Chinese Stealth Fighter J-20 Starts Production

by Jeffrey Lin and P.W. Singer
J-20 2101 China Stealth Fighter

2101

"2101" rolled out of the factory on December 26, 2015, still in its bright yellow factory primer. 2101 is structurally most similar to "2016" and "2017", the 7th and 8th J-20 prototypes. With the first LRIP squadron likely to be completed by the end of 2016, Chinese pilots will quickly put the J-20 through the paces to push every bit of capability out of their new stealth fighters.

In a Christmas gift for Chinese fighter pilots, December 25th saw the unveiling of a new J-20 fighter in fresh yellow fuselage primer on the runway of the Chengdu Aviation Corporation (CAC) factory. More notable than its paint color, however, was the numbering of the plane: "2101." As opposed to "2018" or "2019" to follow the eighth flying prototype "2017," "2101" suggests the plane is the first of the low rate initial production (LRIP) airframes, which signify the move away from prototype production to building fighters for actual military use.

LRIP is the stage in the program where CAC will build enough production fighters (about 12-24) for test and evaluation flights by the PLAAF to understand the J-20's capabilities, before further committing to large-scale production. Initial operational capability should come around in the 2018-2019 timeframe, once the Chinese Test Flight Establishment (CTFE) regiment develops the technical proficiency and competence to use the J-20 to the fullest in combat operations.

Up and Away

At the CAC factory in Chengdu, Sichuan, the first production J-20, "2101", is put through taxiing tests on the factory runway. "2101" will soon have a coat of radar-absorbent material (RAM) applied over its yellow primer coated composite airframe to increase its stealthiness against radars.

"2101" is the ninth J-20 fighter built by the CAC in under five years (the first J-20 prototype flew in January 2011). In comparison, the first production F-35A (AF-6) flew in February 2011, five years after the first F-35 prototype flew in February 2006. The F-22 also took about five years to transition from first flight to LRIP (September 1997 and February 2002).

"2101", and other LRIP J-20s are going to be similar to the design of the final prototype, "2017", seen here.

Given over a decade's worth of global technology advances, intensive investment and competent program management, it should come as no surprise that China will be the second nation in the world to start production of stealth fighters. The J-20 will give the PLAAF a technological advantage over every other Asian air force. While the J-20 may not be able to supercruise (fly at supersonic speeds without using fuel-thirsty afterburners) with its current Russian AL-31 turbofan engines, its high level of stealth, long range and electronic warfare capabilities will make it a very formidable foe for other fighters.

The J-20 also carries a powerful active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, nose-mounted infrared search and tracking sensors, and fuselage-mounted cameras to give its pilot a VR 360 degree imaging (similar to the F-35's avionics). For weapons, the J-20 would have long-range missiles like the PL-12, PL-15, and PL-21, and short-ranged infrared-guided PL-8 and PL-10. Networked with other platforms such as the Divine Eagle anti-stealth drone, the J-20's array of sensors will give it the ability to go toe-to-toe with other stealth fighters.

A group of CAC engineers and technicians gather behind 2101, likely to be ironing out any details before its maiden flight in the coming days.

While the J-20 certainly a formidable foe today, in the next several years of development advances, its capabilities can be expected to grow. Future J-20's will likely have super-cruise capable Chinese WS-15 turbofan engines and improved gallium nitride AESA radars, with further out options including pilot controlled UAVs. As J-20 testing wraps up, the PLAAF will also have many other new projects to roll out, like the J-31 stealth fighter, H-20 stealth bomber, Sharp Sword stealth UAV and hypersonic weaponry.

