderbeek, has created the Ground Fridge, an underground cool storage solution, for Dutch brand Weltevree.

2

Modern houses are often built without a basement while a lot of people nowadays feel the need for one: they’re focused on healthy food and, for example, grow their own food or buy in bulk at the local organic farmer.

3

The Ground Fridge is a basement as a product. An innovative version of the traditional root cellar, for the new cosmopolitan with its own vegetable garden and a modern self-sufficient existence.

4

The Ground Fridge makes use of the insulating effect of the ground and the cooling effect of the groundwater.

5

The temperature in the fridge remains stable throughout the year between 10 and 12° C: the ideal temperature for the storage of, for example, fruit, vegetables, wine and cheese.

6

The spherical Ground Fridge is buried and covered with the excavated earth. This layer of soil is about one meter thick and insulating so the temperature inside the fridge barely varies. There’s no permit required to place the Ground Fridge, and no soil to be disposed.

7

The Ground Fridge is equipped with wooden shelves for storage.

Watch All 7 Star Wars Theatrical Trailers

by Justin Davis

The first full theatrical trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is here, and let's be honest, it has made us all a little emotional. Even stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley got choked up watching it. And, although the Episode VII trailer doesn't seem to spill many story details at first glance, it actually contains a lot of hidden depth, too.

Star Wars made its debut in 1977 - it has been with us almost 40 years. Movies have changed a lot in the last four decades, but movie trailers have changed a lot in that time, too. Just see how crazy different the original trailer for Star Wars, included below, looks and feels.

Dissecting the Final Force Awakens Trailer

by Lucy O'Brien

In case you actually live on Jakku, you'll know by now that the final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has landed. Let's all refresh our memories:

It's a terrific trailer - dear god, that shot of Han and Leia - with a heck of a lot of meat to chew on. Here are some of the major talking points. As always, this is potentially spoiler-filled and full of speculation.

0:08 - Here's Rey (Daisy Ridley) exploring what we presume is the fallen Star Destroyer that we first saw in the second teaser. She's wearing a Tusken Raider-esque outfit that could be interpreted as a throwback to Leia’s Boushh armor from Return of the Jedi, but whether or not this holds weight beyond a nostalgic throwback remains to be seen.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer – The 8 best bits

by Stephen Lambrechts
Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer – The 8 best bits

The 8 best bits from the new Star Wars Trailer

Star Wars Trailer

As you probably already know, the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer dropped today, and it's everything we could have hoped for ... and then some.

There's a lot going on in the new trailer, which is made up almost entirely of new footage.

Featuring Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, the adorable BB-8 droid, rebel fighters and TIE Fighters and much, much more, the trailer, much like the ones that have preceded it, delivers an incredible amount of heart mixed in with all of its spectacular action.

With that in mind, we've decided to select eight of our favourite bits from the new theatrical trailer – read on to find out if they match up to your favourite moments!

Kylo Ren's mission statement

Kylo Ren

Not only do we get to finally hear Kylo Ren speak, we also get to find out what his ultimate goal is. Simply put, he wants to finish what Darth Vader started. Joke's on him, though – Vader clearly dropped his evil mission at the end of Return of the Jedi. Didn't he see the movie?

Command deck

Kylo Ren's monologue is delivered over two shots – the first has him standing at the command deck of what appears to be a Star Destroyer while the next has him delivering said monologue to Darth Vader's melted helmet (not a euphemism).

X-Wing vs Storm Trooper

X-Wing vs Storm Trooper

Sure, it's not the X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter remake/sequel you've all been waiting for over the years, but would you settle for and X-Wing taking out a Storm Trooper like it's the easiest thing in the world? Not sure what that Storm Trooper was thinking – he didn't stand a chance!

Poe Dameron is threatened

Poe Dameron is threatened

Not entirely sure what's going on here, except that Poe Dameron is clearly upset about something. We see Kylo Ren getting up close and in his face, then Poe lets out a (silent) scream as Kylo gives him the old "talk to the hand" routine. It looks like it's going to be a very emotional scene.

"It's true... All of it."

It's true

"There were stories about what happened," says an inquisitive Rey to the roguish gentleman known as Han Solo. "It's true... All of it," he replies. "The Dark Side, the Jedi... They're real," he says, as shivers roll up the spines of everyone who grew up watching this beloved franchise.

Crossguard Lightsaber in the rain

Cross-Saber in the Rain

There really isn't too much to say about this shot other than it looks unbelievably, awesomely, insanely cool.

Red Robot

Red Robot

It wouldn't be a JJ Abrams production without the appearance of a red robot! Now if only we'd gotten the actual robot from the Bad Robot logo...

Anyways, this shot is very cool, in that it shows Han leading Finn and BB-8 somewhere interesting, but who resides there? It has loads of colourful flags hanging in front of it – could it be Leia's place? Han's? We'll find out soon enough.

Han embraces Leia

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Han Leia

Here we get a good look at Leia's face as she receives a loving embrace from Han. We can see that she's crying, but what is she crying about? Is this the first time she's seen Han in a long while? Did she receive some bad news? Is it regarding Luke? So many questions; so few answers!

Finn vs Kylo Ren

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Finn vs Kylo Ren

This shot of Kylo and Finn approaching each other with lightsabers drawn is awesome and has all the makings of another classic Star Wars battle for the ages. Does Finn, a Jedi beginner, stand a chance against the likes of Kylo Ren? It seems unlikely, but you never know!

Syfy Cancels Defiance

by Matt Fowler

Update: Trion CEO Scott Hartsman, who runs the developer behind the Defiance MMORPG, issued the following comment to IGN regarding the series' cancelation:

We’ve had a great time working closely with the team of stellar writers, designers, producers, and actors on the Defiance TV show.  Like many of you, we’ve all enjoyed the stories they told week in and week out.  Let’s treat this as a fond farewell, in celebration of a successful three year run of a show that broke a lot of new ground and brought an incredible quality experience to its viewers.

As for the game and its future, Defiance is Trion’s IP and the game will continue exactly as before.  The show has always been a fantastic and interesting partner, but the two were always meant to be able to stand on their own, which is why the show was primarily set in St. Louis and the game in the SF Bay Area.