MOTÖRHEAD's Manager: LEMMY's Cancer Prognosis Gave Him Two To Six Months To Live

MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister was given "two to six months to live" when he was told he had terminal cancer on December 26, two days before his death. The band's longtime manager Todd Singerman has revealed to Sky News that Lemmy went to hospital two days after his 70th- birthday party at the Whisky A Go Go club in Hollywood, California on December 13 because he wasn't feeling well. Although his doctors initially said he was fine, they decided to do a brain scan before releasing him because "his speech was seeming a little odd. We wanted to see if maybe [he'd had] a minor stroke." The scan uncovered tumors in Lemmy's brain and neck. Singerman told Sky News on Monday: "Nobody had any idea, we just learned Saturday, two days ago, that he even had cancer, and the doctor told him he had between two to six months to live. He [died] today as I was making calls to [his MOTÖRHEAD bandmates] Phil [Campbell] and Mikkey [Dee], telling them to come on out so they could have a last goodbye while he was still upbeat and everything. He was feeling mighty low... He wasn't expected to die like that." Singerman added: "He [Lemmy] gets home [from tour], we have a big birthday party for him at the Whisky A Go Go. His friends came down and played. Two days later, I could tell he wasn't feeling good, so we took him to the hospital, they release him, then after the brain scan they found the cancer in his brain and his neck... The doctor comes with the result a couple of days later and says... it's terminal." The manager told RollingStone.com that Lemmy reacted calmly. "He took it better than all of us," he said. "His only comment was, 'Oh, only two months, huh?' The doctor goes, 'Yeah, Lem, I don't want to bullshit you. It's bad, and there's nothing anyone can do. I would be lying to you if I told you there was a chance.'" Singerman initially wanted to keep the diagnosis private and announce only that Lemmy was gravely ill and needed to be left alone. "He was like, 'No, no. You go ahead and put out a press release," the manager told RollingStone.com. "I want people to know it was cancer. It's a bad thing and they should know it.' That's how he felt." Despite Lemmy's well-documented health issues over the last two years, Singerman said the cancer diagnosis "caught everyone by surprise. [Cancer] was the last thing we thought he would ever have. When you think about it, he has been to every doctor and hospital around the world and nobody caught that... That comes as a massive shock." Singerman said Lemmy's lifestyle was unlike that of any other rocker. He said: "I've been with him almost 25 years, and it was a half gallon of Jack Daniels a day, two-three packs of cigarettes and his other little favorites and that was a daily thing. "Recently he switched over — and I still can't grasp it but he thought it was healthier — he switched over to vodka and orange." He added: "I still always remember a great quote: Lemmy from MOTÖRHEAD makes Keith Richards from THE [ROLLING] STONES look like a Golden Girl. "This guy lived it every day and there was never a break in between. "He was the last true rock star left, if you ask me."

Confirmed: Reunited GUNS N' ROSES To Play Next Year's COACHELLA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL

According to U.S. music industry magazine Billboard, GUNS N' ROSES has been confirmed as the headliner for next year's Coachella Music And Arts Festival in Indio, California, which is set for April 15 through April 17 and April 22 through April 24. The band is also currently in negotiations to do a 25-date football stadium tour in North America next summer for which they're asking $3 million per show. The most expensive tickets for the shows are slated to sell for between $250 and $275. Billboard reports that founding members Axl Rose and Slash will be featured in the lineup, with bassist Duff McKagan also reported to be involved. There is no word on whether original guitarist Izzy Stradlin or drummer Steven Adler will appear, although that seems unlikely. Consequence Of Sound says that Adler's original replacement, Matt Sorum, is also on board, while other reports have suggested that current drummer Frank Ferrer and guitarist Richard Fortus will round out the lineup. Representatives for the band, as well as Coachella producer Paul Tollett and agent Ken Fermaglich, could not be reached for comment by Billboard. Speculation about a reunion tour has been steady ever since Slash revealed last summer that he and Axl had repaired their friendship after being estranged for nearly 20 years. The last show Axl and Slash played together was on July 17, 1993 at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires. The latest incarnation of GUNS N' ROSES, which only included Axl from the original lineup, played a residency in Las Vegas last year but has remained silent since. Two clues surfaced last week that sent the reunion rumors into overdrive: the GUNS web site disappeared and was replaced by the original lineup's logo, while a mysterious teaser showing footage of a concert crowd with GUNS music playing in the background appeared in front of selected showings of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". The official lineup for Coachella — which has a reputation for hosting reunions by acts like RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and OUTKAST — will be announced on or around January 5.

MOTÖRHEAD's LEMMY Dead At 70

Roumen.ganeff

Not like

MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy died earlier today at the age of 70, it has been confirmed. The surviving members of MOTÖRHEAD said in a statement: "There is no easy way to say this… Our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made its way down the street, with his family. "We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words. "We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please… play MOTÖRHEAD loud, play HAWKWIND loud, play Lemmy's music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself. HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT. "Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister 1945 -2015. Born to lose, lived to win." Ozzy Osbourne said in a statement: "Lost one of my best friends, Lemmy, today. He will be sadly missed. He was a warrior and a legend. I will see you on the other side." Lemmy dealt with some serious health issues recently, forcing the indulgent rock legend to scale back on alcohol and kick his cigarette habit. Though Lemmy had made some positive steps forward, he had been struggling with poor health in recent months, leading to MOTÖRHEAD's touring schedule being disrupted. The rock icon recently claimed that he was doing just fine and was people to stop asking about his health. He told Classic Rock: "I'm sick of the fucking, 'Are you going to die?' line of questioning. It's getting really old, that question. I’m alright. I'm going out there and doing my best. "I have good days and bad days but mostly I've been doing alright. The last tour of the States was very good." Lemmy, who turned 70 years old on December 24, told Classic Rock he had no intention of retiring. He said: "It's when you get to 60 when everything starts to go pear-shaped. Everyone thinks that becoming an older guy is easy, but you never consider it fully. It comes as quite a shock. But the thing is, I don't want to give in to it." Lemmy previously said that he didn't expect to still be here at 30. "I don't do regrets," he said. "Regrets are pointless. It's too late for regrets. You've already done it, haven't you? You've lived your life. No point wishing you could change it. "There are a couple of things I might have done differently, but nothing major; nothing that would have made that much of a difference. "I'm pretty happy with the way things have turned out. I like to think I've brought a lot of joy to a lot of people all over the world. I'm true to myself and I'm straight with people." Asked if his illness has made him more aware of his own mortality, Lemmy said: "Death is an inevitability, isn't it? You become more aware of that when you get to my age. I don't worry about it. I'm ready for it. When I go, I want to go doing what I do best. If I died tomorrow, I couldn't complain. It's been good."

Second Opinion: Jessica Jones review: a second opinion

by Marc Chacksfield
Second Opinion: Jessica Jones review: a second opinion

This is a second opinion review of Marvel's Jessica Jones, which you can view on Netflix right now. You can read our first review here, which was written after one massive binge-viewing session. Warning: some mild spoilers lie ahead.

Jessica Jones isn't a superhero drama, it's post-superhero. It's about a person who tried and gave up on saving the world, the life that is left and the demons that come with it. Jones is no longer a superhero but a private investigator that gets tied into a missing persons case that is directly linked to her own past.

Jessica Jones is a show that wouldn't have happened without Netflix - or at least another service that is free from the shackles of scheduled programming - and it's superb. Like its titular character, it does have some issues but they never detract from the beauty of the show.

Krysten Ritter is perfectly cast as Jones. Taking the brilliance she brought to Breaking Bad, Ritter adds a real authenticity to the character. This is someone who makes mistakes, drinks too much and has pissed off enough people that her friendship group is now just a handful.

It's also a person that is haunted by a past that now forges her present: each decision she makes is a barrier to stop the past coming back - her every move is both defensive and a defence.

Jessica Jones

It's apt then that Jessica Jones' narrative weaves into a bigger tapestry: the Defenders. This ragtag team of Marvel Superheroes is Netflix's big Avengers-like play. Daredevil was the first, brooding series. Jessica Jones walks among the same Hell's Kitchen setting and this is to be followed by shows focusing on Luke Cage and Iron Fist - all culminating in a Defenders series.

A complete Marvel

So far so Marvel, but Jessica Jones is far removed from the sanitised world of Avengers and Agents of SHIELD. Jones is connected to the bigger Marvel universe but it's kept at arm's length, for good reason. Jessica Jones and Daredevil live in a harder, edgier and, frankly, more interesting world than Iron Man and co.

That is not to say the movies aren't knowingly nodded to throughout the series. Sometimes these hints are self-referential - a kid running past the camera in a Captain America costume - while some do nothing to push the plot along but point to the bigger comic-book picture. The battle that ravaged New York in the Avengers, for instance, is referred to as The Incident. Even Stan Lee makes a cameo - keep an eye on the pictures on the wall of the police department.

One way the show and the movies do gel, though, is the genius path the non-Avenger movies have gone down - that of the genre piece. Where Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a conspiracy film, Ant-Man a heist flick, Jessica Jones is a detective show.

Its roots are found in the likes of Philip Marlowe from The Big Sleep. Jones is a jaded, hard-drinking, life-dedicated-to-the-job PI. Hell, even her theme tune sounds like it's piped out from a smoke-filled Jazz-tinged bar. And let's not forget Jones offers up her own cynical voiceover throughout the show.

Jessica Jones

Kilgrave - was Murdercorpse unavailable?

Despite the show being called Jessica Jones, her world comes alive when side characters are introduced. They all have a rich backstory that is ready for mining in the inevitable second season.

There's the lawyer she befriends - a great Carrie-Ann Moss - who is embroiled in a messy love triangle, Luke Cage whose own story is set up within the series and whose past deals a devastating plot blow. And the best friend who is one step away from becoming a superhero herself.

Jones even manages to find a solution to Marvel's villain problem. David Tennant is the big bad here, playing the mind-controlling Kilgrave - someone who has an unhealthy obsession with Jessica Jones. He's the best Marvel villain since Loki and even manages to out-British Thor's brother.

Tennant is completely captivating throughout. He's a monster who's suave and sophisticated, a mind manipulator that's thoroughly charming. But once his story completely unfurls he turns rapacious and repulsive.

It is his character that presents the one issue I have with the show, though. There's only so much that can be done to thwart someone with mind control and the same tricks are repeated throughout the season.

The character remains great but how he is dealt with is stretched out too long, rinse and repeated too many times. It feels like Netflix wanted to stick with its 13 episode series run, when 10 episodes would have been enough to tell the story.

Jessica Jones

This niggle aside, Netflix has done a wonderful job with Jessica Jones. It manages to be a show about people with superpowers, but doesn't need the tropes to make it watchable. Even Jones' powers are used sporadically. We see her break more doors in a huff than lift cars or jump incredibly high.

Silly costumes are hinted at but never used. Kilgrave - known as Purple Man in the comics - doesn't look like his purple-hued comic equivalent but the colour is used throughout, permeating pretty much every scene.

It's a purple that looks superb in 4K - which is another factor that pushes Netflix's Marvel offerings above the movies. Marvel's insistence that all its new shows are shot in 4K highlights that this show, alongside Daredevil, is forward-thinking, intelligent entertainment.

It proves that, when done right, the superhero genre isn't just for kids and grown ups who are still big kids - something the comic-books have succeeded in doing for years. TV has taken a while to catch up but this is one giant Jessica Jones leap in the right direction.

The Scottish Fold – Owl Cat Extraordinaire

by RJ Evans
The Scottish Fold is something of a special breed of cat.  Seeing one for the first time you are drawn to its round facial features and, in the back of your mind, a thought nags you that something seems to be missing. Then you realize – it’s all about the ears.

Not so much missing, mind you – this cat has fine hearing. Yet a dominant gene mutation has caused the ear cartilage to fold. So, instead of the usual pert and upright cat ears what you see is the ears bending forward and down, towards the front of their head.

It can be a surprise – and the shock of the new can to begin with, be confused with dislike. Yet once you get used to this unusual owl-like appearance. The Scottish Fold breed becomes a very attractive cat.

Until 1966 the breed was known as the lop-eared cat, which was after the rabbit of the same name.  Breeders decided it deserved a unique name of its own and so the name Scottish Fold was created, even though it can also be called the Highland Fold, Longhair Fold or even the exotic sounding Coupari.

The breed is not an old one. In 1961 a white barn cat (called Susie) who lived in Coupar Angus in Scotland, was born with folded ears, which gave her the now famous owl-like features. Out of her first litter, two had folded ears just like their mother.  A local farmer William Ross,  bought one of the cats and in 1966 began to breed them.

Out of 76 kittens born in the first three years, 42 had folded ears and 34 had straight ones. With the help of the geneticist Pat Turner, it was deduced that 50% of the kittens born from the union of a folded-ear cat and a straight-eared cat would have the fold.

Although there were concerns for a number of years about genetic difficulties the breed was exported to America and crossed with British and American Shorthairs. Although the build up of wax in their ears may be greater than other breeds the initial concerns have now been allayed.

Yet at least one vet has called for the cessation of the breeding of the folds. Ethical breeders ensure that a fold is only mated with a non-fold to alleviate any potential genetic drawbacks.  However, the resulting kittens of a fold on fold union can have disastrous degenerative bone conditions.

The Scottish Fold has a reputation for being a very loving cat and a great companion – which is quite unusual in the feline word! As such and together with the very distinctive physical trait the Scottish Fold is a highly desirable cat to have around the home and typically do cost a lot more than common breeds.

This Guy Was Really Annoyed By All The Garbage In His Town. So This Is What He Did…

by dmitry

0

Tommy Klein, from the Netherlands, loves to ride his bike. One time, he became disappointed by the state of the river bank in his town. No one seemed to have any intention of clearing up the huge amount of garbage that had piled up there. So he decided to deal with the problem on his own. Every morning he would get up thirty minutes early in order to go fill up one bag of waste. Tommy put up a few photos on Facebook and in turn, 180 people came to his aid.

This is his story.

“Every day I go for a ride on my bike. I like this place — if you don’t count the garbage. The whole of the embankment is covered in waste from people who’ve had picnics there.”

1

“One time I became so tired of looking at it, I decided to deal with the problem myself.”

2

“It took me 30 minutes to fill up one bag of waste.”

3

“But one bag didn’t solve the problem. So I promised myself that I would fill up a bag every day.”

4

“In a week I’d gathered 20 bags, and one part of the river bank was completely transformed.”
